Pluvicto is not chemotherapy. It's a different treatment that targets PSMA-positive cells. Bluvicto can be used before chemotherapy for some people. Bluvicto is a prescription treatment used to treat adults with prostate-specific membrane antigen-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, or PSMA-positive MCRPC, who have already been treated with hormone therapy and are considered appropriate to delay chemotherapy. Bluvicto involves contact with radioactivity, which may increase the risk for cancer and cause fetal harm.

Drink plenty of fluids, urinate often, use contraception, and talk to your doctor about ways to reduce the risk of exposing others to radiation during and after treatment. Bluvicto can cause low levels of blood cell counts, kidney problems, and infertility. Tell your doctor if you have weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, bleeding, or bruising more easily, an infection or changes in urine. Side effects include decreased blood cell counts, tiredness, dry mouth, nausea, appetite loss, joint or back pain, and constipation. Mitchell Rutledge, aka Big Mitch, was born black and poor in Georgia. I was born kind of brown and middle class in New Jersey. He never met his father. I still talk to my 94-year-old father every week. He dropped out of high school in his early teens and was illiterate into his early 20s.

I was surrounded by books growing up and finished graduate school in my early 30s. Big Mitch spent the last 44 years of his life in Alabama prisons for killing a man. But this is not a story about an innocent man sentenced to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Big Mitch never denied the crime or made excuses for it. This is the story of my friend's spiritual transformation while serving his life sentence.

It's also about a friendship only God could have engineered. A friendship that began with a single Sunday morning call. Through these weekly conversations, I hope you come to know and love him as much as I do. Here's our conversation on March 10th, 2024, where Mitch begins by setting the scene for an original poem he later shares with us called Den of Jackals. He compares prison life to living in a den of jackals.

Everyone is out to get someone else. No one can be trusted. Let's take a listen. This is a free call from Mitchell Rutnet. An incarcerated individual at Alabama Department of Corrections.

To accept this free call, press. 1. To refuse this free call, press. 2. Thank you for using Securis.

You may start the conversation now. Yeah. The Diana Jack was uh I wrote that in uh nineteen ninety six. February the first. nineteen ninety six.

And uh I wrote it at a time I was living in Two Sale. at home in prison. That's where I did thirty one years at and uh that's what uh the delferr was at as well. And It was sold. treacherous in the sense that, you know, guys, the games that they play with each other It it was unfair.

And it it was The dog eat dog, you know, uh someone's strong to survive. And then They didn't have no rules step on one, you know, like in my book I had a guy dude called Pay Cry. He said, Well, I step on the wheat. If I don't step on them, somebody else is gonna step on them.

So That's that's the mentality. And I know him and that's and that's the life he lives. And uh and when he died in prison, you know, people celebrated, you know, it's you know, people was glad that he was gone. Officers as well. But anyway, depending on Jackos, I I was sitting down one night.

after I saw so much go on and I knew a lot of the guys and And I said, Well, man, I need to sit down and write about this and let people know what I see.

So this is what I came up with. They know Everybody know what jackals consist of, you know, in the concept of the jackals, but I'm talking about two leg jackals. Just so uh And when I go into it and I say a campfire, I'm talking about, you know, living areas of where the guys were. They was, you know, four or five might be in a cell together, or four or five might be in a cubicle area where guys live in the dormitory, they're sitting around talking.

So I call that the camp.

So here it goes. I'm living in the den of jackals. The jackals I'm speaking of. A Wands That Woke Book Right. Every jackal performs dishonest and base deeds for his own on another's game.

It's a hard fight living this life. with the tackles. Every tackle is trying to step on the other one. or use the other one. It's a game in the den of jackals.

The owner rule gives no rule. introducing young and innocent freight. to the laws of the game. that mistreat everything and everyone. create a monster.

Innocent. And fairness is only true. In the den on jackals. The only things they respect or lies, envy, jealousy, hate. All of these things are welcome.

and a delightful topic at any campfire in the den of the jackals. I am trapped. In the den of jackals. Life is only given to the strongest jackals. The weakest ones become prey.

It's the beast. From within there rules in the den of jackals. Um Locked up in a harsh environment, as Mitch was and is for so long. It's easy for a man to lose his sanity. But with God to lean on, Mitch managed to not only survive, but to help others thrive.

Because you know you you're wrestling with So many things, and you're trying to stay focused, but you're in the center of you, you're in the storm. And you're just praying and you're trying to stay focused. You're trying to keep your sanity. 'Cause you've been in here so long, they say you go crazy, which a lot of guys do, you know, they they just lose sight of a lot of things. And uh then they give up.

despair take over.

So it's so many things that attack you in here. Just by being in you. And you you have to ward those things off in there and and and and the only way I have better able to add. through the will of God, just through Jesus Christ, just, you know, They're in the center of my being, Jesus Christ bringing me through it. He's giving me wisdom, knowledge, understanding.

He's giving me favor. He protects me as I walk through here. Cheers, I'm I'm up under his umbrella, so And I thank God for that. That's the only way you can make it in here, as long as I've been in there. This this is no joke right here, I'm telling you.

And you've been listening to Big Mitch Rutledge. 45 years in prison. And this was our ninth week of conversations, about an hour each week. Still to this day, having that hour conversation. I will have that hour conversation as long as Mitch is in prison and hopefully one day much longer conversations when he's out.

When we come back, more spiritual insight. from a man who hasn't been in civilian life for almost his entire adult life. Sunday Mornings with Big Mitch continues. Here on Our American Stories. And we're back with Our American Stories and episode nine of Sunday Mornings with Big Mitch. While being locked up for over 44 years, Mitch has met his share of interesting characters who go by names that are just as strange. Here's Mitch on one of the more infamous faces to haunt the prison walls he calls home.

You you you have guys with nicknames, you know, uh All the type of things. Countracker was one of 'em. I met him. I was on the death row, he was in population and I And when I got off Delph Row, you know, I live around him. uh full minute, but he had a notorious reputation, you know, uh Uh it wasn't good.

Hello. from my understanding, you know, he had killed several guys in prison, um, He and another guy killed a younger guy because he The young guy went lit. BM or A BMs or API. Uh He was um He he was You know, and and and even before I came to prison, um, his his reputation w you know, in prison was uh one like, you know, one speak about As you know, you heard his name even before you came to prison if you were anywhere. living around or near the state of Alabama, you know, anybody that been to prison in the state of Alabama, you know you heard guys talk about a guy named Count Tractor.

It was always so it was a eerie thing, even even before I met him. got things I heard about him. Hey, he he was um I the whole thing I can say he was a wicked guy. He always hugged the wall when he walked, you know. You know, Walton is center of it.

oth of the flow like everybody else. He always stayed close to wherever wall or side he was. That's that's where he he hugged that.

So do some contracts right there.

So I said, Oh, it's here. Yeah. And I looked at him, you know, he was walking hugging the wall, you know. Kind of slim, real dog skin guy, kind of slam like by six true, something like that. Yeah.

And the front in the mouth.

Well The two K guys Those teeth was out. or no teeth there.

Well, only all all the things that they're Fort Two T for three or four teeth. before you get to the canines. He was out at the top. You know, I don't know how you got the name contractor, but uh, that may have something to do with it. But anyway uh I had saw him before, so I'm going on yard that particular day, and they taking their floor out there, and we got handcuffs behind our back.

So when we pass by them, you know, we got the officers with us and everything, you know.

So He you know, he looked and smile.

Well, you know. I gave another look the ugliest look I can get him. It was a sincere ugly look. They don't smile back. Yes, there ain't no reason to smile, paintin'.

But uh he had he had um a tourist reputation. Although Mitch encountered many dangerous criminals during his sentence, There was one man who stood out amongst the rest. A man who would become an inspiration to Mitch. as he grew in his faith. Yeah, he got named Big Truck.

He was about six foot eight. Mm-hmm.

But he was he was he was a homogeneous. and he didn't believe in guys taking advantage of younger guys, you know. he if he saw something in you, he'll try to help you out. He he was a good guy. His brother when his younger brother played football for the University of Alabama.

There are but he he he was he was a really, really good guy. Four as What I mean by being incarcerated with him, being locked up with him, he he was about trying to help the young guys. Stay out of trouble. And you know, get your education and stuff like that. He he did that.

So that's first. That's what I. Eventually reflected on Big Pluck, how he treated us. And when I got myself situated in and they found God and and and and got On a new path and reinvented myself by the grace of God. And that's what I need, you know.

Always try. to be uh and continue to be uh a light into a dark path in which an individual is walking. Especially in here, you know. And uh He was God sent in an environment like that. You know, and he did and he stopped a lot of stuff.

He stopped a lot of guys from getting raped. He stopped a lot of stuff. And he he just was a you know, he just was a shining light. in that dog place. But at the same time, You you you you had another guy that he called Boogie Man.

And Plug had to stop him several times, you know, from just, you know, he was just in a on he he was on something else, you know. He was he was about something else, he was about on the negative tip to trying to turn young guys out and all kind of other stuff. And this next poem of Big Mitch's that you're about to hear.

Well, it humbled me to find out that our relationship had motivated him to write it. Let's take a listen. The poem that you motivated me through. Right. His title is Ken Shield.

And I'm speaking about the kinship that have allowed the kinship that It it it's is of Christ. the tension of that, that that individuals that say that they believe in him and that he's their Lord and Savior. Hey. And we have a Uh uh oh. Relationship with him.

He is our father, so we have a kinship with each other. And that kinship It it is what bro Mm Mr. Kim, Miss Miss Norma. and they'll burden a nail rain on you and everyone else are doing each other's lives. And and uh that kinship also Loud or loud.

You and I. to be able to say it here in total. as we talk. and and and relate to each other because of that particular KU.

So what I did or I sat down, I know. I came up with the title can't show. And, um I decided to uh try to uh elaborate as best as I could. Uh come up with something, so I'm going to read it.

So that's the kinship that I'm talking about.

So the title is tension. A kinship that disregards Human wisdom. A king's shield. without the meanings of time. a kinship with profound vision.

A tension that carries to cook. of compassion. And mercy. A kinship that has no boundaries. unstoppable, sent forth To awaken the human spirit.

in order to allow them to hear. to create a whole message at the same time. A kinship spanning the bone. If curls Of a belief. of a belief.

grounded upon Jesus Christ. And you've been listening to Big Mitch Rutledge share stories and insights from his 45 plus years in prison ever since his early twenties, and he also did some time in his late teens. and in the end never really had a family life. and a home life prison. has been his home almost his entire adult life.

But we get to learn about some of the characters there. Big pluck. Six foot eight, a giant of a man, as Big Mitch described him. And somebody, he said, God sent, angels sent. He stopped a lot of stuff.

And my goodness, to hear a poem written about, well, kinship and the kind of kinship That we who call ourselves Christians get that sort of shatter every conventional idea. about who your brother and who your sisters are. When we come back, More of this remarkable story, Sunday Mornings with Big Mitch continues. Here. on our American stories.

Over his many years of reading, learning, and gaining wisdom, Mitch has discovered the profound importance of mindfulness. Mindfulness not only in mind, but in spirit. Let's take a listen. Oh. When you're walking through life, be mindful of what you're reaching for.

'Cause everything you reaching for ain't good for you. And be mindful of what you spend your energy on. Be mindful of who you turn away because the scripture says be careful. who you turn away because you might be entertained with an angel. You never know who God you know, out there in the streets, you know, or even in here, you know, you got guys walking around on the door.

looking for stuff off the ground to smoke. smoke and what have you and And and and guys oftentimes, you know, disregard them. as though they are they are nothing. I don't do that. Uh what I'm gonna do What what what I wrote right here, it said I'm trying to carry the cup.

Or Montair to cup. of compassion and mercy. I got to. And and you know, has and and I will employ anyone to do that in any situation if you can. Be mindful.

Totally. Mindful. or what you do in life and how you treat people. One of the great men and one of the great minds that inspired Mitch throughout his sentence. was none other than doctor Martin Luther King, junior.

Here, Mitt shares a bit of wisdom he learned. by studying Dr. King's earlier work. Marlut Keen. He's a God.

have set up the boundary. For everything. He said now uh when go outside of the boundary of gravity due to the fact that it's a instantaneous punishment for that violation. instantly you understand that lower boundary. But he said God knows loose out of the boundary of morale.

however, says it's not instantaneously. Man has the tendency to go further and further. across the line. of morale and morality. Into He has room for size.

of God, now he's standing in presence of Satan. And I was there that that's when God turned him over to a reprobated mind. And and and I and I I try to tell guys that be be be mindful. You understand when you get on top of that roof, if you fall off of it, you won't do that no more. You won't get closed to that no more.

But when you've done things that you feel there's no punishment for it right now because it it seems right or good. Bye. Color set up a boundaries for that. It's more radical, what's right and what's wrong. It's worth fail.

And i i if you go too far, which man oftentimes do, and you can't come back. Yeah, I just Turn you loose, and when God turns you loose, it's over with. Mitch then decided to recite an original poem. that he titled Fighting Life. It's a story of all the obstacles placed in his path.

Throughout his life, obstacles he had to fight through. or overcome. Let's take a listen. The title of the poem is fighting life. Here you go.

while still in my mother's womb. I was a Texas. Yeah. because of life has attacked my mother are the conditions Life had her condition too.

However, how has life hit me? While I was still in darkness and blind, I fought my way to the light, opened my eyes and let out a big yell to say I am here. They'll protect me through being fawless. with a teenage mother, poverty, a crime-filled environment. I thought through that.

I was not counted out.

Next, it attacked me through. Lack of education, first being ignorant of my inner abilities. Self-love responsibilities to my family and environment, the world outside of my neighborhood. I've fallen through that. I was not counted out.

Next life attacked me through captivity by locking me away from the world I knew and loved. while still in captivity, it attacked Through individuals just like myself, with my background, poverty. fatherless. I fought through that. I was not counted out.

Day and life attacked me for my sanity. Self-respect, integrity. My son. Hole. Faith, love.

I fought harder than ever before. I was still not counted as.

Next life fought me for my life, for my very soul. We fought for years. And just when life had me on my back, shoulders on the mat, it appeared it was all over. Life had won. I came up once again.

on my feet to fight once more. Then when I looked At me with fear and said, I am tired of fighting you. I said, I am not tired of fighting you. Life's response was, What do you want from me? I said the same thing, Jacob, Quoted from the angel of God.

whom he wrestle with todaylight. Life said, What is that? My blessing out of life. Like said, I attacked you. I attacked you before birth and after birth.

And all throughout your life, yet you will not give up and be counted out. You have my blessing. You win. A lesson to all never let life defeat you, regardless of your situation and circumstances. And to close out our conversation on this Sunday, Mitch shared a message to anyone who's fallen on hard times or just needs some words of encouragement.

Your aid is yet key. Tugging on, you can't give up, you know. You gotta keep believing. You gotta keep hope alive. You can't let life.

Fight you for your sanity, for your hope, your love. You got to hold on to it regardless of the situation. And that's what I was saying right there. You know, even though the way I came up, my environment, coming to prison all throughout life, can't give up. And that's why I written that.

But I just wrote there for anybody, especially guys in this situation right here, because they kept talking about dying and whatever is just falling off by the wayside. But you you can't give up on it. And people out there right now, you know, I don't know where they're going through, same way to you. whatever you're going through, if you if you hear that breath there or you hear that, you know, it it if it encourages you here, kind of great please. And like I said, at the end of it you know, by reading and listening.

Listen to all. Never let life defeat you, regardless of your situation and circumstances, you know. We have to keep there in mind. I still see you. regardless of your situation and circumstances.

And uh that's it right there. And a terrific job on the production, editing, and storytelling by our own Greg Hengler. and Reagan Habib. And my goodness, what Mitch had to say about mindfulness. Be mindful of what you're reaching for.

is everything you're reaching for. might not be good for you. and be mindful of how you treat people.

So true. God has set up boundaries, he described. Having learned that from Reverend Martin Luther King, I always want to add it's Reverend, he was a doctor, but he had a doctorate in theology. God has set up boundaries for our own good. It's so important to remember that.

And last he said, don't give up. Fight for your sanity. Fight for your hope. Fight for your love. Sunday Mornings with Big Mitch, Episode 9.
