Come a bit closer while I whisper, I must whisper in your ear. Welcome to the Christian Car Guy radio show. I say this calls for action and now nip it in the bud. Nip it in the bud.
You got to nip it in the bud. Whispers of hope today on the Christian Car Guy show. When did you wait on God only to find out he was waiting on you? Whispers of hope. When did you wait on God only to find he was waiting on you?
And so fun today, I've got my good friend Bill Mixon with me. And so interestingly, you may know that it is my practice every Saturday morning to get up very, very early and ask God, you know, what do you want us to do today on the Christian Car Guy show? Because I found out years ago if I work all week on it and then, you know, that he often, you know, calls an audible on me and he called an audible on me this morning because I really did study something else all week. And then I came in this morning, he was like, he literally whispered in my ear. It was like, you hear this whisper from God and he said, whispers of hope. And I was like, what?
And he couldn't have been more clear. He said, whispers of hope. I said, okay, the show is going to be whispers of hope.
And I'm like, where do I go? So, you know, knowing me, you probably know the first thing I did, Bill, was begin to look at these words, right? And the idea of whisper, as you may know, is, you know, if you think of Elijah in the cave, right, you know, in the cleft of the rock, he's trying to hear from God and he goes up there like Moses did. And it was, you know, the whole scene where you had the fire and you had the earthquake and God wasn't in the fire and God wasn't in the earthquake and he was a strong wind, which is interesting to me because the Holy Spirit is often referred to either by wind and fire, but God wasn't in either of those, interestingly, in Elijah's experience there. But instead he got this still, small voice. It's a whisper if you think about it. And when I looked at that word, still, you know, the interesting thing about that is it's very much connected to still waters.
Because there's actually the letter, which means water in Hebrew, is a mem, and there's two of them in that word, still. And so I thought, wow, that's interesting because still waters do run deep, but they're also awful powerful. And then I thought about when Jesus calmed the storm, what did he say?
Be still. Right? And can you imagine how clear his glass that water was? And I'm often, and you often swim, Bill, right?
Yes, above and below. Right. And so you know what I'm talking about when the water just goes like glass and there's this peace and this quietness that's there, that it seems like the perfect time to hear from God, right?
As you're waiting. I've been on top of some violent storms and jumped in the water and there was peace about 15 feet down. Yeah, that too. That too.
You know, as you can get below the waves. So anyway, so I was thinking about that and then I began to study the word hope, which I have a favorite word of hope that I've, it's in the book of Ruth, it's called the kava in Hebrew. And I've always loved, loved, loved that word, but I could see that it wasn't where God was going in this particular case. And as I began to study the word hope, I saw that the root of that word that I felt like God was pointing me to in the idea of hope was also to wait or to tarry. And as I looked at that word, the root of it is the word for life. It's hey in Hebrew, very famous. A lot of people get that tattooed on them or whatever.
It's a pretty significant looking, it's just two letters, a het and a yud that means life. Well, that would mean wait if you just put one last letter on it, which is a lamed. And so with that lamed, it's life learning or loving. So when you put those, you kind of put that together, you think about it, and I was thinking about it, that all of your life you're waiting, you're waiting on, you know, to be able to walk, to be able to talk, you're waiting on your driver's license, you're waiting to get your social security card, you know, whatever it is you're waiting on, you're constantly waiting for that next test if you have cancer. Believe me, if you ever had cancer, you're waiting on this doctor appointment, you're waiting on that. You've got all these things that you're waiting, that while you're waiting, according to this idea of hope, you be loving and you be learning. And so as I, you know, began to think about that and how much I wait on this and I wait on that, and all of a sudden it occurred to me that, man, God, you know, we're all waiting on you to come back. And I thought, you know, we're always waiting, waiting, maybe he's waiting on us, because I remember, like, and this is where we're going, I'm hoping you got a story like this that you can share.
So, you know, maybe you're waiting on a new car and it's that kind of thing, but maybe, just maybe he's waiting on you. Because, like, when I lost weight, what happened was, you know, I was waiting on God, like, waiting, waiting, waiting. Like, I've got to lose weight, God, you got to do something. I got to do something, you know, I want to get healthy and all those things. But it seemed like at the point in time where, you know, he was waiting on me, that as I really dove in and began to do the things I knew I should be doing, you know, the things I should be eating, the exercise I should be doing, then all of a sudden, you know, things began to happen.
And as it turned out, right, waiting was not supposed to be an inactive sport, right, Bill? It was supposed to be a learning, which by the way, I don't know about you, but I bet you're learning your diet every single day, right? Every time you think you made a progress, you find a little nuance or something that can be done just a little bit different to make it just a little bit better. And same thing with your exercise routine, right? You love to hike.
I do. And I bet you find there's certain ways to do things that make it just a little bit better as you learn and you learn and learn. I've got a checklist of the things you take and where you go.
I go from easier hikes to more strenuous hikes each year. And same thing with driving, right? You continue to learn. You know, you're waiting on that stoplight. You're waiting on the traffic.
You're waiting. In other words, there's all kinds of waiting involved in it, but while you're waiting, there's things that you're learning that say, oh, this is a little bit better way to do that and a little bit better way to do that. And so it's really a cool thing when you think about it that part of it is like if you listen carefully in my intro, you heard that the whisper song, which was by Greg Gilpin, pretty famous little whisper song.
I thought it was pretty cool. And then Phil Wickham, this song just came out about 10 months ago. It was called Wait. And when you listen to these lyrics, he says, the longer I wait, the more you can do, and the deeper I fall in love with you. So I wait.
I wait for you. So it's interesting, the longer we wait, the more we learn, especially when you think, when you put into the whole thing in a package. You see, water and the Word and Jesus are all the same thing.
In other words, one is the other is the other. So when you look at the Word of God, it's considered a body of water, right? He is the living water. And so the Word is water, and it quenches your thirst.
It all fits into the picture. And so that idea of still waters, you think about how much you can learn while you wait from the water, okay? Because you're waiting on all these different things. Well, where's the best place to go when you need help waiting is the Word of God.
I mean, it's amazing how those still waters can enter into you. Like yesterday, I had a very desperate call from a friend, very close friend, and I just started to pray. God gave me a few pieces of Scripture, and I watched as she went from almost hysterical to almost complete joy as the Word of God got in there, and it just did what it was supposed to do, right? And so what is your story where you were waiting on God, but as it turned out, he was waiting on you?
866-348-7884, 866-348-7884. At the bottom hour, we've got another very, very short Christian car guy theater. It's only two minutes. The Princess and the Pea. It's the famous fairy tales, the rest of the story. What happened after the princess slept on the pea? I know you always wondered that.
Well, you're going to find out today. At the bottom of the hour with Ann Alt, she'll be calling in with that as well, and so you have that to look forward while you wait, right, on the calls, and I'm waiting on your call. 866-348-7884, 866-344. Truth, we've got so much more Christian car guy show coming up, but the best part will be your call. 866-348-7884.
We'll be right back. Whispers of hope today on the Christian car guy show. When did you wait on God only to find out he was waiting on you? We would love to hear your story. 866-348-7884, 866-344.
Truth. How about you, Bill? Well, the one that jumps into my mind is that I had a drinking problem when I got married, and when our first child was about to be born, I got down on my knees and said, I need help with this. I don't want this problem, and I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and he sent me down to the Samaritan soup kitchen, and I couldn't figure out why. A number of years went by, and one of the guys that was in their treatment program down there in their AA program came up to me and said, you know, we were talking about you last night. You've been coming down here a long time. Would you like to visit our AA meeting? And I said, I don't understand.
I got the book. Why in the world does anybody go to an AA meeting? And he says, well, for me, if I go to a meeting, I'm going to hear four or five stories from people that thought they could have one drink, and they couldn't. And a light bulb went on. It's like I knew immediately that I was down there because I was too proud to go to an AA meeting, and God needed me to go down there every week to be my AA. And in that quiet, still voice that was absolutely impossible to – God said, that's right, and once a month will be fine from now on.
And I went from every week on Tuesday to – I mean, on Thursday to the third Thursday of every month. But for years, I couldn't figure out why. I had absolutely no doubt I was supposed to be there. And it was sort of like I quit hearing his voice, but I was reading the Scriptures and I was – yeah, I kept waiting for that – the clear voice that I'd heard when he took the alcohol out of me.
And to hear it then, it's like I've been waiting for this, but it's been me. It's taken me all these years to understand that I was there for me. I wasn't there for God. I wasn't there for the people there.
But God had me there to be a solver and to keep me from falling away from the right track. Darrell Bock That is fascinating. I've known you many, many, many years, and I've never heard that story. I've heard pieces of that story.
I've never heard that story from that angle. So when you started going to the soup kitchen, you had already stopped drinking? Dr. Gerry Breshears I'd already stopped drinking, and every night I would think about the Samaritan, and every morning I would think about the Samaritan. And I remember having a conversation with God, you know, here's a written list of things that I'd be glad to do for you, but I don't want to be in East Winston after dark. I don't like the idea. There's nobody down there I want to help. There are all kinds of things I'd be glad to do.
But that's just a scary idea to me. And the next day these two little, I mean, little gray-haired ladies came up to me at church, and they said, we're so glad that you started back to church, and we wanted to tell you we volunteer at the Samaritan soup kitchen. And I, you know, you could have knocked me over with a feather. And for some reason back then, I knew where God came at 7 p.m. He came through the basement of the house we were renting, and I didn't really have it in my head that I could have stopped and talked to him right then. But I was really looking forward to having a conversation with him at 7 o'clock that night. And I said, you know, I still don't want to go down there. I don't know where the place is. I got my list.
I'll be glad to talk about my list. And the next day, Monday, a client bought some property, and I had to drive to take pictures of the property, and I had to drive right by the soup kitchen. And I just, I had a death grip on my steering wheel. I kept saying, there's got to be another way back to my office.
And Winston-Salem, the only screwier place for roads than East Winston is Hickory. And I got lost in East Winston, so bad that if I'd have popped up in High Point, it would not have surprised me. And an hour later, I'm coming down another road called Patterson, and I passed the soup kitchen again. And I said, I give up. I give up.
I give up. And I pulled into the parking spot, and I went to the back door, and there was back then no bell. There was, you know, and I ended up coming in the front door, an extra front door of the soup kitchen.
And I cleared my throat, and these two ladies cleared about three inches off the ground, because the door I came in was always locked. And I said, I'm supposed to come volunteer. And they said, well, we've got this job called a kitchen leader, and we need some kitchen leaders. Do you have any experience? And I said, well, I worked up to relief manager for a PCN, and I worked for ARA in college. I think I can handle it. So they put me to work, and it was a great blessing for decades. Darrell Bock Wow.
I have heard the part where the door wasn't, this is the first time it was unlocked, but I didn't hear it. I never put the connection to, this was God's way of ensuring, right, that the pride aspect of, I'm not really, I'm not really, you know, there's something in it that says I'm really not addicted. And so many addictions that I've dealt with in my own life, there's something like, well, you know, I'm bad, but it's not that bad. Jay Smith Well, yeah, I really wanted to be that type person that could have one or two drinks and just quit. And I knew I wasn't. But, you know, every so often something would come up, you know, I was in sales all those years, I had managers that had real drinking problems. And, you know, every once in a while, I would think, you know, you could have one, just try one. And me going down there every week kept reminding me, no, there's nothing in it for you. It's dangerous.
Darrell Bock Isn't that amazing? And it's so fascinating to me that, again, you know, we often we think we're waiting on God, but clearly, you know, he's waiting on us. And so, you know, what's your story along those lines? We would love to hear it, 866-348-7884, 866-34-TRUTH.
You know, I think about the Jesus labor love car repair labor for single moms and widows. I can't tell you how many times I was waiting on God to help somebody. God, you need to help them. You need to help them. And often he would say, well, Robbie, if you want them to be helped so much, why don't you help them?
And then interestingly, I would enter in and he would do amazing things. Well, what's your story? 866-348-7884. We got the Princess and the Pea coming up after the break, along with Anne Ault. Stay tuned. Announcer You're listening to the Truth Network and truthnetwork.com. Yes, it's another episode of famous fairy tales, the radio program where you learn the rest of the stories from your childhood. We're here today in the village market where there are all kinds of fruits and vegetables for sale.
It's awfully crowded. Oops, excuse me. We're seeking Her Highness Princess Winifred. Sorry, I just happened to over here, but are you looking for me? You're Princess Winifred? That's me. Take no notice of this old apron. I've had it for ages.
I never could get those tomato stains out. But Your Highness, you're selling squash and onions at a market stall? Just just call me Winnie, if you don't mind. Yeah, I get that a lot. But it's honest work.
We sell the produce grown at the castle to pay for the upkeep of the place. A princess should pull her weight, I always say. I seem to remember that you went through quite a difficult time proving that you were a real princess. Oh, that. And you proved you were of royal blood by not being able to sleep on a tall stack of mattresses with a single pee underneath. My back still aches just thinking about it.
I'll never do that again. So you're a real princess? Maybe, maybe. But that's not my real identity. What? Then who are you? I'm a daughter of a king. You mean?
That's right. King Jesus. Ever since I've accepted him as my Lord and Savior, my true identity lies with him. I may live in a castle today, but I know someday my address will be in heaven.
A daughter of the king. That's a wonderful thing to be. Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Well, yes, I do. Then someday we will be neighbors in heaven. And meanwhile, today I'm making sure that our people have plenty of fresh fruits and veggies to eat. So may I interest you in this nice rutabaga?
Or maybe some kumquats? As you just heard, friends, the words happily ever after are much more complicated than you might think. Tune in again next time when we hear another story on famous fairy tales, the radio program where you hear the rest of the stories from your childhood. Whispers of hope today on The Christian Car Guy Show. And that that you just heard was, of course, famous fairy tales with our very own Ann Alt. And, you know, how fun it is to hear the rest of the story. And we've got some more of those coming up.
In fact, we're going to record Pinocchio here coming up, I think, in the next few days. And I've got to end with me. But before I get to that, I want to go to Joe and Charlotte as a story to share. Hey, buddy. Good morning. How are you? I'm good. Thank you for doing your show.
I really love listening to it. Oh, thank you for calling in. I'm excited. But I do have a story of hope for you.
Good. So, um, for years in in, let's see, in 2007, we lost our oldest son, Matthew to melanoma. And he was 25 years old. And he was the oldest of all of our boys. And our second oldest Richard was just traumatized by the whole thing.
And he really struggled made a lot of poor decisions. And I just continued to pray, pray, pray for him that the Lord would intervene in his life. And it took many years, probably many years of continually praying that he would turn to the Lord.
And let me tell you, just to make a long story short, nobody loves the Lord more than Richard, I swear he is just on fire for the Lord. And so here's others out there who just have given up or just saying that their child because it is the greatest gift to know your children are walking in the Lord. And if there's others out there who have just given up hope or who just think that that will never happen, keep praying for that. Keep praying because we know that we pray for God's will and we know that that is God's will. And if we pray with belief that he will perform, it'll happen. It will happen. Just keep praying.
It will happen. And I'll tell you, it happened for us better than we had ever, ever imagined. And now, Richard is very, very sick. And nothing helps him more than walking with the Lord. Wow.
What a story. And so let's pray, Joe, for Richard while we're at it since we've got right here. Lord, thank you for Joe. And I thank you for her testimony. And we do pray for all those listening with prodigals that he would help us all to continue to pray for those children that they would grow with their walk with you, Lord.
Nothing like she said would be better than that. And so we pray for Richard and his health. Lord, do you know exactly what's going on and why? And so we pray that he would sense your presence like never before and that you would touch his body, that he might be such a light to others as they walk in the light that he is shedding through which experiences you've given him, as I know all too well. And so again, I thank you for Joe. I thank you for Richard. And I thank you for Matthew who certainly was a gift in the time that we had him.
And I thank you from Mother's heart. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Amen.
Thank you, Robbie. And just keep the faith, people. Keep that hope because God is able and he is willing. He wants everyone to turn to him.
Everyone. Keep praying. I love it. I love it. Thank you, Joe. God bless. God bless. Thanks for all you do, Robbie. You have a great day.
Bill, you looked like you were going to say something. No? Just a little check that. Yeah, that's tough, isn't it?
That's really, really hard. So we do have Ann Alt here, the princess herself, or should I call you Winnie? Just whatever you want to call me, honey. It's ever so much fun. I love doing Christian Carguy Theater. It is such a gift to me in my life. And, you know, all the little gifts over the years the Lord gave me, it's so fun to use them. They're his glory.
They really are. And, you know, it's neat. Alan Kennedy, who has written for Christian Carguy Theater for years and years and years, wrote this episode. And she's written Pinocchio for us to record here next week. And so we're excited to – I asked – I told Ann yesterday she better practice growing her nose all weekend. It's very long now. Quite long, yes.
So the show today, Ann – I know Ann lives in Mississippi now. And so she can't listen to the – but the question of today is, when did you wait on God only to find out he was actually waiting on you? Boy, is that the truth. You know, especially when we feel God is calling us to do something that is ambitious or seemingly impossible. And it makes me think, you know, in terms of acting and acting for his glory.
And I think back to when I was fairly new as an actress in New York and then went to Hollyweird. But I, you know, I felt like he said, start a group at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, you know, start an acting group. And, you know, I balked a bit, because it was ambitious to do that, frankly. But I did it. There were 12 of us the first night.
Well, that grew into two equity-waiver theaters on the campus of Hollywood Presbyterian Church. I mean, it paid to obey. When God says, do something – do it. Because out of that, I know there were many that were drawn even closer to the Lord through my humble gift of just doing it, you know. So I encourage anybody out there who's listening and God is saying, do this – do it.
Because you just don't know what God's going to do with it. Like Bill was talking about. I don't know if you heard his story earlier that God had told him to go work in a soup kitchen, but at the same time he was, you know, sober and trying to stay that way and how God used that in his own journey. You know, it's a similar thing. I would imagine in Hollywood, if you think back to that time, you probably felt all alone, like I'm the only Christian out here amongst all these people acting the way they are. But then through starting that association at the church, what did you find out? There's amazing.
I know because I know Brian and I know Jesse and I know a lot of those folks that came out of that group that have been actors on Christian Car Guy Theater over the years that he gave you a real group of friends that you live with to this day, right? Yeah, absolutely. And it seriously does pay to obey because, you know, if you're feeling that tug at your heart to do what you feel the Lord is saying to do, and yet the enemy would love to say, oh, you're not going to be able to do that. You can't handle that. You're not sufficient for that. Just do it.
Just do it because it's paid to obey. And I mean, just starting Actors Co-op the first night, there were 12 of us, how ironic, that magical number. Oh, and I hear that music. We've got to go to a break. And while we're on that break, you can be thinking of a story that you can call us with your story of when did you wait on God when actually he was waiting on you. 866-348-7884 is the number to call in and share 866-344-TRUTH. We'll be right back.
You're listening to the Truth Network and truthnetwork.com. Whispers of hope today on the Christian Car Guy Show. When did you wait on God only to find he was waiting on you? We would love your stories. We've certainly been blessed by some today. Think about them all week.
866, the number to call in, 866-348-7884, 866-348-7884. I love, love, love your calls and I love your stories. So again, we've got Bill Mixon here with us and we've got Ann Alt in Mississippi today. And so interestingly, for all those listening, I would want you and covet your prayers for both Bill and Ann as Bill, I hope you don't mind me mentioning, that Monday he's going in for open-heart surgery and new adventures.
And so, and repairing a valve and some blockage bypass and stuff like that. And then Ann is currently in the, in the throes of brain cancer. And so, and so she is actually still functioning on half a brain.
She's still playing the scarecrow in her role, if I only had a brain, yeah. But Ann, you know, this is a remarkable thing. So when you heard that episode of, you know, Ann, she doesn't have much memory. And so I get a chance to tell her a line and, you know, and she repeated and she did it right. That's how gifted she is, Bill. I mean, you have to see, she's never, she's not looking at a script or read the line. You know, in other words, I'm giving her the line.
And what you heard a minute ago was pretty much a first take right through. There was maybe one or once or twice throughout the whole thing that either one of us redid something that was said to try to get it more clear, but that's how gifted she is. In other words, she didn't really know what she was recording.
She didn't really even know that her name was Winifred. In other words, all that stuff, it just blew me away because I would give her the line. Like your line is this and she just said it.
And so all I edited out was me telling her what the line was. It was ever so fun. It was.
It was. And so I'm so blessed. I love doing Christian Car Guy Theater. You know, I mean, I may be going blah, blah, blah, but I can do theater.
And especially Christian Car Guy Theater. I love it. Just love it. You're such a sweetheart. Oh, it's a joy. And again, Ellen wrote those for us, especially to do these little shorter episodes.
And so, like I said, we'll be doing Pinocchio here quickly. But let's pray for Bill and Ann while we can, while we have time. We're waiting on your call to tell us with your story. So Lord, I thank you so much for our friends, for Bill and for Ann. And as they both are in this season in their life where they're waiting on you for healing, they're waiting on you for whatever is coming next. I know both love, love, love you, Lord. And so I pray that you would touch both of them, that you would help the doctors to do what they need to do and help the doctors to not do what they don't need to do. And that you would give them great favor in the houses of healing where they go and, you know, stop infections, things like that. I pray for their families as I know they're really struggling through, you know, it's sometimes easier to be the patient than it is to be the family. So Lord, I pray that you would be with them and guide them through this time as well. Again, I just pray your hand of blessing on both of them. And I thank you so much for doing life with me for many, many, many years. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Oh, and bless Robby.
Robby, that is so meaningful. And bless you, dear, dear brother. It's just so fun still to do Christian Cardiac Theater. I love it.
Yeah, Bill, you were going to say? Yeah, I just had some really neat miracles that surrounded the heart surgery. And one, my daughter who works at the Children's Hospital at Chapel Hill, the hospital there had changed jobs and become a clinical research coordinator a year ago. Well, she's working for one of their top heart specialists that does, there's a way to fix a valve through your leg.
So she knew all about what's going on. But her boss knew my surgeon and had all kinds of really wonderful things to say about my surgeon. And then it turned out that the person across the street from me works in the recovery room for the cardiac unit. So when I come out of surgery, that's the unit I will go in. And he had unbelievably wonderful things to say about my surgeon. He said, this is the person that I want to work on me. And then it turned out my GP was married to the surgeon that I'm supposed to work with.
Then a friend this on the school board, her husband had surgery, and he was the surgeon that worked on her. So in just in a few days, everywhere I looked, I heard God saying, Yeah, I don't know what more to say to you. This is the person that I've picked, and it's going to take care of all that's going to go on. And then there were some other folks that I talked to that made me feel a whole lot better about what's going on. Yet you either see the miracles around you, you don't believe in coincidences, you understand that God is talking to you.
And it's amazing. That's right before your face right in your ear, all the things that God does to reassure you. No, I love that.
I love that idea. And we talked about it during the break, Bill and I did that, you know, one of the gifts that God gives us is the ability to see the miracles, right? It was no, you know, small thing that, you know, Ann happened to come to do a book interview or something with Stu Epperson, and I met her and she started to listen to Christian Kargai, the show, and she heard me do the Sammy the, I forget, starter, Sammy the starter, whatever it was. And she called me and said, Robbie, can you do that together? And that was the beginning of that.
And it was no coincidence, you know, clearly that, you know, you're running into these surgeons or your daughter went to work at that particular. And the ability to see those things is to see the hand of God, right? Absolutely. Yeah. And so, Ann, when you think about that right now, as you're staying with your brother who's also a paramedic, fireman, all sorts of stuff, right?
You're a boy. Yes. It's so, I mean, God is so faithful. He is just so faithful. And just, you know, it pays to obey, pay to obey.
And for next steps, if he tells you to do something, do it. There are always reasons for it because one thing will lead to another. And we're all, let's face it, this is earth life, but we're all in a healing process one way or the other, aren't we? You know, we're all kind of imperfect. Yeah. It's a learning and a loving part of hope, right? That as you wait, there's so much to learn. There's so much to love. And even in the opportunity, you know, is unfortunately the suffering, and there's a lot of people watching you guys, that it's no coincidence, you know, that your hope is contagious.
Yeah. And the thing is, too, even if you're going through a challenging time, you know, I always say it pays to obey, keep the faith, keep praying, you know, even if you're, and we're all of us going through one challenging time for one reason or another. This is earth life. This is just the way it is till we get to heaven with him. But it's seriously, even in the worst of times, or, you know, the times where you think, I can't possibly be useful. Well, yes, you can. If God says you can, and if he tells you to do something, do it. There you go. That's what I've found.
Because you're never going to wait for perfect circumstances to do what he tells you to do. Perfect. Well, we've got to go, Ann.
