Burt Young is an immediately recognizable character actor whose half-muttered voice and flinty gaze made him the perfect fit for Rocky as Sylvester Stallone's ill-mannered brother-in-law, Paulie. Without any further ado, here's Bert Young with his story. Uh yes, I'm Bert Young.
I was born in Corona. Queens, New York. I have the greatest parents. My pop. It became like a a ministerial and a high school.
His name was Marco. He's a sheet metal maca come right for Iceman. It could do one at the build anything. Because Smock is pretty good too. He's a tough guy himself, you know.
He was a great guy. My mother, Josephine, she lived to about 93. the most beautiful uh lady ever. protected me from everything. Mama.
Knew I couldn't do wrong. When I needed money as a kid, my father would give me 25 cents. I say, Mama, I need two gra. She might write out a check, sign the check. That was it.
She spoke. He listened. The only trouble I ever had is when I left home. I believed in myself in life. Uh 17 pro fights.
I never lost a profile. I believed in myself. That's very good, Fighter. Costamata was my first manager. Charlie Goldman was a trainer.
The who trained Marcia. He converted me from self-pod to right-handed, you know. In those days you couldn't fight left-handed, you know. But fighting was part of my nature. And I did an exhibition with Muhammad Ali.
That was one of my hottest spots. Yeah at the Olympic Auditorium in California. We've become fast friends, very good. You never said we give her a box. Who gets sick of getting punched in the face?
Yeah. Growing up I was early in the Marine Corps 16. I was half a hoodlum, you know, really. A carpet lay-in business. Sixty men working.
everything on the short dollar, you know. I was pretty unhappy. And this beautiful girl. She was a barmaid. And the Jackson Heights Jinmo.
Best time. Ask her if she'd ever thought of being an actress. and she lit up. And she says she wants to study with Lee Strasburg. And I thought that was a girl.
I don't know who the hell Neast Raspberg was. But I figured I can get it in in anywhere.
So I found out who he was. Wrote him a letter. I don't know if acting has anything for me. But uh I'm treading water. Uh CV.
And it did. She said, I never saw such tension in a man's face.
So but uh I fear you're an emotional library, he says. Would you work with me? Yes. and I was able to take myself serious.
Well, I read the script, Rocky, the Rocky script. It was like a masterpiece of simplicity. It was half a caricature, half reality. But it was very touching, very moving. It was like a Moving poetry is beautiful.
I'm in the commissary. in California. A young guy s squats next to me. Yes. Mr.
Yogong. Sylvester Stallone. I wrote Rocky. Nice f congratulations, oh bruv. He says You you gotta do it.
Um I let me twist that arm a little bit. I'm gonna do it, you know. That's only first marriage again. I was the highest paid Acted in the first rocky. More than he was.
I it was a strong piece of writing. I didn't take a chance. I dove into it. You don't have to go too far for him. He's very.
Bright. And funny too.
Well, we worked very well together, very good. We never had a horse. Moment, really. No, I like hornboards. And he's fast, he shoots fast.
We would have shot half the Rocky by now, you know. No. I never knew it was gonna be. go through the seal and I didn't know what huge heads were. Rocky that would crush in the door though.
And that was a lot of fun, you know. My papa was m more t much more tired of him. I was acting before he died. And uh He didn't understand it. 'Cause he knew Maza hold them.
We'd bring them to screenings early. I had a projection room. In Beverly Hills in my house out there. We'll show them some of the movies. That was he could not get it.
Couldn't get it. I I I don't think it can. Put me in a bottle. There's an actor's uh an artist. Perhaps the acting of a little more structure.
I pick Ammunition, bullets to use. to relax into to fatten up. Could be greed, it could be Anger. And I fatten that up. personal things that I use to get there.
Bolie was quick and crafty. Uh but uh Yeah, many personal harvest that were. Not me, you know. I made him as warm as I could make him. But you had to forgive the succor.
It was pretty. Ugly guy many times, you know. They miscast me. I'm a lovable son of a gun. Uh It's just I go straight astray here and there.
