Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the Word of God to be spread throughout the world.
so that all may know Christ. Join us now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church. Located in Kernersville, North Carolina. Appreciate the song tonight, whereas Jesus... Because this is, um, that literally is describing.
repentance. Repentance is realizing that you are no longer close to Jesus. And may I remind you that Jesus is not the one that moved. You and I are the one that moved. If there is now a distance between you and the Savior, He didn't leave you.
We left him. Yeah. The Bible says he's an ever-present help. in time of danger, but You and I often get enamored, distracted, Our attention gets drawn elsewhere. We um get busy.
We get distracted, we get... I'm drawn away by so many things. Sin separates The Bible says, and we allow sin into our life, and it brings separation. We are still saved. If you've been saved, we're still saved.
But as the song said, that there is now Although my relationship is secure, The fellowship is Not there anymore. And all of a sudden we can turn around and we can say, where's Jesus? Where did he go? And he hasn't gone anywhere. We're the ones that have drifted away.
So We always, when we talk about repentance, We just have to go to Psalm 51. I know you know that's where we're going, and everybody could see that coming, but. Yet I want us to think about this that Repentance, I believe, is more than a one-time Um thirty second deal. I believe repentance is A process. I believe that there is Forgiveness immediate.
Do you believe that? Do you believe that God forgives us immediately? Aren't you glad we have a Savior that forgives us immediately? But I believe that when we talk about repentance and restoration, I believe it's a process. And um I want us to look at this chapter and I want it to teach us.
This is called David's Prayer of Repentance, but I want to look at some principles of his prayer. prayer. And I want us to look at how we can Pray the prayer of repentance.
Now repentance doesn't come just because we pray certain things. This prayer should reflect our heart. Just because we pray words doesn't mean we're repentant. It means that our heart must be repentant and But this These words reflect how our heart should feel. what our hearts should say uh to God at a time like this.
If um you find yourself at a place deep down between you and God. That there are some things you need to repent of, that you have found yourself at a point in your life. Where you need repentance. Then I think this will help you tonight.
Now, the other things we've given The resources we've given: it's hey, how to pray for this person, that person, how to pray for your husband, for your wife. It's exciting. Hey, this will really help me. But this one tonight's a little bit serious. And we're going to go through it briefly.
Not going to take long. But I want us to Take it very serious because Um All of us should be repenting. faithfully and regularly in our life. If you have not repented lately, you've got a problem. Yeah, that's right.
Why do I feel like I'm getting resistance here? Can we all agree with that? Don't we sin every day?
So repentance should be a regular thing in our life. But I believe that there should be an attitude of the heart and we should really look inside. There ought to be a great self-examination. as there was with David here. When it comes to repentance, let's pray, ask God to bless us as we look at His Word.
Lord, we love you, need your help tonight. Keep my. Throat, Lord, as strong as we can. And thank you for the patience of our people. In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen. Number one. According to verse 1, And your Bible, many of you, your Bible, of course, mind us too. It'll give a little bit of explanation in verse 1 that. Here is David in his prayer of repentance after His sin was.
with Bathsheba.
Now, we all know what that was, and not all of us may know, but most of us here would understand what that was. It was an adulterous relationship, and I'm not going to get into all the details of that. With our young people and things of you know, they would understand, and we could certainly do that without being graphic in any way, but we understand. That The only thing that David needed to repent that David repented of It wasn't just a sin with Bathsheba. It's not like David was great on all levels, but you know what?
He did this one thing with Bathsheba.
So I need to repent of that, and then I'm fine. The sin with Bathsheba was a result of a number of things. that had gradually built up. And his sin with Bathsheba was the least. of some of his problems.
How about murder?
So David finds himself here in a situation. He can't believe what he's done. You just can't believe it. He is so Ashamed of himself, disappointed. How in the world did I get here?
There might be some in this building, if you were honest. You know, and I believe there are certain things that In a person's life, we don't just go run our mouth about it. I've always heard private sin, private confession, public sin, public confession. I don't know. I would apply that just across the board.
I have shared the verse many times. It's a shame to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But there are some that have besetting sins. That sin keeps popping up in your life, and it just, when it happens, you just. You're almost disgusted with yourself how Do I keep ending up here?
And this is David here. How am I here? How have I done this? I am king. Notice the first thing we find in the prayer of repentance, according to verse one, is.
Lord. Thank you for your mercy. If you're beginning this step of repentance in your life, I want to encourage you first and foremost. To pray and thank God for His mercy. You say, Preacher, what do you mean?
Look at verse 1. David says, have mercy on me, O God. According to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, the multitude of thy tender mercies. Listen to me. If you have a repentant heart, And you are now praying.
Asking God to forgive you of that sin. The fact that you are even there, the fact that you're even repentant, the fact that you even have the chance to pray to him means he has been merciful to you.
So you need to already thank him. God, thank you for being merciful. The fact that I even have the chance to repent. The fact that I'm not so far gone that I still want to repent. The fact that you're still working in me and you didn't let go of me and You're still disciplining me.
God, thank you for your mercy. May I say this? If there's any part of you that still wants to repent, That's the mercy of God in your life. Number two, now these first couple are basic. Number two, Lord, thank you for your mercy.
Number two, According to verse 1 and 2, Lord... Forgive me for the sin that I've committed.
Now, repentance is Obviously. Admitting that there's a sin and asking God to forgive it. Look at verse 1. He says, Blot out my transgressions. But he goes further in verse 2.
So in verse 1, he says, There's a sin that needs to be forgiven. But look at verse 2. Wash me. Not just the sin. Don't just fix the sin.
He says God cleaned the sinner. You know what? We have a lot of people, they just want to get forgiven of the sin. They just want to get that. taken care of.
Covered up.
So, they don't have to feel guilty about that anymore, so they can go on with life. But David doesn't just acknowledge the transgression. He says, wash me. Throughly from mine iniquity. and cleanse me from my sin.
Lord, forgive me. For the sin that I have committed. God, thank you for your mercy because it is already evident. that you are being merciful. that I am even repenting right now.
So God, thank you for your mercy. And God, please forgive me. for this sin. that I've committed. I'm so sorry.
Are you with me so far? Say amen. Number three. Very important. Lord I have no excuses.
Lord, I have no excuses. Look at verse 3. David says, For I acknowledge My transgressions. And My sin. is ever before me.
Even in verse 5, Behold, I was shapen in iniquity. David's not saying, Well, I'm a good person, this is just a one-time thing. No, I have iniquity. I'm a sinner. And in sin did my mother conceive me.
What is David saying here? He said, It's my transgression. I didn't do this because somebody else did something that made me do this, and I'm blaming them. We're very good at that.
Well, I did wrong and I'm wrong, but let me tell you what I've been through lately. Let me tell you why I've been under a lot of stress. Oh, I've been there. Yeah, yeah. I know I've been addicted to things on the internet, but my wife hasn't been the wife she's supposed to be to me.
Oh, somebody's not taking responsibility for their actions.
Somebody's trying to blame somebody else. That's not repentance. David said, I have No. Excuses. There is nobody to blame.
But me. And until you can get there. you're not ready to repent. Can I have a big old-fashioned amen right there, Kirwan Baptist Church? Listen, these teenagers need to hear this.
Because until you're ready to just have no excuses. and not blame anyone else. Until you're ready to get there. you're not ready to repent. David said, it's my sin.
It's my transgression. It's my iniquity. Lord, I have no excuses. I encourage you. If you're really wanting to bring repentance into your life, Thank God for his mercy.
Ask him to forgive your sin. And make sure he knows that you have no excuse. Yeah, that's good. According to verse 4, Lord. I am sorry for hurting you.
Lord, I am sorry for hurting You. You say, well, preacher, I've already said, Lord, I'm sorry for committing this sin. Yes, I know that. Look at verse 4. David said, Against thee.
Thee only have I sinned. and done this evil in thy sight. Against thee. And the only. Have I sinned?
See, you and I need to understand in repentance. One of the things that ought to make us want to repent is that we haven't just committed sin, we've hurt. God We have hurt and grieved our Heavenly Father. We have hurt the very one that saved us, that died for us. That gave himself for us.
Lord, I'm sorry for hurting you. You know, let me just use this as an illustration to all of the parents in the house. If you have to confront one of your children about something they've done wrong. You can usually tell immediately either they really are sorry for what they've done or they're just kind of frustrated that they got caught. And you can tell the difference.
But to all the parents in the house, can I ask you something? How does it make you feel if they ever and they may never have? But how do you think, how did it make you feel or would it make you feel? If your child looked at you in tears and said, Dad, mom. I'm sorry.
That I hurt you. I don't know about you, but that would make me think. There is a genuine repentant Spirit. And yeah, that's you're right. See, there is a difference in David's repentance here.
Because he knew he hurt God. Notice number five, according to verse six. Lord. I acknowledge that my heart is the issue. Lord, I acknowledge.
That my heart. is the issue. What did David say in verse 6? Behold, thou desirest truth. in the inward parts.
In the hidden part. Thou shalt make me. To know wisdom. What are we talking about here? We're talking about the heart.
The Bible says out of the heart are the issues of life. Where are we going with this? This means this, literally, what transpired. transpired Because way back when Something happened in David's heart. That was the root of this.
It's a heart issue. Listen, if some sin takes over your life, And we have individuals sometimes, and bless your heart, some of you have dealt with it. I have family that have dealt with it, with alcoholism and things. And listen, you've got to get this. People sometimes like, listen, I have an alcohol problem.
No, you have a heart problem. Preacher, I have an adultery problem. No, you have a heart problem. The adultery is a result of a heart problem. Everything in our life is a heart problem.
And so you and I have got to acknowledge this isn't just, oh, I had a problem looking at a woman on a rooftop. No, he looked at a woman on the rooftop. because his heart wasn't right with God. It's a hard issue. And you and I keep trying to fix The problems with band-aids instead of Fixing the problem.
That's good, you're right, yeah. That's good, brother. David said, God. You don't want me just to fix the outside and Just uh Put on a facade here. He says, you want truth.
on the inward parts. You want me to be truthful in the heart. I want to encourage you, Colonel Baptist Church. If you want to repent, It has to start in the heart. There will never be real change.
Until the heart changes. Everything changes when the heart changes. When the heart changes, the attitude changes, the spirit changes. The temperament changes. It all changes.
When the heart changes. You try to change any of those without changing the heart, it's not going to work.
Well, I'm going to get victory over temptation in my life. Not until you get your heart right. It's a heart issue. Notice next, according to verse 7. In verse 9.
Lord Work in me from the inside to the outside. Work in me. from the inside out. We as Christians even more specifically, Baptists sometimes. We try to work from the outside in.
We want to clean everybody up on the outside. We want everybody to look a certain way. We don't care whether the inside's right or not. As long as everybody looks a certain way. And I hope you know.
That I don't believe that way is your pastor. Yeah, hey.
Now I'm not saying you have to agree with me, but I'm just telling you, I've been in this thing my whole life. And I just don't agree with that. We produce robots. And there is not a sincere walk with God. And kids get out of out of the house.
and they have nothing to do with God anymore in their life. And I'm here to say, listen, I think the outside ought to look right. And all that, but I think that starts from the inside out. And here's my proof. Look if you would here.
And verse 7. Purge me with hyssop. And I shall be clean. Wash me. And I shall be whiter than snow.
Hide thy face from my sins. Blot out all mine iniquities. Purge. Me. This word purge.
It literally means from the inside out. How many of you know? You can change the outside without changing the inside. How many do you know? You cannot change the inside.
and not change the outside. That's right. That's good, brother. Next, according to verse 10. Things change.
All the way up through verse 9. David is Acknowledging David is apologizing. David is owning up. David is saying this is the situation. This is what I've done.
But in verse 10 He says, God, I've owned up. Um sorry. I've hurt you. It's my heart. I'm the one that's wrong.
I've got no excuses. I need you to change my heart. I need to be clean from the inside out.
So in verse 10, now David says in his prayer, God, this is what I'm asking you to do. I find it interesting that David didn't say, God.
Somehow repair my reputation with people. It's almost like David realized that's the least of my worries right now. worrying about what everybody else thinks. That's what some of us would be worried about. Trying to save face.
Notice in verse 10, number one, he says this, Lord. Create in me a clean heart. Create in me a clean heart. What did we say? David said, God.
It's a heart problem.
So what's the first thing that he needs God to do? He needs God to create in him a clean heart. starts there.
So what do we learn from this verse? If you're going to have a clean heart, it has to come from who? has to come from God. Any guesses on how God might do that? Any guesses on that?
That's good. Created me a clean heart. By the way, you and I ought to be praying this every day. You ought to wake up every day, God. Create me a clean heart today.
Yeah. Even during the night, Satan's had long enough time. to get in your heart. Because if you're like me, I lay down at night, I'm ready to go to sleep, all of a sudden, I start thinking of everything. What did they mean by that today when they said that?
Well, now that I've had time to process this. I've got a good response to that now. I'll come in the house sometimes. I did this week. I'm sorry.
This evil laugh of mine right now. I came in the house this week. I'm not sure if I can do it. My wife just looked at me. And she knew I was chewing somebody out in the car on the way home.
I was telling somebody exactly how I felt. They weren't in the car with me. I was talking to myself again. If I was getting it out. I found it's better to do it there than to the person.
Boy, and I'll let him have it. And I was right and I had a good point. And I would have won that one big time. Created me a clean heart. Notice next.
Verse 10, Lord. Renew a right spirit in me.
Now. I gotta stop here. We're gonna talk about this for a minute. Because this is a bit out of place. We're talking about sin, we're talking about repentance.
What we understand is there must be a wrong spirit that we can harbor within us. if there is a right spirit that must be renewed.
So, for David to say, God, you need to renew a right spirit in me, that means that there must be a wrong spirit. that can show up. It must mean that there is a wrong spirit that can be developed.
So, what does this mean? You see, in verse 2, David says, Wash me from mine iniquity, cleanse me from my sin. David realized The morning. and spiritual Dirtiness. That his sin had caused.
And now in verse 10, he says, God. Clean my heart. But then he says something strange. And renew a right spirit in me. What?
Starting over. With a clean heart in our spiritual life. Should give us the desire. to have a right spirit toward God. Toward people.
Toward our mate. toward our family. You see, a right spirit creates right relationships. The greatest news that anyone can receive is the news of the free gift of salvation found in Jesus Christ. It is our desire for you to know him personally.
Would you take a moment to hear this today? Every man is born with the sin nature, Romans 3.23 says, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. No matter how hard we try, We're not good enough to obtain God's glory. or to get to heaven. Because of that sin carries the penalty of death.
Romans 6.23 says, For the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The wages of our sin, or the payment of our sin, only equals death and separation from God. But it's only through God's gift salvation through Jesus Christ that we can accept him As our Saviour. Jesus Christ paid for your sin debt.
The Bible says in Romans 5:8, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. All you have to do is receive Christ. by faith as your Saviour. Romans 10:9 says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, Thou shalt be saved. Verse 13 continues: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
It's as simple as admitting that you're a sinner believing. that Jesus is the only way. and calling upon his name. Bible says whosoever, that's anyone. can call upon the name of the Lord to be saved.
