Slicing can be used for so many different things. We're here with our friends from CNN, from Siemens Energy. but have little else in common. Mitchell Rutledge, aka Big Mitch, was born black and poor in Georgia. I was born kinda brown and middle class. in New Jersey. He never met his father.

I still talk to my 94-year-old father every week. He dropped out of high school in his early teens and was illiterate into his early 20s. I was surrounded by books growing up. and finished graduate school in my early 30s. Big Mitch spent the last 44 years of his life in Alabama prisons for killing a man.

But this is not a story about an innocent man sentenced to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Big Mitch never denied the crime or made excuses for it. This is the story of my friend's spiritual transformation while serving his life sentence. It's also about a friendship only God could have engineered. A friendship that began with a single Sunday morning call.

Through these weekly conversations, I hope you come to know and love him. as much as I do. Here's episode 11. Our conversation on Easter Sunday, March 31st, 2024. Where Mitch shares the story of how even he An inmate who scored just below what is considered to be mental retardation on an IQ test.

can still achieve educational success. Let's take a listen. This is a free call from Mitchell Ruttenat. An incarcerated individual at Alabama Department of Corrections to accept this free call press. One, to refuse this free call, press, two, thank you for using Securus.

You may start the conversation now. Joe Siefel, he he he he was a he was a bank robber and um Wow. I get off death row and they move me in the dormitory with him. You know, he was the older guy, he 'Cause Joe Steefer would live and now Joe Steefer would be woof. He might be about ninety or something.

But he didn't look his age, so he he was still real fit.

So I met him and we lived in the same dormitory together. He did he worked in the leather shop and he made leather goods, you know. You real good at your leather craftsman. He he was like a no nonsense guy.

So anyway, uh I know him and I I knew that he was real extremely intelligent, you know.

So, um I have took me easy the first time and, uh And when I didn't pass, the only two things that I missed was I missed it math. And English. But I passed in social studies, science and English literature. I taste those more.

So the only thing I really had to do next, I had to take the old test over, but The points that you score. They were scared.

So really I I really didn't have to worry about Yeah, yeah. because the points that I made in that wouldn't When changed.

So one thing I had to do was pick my grade up in, uh, English And math. Anyway, when the tips first came back, I I got in the back of the line because, you know, I I was intimidated and uh So I I I I saw the teacher shaking guys hand and so on and so on. I got it back in the night. He's a well, bitch. I said, yeah.

He said, I'm sorry, uh You know, in other words, it's been a long time, but you know, you didn't make it this time, but you did good.

So I looked at it. And I made a forty-two point six. But the past detest You had to you had to make it forty forty five point and more.

So I looked at it, I said, shoot, I said, man, I ain't nothing about, but that's three points forgive me there. That's where I looked at it.

So I was encouraged. I I was okay.

So he said, Well, you gonna take it three months later? Good with me. I didn't feel bad. I felt good because I was surprised. I didn't think I'd score that high.

So he said you gotta find somebody to help you with the English. in your mouth. Size of my I gotta find somebody. You have one minute left.

So, um I'm walking through the dormitory, so I'm looking around. And I see Joseph. And I tell Joe Steve, I said, Hey, man, I said, You do pretty good with that mapping, ain't this? He said, Yeah, miss. as I need you.

You see, I helped you man, you know. And and you know, in in an environment like this, you know a lot of guys you know, they you know, they they won't spend the time with you to try to help them, but Joe Seba did that. And man, we he he worked with me three months. And and I was learning, you know, He knew all type of algebra and everything, the English language, synonym, anonym, pronoun, adverb. You know, he he knew everything.

Yeah, we had worked for three months and uh that the test was uh coming up.

So I went out there and but Joe told me, I said, Mitch, man, you gonna pass the test. I said, yeah, man, I believe I'm gonna pass that test. and work harder than we work, you know, and so we he was happy, you know, we went all about business and went out there and took the test.

So, um I came back in, he said, Man, how you think you did? I said, I think I did good, so, you know He said, All right.

So about two, three weeks later, Tiffany's also came back. I I I was still in GED class then, you know, school and everything.

So went out there, he said, Where's the test results and came back?

So me and a few more guys, you know, I get in the back of the line again. You know, And I'm I'm I'm looking, I'm seeing all the dudes, just some dropping their heads, some of them smiling when they come out the little room, the little office where the teacher is.

So uh Come on in. He said, Mitch, come on in. Yeah. He's the um Congratulations. That's a word.

And uh showed me the test and I made a forty-nine point.

Something. He said you did good. He said you you you you scored higher than uh some of the other guys that I thought would score higher than you. And I said, Thank you, Jesus.

So I go in and I tell Joseph and I said, Hey man, uh for this you know, for this celebration, you know. Come on, 'Cause it was a, you know, a grand meal. And uh Grand Meals at that time was, you know, something that we called a a burrito. Uh and what we did, uh, we took suits Some of the sausages Cubes. And, you know, and and season this government and and and put it together and uh crunch the soups up.

Crumps the cheese curl like a cone chips. onions, cuddle some onions in it and uh and stuff like that and uh where we had to ball the water because we didn't have a microwave.

So uh We had to make a makeshift stove for it, uh Oh, yeah, we had sodas and I ain't got all we had sodas, honey barns Yeah, we should have a feast. you know, so have. Anyway, me and Joe, we cooked everything over the stove, and we had target paper, and we were. we'll make it targeted. toilet paper stove.

If you you you roll it up the right way and fix it the right way, it'll burn a long time. Burn long enough for you to really do what you want to do.

So we had cans that we had made and we put hammers on it where we could have what we want in there and and and cook it, you know. over there. and I'm cutting somersaults up and everything, you know. it made a great meal and uh we sat there and we ate that and uh Our dessert was honey bar. Yeah.

These hundred bars and uh Yeah. And we had Coca-Cola. And we sat there, you know, uh we celebrated there, you know the victory. that, uh, I finally got my GED. And once I got my G D I went and uh signed up for Jefferson Davis Junior College.

I I I just thank God. Jesus Christ on his Easter Sunday. I'm just thanking him. for allowing me to be able to still be here. And and after forty-three years improvement in three months.

Gone off all my ladies packed Jesus crowds with it. And a terrific job on the production, editing, and storytelling by our own Reagan Habib and our own Greg Hengler. And what a story you've heard from Big Mitch. A story of just pure generosity from a fellow inmate to pour into him like that for three months Joe C. And what did Joe C.

get out of it?

Well, what we all get out of things when we help people for no other reason than to help them. And my goodness, that big party in the prison, the big feast, Mitch called it, replete with a prison burrito and Coca-Cola. And of course, honey buns to top it all off. Then, what did Big Mitch get? The ability to read the Bible, to write poems, and so much more.
