Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the Word of God to be spread throughout the world.
so that all may know Christ. Join us now. For a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church. Located in Kernersville, North Carolina. 2 Kings chapter 11.
I know that's a lot of info, but this paper wasn't mentioned, so I wanted to make sure we get that stuff mentioned, because it's important, and it's stuff that this church is active in. We have been dealing with our subject, the king is coming. And to be honest with you, about five, six weeks ago. I worked on this. I didn't really put finishing touches on it, I guess you would say, until this week.
But I've been looking forward to this. I will tell you this, that this is probably a story that we're going to deal with today that many of you have never heard. Many of you don't even know this is here. And I'm excited about it because we have to cover it. Because we're talking about the lineage, the line of Jesus Christ through the Word of God as He is coming to be our King.
And He already is King. but he is coming to proclaim himself as king and to show the world that he is king. And we've dealt with so many different areas. I'm not going to review all that. But let me catch you up a little bit.
All the way back in the book of Genesis, God gives a promise to Adam. And God gives this promise that He's going to send a Savior. Through the seed of a woman. Satan would bruise his heel. But he, the Savior, would bruise Satan's head.
Then we find he gives a promise to Abraham. And to Abraham, he promised that there would be a lamb. That would come to be the sacrifice for our sins.
So, Adam he promises literally a savior. To Abraham, he promises a lamb. And then, through Abraham, he makes this promise that. as he had chosen his people, and he was gonna be their God, and they were gonna be his people. There's also a promise that God said that there would be a king through his line, the Messiah through his line.
And then we come to David that we've dealt with for a number of weeks. And God makes this promise to David that he would establish his kingdom, but that out of David's seed would come the king. Not just that God would establish David's kingdom, but God would establish his kingdom through David's line, speaking obviously of Jesus Christ. And that's why in the New Testament, Even Jesus referred to as the son of David because of the lineage.
So, God made a promise through this line. And so after David, we have something interesting. 42 kings. And through this lineage, you can trace, and you have obviously Matthew chapter 1, and we have even in the Old Testament and Chronicles and different things, we have the lineage that is traced. And through all this, we have 42 kings, and then the kingdom splits.
And most of these kings Probably 90% of them are bad. And by the way, that's the problem with man being king and with man being in charge. Men at best are still just men. And I don't know about you. I'm glad Jesus is my king.
Every time in my life where I've tried to be the king, I have messed up the kingdom. And I'm thankful that Jesus is my king. But out of these 42 kings, there's back and forth and good and bad, and the kingdom splits. Israel is the northern kingdom. Judah is the southern kingdom.
Israel goes into captivity, is defeated first, literally by the Assyrians. And then later, obviously, Judah is captured and taken captive by the Babylonians.
So we have the kingdom, the kingdom splits. We have the trace all the way back to God said, I'll be your king, but they didn't want God as king. They wanted man as king. And so they chose Saul, and that didn't go well. And so God chose David, and God said, David, I'm going to establish your kingdom, but I'm also going to bring the king of kings through your lineage.
And so we trace it through 42 kings. And in the middle of that, there is one queen. 42 kings and one queen, and that's what we want to talk about today. Because with this one queen, things looked really bad. It looked as if the promise.
that God had made. He was not going to fulfill.
Now, Frank just read verses 1, 2, and 3 of 2 Kings 11. I want us to pray, and then we're going to jump right into it today. And our subject today is God Save the King. You say, well, why are we saying that? Do you know that that's, you know, this popular British statement?
It came from the Bible, and you're going to see it today. Let's pray. Lord, we love you. Thank you for all that you've done. I pray that you would bless in a special way.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Number one today, I want you to say today as we jump into this story, I want you to see. We see the danger. of wanting to be on the throne.
As we trace Jesus through this Old Testament, We trace him as king through the Old Testament. I told you all the way back to the first day that we dealt with this. That the problem is this, that you and I, we want a king. But we also want to be the king. We want a good king, but there's times in our life where we want to have control, where we want to have the authority.
We don't like being told. What to do. And as we begin this story of this one queen, in the line of 42 kings. I want you to notice a couple things about this. Look at verse 1.
The Bible says, and when Athaliah. And now I'm going to tell you, Frank did a great job. He pronounced every name wrong, and that's okay. That's okay. He's consistent and he's 100%.
And no, he didn't pronounce him wrong. It's all, you can look it up, and I've looked it up, and the best of our ability, we don't know exactly. And we could just call him Ahaz or something like that, you know. But notice this: and when Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead. She arose and destroyed All the seed royal.
Now look at the end of verse 3. And Athaliah, the queen, did reign over The land. All right, you're going to read it here in a second. Let me tell you what happens as we jump into this story. All this lineage, God says, listen, David, I'm going to bring a king through your lineage.
And we come all the way up here to Ahaziah. And Ahaziah dies. And when he dies, he's king. His mother. Athaliah.
She proceeds to kill All of her grandsons. Nana had a bad day. She wanted the throne, she wanted the power, she wanted the authority. And she wanted everything that came with that so bad. that when her son died, that she literally reached out and tracked down every one of his children and killed them so that she would have to have the throne.
Now we have a problem here. If she jumps in, And she kills all the seed. And she is now the queen. Wait a minute. then the line is done.
Then God has lied.
So then now this whole lineage thing has stopped. before the Messiah ever came. through this line.
Now, I want you to notice first, you think, well, how could somebody be so ruthless? How could somebody do something so mean? I mean, that just seems wrong, and it is wrong. And she was ruthless. And this came out of nowhere.
But can I tell you what? This is what happens when you decide you want to be in charge. This is what happens in your life. Look at me, Kerwin. This is what happens in your life when you decide you want to be on the throne.
You have no idea the depths that your flesh will go to. to get control of your life. You have no idea the things that you are capable of and that your flesh is capable of when you get to the point that you decide, I'm going to call the shots. in my life. She wanted to be on the throne.
She didn't want anybody ruling her. She wanted to be the one. ruling them. And I want to remind you today. You have a battle going on in your life, and I have a battle going on in my life.
We call it biblically the flesh. and the spirit. And here's the issue. You're going to put one of them on the throne. Amen.
You're either going to put Christ where he deserves to be. His rightful place. As king over your life, or you're going to determine to put yourself. In that room, there is a great danger that is attached. to you and I.
wanting to have control. of our own life. Let me just say this. You have no idea how simplified your life can become when Jesus becomes your king. You have no idea how easy decision-making is.
When you're not in charge. But do you want to complicate things? And you want to get to the point that you don't understand what's wrong with you. And you don't understand what's going on, and there's constant turmoil, constant battle inside. Let me tell you what's going on.
You're trying to take the throne. And be careful because your flesh can go to some very, very dark places. places. We see the danger. of wanting to be on the throne.
What a horrible Horrible grandmother. Kills. All of her grandsons. I want you to notice secondly. We see the importance.
of preserving godly heritage. in wicked surroundings.
Now let me tell you what goes on. Look if you would at verse 2. But Jehoshapha Now, of all things, listen to this. The daughter of King Horem, sister. Of Ahaziah.
Who's Ahaziah? Ahaziah is the king that died, and his mother came in and killed all of his children.
So, this is literally the queen's daughter, and she does something different there, and she sees what's going on. Notice this: she saw, here we know that the queen saw that her son was dead, and so she goes after and she kills all his grandson. Look at verse 2. But Jehoshaphat, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and stole him. from among the king's sons.
Which were slain. Notice this. And they hid him. Even him and his nurse. in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.
And he was hid. with her He was with her hid in the house of the Lord. The house of the Lord. Where is this at? The temple.
She jumps in. She saves one of her nephews. She pulls him. and hides him. And here, here we got Athaliah killing all of her grandsons, but Jehoshaphat takes one.
and they hide them in the house of God.
Now why did they hide them in the house of God? Because that's the one place Athalaya would never go. She had no respect for the house of God. She had no interest in the house of God because she wanted. the throne.
So here they take this little child. and they take him and they hide him in the temple. What's interesting, and you'll know that his name is Joash. and they hide him in the temple. for six years.
Everybody, thank you. Thanks. That all the heirs are dead. Athaliah thinks that all the heirs are dead, that she's the queen, nobody's going to take her throne. She thinks that she has accomplished it, she thinks that she has finished it, she thinks she has taken care of it, she thinks she's in charge.
And so many times in your life, you'll think you are too. Yeah, I think they did. But little do we know we're not in charge. God is Sovereign. What we see here is that one person decided to preserve a godly heritage.
It took courage for Jehoshaphat to hide Joash. She literally risked her life. She knew he was the rightful heir. She knew that that was right. And she knew that what her mom was doing was wrong.
And she risked everything to preserve a godly heritage. By the way, if she didn't do it, who was going to? In this story, literally, faith had to overcome fear. Right had to overcome wrong. The cause of Christ had to overcome the culture.
Athaliah's on the throne.
Now it's an evil kingdom. They start worshiping Balaam and Baal and the gods, and everything has turned one direction. But one woman decides that I'm going to stand up and I'm going to do what's right. May I say in 2025, you and I, listen, I believe with all my heart, Kirwan Baptist Church, the king is coming. And if there's ever a time that we should see the importance of preserving a godly heritage in the middle of wicked surroundings, it's in 2025.
Notice if you would in verse 2, I want you to see this on the screen. The Bible says that She snuck in and stole him. From among the king's sons. You know, maybe it's time instead of the world. continuing to steal everything from us.
Maybe it's time for us to steal it back. Maybe it's time to take it back. You know, the world's taking over influence. Maybe it's time for God's people. to start being the influencers once again.
I mean, have you looked at our culture to see what they call the influencers? How despicable. I don't know about you, the people of God. how to be the ones influencing. We're the ones hiding.
Instead of being the one influencing. I want you to notice number three as we continue with the story we see How the faithfulness of a few can accomplish God's purpose. Look at verse 4. And the seventh year, six years have gone by. An evil queen.
Is on the throne. She thinks she has eliminated the royal line. She thinks that she has taken care of all the threats to her.
Now she's taken over, closed up the temple. Boarded up where David's spears and armor was, and David, their ancestor, their king, and they boarded it up, closed the house of God, started opening up pagan temples and different things. And here in the middle of the temple, the real king, the rightful king, is hiding and in hiding and being protected. for six years. Look at verse 4.
And in the seventh year, Jehoiada Sent.
Now, who's Jehoiada? He's the priest. He's the man of God. And the seventh year, Jehoiada sent and fetched. The rulers over hundreds.
With the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the Lord.
Now, just think, you gotta think of this almost as a movie. I mean, just put yourself here. He calls the leaders, the military leaders. And he brings them to the house of God. Notice this, and made a covenant with them and took an oath of them in the house of the Lord.
and showed them the king's son. This whole time they thought it was over. Things have turned, culture's taken over, and evil queens in charge. We got no hope, no living heirs. Everybody sees what this has done to the king.
And then they bring them in. and out walks a seven-year-old. And they see him. and realize this is the king's Sun. Yeah, I agree.
Look at verse 5. And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing. That ye shall Do. Listen to me, doing right is more than saying it. Doing right means we do something about it.
I'm going to explain in just a minute. Look at this. A third part of you, that enter in on the Sabbath, Shall even be keepers of the watch. of the king's house. He said, Here's the real king.
This is what we're going to do: you're going to protect him. You're going to guard them. Look at verse 6. And a third part shall be at the gate. He said, I want some of you to protect him around where he's at.
I want a third of you to go out, and I want you to protect the gates. Notice this, and a third part at the gate behind the guard.
So shall ye keep the watch of the house that it be not broken down. He's like, listen, when we start doing right here and we start telling who the real king is here, there's going to be a lot of things that are going to come against us. And by the way, when you put Jesus on the throne, there's going to be a lot of things come against you. And he said, What I need for you guys to do is set up guard. You need to watch the house, you need to watch the first gate, you need to watch the second gate.
Now, notice this: look at verse 7. And two parts of all you that go forth on the Sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king, and ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand. Notice this: and he that cometh within the ranges, anybody that enters into that area, let him be slain. And be ye with the king. As he goeth out, And as he cometh in.
Preacher, that's a lot of scripture.
So what is our point here? Remember. We see how the faithfulness of a few can accomplish God's purpose. We see the faithfulness of the priesthood. We see Jehoiada's leadership and protecting Joash.
We not only that, but We see the protection of the priests. We see the man of God trying to do what's right. We see the importance of spiritual leadership in times of crisis. He fetched the rulers, he told them that you would keep watch, keep guard, be aware. Their job was to not let the king's house be broken down.
There was to be no compromise. Anybody that wasn't supposed to be there was supposed to be killed. Do you even get the application here for our lives? Let me tell you something. This is not time for you and I to sit around and get as much of the world into our church as we can.
This is time for us to be on watch, to be on guard, to be aware, because Jesus is the rightful King. Let me tell you something, you got habits that end up in your life that shouldn't be there, kill them. Anything that gives you a good idea. Gets into the area of your life that's not supposed to be there. Deal with it now.
Because you're going to have to choose who your king is. If Jesus is your king, then protect your king. If Jesus, where is he king? In my heart, then protect your heart. Where is he king?
In my mind. Then protect your mind. Put a guard everywhere. If the computer's a problem, smash it. If the phone's a problem, get a flip phone.
If alcohol is a problem, quit drinking. Quit drinking. If there's anything in your life... That is starting to take over an area. That should never be there.
Let me tell you what's going to happen. You let it in there. And it's going to keep getting further and further and further. Do you see what's going? Jehoiada says: listen.
if we're going to protect the king. We're going to have to protect all the areas around the king. And if you're going to protect your heart, and if you're going to protect your mind, and if Jesus is going to be your king, you're going to have to set a guard here, you're going to have to set a guard there, you're going to have to put guards all over your life and your heart and your mind. And if anything ends up there that shouldn't be there, kill it now.
Now, listen, you all, you say, This is a tornado day. What is going on? Hey, listen, we need to hear this. This is absolutely true. And you, young generation, here, some of you teenage guys, especially, let me tell you something.
I see so many young men getting caught in addiction and things in their life right now. You better nip it in the bud now. You better stop it now. You better get away from it now. You better clean your life now.
You better clean your mind now. You better get your eyes off that junk. Get your heart away from that junk. Because if you don't now, it's going to take over your life. Amen.
Yes, sir. Can I ask you something? How did Athaliah become queen? Because she killed. All the king's sons.
Look at me. How did she kill all the king's sons? Nobody was guarding them. Nobody was guarding them. You know how an evil person gets on the throne?
Nobody's guarding. You know how you end up on the throne of your own life? by letting your guard down. I can tell I need to jump off that real fast. I want you to look at verse 9.
We see the significance of every person doing their part. God's wide. The line's gone. Lineage is done. All the heirs are dead.
God promised that the line would go all the way through here, that Messiah would come. But now there's no heirs. There's no way for this seed to continue. That's what everybody thought. Look at verse 9.
And the captains over the hundreds did according to all the things that Jehoiada the priest commanded.
Now notice this, and they took what? Every man. His men. That were to come in on the Sabbath, with them that should go out to the Sabbath. and came to Jehoiada the priest.
And to the captains over hundreds did the priests give King David spears and shields. Uh-oh, look what happened. They broke off the locks, opened up the old weapons. And started handing out David's spears and David's swords and David's shields.
Now we're cooking with peanut oil. But notice this, look at verse 10. And the guard stood. Every Man. with his weapons in his hand.
Round about the king. Notice from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple. along by the altar. and the temple. Do you understand my point this morning?
Every man stood with his weapon. Look at me. It wouldn't do much good to keep guard. if everybody didn't do their job. If every man didn't have his weapon, if every man didn't stand where he was, if every man didn't follow orders, if every man didn't do what he was supposed to do, there would be an opening.
There would be a way for this to be ruined. But every man did his job, and every man got his weapon, and every man stood where he was supposed to stand. And I am telling you: listen to me, Colonel Baptist Church, we need everybody involved. We need everybody to stand. We need everybody to get their weapons in their hand, and everybody here.
to serve your king. Let me tell you where things start falling apart is when not everybody does their job. When everybody doesn't do their job.
Now people got to start doing their job and somebody else's job. Can I tell you what I've seen in church over the years? You got 10% of the people trying to do 90% of the work. They're worn out, they're tired, they get frustrated, they're never thanked, they're never appreciated, and then when they do something, the crowd that's not doing anything always has something negative to say. And here's what I'm saying.
If you're not standing on guard and you don't have your weapon, keep your mouth shut. Y'all agree with me on that? If you're not doing anything, shut your mouth about those that are. And if you start doing something, guess what? You'll probably keep your mouth shut anyway.
Because then you'll know what it's like. I'm going to tell you, I get it all the time. I get advice from people corrected by people that have never pastored a church. They have no clue what it's like.
Well, I don't understand why you don't do whatever.
Well, have you ever passed a church?
Well, you probably will never understand why. Every man, listen, we see the significance of every person doing. there. part. I want you to know here this morning And hey, we're not even on full crowd here this morning, but I want you to know this morning.
Every one of you are important. Every one of you are needed. Every one of you, there is a place here. And it might take a little work and figure it out and find out what God wants, but I want you to know we need every person doing their part. Can you imagine what would happen?
If everybody in this church decided to do that. Oh my goodness. Look at verse 12. We're almost done. You think, thank God.
I want you to see this. We see the priority of choosing your king. Look at verse 12. and he brought forth the king's son. and put the crown upon him.
and gave him, notice this. The testimony. He didn't just put the crown on him, which means he was the king. He proclaimed him to be king. He testified.
They hear the king. You're the rightful king. Notice this. Please watch. And they made him king.
and anointed him. And they clapped their hands and said, and this is where they got it. I traced the lineage. I think it's about 400 years ago, is where it started. God started.
Save the king. Listen to me, it means this: that at some point in your life, you're gonna have to decide. who you're going to put the crown on. Yeah, still actually completely. Is it gonna be you?
Is it going to be people? Is there going to be some Besetting sin in your life? Is that what's going to rule you? At some point, you're going to have to crown.
Somebody. You're going to have to make them king. And you're going to have to testify and proclaim that they're my king. And I am saying today, you've got to choose. Who's going to be king of your life?
So much I'd like to say. You notice that they put the crown on, they proclaimed him to be king, they made him king, they anointed him. And they clapped their hands. They praised. I don't know about you.
It's starting to. Um maybe wear on me more than it used to when I was young. The fact that there are so many Christians that never seem to praise. Never seem to get excited about the things of God. And it would be different.
There's a lot of people, they just don't ever get excited. You know, you may now kiss your bride.
Okay.
Some people that's just their personality. But I have a hard time. When a person can cheer and get excited at a ball game and this and that, and man, they get into this and that, and blah, blah, blah. But man, you come to church and you sing about our king, and we sing how great our king is, and all that our king has done for us, and how he saved us, and all these things, and we can't get a hand lifted, or an amen, or a smile. or anything.
Listen to me. They clap their hands. It's okay. I've never have preached on this passage, to be honest with you, but I have used this passage. Every once in a while, I'd be in evangelism somewhere and.
Churches are different.
Some churches are taught don't clap. You know, when I came here to Kerwin, Kerwin, somebody sings, Kerwin's way of saying amen many times is they start clapping. And it's their way, hey, we appreciate your effort. Thanks for singing. I agree with what you're saying.
But there are some churches, some up north, even some out west, whatever, you don't clap. That's disrespectful. It's giving praise to man. Thank you for listening today. We hope you received a blessing from our broadcast.
