Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the Word of God to be spread throughout the world.
So that all may know Christ. Join us now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church, located in the world. Tonight, I want to talk about the deception of resentment. And we're going to deal with chapters 38 to 42 in different pieces. Not long tonight.
Again, it's been It's been a different March and April, we have been busy. We've had so many things, and it's just you look back and you think, God has the ladies' conference, the phenomenal response, the church in the park, all those things. God's been very good to our church. I hope you know that. And you, church, have been very good and faithful, and God's honored that.
Again, every week I say, hey, well, this is probably it. And then, you know, like I told you, I get some.
Some information folks reach out and just feel like, hey, you know, there's still some ground to turn over here. And if you're gonna deal with it, might as well deal with it. I don't know how you can really kind of do a series on resentment if you stop and just look at somebody and say, all right, just Places in the Bible. We're going to talk about the subject of resentment. Give me a few.
I don't know how you can't go to the book of Job. to be honest with you. You know the story. But I do want to bring you up to speed a little bit. Job had what was probably beyond Jesus Christ.
Uh one of the worst days ever. And it all happened within a day. Job lost all of his children. Lost everything he had, lost all of his. earthly possessions, lost his health.
And lost friends, lost acquaintances. What you and I often forget is that when all this happened to Job. And people began to. I mean, I'm talking about people not just. loosely related to Joe, but but friends, family.
Many of them judged Job, and here's why. Many of them took this attitude: well, it must have happened to Job because he did something wrong. This must have happened because of him. And literally, people that were at one time close with Joe began to distance themselves, thinking, well, you know, all these bad things are happening, this happened, it must have been he did something wrong. And then he had three friends show up.
And what wonderful friends. I've met some of them, and they just have a. Their life verse is a word fitly spoken, is like apples of gold and pictures of silver. Oh, you're down. Let me kick you down further, you know.
They showed up and basically preaching to Job, letting him know he was the reason all this happened, and they had no clue what they were talking about. And, you know, a lot of times people don't have a clue. What they're talking about. They're just talking. We've all been guilty of that at times.
But I will tell you this: that despite all that happened, Job said, You know what? I'm not going to charge God foolishly. I'm not going to get mad at God. And his wife said, Listen, why don't you curse God and die? And he said, Listen, that's a foolish thing to say.
So literally immediately Job handled this that he didn't get mad at God and resent God and all those things. But I don't know if many of you have found out, but there are things that happen in life in the initial hit of it. I have found at times that I handed it Pretty well. When I look back, it's the after effects. that I struggled with.
I mean, in the time of, my faith was strong. I have, you know, during those opening months when we first had Caden and, you know, four open heart surgeries, and, you know, obviously. Those in the first few months, and then, of course, in the first couple years, you know, during the surgeries and hospital stays and all that, man, what else can you do? I can't change anything, and you just find that God's grace is sufficient and your faith is strong and all that. But I'm going to be honest with you, it's an everyday life.
When things begin to hit, then you realize that it hits you harder than you thought. And now that Job's friends showed up, we find in the first 37 chapters. that Job had developed resentment. at his friends. Probably maybe some other people in his life.
And Job had gotten an attitude, and I gotta be honest with you, it wouldn't have taken me 37 chapters. It would have happened in chapter one, you know, and the first stub of my toe, I'm mad, you know, kind of a thing. Job took a lot, but You know, a lot of good people can take a lot. But old Satan can wear you down. And life can wear you down, and circumstances can wear you down.
Here's what I'm trying to say: look at me. Oftentimes, when you're worn down, you're tired, you're weak, that's when somebody. or groups of people will come up. Say the wrong things. at the wrong time.
And it can literally bring deep-seated resentment. There might have been a time where you could have taken what they said and just let it roll off your back. But there are also times When they do that, you can't let it roll off your back. It hits you like a ton of bricks. And you're hurt.
You're angry. And if you and I are careful what can happen, we can get some deep-seated Resentment.
Now, let me ask this: would we say Job was justified? Yeah, probably so. Probably so we could see at least the reasoning. We could see how it happened. But Job had developed resentment.
You know what's interesting in. The first chapter of Job, we're told that Satan came to God and he said, You know, what about your servant Job? And he's perfect and all this stuff. But I'll tell you why he's perfect, God. I'll tell you why he loves you, God, because nothing bad's happened to him.
Let me add them. And we'll see who the real Job is. And obviously, I'm giving you a synopsis of it. And God said, well, okay. But you can't kill them, you can't harm them.
Have you ever thought that, you know, why in the world would God Allow some of this. It doesn't make sense. I'm not saying it does, but God's ways are above our ways. But have you ever thought that Job lost all of his children and health and all this stuff, and somehow the wife lived? Have you ever thought about that?
No, our sarcastic answer was: Satan knew it was best for him if she stayed alive. You know, he would be a great help to her. And that's not really the case, by the way, I don't believe. But I will tell you why, because God told Satan, you can't. Killed Job and the Bible says when you're married the two are one.
There was a protection there on her. And so the friends come, and all these things and begins to develop, then Job begins to talk to God. His friends talk to Job. Job talks to his friends. Job's talking to God.
The friends are talking to God. All this is going on. resentment had developed. And I can understand it. Maybe.
And what I would say tonight specifically with this story. We're not just talking about circumstances tonight. I really am dealing tonight. I want to give you eight steps. to deal with deep-seated resentment.
specifically when it comes to people. And, you know, in the New Testament, I think it's interesting. We're asked the question, who hath hindered you? Not what, who hath hindered you. People can get to you.
And I understand it.
So I want us to begin in chapter 38 here in just a minute. I want to thank you again for being just such a wonderful church. My son Daniel graduates from college. on Thursday. We're going to be out of town.
Tomorrow night, Tuesday, and part of Wednesday, be back for church Wednesday night. And Daniel graduates. I appreciate you praying for him. I'm very proud of him on that. We just love this church, love you.
You've been a wonderful church. And I was thinking today, thank you for your kindness to my friend Michael Cooper. who was here today and I'm so proud to bring somebody here. You know, why does a guy show up from Florida? Because I told him how this church has prayed for him.
Most of most of you didn't know Michael, but I think many of you prayed for him. He felt loved here. And I'm proud of you as a church. I'm proud to show off my church. I feel like you ought to be that way too.
You ought to be proud of your church. Quit picking apart every little thing you don't like. Start looking at a hole and realize God's blessed this church. We ought to be proud of what God is doing here. We are blessed.
You start moving around a little bit. Let me tell you something. We are very, very blessed. And that's all I'll say about that. Chapter 38, I want you to notice number one and verse one, the Bible says, then the Lord.
answered Job, Out of the whirlwind. Here's what's interesting. In chapter one, Satan comes to God and God obviously returns to Satan and they allow this. And then everything happens to Job, and over time, what happens to Job? People are now talking about Job, then people are talking to Job, and then Job's wife is talking to Job, and Job is talking to his wife, and then people in the community are talking about Job and to Job.
And then Job's friends show up, and Job's talking to God. Job's talking to his friends. Job's friends are talking to Job. They're talking to God about Job. Job talks to God about all the unfair things, talks to God about his friends, talks to God about, and in the 37 chapters, guess who hadn't talked yet?
God hadn't. Finally, in chapter 38, God gets a word in edgewise. Check the book, you'll find out. In chapter 38. Then the Lord answered Job.
It's almost like, can I talk now, Joe? Can I say something? What you notice, number one, When we talk about eight steps to deep-seated resentment, number one is this. We need to submit to the authority of God.
Now, I'm going to tell you something. One of the hardest things about resentment is we begin to feel wounded, we feel wronged. And we can look at ourselves literally as a martyr, as whatever the case might be, and it's understandable. But here's what happens: we start to become an entity of ourselves. Like, how dare somebody do that to me?
And what is lost in all that is that every day you and I are to die to self anyway. and submit to the authority of God. Job has pleaded his case, told everything that's happened. But look what God says, the first thing God says. Look at verse 1.
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind. That's the description of all that Job had been through. Look at verse 2. God. says this to Job.
Who is this that darkeneth counsel? By words without knowledge. God said, Who are you? to start giving advice. That's absolutely ridiculous.
You are simply using words, and you have no knowledge. You ever been around somebody like that?
Well, they had a whole bunch of words, but not much knowledge. A lot of politicians that way, that's all I'll say about that. A lot of words. And there's no knowledge whatsoever. Look at verse 3.
Gird up now thy loins like a man. Oh, yeah. We're talking. How about a guy that went through more than any human being that I know of besides Jesus Christ? And God looks at him and says, Listen, why don't you start being a man?
Put your big boy breeches on, Job. You see, after 37 chapters, God's got a few things to say.
Now now notice what he says. For I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. He says, Guess what, Job?
Now it's time for you to listen to me. You've been asking me for answers for 37 chapters.
Now I'm going to ask you some questions. Let's see if you have some answers for me. Do you see where God's going with this? Who do you think you are, Job? Just because I considered you worthy and perfect enough to allow some of this to go on.
All of a sudden, now this has slipped into the case that now you think you can tell me what to do. And what happens oftentimes when you and I have resentment, we begin to start trying to tell God how He should operate, what He should do to others, how they have done you wrong, and God stops this thing right in the process. Look, if you would, at verse 3: Gird up thy loins like a man, I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Job, where were you when I created the earth?
Oh, that's right. You weren't. You're talking to the guy that created everything you see. Who do you think you are? Look at this.
Declare. if thou hast understanding. All right, Job, let's hear it. You know how all that was done? Do you know how the earth was created?
You know how the sun and moon were created? You know how all this was done? This whole thing was spoken into existence by my word. You got any other advice for me? You see, for somebody that's been talking 37 chapters, Job doesn't have a lot to say right now.
Look at verse 5. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Who measured the earth? Who put the continents in order? And all these things.
Or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone thereof? He's going through the entire creation process, asking him step by step: you don't even know how this operates, Job. Not only could you not do this, not only did you not do this, you don't even understand how it was done.
I am so far above you. And yet now you're telling me. how things should be done. Look at verse 7. Job says, When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy, were you there?
Or who shut up the sea with doors when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud, the garment, put the clouds in the sky. and thick darkness a swaddling for it. I could read on and on, but What is God saying here? Job, I'm in charge.
I'm in charge. Can I give you a little piece of advice? I'm not saying that I'm the best at taking it. But preachers sure can give advice. I sometimes don't take my own advice.
But can I tell you something? No matter what somebody does to you or says about you. They are not in charge. They are not in authority. Are you with me tonight?
They are not an authority. Look at me. God's The authority.
So quit giving them authority. If you let what somebody says absolutely obsess your life, control your life, bring resentment left and right, you have given them authority in your life that they don't have. Number one, submit to the authority of God. Realize your place. You say, what does this have to do with resentment?
Hold on. This is exactly how God dealt with Job. And by the time God was done dealing with Job with these eight steps, guess what? Job was fixed. Number one, you have to submit to the authority of God.
Notice number two, it's time to let God do the talking. Look at Job chapter 40, verse 1. Moreover, the Lord answered Job and said, Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him?
So if you have a disagreement with God, You're the one that should instruct me, God says. Notice this: he that reproveth God. Let him answer it. Then Job answered the Lord and said, Behold, I am vile. What shall I answer thee?
I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. Once I have spoken, but I will not answer. Yea, twice, but I will proceed no further. Do you hear what Job is saying? Job is saying, God, I am going to shut my mouth.
You know one of the Step number two in resentment is to start letting God do the talking. If you can excuse my expression, why don't you shut your mouth about it? Quit going everybody about it. Quit complaining about it. Quit telling everybody everything everybody did to you and how bad they were and what they said and all that stuff.
You know what Job said for 37 chapters he's been running his mouth to everybody about it. And God says, Listen, so you're trying to give me instruction?
So now you're the one talking? And all of a sudden, after chapter 38 and 39, Job is finally. God answers and tells him and shows him who he really is. And Job stops and he says, I'm vile. I've run my mouth too much.
I literally got to put my hand over my mouth. Oh, I answered once and I answered twice and I kept talking, but I'm done. I'm done about this, God. You're in charge. I don't know about you, but I find myself wanting to do the talking in my life.
You and I have to take steps. To let God do the talking. You notice number three, I want you to see this. Stop trying to do God's job. Chapter forty, verse six.
Notice what this says. Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind and said, Gird up thy loins like a man, I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me that thou mayest be righteous?
So, Job, you're telling me I'm wrong, which means you think you're righteous and I'm not. I'm God. Look at this. Hast thou an arm? Like God?
Any of you here tonight at Kerwin, do you have an arm like God? Can you do what God can do? Look what he says. Or canst thou thunder? with a voice like him Do you understand what God's saying here?
Job, quit trying to manipulate this thing. Quit trying to change this thing. Quit trying to make things happen. Quit trying to go here and there. Listen, you don't have an arm like mine.
You don't have a voice like mine. You don't have wisdom like I do. You're not righteous like I am. You don't know what I know.
So let's quit trying to do God's job. Let's let God be God. See what happens when you and I start suffering from resentment different times. All of a sudden, now we think we know the best plan, we think we know what should happen. And if you're not careful, you and I will start trying to do God's job.
Boy, God's putting a licking on Job right now. Once you notice number four. Number fourth step is to humble yourself. Think of Job 42. Then Job answered the Lord.
And said, Now Job sounds really different right now than he did. for about 30 chapters. This is what Job says to God. I know that thou canst do everything. Your arm is bigger than mine.
Your voice is. more thundering than mine. Your wisdom is far greater. Than mine. I know that thou canst do everything and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered that I understood not. Things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. Here I beseech thee, and I will speak. I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth thee. Notice this: wherefore I abhor myself and repent in dust. and ashes. Did the friends do him wrong? Yes.
Did some of his family do him wrong? Yes. Did the community do him wrong? Yes. They all judged him prematurely.
They had no clue what they were doing. But in God's eyes, that didn't justify his resentment.
So, what do we find out here? Oftentimes, resentment. is a sign of pride. It's a sign of pride. When we carry around resentment, It's a sign of pride.
And guess what happened? Job finally saw God for who he was. And when God started talking, Job finally saw himself. for who he was. And he humbled himself.
Number five. Told you I'm going through these quick. For seven Step number five is to trust God to make things right. This is a big one. See, part of resentment means I think that person's going to get away with it.
Nothing's ever going to happen to them. Here I am struggling and hurting because of what they did to me. A mate that was unfaithful. person whose words and slander hurt you Look at Chapter 42, I mean, look at verse 7. And it was so, after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job.
The Lord said to Eliphaz, oh, there's one of the friends. The Lord said to Eliphaz the Timonite, My wrath is kindled against thee. You see, Here he is correcting Job for his resentment. But guess what else God did? He dealt with the friends too.
You see, you guys, you all of us need to understand. We don't have an excuse to react the way we do to things, but we are ignorant if we don't think God. is going to hold things accountable. Notice what he says. He says, My wrath is kindled against thee and against thy two friends.
For ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. What did God say? He's telling this guy, listen, you and your two friends, you ran your mouth. As if you were speaking for me. And even talking about me, guess what?
Congratulations. Every word you said was wrong. It's hard to do, but you got them all wrong. I love this little verse saying, Therefore, take Unto you now, seven bullocks, seven rams, go to my servant Job and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering, and my servant Job shall pray for you. For him will I accept, lest I deal with you after your folly.
You better go to Job, you better apologize, you better sacrifice there in front of Job, and you better ask Job if he'll pray for you. Because if Job doesn't pray for you, I'll listen to Job, God says. But if he doesn't pray for you, you're in trouble. Look at verse 9.
So Eliphaz the Timonite and Bildad the Shuhite, my dad said that was the shortest man in the Bible. Build add the shoe height. Shoe height. And Zophar the Namathite went and did according as the Lord commanded them. Yeah, I bet they did.
God shows up in chapter 38 and starts letting everybody know. Who's in control? Please get this. One of the biggest, one of the hardest things for people to let go of resentment is they think if they let resentment go. that they're giving a free pass to the person.
Get this. You have nothing to do. with their judgment. You holding on to the resentment. is not going to do one thing.
that letting go of the resentment won't do. You see, you and I by faith have got to understand we've got to trust God. to make things right. What's interesting here, Job wasn't even here when he deals with these three friends. See, a lot of times you don't realize, you think that you're hurting and you think this person did this and they're never going to pay for it and they're never, whatever.
Look at me, God's a bigger God than that. God can deal with them. in an instant. You don't have any clue what's going on in their life. You don't have any clue of maybe the misery they have when they try to go to bed at night.
You don't know what's going on in their relationships. You don't know what's going on in their life. And I don't have to know. All I have to know is God. And God is a righteous judge.
And God said, Job, you let me take care of this. Quit trying to do my job. Shut your mouth. Quit telling me what to do. I'll take care of it.
I'm a big enough God. You weren't there when the earth was created. I was. My arm can do more than your arm can do. My mouth can do more than your mouth can do.
Do you understand when God said, does your voice thunder? Like mine does, what is God saying? Listen, Job, shut your mouth. You can't do with your mouth what I can do with mine. Ooh.
Hey, all of us Baptists need to learn that, right? God can do more with his mouth than we can do with ours, so it would be wise for us to shut it. Number six. It's a tough one. Start praying for those who hurt you.
I'm just going with this is a this is what God did with Job Verse 10, and Lord turned the captivity of Job. When he prayed, for his friends.
Now notice this, also the Lord gave Job twice as much. as he had before.
So this whole thing turned around. when Job started praying for them.
Now listen, here's what I've dealt with in my life. I have literally gotten down physically, went. The greatest news that anyone can receive is the news of the free gift of salvation found in Jesus Christ. It is our desire for you to know him personally. Would you take a moment to hear this today?
Every man is born with a sin nature. Romans three twenty three says For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. No matter how hard we try, we're not good enough to obtain God's glory. or to get to heaven. Because of that, sin carries the penalty of death.
Romans 6.23 says, For the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life. through Jesus Christ our Lord. The wages of our sin, or the payment of our sin, only equals death and separation from God. But it's only through God's gift salvation through Jesus Christ that we can accept him as our Saviour.
Jesus Christ paid for your sin debt. The Bible says in Romans 5:8, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. All you have to do is receive Christ. by faith as your Saviour. Romans ten nine says That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Verse 13 continues, For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. It's as simple as admitting that you're a sinner believing that Jesus is the only way. and calling upon his name. Bible says whosoever that's anyone can call upon the name of the Lord to be saved. Have you accepted Christ as your personal Savior?
There is no greater day than today to take care of this. Would you accept Christ as your Savior? If you have any questions, please give us a call at 336-993-5192 or visit our website at Kerwin Baptist Church. Dot com. or visits that person at one of our three service times.
We hope you have a great rest of your day. God bless you. Mm-hmm.
