Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the Word of God to be spread throughout the world so that all may know Christ. Join us now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church, located in Kernersville, North Carolina. And let's look at Psalm 62. We talked about Psalm 61.
Let me give you a little bit of historical context, if I can. What we believe is that Psalm 62. Not only was it written by David, But what was going on in David's life at the time of we believe him writing this is interesting. David is king, and you obviously know that when you're a king, Um When you're on the throne, when you're kind of at the top, People are going to always shoot at you. You know, it's that way at Walmart, it's that way at McDonald's, it's that way.
Many of you, obviously, you're going to head out tomorrow, go right back to your job, it's that way at your job. You get a position in leadership, everybody that's not in that leadership is going to have something to say and criticize until they get in that position of leadership and then they realize what it's like. And it's just our human nature. But what you don't expect sometimes is that your family. is the ones that are going to come at you.
And even specifically, you're not really expecting sometimes your own son. would be the one that would rally people against you.
Well, we all know what happened with Absalom.
Now I would say this, Absalom If he was here. Um And we gave him the pulpit for a little while. He might be able to lay out a case for you. Why he might have had pretty good reason to be mad at dad.
So we're not going to pretend that that's not the case. But just because you have good reason to feel something doesn't mean it's right to act upon it.
Well, thank you. I appreciate that one. Let me say that again. Just because you might have good reason to feel something doesn't mean you're right to act on it. And we, as God's people in God's house, you know what can ruin a good church?
Is when we start acting out on every feeling we have. And I'm going to tell you that, you know. I'm just glad I don't.
Okay, and so you put me on interstate 40. If I acted on every feeling. That I have. Just coming here through Colfax, if I reacted on every feeling that I have and But what was going on, Absalom was mad at dad and Um Like I said, might have had some good reason for things, but what he decided to do, Absalom would stand outside the gate and Anybody that was upset at something, Absalom would kind of move in. Become the good guy, and he'd say something like this: You know, if I was king, I wouldn't have done it that way.
I know dad did that, but I got to be honest with you, you're right, that wasn't fair. And if I was king, you know, and he began to rally the hearts of the people and different things. And so Psalm 62 is a psalm that was written by David when he was really being criticized, and not just being criticized, but when he was specifically being criticized by those closest to him. And as the people of God, children of Israel, this psalm was later used. And you know, many of the psalms is a songbook, and they would sing these things.
These are songs that would be sung when there was heavy criticism going on. Look at verse 1. I'm going to go ahead and read the whole thing. We're going to jump into it. Again, we're going to be very respectful of your time.
tonight. To the chief musician, to Jenathan Asam. David.
So we know that this was given to be put to music, okay? Truly My soul waiteth upon God. From him cometh my salvation. Here's our theme, he only. is my rock and my salvation.
He is my defense. I shall not be.
Now notice verse 2. I shall not be.
Greatly moved. Verse 3, how long will ye imagine mischief against a man? Ye shall be slain, all of you. As a bowing wall shall ye be. and as a tottering fence.
They only consult to cast him down from his excellency. People are good at that, by the way. They work so hard. to bring somebody down. If they would just work that hard to do something productive, they might end up in the leadership.
But they work so hard to bring someone down. He says, they delight in lies, they bless with their mouth. But they curse inwardly. Sila. Every one of you thought of some things in your life right there, didn't you?
Look at verse 5. My soul wait thou only upon God. For my expectation is from him. Verse 6: He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense.
I shall. Not be moved. You see the difference? Verse 2, he says, I shall not. be greatly moved.
And then in verse 6, he says, I'm not going to be moved at all. Look at verse 7. In God is my salvation and my glory, the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in God. Have you not noticed that there are themes going through this chapter of repeat? There is double emphasis all through this chapter.
And it's literally written as a song. There would be choruses when you see that same verse written out. In other words, there would be verses in between, and we come back to the chorus. And what is the chorus? Is that obviously, he is my rock and my salvation, he is my defense.
I shall not be moved.
Now look, if you would, at verse 8, trust in him at all times, ye people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Sila. Surely men of low degree are vanity and men of high degree are a lie.
Now that covers it all, doesn't it? Men of low degree are vanity, men of high degree are a lie. To be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery. If riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
Wow. Let's just stop right there. If God, for some reason, is good enough to you in your life. where riches increase. Don't you dare make the mistake.
of setting your heart on that. You say, well, I wouldn't dare. Listen. Until we're there, we don't know what we would do. Verse 11: God hath spoken once.
Here we go, twice. Have I heard this that power? belongeth unto God. Also, unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy, for thou renderest to every man according to his work. Let's pray.
Lord, I love you. Thank you for all that you've done. Lord, as we talk about you only. Pray that you would bless us tonight. And Lord, even more fitting, maybe there's some here that's going through some criticism.
Maybe at work, maybe at home. Um feel it, they sense it, they hear it. And so, Lord, I just pray as we look into the truths of your word, apply it where necessary. In the hearts of our people here tonight. In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Now, David's being criticized. And so he begins immediately in verse 1, and he is explaining how we should handle criticism, how we should perceive it, what our perspective should be of it.
So let's notice number one, he deals with the reliance of the saved. What is it that saved people should rely on? First off, don't rely on the comments from people. What David is saying already is: like, if I rely on what people say about me, I'm in trouble. Because he's being criticized.
And if you rely on people praising you, guess what? Then you're going to tend to start relying on that. And then when they start criticizing you, you're in trouble.
So David here makes it clear, we as saved people. What is it that we should rely on?
Okay, so notice first, he's talking about those who are saved. Notice first, he talks about his position.
Now, look at verse 1. A Psalm of David, truly, what is our position as saved children of God? Notice, truly, my soul waiteth upon God.
Now look at verse 5. He repeats it again. My soul, wait thou only upon God. He makes it clear now, he jumps through this passage. He goes back and forth, but he covers these different subjects.
First thing is, what are we to rely on? And notice here, he says first that our reliance should be waiting upon God.
So that is where I should rely. My position is, as a child of God, to wait on him. Everybody got it? Your position is not to make something happen. My position is not to manipulate it and try to change the outcome.
My job, my position, my place as a Christian is to wait upon God. Then he repeats it, wait thou only. Upon God.
Now, I notice a couple things here.
Now, waiting upon God means literally resting and relying with quiet confidence. It means I rest in him, I rely upon him while I'm waiting on him, and I do it with quiet. confidence. It means that while I'm waiting, I have confidence. that God is in control of this.
Now, let me give you this application to this verse. A restless soul. reveals Misplaced. Trust. Let me say it again real slow.
A restless soul. If you have a restless soul, That is revealing misplaced trust. The only way that you and I as God's children become restless Worried. Troubled is when we have put our trust in the wrong source. When our trust is in God, guess what?
He doesn't change. Yeah, everybody get where I'm going. I'm not saying I'm good at it. I'm not saying I've arrived there. I'm just saying that when you and I get restless in our spirit, it's usually a sign that we have begun to misplace our trust.
We're kind of depending on a person or a thing or a circumstance or our own ability or whatever the case might be. And when we do that, when we misplace that before long, we're going to end up very restless.
Okay?
So our position is to wait upon God. Notice second, he says his protection, which is his confidence here. Look at verse 2 and verse 6. He only. Is my rock and my salvation.
He is my defense. So, my protection doesn't come from what people think about me. My protection comes from the fact that God, who I trust, is my rock. My salvation, my defense. And then look at verse 6.
He only is my rock. And my salvation, he is my defense. Twice. Emphasis here.
So, what does this mean? Rock is stability, salvation is deliverance, defense is fortress.
So, he says this: that God is the one that keeps me stable, God is the one that delivers me, God is my fortress, not anything else. He Only say it with me tonight. Do I sound like Pat Weimer when I do that? Where's Vicki at? Where's Vicky?
Is that what Pat does? He'll say, now say. Repeat it so they can hear it. Is that right? Yeah, yeah.
Since he messed up my ear thing, I'm going to make fun of Pat is what I'm going to do. No, I like why does Pat do that? Because you got to pay attention. Because you can drift off. He Only.
Now listen. If you don't listen to anything else I say, Which might be the case for some, I hope not. But I want you to get is this. You ought to walk away from here. Knowing and thinking this, he only.
Whatever it is. He Only.
What do I depend on? He only. Who do I trust? He only. Who can take care of this?
He only. Who should I go to for help? He only. Quit going to that phone. Go to the word.
Okay.
So, the reliance of the saved. What do we depend on? First, his position, second, his protection. Let me just show you this as we look at verse 2 and verse 6. He only is my rock and my salvation.
Notice first, and this is not on the screen, I just want to give this to you extra, our confidence is exclusive. He only. My confidence cannot be in anyone or anything else. If it is, I got a problem. I'm double-minded.
So, my confidence is exclusive. He only. Notice, second, my confidence is stable. He's my rock. Why is my confidence only in Him?
Because He's the only thing that's stable, He is the only thing that doesn't change. Notice third: my confidence is secure, He's my salvation. He's my salvation. And let me tell you, listen, I love this, and let me just say: salvation is not found in self-effort, but in God alone. And here in the Old Testament, we find out here that salvation can never come by anything in your effort.
It's he Only. is my salvation, not he and you. Not he and all those good things you've done. Not he and you went to an altar years ago. Not he and you got baptized.
He only is my salvation. Here's a New Testament principle in Old Testament context, okay? It's always him only. Notice Here from number four, our confidence is safe. He said, he's my defense.
Fortress, stronghold, as we talked about this morning, high temperature. God surrounds and protects his children. And let's notice number three now: his persuasion, okay? His position, wait on God. All right?
Wait on God. That's my position as a saved individual. His protection, his confidence, he only. Notice thirdly, his persuasion. And this is what I pointed out to you as we read.
Look at verse 2. I shall not be greatly moved. And the more he talks about Christ, the more he talks about what God has done in his life, and you and I now have God in us, the hope of glory. Notice the verse 6: I shall not be moved. You know, in verse 2, it's, I'm not going to be moved a lot.
But by verse six, notice how his faith grows. I'm not going to be moved at all. And let me just say, it might be just even tonight, some of you where we are in our faith journey right now, we're a little bit weak, we're a little bit worn down. And maybe it's right now as like I'm not going to be moved much. And what we want to do is get faith to where it needs to be in our life.
I'm not going to be moved at all. It's him only. Notice this: He only is my rock, I shall not be moved. The more you lean on God, the firmer your faith becomes. That's just the way it goes.
Now, let's notice number two.
So, we have first the reliance of the saved.
So, what is David saying? I'm getting criticized here, I can't rely on that. I can't rely on people's opinions. I can't rely on what people say. I can't rely on others.
I have to rely on something way above them.
Okay, notice second we see the retaliation of the sinners. And now we deal with the criticism thing a little bit.
So, what David says is before he even talks about how he's hurting because he's being criticized, he reminds himself and us, because they're getting ready to sing. He reminds us first that I'm supposed to rely on God, I am going to wait on him, he only is my salvation, he only is my rock, he only is my defense.
Okay, but now he digs into it personally. Look at verse 3. Notice first, the retaliation of the sinners.
So these are people coming at us. Notice, number one, their schemes. He says, How long, verse 3, will ye imagine mischief against a man? How long are you going to do this? And can I tell you they can do it a long time?
It's amazing how people have resilience. doing something like this. You know, you can do what you want to do. Listen, I can go play golf for four hours or whatever the case might be and And I can, man, I can go out and work in the yard, and I enjoy doing that. And I can go out and I can dig, or I can go out and do whatever, and I can go out and work.
And you can spend hours, and I can go out and play pickleball. I love to go out and play pickleball a couple hours. But man, I show up with my wife in a mall, my back starts hurting in 20 minutes. Come on, guys, is it not true? You're walking around like, man, where's that bench?
You know, that bench that your dad always sat on, like my dad always sat on. You know, my dad made a progression. I remember when I was little, he'd walk around the mall with my mom. Then my dad started sitting in the bench. Then my dad just stayed in the car.
And as a kid, I would just sit in the car and he would make fun of everybody that walked in and out of that mall. What did he say? I really can't tell you what he said, but it was hilarious, okay? We can talk privately, and I'll tell you some of the things he said. As a kid, why would I want to go in there?
I'm going to lay out here and get entertained by dad. But anyway. We do what we want to do. Notice what he says, they're schemes. Ye shall be slain.
All of you. You've spent so much time trying to slay others with your words. This is what's going to happen. Do you look at verse 4? They only consult to cast him down from his excellency.
They delight in lies, they bless with their mouth, they curse, but they curse inwardly.
So notice. Plotting mischief, he says, scheme number one, notice scheme number two, they delight in lies.
So they plot how they can cause mischief, then they use dishonesty. He says they delight in it. Notice third, they speak blessings outwardly. But they're cursing inwardly.
So what do we have here? Jealousy? Dishonesty. and hypocrisy. He gives these schemes.
Jealousy, they consult to bring him down. from His Excellency. I want you all to understand I I can preach in church all about it, but you're the one that has to go work at a job every day. And I know some of you, you've been treated really bad at jobs. And you've been overlooked.
And you haven't been treated fairly. And I listen, it's a real thing of life. But I want you to know a lot of times there's jealousy involved. Why are they trying so hard to bring me down? Because they're mad they're not in that position.
But can I tell you something? It goes on in church circles as much as it goes on in jobs, it goes on in preachers. I'm telling you, I've never seen the likes of it. I'm going to tell you, especially in 2025, we have preachers doing everything they can do through online social media to bring down any other preacher they can. I've never seen the likes of it.
It is discouraging. Notice this: jealousy, dishonesty. They delight in lies. Notice hypocrisy. Oh they They talk one way.
But inside is a different story. And can I say something? Jealousy, dishonesty, and hypocrisy is a really bad combo. And then sometimes it's all three. That is a really Bad.
combo their schemes. Notice secondly their frailty. Verse three, he says, How long will ye imagine mischief against? A man. How long are you going to go about this?
Eventually, Their attacks are going to end. How long? But eventually, notice what he says here. Ye shall be slain, all of you. So their end.
is coming. And if I can be a little bit of An encouragement to you tonight: if you're dealing with some unfair criticism in your life from some sources. Their time is limited. If it's not true and if it's false, their time is limited.
Now, I know it's going to feel to you like, it seems like they get away with it and get away with it and get away with it, and nothing's being done, nothing's going to be done. But I'm just telling you what the Bible says. David says, ye shall be slain. All of you. And notice this, and this is how he describes it: as a Boeing Wall Shall ye be?
And as a tottering Fence.
So he's saying, you're like a wall that is bowed. And you know what happens a lot of times? Let's just think about this. Everybody, look at me. Let's think logically.
You got to think logically when you look at the Word of God. You got to think with faith, but man, sometimes God just puts stuff very plain, but you got to think about it.
So, why does a wall eventually begin to bow? Because there's a problem with uh Foundation. And why does a person end up like this? Because there's a problem. Because why are they just critical of everybody and every?
Because there's a problem with the foundation. And here's what David said: It's like a wall that's bowed, and guess what? Eventually. It might be standing right now. But the time's going to come.
it's going to fall. Notice what he says here, a tottering fence. That's a rickety fence. It's a fence that's kind of... Halfway leaning, and you know what?
I have found a fence like that: the smallest pressure that shows up, it'll fall. And David here is saying, listen, yes, they have their schemes, but they are frail. There is an end. There is a limit. To some of this.
Now, you might not see it. Right now, the wall might still be bowed, and right now, the fence is still up, although it's tottering. But David is saying this: if you're on the right side of the truth here. Time is going to tell. Notice thirdly their vanity.
Look at verse 9. He says, Surely men of low degree are vanity, men of high degree are a lie. To be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. Look at verse 10: Trust not in oppression. Become not vain in robbery.
If riches increase, set not your heart upon them. So, notice, men of low degree. are vanity, men of high degree, is a lie. You know, whether through robbery, oppression, riches, what is he saying here? All reliance on human beings.
is empty. Men of low degree, men of high degree, nothing is what it looks like. And when you start putting your trust in people. Guess what? You are in for it.
You are going to be disappointed. And here's the whole thing. Listen, people should have never put their trust in David, he had his faults. But David's telling himself, I can't put my trust in those people. I can't worry about what they say and I can't worry about this and that.
I mean, men of low degree or vanity, men of high degree or a lie, it doesn't matter. Nothing is like it seems. Don't put your faith in men's schemes or men's status, he's saying here. Don't judge because this man is a high degree, or don't judge this man because he's of low degree. None of us can judge correctly.
Which brings up number three, the refuge of the sovereign.
So, David starts off and he says, This is what you need to rely on as a Christian, and this is how sinners are going to retaliate, okay? But notice. Thirdly, he brings up the subject in verse, beginning in verse 11, the refuge. of the sovereign. He says, this is how God ministers to you.
In your life, especially when you're facing stuff like this. Look at verse 11. First, we see his strength. God has spoken once, twice have I heard this.
Well, if it's twice, we better listen. God said it once, that's enough, correct? But when God says it twice, you better drop everything. And he says, this is what God has said. that power.
belongeth unto God. God said. Power belongs to me.
So that means this: true authority is not with kings, not with wealth, not with oppressors. Not David. Not even David's enemies. What is David saying here? I've got the power.
I'm the king. They don't. No, no, no, no. David didn't even have the power. What David is acknowledging here, God said it, and God said it twice.
Power belongs to God.
Now, listen to this. He doesn't just say that God has power. He said, God, what? owns power. Did you read the verse?
Amen.
Power belongeth. Unto God. You with me? Say amen.
So, this isn't just the oh, God has power. No, God owns power, which means. You or anyone is only going to have as much power as God allows them to have. Because he owns it.
Somebody's coming against you, guess what? They're only going to have as much power as God allows them to have. Because God owns power. And guess what that means? You're only going to have as much power as God allows you to have.
That's why you don't rely on you. That's why, listen, please get this. It also means there's only one way for you to get that kind of power, and that's through God. You can't get it anywhere else through your education. Listen, it's only through God.
God owns power.
So that means this. Nobody can have. Any more than he allows. It means this: that the only way you're ever going to get it is if you get it through him. Guess what this means, thirdly?
How many of you have heard Preachers say, and I might have over the years, I don't know. It's wrong, so I doubt that I said it, but I might have said it at some point, I don't know. You know the verse where it says, God will never put more on us than we can bear. Y'all with that? And preachers who get up and say, Let me tell you something, God will never put on you more than you can bear.
That's a lie. Every day I get more on me than I can bear. What that verse is teaching. is that you'll never have more on you than God can bear. Yeah, yes.
He's the one that carries it, not you. You'll always have more than you can bear.
Okay, listen, it doesn't take months for things to build up, and all of a sudden Daniel Hawtry can't bear it. In an hour, I'm out. But what this verse is saying, listen, God owns power. And that's what we're saying. God will never give somebody so much power that they can have more power over you and God.
God will never allow a trial, a burden, a difficulty, anything that cannot be handled through your reliance upon God. I hope you understand what Scripture is really teaching there. His strength, notice, second, his shelter. Look at verse 8. Trust in him at all times, ye people.
Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge. That word is literally shelter. And then he says, seal us. Let's stop and think about this.
So let's look at first. First, he says, trust in him. Trust in him.
Okay.
Look at me. If it's hailing outside, don't get excited, Nick. if it is beginning to hail outside. That was hilarious. I just made myself laugh.
Most of you don't have any idea what we're talking about, but if you ever are in the middle of a hailstorm, call Nick. He'll help you, okay? But if it's hailing outside, and here's a shelter right here.
Now look at me. Is that shelter going to help me at all? Unless I go under it. Yeah, you're right.
Okay.
So a shelter can help me, but it's not going to help me until I go under it. And I'm not going to go under it until I think I can trust it. Everybody got it? So what is he saying? Trust in him.
He's your shelter, but he's not going to do you any good unless you trust him enough to put yourself under him.
Okay, so trust in him, notice secondly, at all times. Not trust in him when it makes sense. Or trust in him when I understand, or trust in him when, man, this, you know, I see how, no, no, no, no, no. Trust in him at all times, even when your son. is unfairly Rising up a kingdom against you.
I in the middle of that have to somehow trust him. Notice Trust in him. At all times And when we trust in him at all times, what's going to happen? You're going to pour your heart out before him.
