We're close in age. but have little else in common. Mitchell Rutledge, aka Big Mitch, was born black and poor in Georgia. I was born kind of brown and middle class in New Jersey. He never met his father, I still talk to my 94-year-old father every week.
He dropped out of high school in his early teens and was illiterate into his early twenties. I was surrounded by books growing up and finished graduate school in my early 30s. Big Mitch spent the last 44 years of his life in Alabama prisons. for killing a man. But this is not a story about an innocent man sentenced to prison for for a crime he didn't commit.
Big Mitch never denied the crime or made excuses for it. This is the story of my friend's spiritual transformation while serving his life sentence. It's also about a friendship only God could have engineered. A friendship that began with a single Sunday morning call. Through these weekly conversations, I hope you come to know and love him as much as I do.
Here's episode number 12, our conversation on April 7th, 2024. A few episodes ago, we heard from one of my close friends, Bo. As he sought counsel from Big Mitch regarding his struggle with infidelity. Today, we hear his wife Donna's perspective as she discusses her side of this story with Mitch. Here's Donna.
This is a free call from Mitchell Rutlit. An incarcerated individual at Alabama Department of Corrections. To accept this free call, press one, to refuse this free call, press, two, thank you for using Securus. You may start the conversation now. By all accounts of the world, I could walk away out of this marriage.
Of course, I could have years ago. But something is keeping me fighting, and it gets me mad because I think. Is it me or is it God? What is it? And so, anyway, when you ask the question of how are we doing?
It's just a lot of wrestling. I'm doing a ton of wrestling in my soul because I want to do what God tells me to do. And that looks like to stay married. But I know the way we've continued going these years has it keeps going the wrong way.
So I'm like, God, this is in your hands. It's not me. I got to get out of the way and see what you're going to do.
So that's what I'm trying to do. You know um It's not you. It's not God, it's the enemy. What I mean by that is just the enemy. You can't get to you the way you want to.
So He used both. And the only way you defeat that is Bull gonna have to get spiritual strength in order to be able to not allow the enemy to mislead him. He wants you to lose your faith. He wants you to accept things that you ain't got no business accepting. And if I can say anything right here, when you go into trial, if you can just Put some of your emotions to the side.
and look at it from a spiritual perspective and understand what you're wrestling with. You're not wrestling with flesh and blood right now. You can't change BOGO. I don't care how much you you pray for it and ask God to intervene. But BOGO has to take a step toward God.
I I have told Bo, I said, you have got to hate this.
So much. And then I got to the point where I was like, you got to be. Afraid of God not being in your camp anymore because God can't be in your same camp. if the enemy's in it. It it it can't work like that.
Sure. Yeah. You're 100% right. Oh, you Telling the truth there. And telling the truth.
You told him the truth. Oh, you already on point. I ain't got to tell you nothing. You are you are ready. Living in here, you you you yeah, you see so much all kind of manner of business and you live in it.
And you can't get away from it. Because you live in it. And it runs some people's crazy. It just caused many just to just give up on life. But what I did is I ran to Jesus Christ That's what I did.
And so even after forty some years in here. By his grace and mercy, I still A light shining and make So I I would advise anybody. Even out there. When you try, when you wake up in the morning, thank you. Thank you, Jesus.
Watch over me today and keep me safe. We at work asking for favor. with your coworkers and stuff like that. Thinking for the little ones in your life. People don't do that.
I do it all the time because my situation demands that. because like like it because it's so ever present. is prison in my life. Twenty four seven. It's like a nightmare.
But out there in society where you don't see it, Every time. never present like it is in previous one, but it's there.
So you don't pray. and you don't you don't pray and you don't think it's easy and and that's what's going on a lot of and and uh means like you see it uh When it comes to money, And six, most of them just stop thinking. They they don't do no more thinking. They just don't go right on with it. Whatever makes them feel good, they go with it.
Right, every second. Like you said, ever-present in times of trouble. That's a verse right there that you just keep saying, Mitch. Ever present. That's right.
Ever present, ever present. We're lulled to sleep on this side because, like you said, you're not having the lions and the tigers, if you will, like it is in prison, but we still have it. It's just being hidden, like Liz said earlier. That's right. That's right.
It's more deceptive. And I would like to touch on one thing, and it's going back to what you said about, you know, like with men's, you know, where. We we don't want, you know, women might say where we use that excuse. Satan know man's weak in that area, so what he do, he he comes and get them in that area, but Uh I I use teacher clays. called changing lenses and that's being able to look at it from someone else's perspective.
So I I would I would just act Donald or any female that if they was just change lenses and be able to look at it from a man perspective. But men's need to do the same thing, change lenses and look at it from a female perspective. because we're two different beings, you understand? And you might say, Well, Mitch, you know, uh, you've been locked up, uh Ooh, so many years, you don't know that much about a relationship.
Well, Knowledge is something that God gives you, and wisdom, knowledge, understanding. it transcends all things. But the intimate note that man is weak in these areas. But if you connected with God, he can't get you. See, he can't get me.
Right there, because I've overcame that. He can't get me because I have more reverence for God. A few codes. They say the beginning of wisdom is fear of God.
So I I I got more reasons for God to play with God like that. I he can't he can't get me like that. At least I don't feel he can get me like that. Uh uh but I have been in society, but I I I just don't think he'd get me like that. I would say Donna if you have the opportunities, you know, or any female, you know.
change lenses for a second and and and try to look at it from a male perspective. You guys, the females are they're more for whatever reason. Satan over it. He can't come to them with that. But now we all have our kryptonite.
Whatever female kryptonite is, Satan will come and disguise and get damn well. Uh most men's kryptonite is very r connected to God. It's just sex and money power. That's the kryptonite. That's the weakness.
And and and just on an individual level, we all have kryptonite. You know, some people kryptonite is is food.
Some people kryptonite i is um Video games. Family. Alcohol. Wherever he is. You gotta get it out your life.
And a terrific job on the production, editing, and storytelling by our own Greg Hengler. and Reagan Habib. And what a piece of storytelling, what a piece of advice giving, and how Big Mitch was able to do this without ever having been married and without ever having left prison. But yet, my goodness, he broke through not just with Donna, but with Bo. And I can report that one year later, their marriage.
He's stronger than ever. and they thank Mitch for it in large part. And this whole idea of changing lenses is so good. And this whole idea that we all have our kryptonite, money, power, status, gambling, booze. Food.
Whatever your kryptonite is, Big Mitch says, you gotta get it out of your life. Sunday mornings with Big Mitch, episode 12, here on Our American Stories. Well, most people drive about 40 miles a day, which means you can do all daily stuff no problem. Go to work, grab the kids at school, get the groceries, and still have enough charge to visit your in-laws in the next county. But they don't need to know that. And the best part, you won't have to buy gas at all. The way forward is electric.

This is Radhi Deblukia from A Really Good Cry. I absolutely love being outdoors, even if it's just stepping outside for a bit of fresh air between meals or taking a mindful walk to clear my head. But the one thing that can really ruin that is when my feet feel cramped in my shoes.
So I switched to ultra running, and honestly, it makes such a difference. What I love most is their signature ultra fit comfort balance strength. They have this roomy toe box that lets my toes actually spread and move naturally.
So I really appreciate that. And I feel more grounded and balanced with every single step. It's like my feet can finally do their job using all those little muscles that make me feel stronger the more I move. Whether you are a marathon runner, beginner or advanced, or just getting outside to train, ultras have become my go-to for running and moving mindfully. They fit so well, they're so comfortable, and they just move with you.
