I grew up in a in Detroit, born in Detroit. in a very middle-class family, lived in a two-family house. with my mother's sister living upstairs. We live downstairs. with an open stairwell so it's like uh Almost like having two mothers and you know My cousins were like my brother.

Very typical Midwestern. middle class area and uh and having a successful uncle that lived on the other side of the streets, so to speak. And had a big impact in my life when you see success, and you know, you realize, hey, you know. I came from the same place. The opportunity is there.

No one gave it to them. You're listening to Stephen Ross, whose uncle is the late Max Fischer, who created one of the largest gas station chains in the Midwest, was one of the most influential Jewish philanthropists for decades, and Stephen believes was the person who had the greatest impact. on his life. But I mean, you know, it wasn't something that, you know, It was a relationship where I learned. I didn't inherit anything from him.

I had nothing. But I learned so much and it was such important, valuable lessons. You know, in life, there's much more than money could have ever bought. you know In those days, things were very segregated. You know, the Jews lived here, the Gentiles lived there, and There was a lot of anti-Semitism.

But he transcended that. You know, I mean, the fact that he could do business with Henry Ford You know, he was very anti-Semitic and he was able to be mobile in both aspects of it I thought was very, very important. to be successful, you know? And most people really rather stay within, you know, in those days. there was strength by protecting each other.

And that's typically how the Jews survived all those times. And I think to recognize the fact that we live in a in a society Very good. totally mixed you want to be able to work in all aspects of it and bring people together. In the summers, I worked at the company. I mean I started in In the basement, if you will, cleaning it up.

You know, when I was in high school and worked in a gas station and But it wasn't the kind of thing where you know you had mentors that would come and really help you and give you advice and, you know, people would take you under their wing, if you will. He wasn't that. Hmm. But you know. I mean, you can learn an awful lot about a person from afar and You you can learn an awful lot by just listening and watching and you know, and hearing and I'm being attuned to what's going on.

Max offered to pay for Stevens' college tuition, preferably at his alma mater of Ohio State. But Stephen chose Michigan and his dad. wouldn't even consider the help. My father was very proud. He didn't have a lot of money in my My father wouldn't accept it.

But finally, when I graduated, law school. and my father didn't have the money for me to get a master's and move to New York. you know I went to Max and I said, Is the offer still available? Because I'd like to go to New York. to get my master's in tax law.

and he lent me the money so I could go there. and I told him I'd pay him back. And I would say I was out probably I was probably 30 and I had the money, I'd earned enough money to pay him back. And I wrote him a check and I gave him the check. And he said, Stephen That's great.

I really appreciate that. I will not accept your check. But I want you to make me the promise you'll help other people when you're in that situation to do that.

So one. I tried to pay him back, which made me feel good, that I could go to him and say, hey. Look what happened. I'm able to pay you back. But I mean since then obviously I've, you know, uh I mean, you know, I looked at him and how charitable he was and saw the good things he did.

You know, if you have the ability to do it, I think it's an obligation. If you have the ability to really impact society in doing things, you should you you have an obligation to do it. Steven bootstrapped his company related into becoming the largest real estate developer in the country, and inspired by his uncle Max, he's also become one of its largest. Philanthropist.

So, um I I actually, and I just tell this story now. And to show you how I was somewhat competitive with him and knowing, hey, how successful he was, I was going to get there. I I give Uh when I was um going to give a gift to the University of Michigan. I told them, you know, the business school at Ohio State's the Fisher School of Business.

So when they asked me to give a gift to Michigan, a significant gift, I was pretty successful at that point, I said, well, how would be the name of the school?

So they told me the price and I know how much he paid, donated, you know, to the school named after him.

Well, at that point, he gave 20 million. You know, Michigan costs $100. It didn't cost. I mean, I don't, you know. But I've given a lot more subsequently, you know, but that's irrelevant.

You know, and it was a different it's probably 10 years, 10, 15 years later. What, Michigan? But I said, Max, I'm going to one-up you. I said. 'Cause Michigan, you know, and Ohio State, very competitive, which we used to always kind of uh bet on the football games and you know he was a big big Ohio State fan.

And so, um Yes, he played football at Ohio State, you know, as well.

So when I gave the gift to Michigan, He spoke. at that and it was incredible. We're on the front page of papers and everything and it was kind of a It's a day that I'll never forget, you know. And it made me feel good knowing that Michigan was named after me and Ohio State, the Fisher School, the business school named after him.

So I mean that was kind of a You know, A fun type thing near the end. He was probably in his 90s at that point in time. Yeah. The students there and they're crowded. And the professor it was an incredible day.

It was incredible. Just a picture of the two of us, you know, is...

Something very memorable. When he wasn't feeling well, his wife would ask me to come and Just come and spend more time with them and talk.

So I moved from Miami. where I had a place. up here in Palm Beach. This is, you know, probably... Five years before he died, but I'd come and see him almost every weekend or something.

He wanted to come and just talk, you know, and we'd talk about life and His life, how he got to where he, you know, and things like that. We're reminiscing, and I had asked him. You know, so unique, I was successful at that point. And it was like my grandfather came here with nothing. He became very successful.

and independent my uncle became successful and i became you know as successful in different areas. You know, the genes of, you know, where's that come from? You know, trying to figure out how do you do that, you know? because it's three generations. To have that type of success, you know, you want to get a feel for it, you know, and how what he thought.

I mean, certainly you have to have the intensity and the... and the drive. But where'd that come from? And I think it's watching, I mean, where'd I get that drive? I think.

that when you learn that it's not all about you and you're doing the right thing. And you're trying to do things to really make the world a better place is what I always heard him talk about. that what he thought his goal in life was. And hearing that and it You know, it made sense to me, and I saw it. I adopted that myself.

you know, that we're here to make the world a better place so it's not all about you. I think when you have those type of values, I think it pays off. You know? We're the largest developer in the United States. You know, there's the world, so You know, what can I tell you?

And then you ask me, well, what do you think of this country? Why do you do things? You gotta love this country. I mean, the ability to do something like that is incredible, and at the same time, You know, knowing the things that I'm doing and the good that I'm doing and enjoying it, you know, and think it's a Kind of fun to make money than to spend it. But what's even better is you give, I really believe because I've raised money, is you give till you feel good, you know?

And there's nothing better feeling. than the ability to give. and seeing the benefits. that other people have and what the world does by the things you're doing. And so What better environment?

And now When you see society putting people down for doing that and trying to find cracks of something that they might have said, they might have done, that has nothing to do with anything. You know, and it's It's bad to be successful. I mean, I don't know poor people who hire people, but that's beside the point. And That's how you take people down, and that's what people are looking for in social media. Do the right thing.

And uh and that's why I believe in Things will take care of itself. I feel very fortunate and very lucky, and I pinch myself. And a special thanks to Steve and Ross for sharing. His story. His Uncle Max was a huge influence on Stephen's life.

and as he put it, it was the relationship and the lessons learned. more than anything that money could buy. And it's so true. When we talk about capital, we always have to remember that human capital is the source of it all. Without it, there's nothing.

I want to take a second to talk about something that's personal to me. I've had the privilege of working closely with Robert Kraft for a long time. And one thing I've always respected is how seriously he takes up standing up to hate. As a Jewish athlete my identity is something I am proud of.
