On this week's Hopecast, David Chadwick and Jenn Houston discuss the upcoming birthday of the nation of Israel and why that nation is so important in biblical prophecy.
Welcome to this week's cast with my friend Jim Houston joins me weekly during this past June. Thank you for your time and your insight. So thank you so much for having me David today. I wanted to note something that might not get noted much throughout the world but is an extremely important anniversary of something that happened 74 years ago on May 14, 1948 Israel became a nation and not only became a nation but became a nation immediately. Suddenly into existence after being the most persecuted nation on the face of the earth not having even been in existence since 70 A.D. when the Romans raised Jerusalem to the ground completely destroyed the temple and exported Jews all over the world and what's called the Dias Barack the dispersion of the Jews for some 1900+ years the nation of Israel did not exist and as people read about biblical prophecies talking about the nation of Israel needing to be in existence before Jesus can come back again. There were all kinds of super spiritual analogies given to explain what those prophecies meant until May 14, 1948 then Israel suddenly came into existence as a nation. I think fulfilling a prophecy in Isaiah 66 verses seven and eight where we read these words before she was in labor she gave birth before her pain came upon her. She delivered a son who has heard such a thing who has seen such things shall all land be borne in one day. Shall a nation be brought forth.
In one moment, for as soon Zion was in labor.
She brought forth her children. That's exactly what happened on May 14, 1948. A nation suddenly unexplainable. He came into existence and Jim what I wanted to do with this hope cast today is to give people some insights into why the nation of Israel is so important. Being in that land for biblical prophecy to occur and ultimately to see the second coming of Jesus. So are you ready to look at some of those things with me. I'm writing will. In Genesis 12 verses one through three. We have the extraordinary call of God to Abram, the father of the Jewish nation and God said, now the Lord said to Abram go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land were I will show you so Abram left of the Chaldees, a very prosperous Mesopotamian city, leaving behind, I think a great family wealth, a name everything and God said, go to this land were all show you where that is.
And Abram didn't even know at that point, so he left with his wife Sarah I and his adopted.
I think son who was really his nephew Lot and they took out from the Chaldees and started heading toward Canaan and that promised land.
You have God continuing with his call to Abram and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and him who dishonors you I will curse. And in you all of the families of the earth will be blessed. Now this is just extraordinary because Abram is married to Sarah I and in chapter 11 verse 30 it's clear she is childless, she is barren and Abram's name means exalted father, so in God's irony and probably in his sense of humor. He names Abram exalted father married to a barren woman and promises him that through his see all of the nations of the earth are going to be blessed in his name will be great, and the nation itself will be blessed and so God leads Abram to Canaan to the promised land, and we see later on.
God says to Abram in chapter 12 to your offspring I will give this land so this land. This promised land. This land belong to God, the holy land was promise to Abraham and his offspring to his see and they need to be in that land to become the Jewish nation through whom Jesus would come into this world. So we believe that Israel being in that land is extremely important even though they were away from the land in a 70 year hiatus because of their irresponsibility and godlessness. The Babylonians came in in 586 BC and took them away for 70 years they were reestablished in that land. After that 70 years of wilderness wandering in Babylon, if you will. And then they lived in that land until Jesus came in himself belong to Virgin Mary the Savior of the world. But Jesus actually wept over Jerusalem in his 33rd year of life because he knew that the Jews were going to reject him and he wept over Jerusalem and said Jerusalem Jerusalem, how often I wanted to gather you under my wings as a mother hen does her brood. But you would not.
He was prophesying about the Roman insurrection against Israel to happen.
Some 30+ years later, and in 70 A.D. that's when Israel was taken captive by room. The walls of the city, the temple itself destroyed and the people dispersed all over the world. Jen from 70 A.D. until 1948 you had this kind. When Israel did not exist. And of course we as Christians say, well, it was important for them to be in that holy land as God promised Abram for Jesus to be born, but then we have the problem of his second coming that he prophesies and says I'm coming back and in accordance with Zechariah 12 he says my feet are going to hit the Mount of olives on Mount Olivet is where my feet will stand in my second coming. And that's where he will establish his second coming.
It's in that land. So, again, for those 1900+ years when people went oh my goodness were Jesus going to come back to because that land is not controlled by the Jews for suddenly in one moment on May 14, 1948 that nation to be born. Suddenly, we have an understanding of biblical prophecy like we've never had it before and it allows us to go to Matthew 24 verse 32 where Jesus gives his mount of olives discourse about his second coming, and he says from the fig tree learn its lesson as soon its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, the things he talked about about wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes of people not loving each other the way they should, etc. the signs off his second coming. When you see those things you know that my second coming is near. At the very gates. Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place in heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. What's fascinating is people look at that idea of the generation will not pass away until all these things take place. What we read about those things again in Matthew 24 that Jim we've actually looked at in previous hope cast but there's one thing that this generation will be able to see that will begin the clock ticking for Jesus return.
What is that one thing that this generation will see it's got to be the formation of the nation of Israel that didn't exist again for 1900+ years that in a moment in a single day. Isaiah 60 678 suddenly exist and now we see that nation beginning will how long is a generation a generation biblically can be anywhere from 70 perhaps to 120 years. Psalm 90 suggest a generation is 70 to 80 years.
Some people think a generation could be the hundred and 20 years that Noah preached to the people warning them about the judgment of the flood.
We don't know exactly.
And I don't want to get near trying to predict the day or the hour but I do want to say this, Israel's formation and its existence, especially against the world's and particularly Arab hostilities that have come against them repeatedly for decades after decades they still exist in that land they have become extremely prosperous, as was prophesied by the prophets in the return off for the aspirate of the dispersion of the Jews from all over the world to Israel. They are the third largest exporter of fruit in the world. They are the fourth largest exporter of flowers in the world. They now have scientists that have learned how to desalinate water. They are the major desalinization of water experts in the world. They now surround the Dead Sea and are now using that salted water in order to be good, pure, clean drinking water. They have all the water they need right now. They have explored and discovered a huge massive gas reserve off the Mediterranean Sea and more over, they have every aspect of their life now covered militarily. They have five major aircraft that can protect them that no other nation surrounding them has. Plus they have a $501 billion GDP you talk about God's promise to Abraham and I will bless you.
He has certainly done so and they also have several aircraft carriers that protect them as well. The point just being that that land does exist and we are now in the week of celebrating May 14, 1948, 74 years later a nation suddenly being born and I think we as God's people who read God's word look at this and go if were looking for the signs of Jesus second coming. We should not exist. This date this week that we look at May 14, 1948 as the formation of this nation of Israel. The blue suddenly now in existence. The only nation in all of human history that existed then didn't exist.
And now suddenly exists again. There's no other nation like that anywhere we can say that I really don't think that we can find on that grandness or the weight of really what all of this means. He said a phrase dated a minute ago about how the clock started taking the clock is ticking and it made me think of you top before in these prophetic positives that has delayed some things from being fulfilled. This wine has gotten back clock ticking again towards his second coming. Someone calls it the kingdom clock and I think that's a great way of looking at it that kingdom clock suddenly took on a new perspective on May 14, 1948 and now we have Israel in existence in this generation. That is a part off Israel's formation can understand that we are getting closer and closer to his second coming. Another interesting aspect of the covenant that God made with a broom gin was the nations that bless you all blessed but nations that curse you all cursed and it's interesting if you look at the history of the world. Any nation that has stood against Israel becomes a lesser nation. Britain is a great example of them.
Another was the phrase in the 1800s that went into the 1900s that the sun never set on British soil. Because Britain had places that they oversaw as a part of the British Empire all over the world and in the early 1900s there was the Balfour declaration led by one Winston Churchill that wanted to find a way to get the Jews back into that land because that land was promised to them to Abram and his offspring and so there was a huge movement, especially among the Brits to get the Jews back into that land and colleges seem to prosper England as it had that mindset. Then suddenly, in the 1940s as the Jews were trying to escape that Nazi persecution and the Holocaust.
They got all boats and actually tried to get to the land. Britain was in control of the Palestinian area and would not let the boats land and the people on those boats, those Jews trying to escape the Holocaust were forced back into their homelands were many of them went to the furnaces in the concentration camps.
What is so fascinating gin is at that moment, post-World War II Britain became an average nation. It went from one of the greatest lender nations of the world to one of the greatest debtor nations in the world and it slowly but surely lost all of those places all over the world where it had influence and slowly but surely they were returned to their own people to be overseen in their own governance written lost its influence in the world. The moment it started to not bless Israel as God said we should do now. I recognize I need to say this, that Israel is largely a secular nation today, for example in Tel Aviv is one of the largest gay pride parades annually that happens there, and Israel has done some terrible things to its neighbors. I have a dear friend who lives in Lebanon and his father was lost to as an Israeli air attack that was unwarranted and unprompted. Some years ago and there've been great enormous amounts of pain inflicted upon people by Israel.
But here's my .02 May 14 happening this week. We need to acknowledge that date.
Why because God wants his people in that land, and they need to be in that land. First of all, for the birth of Jesus 2000 years ago, but they need to be in that land for the second coming of Jesus. They needed to be in that land for his initial first AdVent they need to be in that land for his second upcoming advent the first and second coming.
The Jews have to be in that land so I would just invite all of our listeners today to pause and take a moment to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
Psalm 122. Remember, God owns that land. It's his land. He has his desire for the Jews to be in it and we need to recognize as followers of Jesus. This important event.
And finally, to keep our eyes lifted upward that Jesus could come back any moment we need to be awake. We need to be a holy people. We need to be sharing and giving people. We need to be exercising the spiritual gift that God has given each one of us to be used in ministry and serving other people. We need to be ready if even today. He should come back for if this generation that Jesus talks about in Matthew 24 is our generation.
We should know he could come back any moment at any time and what he wants us to do again is to be a holy, pure, righteous people who give our lives away to care for the needy, the sick, the poor and the oppressed to evangelize the world so that they will know Jesus as well so that when people meet him one day they will be assured of heaven and not eternal separation from him. That's my call today. Be alert. Be ready be awake, look upward, but let Jesus find you giving your life away when he returns one day when I went to great encouragement and challenge for all and I stated I think you I hope this helps and what I want to do next week on the hope cast is look at two major players that are a part of this reestablishment of Israel as well. The first being Russia and what we see happening there, especially with Vladimir Putin and secondly Iran and its continued enmity with Israel. I would suggest that both of those are important players in biblical prophecy as well that will be our next next week I'm leaving chat with Jim Houston. Thank you
