Brenda Lurtey's Journey Through the loss of her young son.
Why, I wondered, did Jesus heal Lazarus but not Todd? Did I not have enough faith? Where was the miracle I prayed for? "Hope, fear, disappointment, joy, and sorrow tint and shape Brenda's faith in God as she watched Todd's illness deepen and death draw near. In the end, the God who sent His Son into the world to save us all is the God Brenda describes as saving her from profound grief and loss." -Dan Brooks, pastor "Todd's sweet submission to suffering made a lasting impression on me. Few people have impacted me the way Todd did." -Carol Loescher, medical doctor "Todd's diagnosis held the capacity for utter devastation. Instead, Todd was one of those truly remarkable kids who was able to live out his short time with absolute grace. The manner in which Todd and his family lived his last year demonstrate just how powerful it can be to call upon your faith." -John Chandler, surgeon Brenda Lurtey is a fun-loving wife and mother. She loves to swim, spend quality time with friends, bake biscotti, and formulate new recipes based on classics. Brenda has been married for twenty-three years and has been blessed with three sons and one daughter. She currently lives with her husband and children in Greenville, South Carolina.
We call this the other big Chronicles 22 God's doing a whole lot of stuff and it really clear what he's done a lot of things for a lot of folks, and every single day I get your amazing stories of how God is brought situations. It seem like I couldn't trace of the billionaires like the last thing I would ever want to happen in my life. And then I see how God's represented people in them through that and so we get to see like I want everybody listen to know that whatever is happening your life is like second Corinthians chapter 1 is going to come from like godly comfort.
But out of all the effort is going to comfort you with the comfort that you can confidently and so such is the case, as Rex have a friend of the Everson family. Christie went to Bob Jones University of validated and one of his professors why is Brenda Murty my same error.
Yes and Brenda has quite a story that I know you would be blessed. I think you may have of crying with me, but it's okay because you know in order for faith to be where God wants it to be.
We got a lot through some stuff in life) and so maybe to just let the cat out of the bag right from the beginning so people can relate is Brenda lost her son and how old was he when you must be he was 16 he had just turned six. While in her book. It's called your eyes saw. Again, a beautiful picture of Britain and her son and in the course we get to go on the journey with her today. First few minutes, but in hopes that you that you pick up this book, especially for people that you know that have lost a child.
Enter in this journey, like man I mean here's here's an opportunity created journey with with Brenda and I as she shares that stories of Brenda on what happened so when Todd was 15 years old. We arrived and extended family trip to Disney and came into my room mom eyesight hurt and I immediately felt panic. I don't know why I would but I just maybe that man drawn on the ride. When we got home it still hurts so it lasts about 15 pounds. Anyway, we took Dr. and the doctor ordered an x-ray and said I see something and then we went to specialists and he said I want to CT scan and he said I see a tumor and I said you think it's cancer and he suggested, and I fell apart really fell apart and in this tumor was where this tumor was located around his vena cava, so we wailed vena cava.
I have no idea what and I imagine most people listing what so vena cava it. I think it's one of the largest arteries going to your heart. I'm not sure but it was bad and so we had a biopsy and I remember praying okay Lord doctors are not saved. This is how you get the glory will go in and they won't find everybody's brain and when you find it okay Lord God, and he went and found it and I was like okay all right Lord.
So now what you do Lord is bill they had became up, they found out that the button at the camp that it was cancer and I said okay Lord. Now you get the glory because you'll heal him well in three weeks. The tumor had doubled in size, very dangerous and just a minute I'm a cancer and I had lymphoma okay and one of the things that you really not expecting when you get this diagnosis is.
You are now in the world's largest waiting, waiting for the next test.
Next biopsy the next whatever and so here you gone from, mom and I got it you know all should more than a complete like world change in and now all of a sudden everybody you are now no longer just Brenda Butcher you're in it, so everybody is asking you not how is Brenda doing right there asking is adjacent was Todd Todd Bascom house, Todd was amazing, and that's what helped me so much when when I fell apart.
Just thinking. Is it cancer the day the doctor came in and it is cancer. I felt peace that passes understanding, and I remember, this is what it feels like it was an amazing I didn't fall apart. I had as much peace in my heart that as I do now and I looked over at Todd and Asa Todd are you okay yeah I'm fine what happened in his life was something I was given a front row seat to the peace that passes all understanding in his car.
I never saw him cry about the fact that he had cancer. Not once. Maybe what I think when it was back again, but he was amazing in and that comforted my heart see God take care of him. Wow so you got the that and then the tumor doubles. So now you really what you doing God, you're supposed to show your glory. How you get the glory if it's even worse. So we went to MMS in Charleston and a transplant team removed football sites tumor his right kidney part of his liver, gallbladder, okay, now you have the glory, God, and in January, what you doing God. This is started in October 24 of October 23 for this is your life in December that Christmas break for Christmas. The tumor was they had removed it and I thought okay now we feel like one will be fine in January in back then in place. What you doing God. I thought we had a plan and and then just we tried think we tried to get them into St. Jude tried in Boston and when all hope is gone okay Lord there's nothing we can do but trust you will do a miracle in remove this tumor and then he dies and who are you, God, I don't know who you are. Not everybody was praying this is the way you get the glory. Heal the right guy to get the picture in your husband is a professor at Bob Jones University} there's no way that this is happened here that we pray for you, answer our prayers we say heal and that's not the way it was fillet with having to find out who he was and and coming in to realize I don't get to put God in my football huddle and called the shots.
She I she is true to who he says he is not who I make about to be you and I learned I am learning that and how long ago was in two months.
It will be nine years and but I learned that God that Todd's days were determined. That's why the book is called your I saw your eyes saw my unformed substance in your book were written every one of them.
The days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them and I learned that God had already determined his days in cancer didn't cut his life short. It was only ever going to be until May 10 and that was life-changing for me to realize that all of our days are numbered and we can't link them.
We can't shorten them there. God has those days number again and I thought of Lazarus in the midst of my journey, Lord, why would you kill him and not Hill Todd, you know, they prayed and healed them. I would find in there was more that I had to learn God waited come to kill Lazarus because the people had the Jewish people had to see that there is a dead man that God literally raised to life and they wouldn't scene them. If you to come right away.
They would about what he was just sleeper in a coma. God had to take a dead man to raised to life for them to know this is really the resurrection and the life and an evening that verse. Jesus wept.
I realized God took no delight in my pain. He he wept with the people at the tomb of Lazarus even knowing what he was about to do because he saw their pain and he took no pleasure in taking Todd, but he had things to teach me and far-reaching things more than I'll ever get to see that I don't even see that God is possibly doing in think of the book of Job and and how Job never knew why he was suffering but there was a conversation that took place between God and Satan that Joe didn't know about and there was many things Job had to learn about God is so you went there to start right. He's gone right it's dark matter.
You got don't talk to. What time the light one day I went to Todd's grave and I plopped down I said, Lord, why did you kill him in Charleston. If you would just take him away that you're so mean and it was like God said to give you time and that realization of all the got to do as a family from from that surgery in November until the time he died, you did give us time like he could've just taken back in November gave us the gift of time and at that point I started listening like what else to have to teach with orbit.
I mean after you die. There was some darkness there but again when I realized that that Todd's days were numbered. I thought you didn't have to give them to me at all. I got his mom. What a privilege to be his mom for 16 years.
So I started to be grateful for the time and then I was ready to listen to what "what else to what what a great invitation to her book okay because when I looked at the titles of the chapters 1 to just jump out at me is part family father happen. Started Disney World one of the chapters is Dollywood so obviously you're celebrating the time through the book with the listener with the reader think about was with. That's all part of how God walks you through what he actually was doing. He gave us many opportunities to meet people and just bring joyful memories that our family could draw upon. That was just really precious that we got to meet her and other people in this God brought a lot of joy in the midst of hard times.
The book again is called your eyes saw in the ME author Brenda and you know it's it's really a cool thing. When you write a book but there's one chapter that she could hardly wait right for the reader like man I can hardly wait till they see this time. What is I want people to know that at the very end when Todd died that piece was there and in that moment of his passing. I was holding his hand and I had been talking to him I wanted the insurance lot people said you know when he passes he's going to see Angels in your music and all listen. None of that was happening. I kept asking him and he was kind of wasn't in a coma he would answer once in a while, but the last thing I said to him was Todd. You see, Jesus and he said not yet. I was holding his hand in a few moments later I started to hear the death rattle and it lasted maybe 30 seconds and right before the death rattle started holding hands and he took us from erupting over mine like once or twice not like jerky but just very deliberate and after he passed, and any Denny died and I felt like in that moment that he was telling me I see him now and I as I think of it now because he was giving me that assurance and single bite when that was his moment. He he was probably in terrible pain or whatever, but he said goodbye. Let me know.
I see you and so I love that part and I'll never forget that that goodbye got have a feel of the book for people better. Going through you know, this kind of thing that we don't understand this time but God provides comfort and I'm sure you hear about voice and again is your eyes and the website. People get Amazon and Barnes & Noble.com all online. Well, thanks for the damage book publisher wonderful wonderful. Your eyes saw you think you are blessed
