The true shepherd saves his sheep by giving them eternal life and providing a path to salvation through Jesus Christ. The good shepherd sacrifices for his sheep, stays with them, sympathizes with them, studies them, and secures them. True sheep believe the shepherd, hear the shepherd, follow the shepherd, have eternal life, and can never be taken from the shepherd. They understand that their life is eternal and that they should think more about eternity than the here and now.
