On this episode of Kingdom Pursuits, Darren Kuhn fills in for Robby Dillmore and talks with Pastor Garrett Huxford about the passions God places in our hearts. Garrett shares how his roles as a pastor, stand-up comedian, husband, and father give him opportunities to connect with people and live out his faith in everyday life. They also discuss creativity, authenticity in a social-media-driven world, and an upcoming women's event focused on being authentic rather than comparing ourselves to others. Later, Steve Buffkin shares how Next Steps Church Services helps churches navigate pastoral transitions, rediscover their strengths, and seek God's direction for the future.

This is the Truth Network. Kingdom Pursuits, where you hear from ordinary people instilled with an extraordinary passion. Together we explore the stories of men and women who take what they love and let God turn their passion into kingdom pursuits.

Now, live from the Truth Booth, your host, Robbie Dilmore. Except it's not. Your host is Darren Kuhn today, and I've got a friend in the studio with me, Garrett Huxford, as well. Um yeah, Robbie is down in Atlanta this week doing uh a car show down there where he's kind of the guest of honor and he'll be preaching tomorrow at a church down there. And So he asked me if I would fill in, and I said yes, and I'm sorry.

But so I am thrilled to be here today, though, honestly. One of the reasons I am is. The whole premise of this show, Garrett, is very interesting to begin with because it's everyday people with an extraordinary passion. And I used to be kind of a, you know, dyed in the wool pastor type, you know. I mean, I wore tank tops and flip-flops and things like that and walked around and was the odd preacher.

I'm not that guy anymore, but I still have extraordinary passions about the kingdom. And I know so many people who do, and that's the really cool part about this. And so, um, I would love to hear what you have to say about that. Yeah, I just you know, first of all, I Thanks for having me, and I do love the premise of the show. I was listening, the previous show you did was the Car Guy Show, and I thought that was awesome.

A lady called in. And asked for advice on a car. And I thought, if I was in Darren's seat, I would have no idea what to say to this lady. And it's just like, hey, here's my problem. I imagine they they they uh The mechanics of the shop where they hold the phone to the car and they go, Can you tell what the problem is here?

Been there, too. I'm sure Robbie's had that problem on the radio. For sure. Great radio, by the way. Yeah.

A car revving revving in the engine. I just think it's great because I just, as a pastor, I'm the pastor at Foothills Christian Church here in Winston. I am so proud of the next generation coming up behind us of this sort of we're just going to get out there and live out our Christian faith. And they're just doing so many cool things out there. You know, you're the next generation behind me, right?

Yeah, I know, but I'm now, I feel like I graduated up into the group.

Okay, well, yeah, yeah, I'll invite you on the journey. Yeah, come on up. Yeah, I I see a lot of really cool things happening with You know, the 20-somethings, the 30-somethings now. Yeah. And does that encourage you as a pastor?

Oh, yeah. I think.

So, like, and they're doing just kind of crazy stuff. Like, one of my favorite guys to follow on Instagram is a guy that just carries an American flag and he's just positive. That's the only thing he does. And it's like creating a movement. It's like, let's just be happy.

And people are attracted to it, you know? In Greensboro, they have a group that's a run club, and it's just like a. My way of being evangelistic is going to start a run club and we're going to get a bunch of people together and then we're going to be evangelist. And they're super evangelistic, and I just love it because everything they do is like, we're not going to do all the normal stuff, but in their everyday life, they're just doing just really cool stuff and they're being really fruitful. And I just think it's super cool.

I don't know if I so I met Stu Epperson, who's associated with this radio program. You've told me about him for a long time, and I never met him. He was here earlier, wasn't he? Oh, was he?

So I met him in a Starbucks, and I didn't know who he was. I just saw his t-shirt and I introduced myself. And he's hanging out with this like 22-year-old guy with a guitar in his backpack. And he's like at bus stops, just sharing the gospel with people. And I saw him walk up to the lady doing coffee stuff, and her name was Grace.

And he goes, Oh, you know, there's grace all around you. And she's like, What? He's like, Have you heard of the grace of Jesus? And he just sort of jumped into sort of this evangelistic pitch, and she didn't become, she didn't get baptized right there, but. But she was kind of weirded out by it.

But I just sat there and smiled. I was like, this guy is going to take even the most slim of opportunities. Yes. And he's going to be like, let's give it a shot. Who knows?

And I think. Highlighting that as a radio program is a brilliant idea. I think it's wonderful. Yeah, it's funny, Stu, as we were chatting this morning, he he was talking about a friend of his who just wrote a book. Um kind of Mm-hmm.

is a is more of a quiet Thinking guy, and he said the only problem with him is that he asked the loudest guy that he knows to write the foreword to the book, which was Stu. And I was like, Yeah, but I know you, Stu. I know you know how to take time to be quiet. And so. In your life.

Other than being a pastor of a church, what uh What kind of Funny pursuits are you doing?

So, I do stand-up comedy as well.

So, it's a, I'm kind of on two ends of the spectrum of my day-to-day life.

So, I actually. I've gotten back to where I'm now doing it every Monday night at the Monster Cade, and it's a very different crowd than who I preach to on a Sunday morning. And what's really been. The first thing I learned when I started doing stand-up comedy was when I'd hang out with these people who do comedy. One, it's really cool for me just to get time with people and hang out with them.

But. It's not just that It's not even that they're like anti-Christian.

Some of them are, and some of them are very anti-Christian. But some of them, it's like the church is just off their radar. It's like. It would never come up in a normal day-to-day life thing for them to have any sort of an emotion about it. And so for this For and I think in almost all of our lives, it's probably the same way.

There's people in your neighborhood, there's people at your work, there's that they may not have a positive or negative opinion. It's just off their radar altogether. And kingdom pursuits, just being a Christian in day-to-day life, going out there, I think is a wonderful opportunity for Christians everywhere just to kind of get. Yeah. Get the church on the radar for people again, you know.

Yeah, that's uh you know, I was a pastor for a number of years, and when I left doing that and and Um went more into a a secular life as far as employment goes. Um there there really is no turning Off what God has put in your heart to do. You can try. I mean, you can. I guess you can tamp it down and keep tamping it down again and again and again, but.

I mean, that's how another show that I helped do, The Masculine Journey, came about. God basically said, Darren, all right, yeah, go. grab men who have experienced The wounds you've experienced, the hurt that you've experienced, the divorce, maybe even the church hurt. Addiction to pornography or any number of things. And You know Talk to those guys and love on them and figure out a way to help them overcome that.

And so that literally. That's how the masculine journey started. Is Stu heard me speak someplace and said, Hey, you need to do a radio show. I said, Well, Stu, you have the mics. Great suggestion, Stu.

I think you can also make that a reality.

So anyway, so stand-up comedy. I mean. How hard I I cannot imagine. I mean, yeah, I can be a little comedic hosting a radio show or even preaching, which I do a good bit of. But man, I don't think I could do stand-up comedy.

I'll tell you it When I first did stand-up comedy, I had been preaching. I'd been a youth pastor for five years. I'd been preaching.

So there was a lot of material.

Well, yeah, there was a lot of material, but there's also a lot of stage time. I'd been in front of people, public speaking. And the first time I did. stand up comedy, it was like It was like I had never been in front of a crowd of people before in my life. All the public speaking had just gone out the window, and it's like this other world where I'm going, I'm learning from square one all over again.

And I got done with the first five minutes, and my legs were numb. And I thought, that was, okay, that was crazy. And I got one big laugh the first time I ever did it. And if I didn't get that one big laugh, I probably wouldn't have. Because I left thinking I did pretty good today.

And I still have a recording of it. And there's a lot of just kind of dead air and a lot of bad. And I thought, if I didn't get that one big laugh, I probably never would have tried comedy ever again. But because I got it, I became sort of a sucker for punishment. And.

So obviously God I mean, you know me well enough to know that I I believe God put that desire in your heart. Right. I mean, I also know that God will take the desires that you have that maybe He didn't put there, but that are good. And say, all right, Garrett, let's play, you know? Right.

But why. Why do you think God put that in Garrett's heart? Man, I don't know. I always think of that line from Chariots of Fire where he says, I think God made me fast, and when I run, I can feel his pleasure. Oh, yeah.

Sometimes I feel that with creativity. It's, I think God made me creative, and when I'm being creative, I can feel his pleasure.

Well, we're going to talk about that after we come back from this break. If you have any needs at all, prayer or anything else, you can call 866-34TRUTH. And we will happily hear from you, pray with you. You're listening to The Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Welcome back to Kingdom Pursuits.

Where we talk to ordinary people who have extraordinary passions for the kingdom. And that's the whole point of this: what's good for the kingdom is good for The kingdom and the world. And as a pastor for so many years, um, I have seen a lot of Yeah. Pen guarding. Um and and trying to keep the kingdom out of the pen.

Um, and then I've seen other places where it's all about the kingdom, and so much so that maybe it neglects the pen. Um, but uh. Garrett, I asked you earlier, you know, why you think God put that on your heart to be a Stand-up comedian as well as a pastor, but I want to talk to you about the pastor part of it now beforehand. While you're still thinking about that answer, you know, you get more time. But as a pastor of Foothills Christian Church, There is an event coming up this next Saturday that I would love for you to talk about.

Yeah, so every September we do a women's morning event. It's uh from nine to one. It's and this year we're calling it Authenticity in a Snapshot World. And so my mom, actually, she's been a women's pastor for my entire life. She's awesome at it.

She comes up and puts it on every every year for us. And Sarah Huxford's her name. And so every year she leaves and the women come leave thinking they got a new friend and she's just she's just great as a women's pastor and and they leave with all sorts of dirt about me and and then they they rub it in my face the next day at church. Like, oh, okay, well. And then I bring my mom back for some reason.

I don't know why, but but uh yeah, I the ladies as we were playing about this one is next Saturday, September 19th, uh from nine to one. Um We landed on the idea of authenticity in a snapshot world, which is. I feel like the longer we've had social media, pretty early on in social media, we realized the pictures and the videos we see on the internet are kind of people's highlight reels. And we kind of told ourselves, don't compare yourself to the highlight reel in your everyday life to the highlight reel of everybody else. And the longer we've had social media, you'd think we'd gotten a better skill at that, but we haven't.

No. We still fall into it all the time where we go, man, that person's doing that, and I'm just here, you know? And, and, That's always going to be there. I think as long as the internet as long as anything public is out there. We're gonna have that temptation to judge Our everyday life to their snapshots of their best moments.

You know what I mean? And so. That's one of the things we wanted to kind of shed light on that. And my mom came up with the idea. We're going to look at the five women in the family line of Jesus.

We're going to do Rahab and Ruth and Tamar and Bathsheba and Mary and just talk about these women who had their own situations. They lived in real life. They had real hardships they had to deal with, but they also chose to live in the truth and be true to themselves. And so that's what they're going to be covering this upcoming Saturday. And if ladies want to come to that.

Yeah, go to Foothills Christian Church. It's on the banner up there, a homepage. You click on it. It'll show you how to sign up for it. FoothillsChristian Church.com.

And it's in Louisville, North Carolina.

So if you're within driving distance of the triad, then that's great for you. It's right off 421. We're about a quarter mile off from the roundabout there. You know, what's really cool about this event, I have heard your mom speak before, and I can testify that she's a very gifted speaker. And I don't like the fact that sometimes what she says convicts me.

I mean, I'm just saying. But. But she's an amazing lady, and she's done a pretty good job raising her kids. But anyway, we'll skip past that. One of the things that I think is neat is that it's nine to one.

Yeah. It's not you got to take the whole weekend off, or you know, I mean, there's always a great opportunity for a road trip and going to a really cool weekend retreat and that sort of stuff. Um but this is this is literally four hours on Saturday that you can Drive in. Be blessed, amazingly blessed over that four-hour period, and then leave and go on with your day. I mean, you can still make the baby shower at four o'clock on Saturday.

Yeah, and I come and I'll call her every year with these ideas. She goes, Garrett, and she's just so good at women's ministry. She goes, Garrett, that's just not going to work for moms. You got to choose one or the other, but don't do everything. And I go, Okay, fine.

And so we were like, What about a Friday night worship service and this? She goes, You're not going to get the moms of kids and people. Like, you just got to choose one. And so we've narrowed down and we got some really fun ladies that come up with really fun activities for people to do. And so people love it every single year.

And so I've never been invited personally, but yeah, well, me neither. I've moved the chairs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

So if you're wondering, yeah, Garrett is the pastor of the church where Sheila and I have attended for the last, I don't know, five years or so. But anyway, so. We would we would Thoroughly, um Suggest that you take the opportunity, just four hours of your day, and you're going to be blessed. Dads, take the kids to the park, watch the kids, and send your wife free lunch. It's a free event.

We don't, you know, it's just a great time for you to get connected to people. And the hardest thing about being a Christian in day-to-day life is you often feel alone. And when you get with the church and you realize, oh, there's a lot of other people that they're aiming for the same target you're aiming for. It helps you stay strong and keep moving forward in the truth. Yeah.

And Foothills is one of the most down-to-earth churches that I've ever been a part of. They are sweet people, aren't they? Yeah, yeah. I mean, they're good to you. They're very good to me.

Yeah. But so now I want to ask you. about you know what it If you had to ask Jesus, Jesus, why did you put this in my heart? What do you think he would say? I think Yeah.

You know, I think Jesus would say, Garrett, Mm-hmm. People need some levity in their life. Not everything can be the most serious thing in the world. And And I think God likes it when people laugh. I think he likes it when people have fun.

I think it. He likes it when we don't take ourselves too seriously. And G.K. Chesterton had a funny line where he said, I think the reason angels could fly was 'cause they didn't take themselves too seriously. And It it's just I I I think that there's some things in this world that are easier to to look into when you're not being so serious about everything.

Like I I have a I have a a a bit that I do about The fact that there's all these things my wife would like to talk to me about, but I just can't take it all in. There's too much going on in her head for me to ever be able to parse through. And sometimes it overflows, and then sometimes it's just too much for me to take. And so sometimes I'll be telling this bit. And then one time a guy introduced me at a comedy night, and he goes, and he was newly married at the time.

And he goes, you know, when this next comedian does his set, I learn about marriage and my marriage gets better. I thought, that's a nice introduction, man. Yeah, it is. It is.

So do you try to sneak in?

Some truths? Are you overt? Are you covert? Do you not worry about it at all and just try to be funny? I just try to.

Yeah, I don't really try to sneak in anything Christian, honestly. I just try to be one of the comedians and one of the guys that are out there. But what's interesting is when you are just kind of talking about life, very often people start to realize, you know, that's. That is true. And the the the truth of a better way of living than the Bible would suggest to us.

actually kind of rings a bell once we can stop. Being so combative all the time. Like, I was talking to a comedian the other night who hosts the open mic that I go to. And And uh he's living an alternative lifestyle, I guess you would say. And but he's talked to me, goes, you know, I kinda think it's cool that when you tell your jokes, it still sounds like you like your wife.

Yeah. And I go, yeah. Because he goes, I don't. I don't like it when it's like you hear the jokes people tell about their spouses, and then you go, So are you like breaking up? He's like, No, no, I love her.

Would never leave. He's like, Well, it doesn't sound like it. Yeah. Man, how true is that? And I can testify to the fact that you do like your wife.

I mean, I like your wife a lot. Yeah. Probably more than I like you. Yeah. But, you know, just between friends.

Right. I love your kids, that's for sure. And how cool is it that they get to grow up with a dad that's a stand-up comedian and a pastor of not just other people's hearts, but theirs. Yeah. So how do you how do you weave that into your Parenting.

Well, I um I try to be open with everything I do about how I think the personal pursuits we go on are important. And it's kind of cool where I get done with work on a Monday and I eat dinner with my family and then I leave dinner and say, hey guys, I'm going to go to comedy. And they all go, break your leg. My son, Kenny, always says, break your leg off, dad. And it's just kind of cool where they just kind of know that my dad does things, you know what I mean?

And their mom is always doing her projects and things like that. And we encourage them.

So, like at Christmas Eve in my family, the tradition was always, you get one gift as a gift of love. And the one this year was I gave them all a journal. Uh they could they could color in or write in or whatever, 'cause I'm g they're in that sort of My youngest is just with just color in it. My oldest can start to write and it's starting to do cool things with creativity at this point. And I just wanted them to know.

I said, listen, all the thoughts you have are worth writing down. All of them are worthwhile. And I hope you know. This journal helps you remember that everything you feel like you need to ask or write or say is worth putting on paper and worth sharing with somebody.

So the comedy is really more of a. Creativity thing. I mean, that's the theme I keep hearing: that creativity is the gift. Comedy is kind of the way that it gets expressed. Yeah, yeah.

And it's And it helps you kind of in in in creativity helps you kind of think through. wife you know what i mean i I remember reading a book one time where a guy was talking about a new when Pinterest was new at the time, which is, I don't even know if anyone uses Pinterest anymore. But a lot of therapists would, if they had more creative-minded people, instead of just asking them to talk about what their feelings are, they're like, put a Pinterest board together, put some pictures up. And all sorts of like you start seeing these pictures and these themes emerge out of just sort of this collage they put together, you know? And I think.

I think creativity is a worthwhile thing. I think Jesus was a very creative person. You know, he. His parables were art. They were every bit the storytelling effort that you'd get out of a novelist, and sometimes better because he was quicker at it.

So, ladies, if you would like to hear more about Authenticity in a snapshot world. Thank you, Garrett, because I was going to stubble over that. Please go to foothillschristian.com. and the foothillschristian church dot com in Louisville. You can look them up.

It's easy. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Welcome back to Kingdom Pursuits. Where we talk about things that everyday people are doing to bless the kingdom. because of extraordinary passions that they've put on their heart.

Um One of those is uh the passion to teach people. One of those is the passion maybe to to make people laugh or or maybe to to do a radio show about cars or or any number of things. Honestly, the the reason this show is what it is is because God put a passion on Robbie's heart so many years ago um to do radio and and that developed into Um what you're experiencing right now as uh kingdom pursuits and so we're thrilled that you are with us And I have Garrett Huxford in the studio with me. We've been talking about comedy and women's ministry, which I think are. It's a non-trivial thing.

Yeah. It is if men are trying to do it, that's for sure.

So, anyway, and now we have Steve Bufkin on the line with us from. New York. And Steve, I am so glad that we got you on. We were having a little bit of a difficulty there for a minute, but so glad that you're on. And Steve, Has also been a pastor in the past, and then he retired, and then he never really quit.

And now he's basically in full-time pastoring in transitional churches. And that's one reason I wanted to have him on: to talk about what he's doing, but also the organization that he's a part of and what they're doing in the kingdom. Hey, Darren, thank you, man. It is so good to be on. Can I give a shout out to the lady, the last lady you talked to on the car?

Yeah. What an amazing, amazing testimony. Whoa, wow. You've rocked to me. Yeah.

And hey, Garrett, man. It's so good to. To hear you, and I'm excited that you got your comedy career back up. And uh excited about what what's going on at uh Foothills. Yeah, thank you.

That that is so close. Good to hear you. And what a great interview you gave.

So thank you guys.

Well, Steve, tell us about what you're doing right now and who you're doing it with. I am actually serving in what's called a tips. role which is a temporary interim pastoral role. I work with an organization called Next Steps. Church services.

I think I'll give you a little bit of history about them, and it may help. Yeah. About twenty, twenty-two years ago, uh a couple of guys were sitting around and they were kind of lamenting. Uh how many young pastors were just kind of being destroyed. by well-meaning churches.

They came in with great visions and great plans. and churches just weren't prepared for them. They kind of had a pioneering spirit and churches had a managerial And as a result of that, these guys said, what can we do? They had been actively involved in church planning. uh vetting people who are going to be moving into that arena.

And they said, why don't we think about that? as a way of trying to help churches. And and they came up with a a a very Um organized plan. to assist churches that are either going through pastoral transition or vision transition. And they spent two years interviewing, working, collecting data.

And they finally determined that the best thing that they could do is to help churches understand That before they would hire a replacement for a long-term pastor. Or Uh if the church had suffered some kind of um moral failure or or just somebody had left. to go on to another ministry. that the best thing that they could do was pause. to take a hard look at who they were what they were doing and why they were doing it.

So they developed a very extensive assessment And it's not a consultation. It's actually an assessment that the church members themselves and leadership do that kind of make the suggestions of what they would like to do, what they're doing well, what they think they're doing well, what they think they're not doing well. And coupling that with what the real needs are within a community. And then going into And it's very Uh kind of energized spiritual renewal time. of spending time before God and with God.

preparing hearts and preparing minds to move in the direction that God would have them move. Um then An assessment team is formed after the assessment report is given, this very detailed report that comes from within the church. And out of that. Tips Pastor develops an assessment team. and the church itself.

decides what they are going to implement the when and the how. And they are then encouraged Uh equipped. and um held into an accountability Kind of Um systems so that they can actually accomplish And all along that Developing ways of encouraging and celebrating. uh the victories rather than looking at things that Haven't worked well. celebrating those things that are.

Fine.

So you were up in Minnesota for, um, I don't know, it seemed like a year and a half to me as your friend who wasn't hanging out with you anymore. Um but um up there you guys actually helped a couple of churches merge together, didn't you? Yeah, we did something up there that was just absolutely unbelievable. Uh and and it was totally orchestrated by God. Uh the church that I I went to serve up there, they had had uh a serious, serious problem.

Um that it called caused Um significant division. Um they had a an an amazing staff. They had amazing elders. but they weren't necessarily on the same page. And as a result, what had transpired, the church had reduced in size significantly.

They had a large budget. Um that they weren't being uh able to sustain Um and and so when I got there, there was just such a sense of lament Uh and pain And one of the very first things was trying to help them. to to find joy again. In serving and the identity that they had. um through Jesus and and in the community.

And we began the process, and I went to just a prayer meeting of pastors. met a young man who was getting ready to plant a church. He was going to plant right in the backyard of our church. I knew what the consequences of that might be.

So we just began a friendship kind of conversation that ultimately led to, hey, what would happen? Yeah. We got together. instead of competing let's combine the assets and resources of what God has provided. And see what that looked like.

Elders, staff of the church that I was called to serve. We're just totally committed to it. uh church itself almost one hundred percent. uh voted in favor And we weren't the lead church. We became the joining church in the language of.

Of church mergers. And this coming Sunday, tomorrow. Um they are actually having Their launch. They've been almost a month and a half in preparation. They anticipate about seven to eight hundred people.

That will be present. Wow. Multiple services. That is so cool. And when we come back from the break, I've got a couple of questions I want to ask.

um about that but Right now, if you are at a church that may need some transitional help, then hang on. Steve's going to talk a little bit more about that and how maybe you could get someone like him or maybe him himself. to come and help you with that. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Welcome back to Kingdom for Suits.

Robbie is not with us today. He's down in Atlanta doing a car show and some ministry stuff down there, and evidently eating some really good barbecue as well. But I've got Garrett Huxford in the studio with me, and I've got another good friend, Steve Bufkin, on the line. And Steve, you were talking about, you know, in Minnesota, you went up there. to kind of serve as an interim pastor to to help a church through a transition that had had some woundings, maybe self-inflicted woundings, but still woundings.

And maybe they weren't self-inflicted if you actually consider The enemy that we have being involved in those processes.

However, what I heard you say, and you didn't say it, but this is what I heard, okay, is you went there. but not with a one hundred percent prescriptive outcome in mind. And maybe you did, maybe the Holy Spirit changed that. I don't know. But that's kind of the question.

Is that the way that you guys typically do this is is just go in. I mean, I know you got the assessments, but after going in and and seeing things, uh, it seems like things took a a a really different sort of turn. And I would guess that that was because you guys were listening to the Holy Spirit. Yeah. Um We have a process.

Um But that process has to allow and and does allow um for a a deep listening uh to what what what God is calling a church into. And sometimes there and that means that Um impairing Um you know, we all sometimes want to do more. And we actually wind up doing less. And So one of the things that we try to help churches recognize, what are you doing well? And emphasize that.

and stay focused. in that area. I'll be honest with you, one of the things that we discover more often than not Yeah. Many, many churches are not having organic growth. Um what they're having.

is uh people that become dissatisfied. uh change churches Um They um perhaps every once in a while, new people move in Most of the baptisms that we're seeing in some of the churches that we're serving. Our our families. Their children are coming to that age where they're saying yes to the Lordship of Jesus. But that kind of external Um well Call.
