It is! The J.R. Sportbrief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to everybody tuned in and locked in all over North America. I hope you have had a tremendous Thursday.
I'll be hanging out with you for one more hour. This show gets started every weekday at 6pm Eastern, 3 Pacific. I'm in Atlanta. Thank you to our super producer and host, Ryan Hickey, holding it down for us in New York City. Whether you happen to be on the East Coast, the West Coast, down South, Midwest, you could be in Canada.
You could be over an ocean, wherever you are, under the sea, in the air, whatever. Thank you for being here. You can always tune in on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. You got Sirius XM.
It's 375. If you got a smart speaker, ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. What a show. Hey, thank you so much to former All-Star Seattle Mariners legend, Big Baseball family. Thank you to Brett Boone for joining us last hour. He's disappointed in how much money the Mariners have not spent. And if we take a look, you took a look at how much money the Dodgers have spent on their roster as they raised their flag today. And he's like, man, Dodgers are ridiculous. Okay, we all know that. What a wild world. You missed that conversation with Brett Boone.
Hit rewind on the free Odyssey app. Hey, we got March Madness going on. We got a slate of games in the sweet 16.
We finally made it. Alabama leads BYU 80 to 65. It's about 10 minutes to go in the, or in the game in the second half. Meanwhile, just coming out of halftime, the Florida Gators, they lead Maryland 50 to 42. It's about 15 minutes, 16 minutes or so left in that game.
And so maybe Kevin Willard, he'll be relieved of his duties. Hickey, how long if he loses tonight and it's curtains for the Maryland Terps? When is he announced as the new head coach of Villanova? On Sunday? Oh, I was going to say Friday night.
Oh my God. They're in San Francisco. So I, if they were on the East coast, like the other game, BYU, Alabama is in New Jersey. If they were New Jersey and they're just going back to Maryland, I would say tomorrow 11 AM. Wow.
So a little later because of the cross country flight, you got to get a little sleep. I'm sure, you know, hammer out the final details of their agent. I bet you by Saturday, he's the coach. Damn.
Yeah. Kevin Willard got his team in a sweet 16 and he has done nothing really, but over the past two weeks complain about the athletic department, how much money the school is spending, the resources that he has. And just yesterday, he was just trying to avoid the topic. He kept broaching it until yesterday. He's just, they asked him, why you keep bringing this up? And he just, he wanted to focus in on Florida right now. Listen to what he said yesterday.
Why have you felt like kind of bringing this discussion in the open has been the best way to advocate for your program? Well, I mean, I'll be honest. I think our biggest thing is we got to stop Clayton. He's really good. He shoots the basketball going left 48%. He shoots it right going at like 38%.
So really the last couple of days, I'm trying to come up with a game plan to stop, you know, Clayton. Cause I just think he's one of the best guards in the country that we've seen. Oh, now, now he doesn't want to talk about it, huh? All of a sudden, everybody got, got a lot to say until they don't. We talked earlier in the show, Steven A. Smith responding to LeBron James and Steven A. Smith just said a lot of dumb stuff earlier today, including bringing up the fact, just trying to illustrate how bad of a dude LeBron James is. Steven A. Smith is just like, Oh, he didn't even go to the funeral of, of, of Kobe Bryant.
He didn't go to the memorial service. It's like, yo man, why are you bringing that up? Like that's lame.
That's lame. And then it wasn't even accurate. Even he had to admit afterwards that what he said wasn't accurate and that he shouldn't even set it in the first place. Well, actually do a little thinking before you speak and everybody makes mistakes, especially when you're talking every day.
Yes, it's going to happen. But to be that much of an ass, just please do better. We heard from Dan Hurley, the head coach at Yukon. He said next year, he's going to try to do better.
You've been doing too much chatting. And then thank you so much to John Crispin, college basketball analyst for Westwood One. He came through and had a chat with us and he said, look, this game between Alabama and BYU, it would be a shootout.
Well, damn it. BYU is trying to catch up. They got some catching up to do.
Alabama leads them 86 to 68. BYU better catch up fast. And as we continue on with the show, I'm going to get to the phone lines. I do want you to hear some words from Jay Billis. He has some thoughts on this whole NIL and coaches moving around transfer portal stuff. We'll give you an update on what's going on in baseball, keep you up to date on the Sweet 16.
And then of course, at the end of the show, we'll go through a few things that took place this day in sports history. But before we do any of that, let's go ahead and hit the phones. 888-710-4ISN.
That's 888-710-4ISN. Marty is here from Westchester, New York. Marty, you're on the JR Sport Brief Show. What's up? Yes.
Good evening, JR. I really enjoyed your interview with Brett Boone. And, you know, as far as the Yankees are concerned, he made the point, obviously, about Goldschmidt and Bellinger, the two pick-ups during the offseason. But I also think that, you know, the young players have to step it up a little bit. Hopefully, Austin Wells, I'm referring to him, and also Anthony Volpe. Now, if they could be a little bit more consistent with their hitting, they seem to be very good defensive players, which is what the Yankees need, because that was their weakness last year.
I think they've shorted that up a little bit. But obviously, they're going to miss Colin. They're going to miss, of course, well, Soto. The loss of Soto is big.
And who knows when Stan's going to come back. So these other players are going to have to step up for them. Yeah, absolutely. And we saw both Volpe and Wells hit home runs for the Yankees earlier today, helping them to go out there and win the opener against the Brewers. Ultimately, I look at the lineup, I agree with you. And I'm trying not to be too judgmental on the New York Yankees until we get into July and August to see what a Wells, to see what a Volpe, a Dominguez, what they go out and do. Because the Yankees are going to have to, they're going to have to spread that offense out throughout the lineup. The lineup doesn't look, you know, when you don't have a Soto hitting right there with Judge, it's certainly going to change things. And yeah, I mean, is a Goldschmidt going to bounce back?
And Brett Boone said the same thing. Is Bellinger going to bounce back? Is Volpe going to be consistent? What's Wells going to do?
So they're all going to have to chip in. Aaron Judge can't just be the end all be all of the New York Yankees offense. And I reserve, I reserve full comment until we get past the trade deadline, because I'm sure and certain the New York Yankees will add somebody in the rotation if they can.
And we'll see. But either way, I don't know who they're going to add that is going to make them, you know, any type of favorite over the Dodgers if they can even escape the American League, you know? I agree with that because the American League East is going to be very competitive this year. The Red Sox have improved and I'm not really, I'm not ready to sell the Orioles short just yet, even though they lost a couple players. I'm not either. It seems to be a younger division and the Yankees are not the clear cut just to beat the living hell out of everybody.
It's going to be an interesting year, to say the least. Hey, Marty, always a pleasure, man. Likewise.
Have a great weekend, JR. You as well. Thank you, Marty, for calling up from Westchester, New York. Yeah, the New York Yankees, they went out on a baseball game against the Brewers earlier today this afternoon. It was chilly. It was I think it was like 50 something degrees.
The Yankees ended up winning four to two. Hickey, what was the temperature day in New York? Was it like 50? Yes, 50 degrees, but the sun was out, so it felt warmer.
Wow, I hit up one of my boys. He was at Yankee Stadium and he was like, man, it's chilly in there. Well, you know, you get the wind blowing and all of that. I was just going to say, I don't know what it was like at Yankee Stadium, but if the wind was blowing, yeah, I could imagine. Like New York City, obviously you're blocked by the buildings. I think if you're out there in the open, yeah, probably 10 degree wind chill. Oh, sometimes, sometimes the buildings, the air comes whipping around those buildings to whoop your ass.
That's also true. Those wind tunnels, man, they are no joke. Especially, you start getting lower Manhattan, forget about it. It's cold water coming off the Hudson. Oh, and don't remind me.
Right where our studios are. Oh man, late night after this show, walking out, tough. It gets bad. Well, Aaron Boone, he spoke earlier today. Aaron Boone, for some reason on WFAN, he said he is ready for the New York Yankees season to start.
They ended up winning. Listen to Aaron Boone. It's about that time, especially for a lot of guys that I feel like are ready to go.
Let's get up to the Bronx, a little cooler weather and hopefully get off to the right start. Yeah. Okay. Whatever.
Whatever. Hickey, we had his brother on and now we listening to him. Didn't Brett, I feel like the last, not today, but we spoke to Brett during the World Series, I believe. Didn't he say he has a son who's playing right? Oh, I don't. I feel like yes.
I want to say yes somewhere in the minors, right? Right, right, right. Something like that. I should have asked him. Family lineage, makes sense. Yeah.
How many more Boons can we have? I don't know. Well, I was going to say, why doesn't Brett put his son on the Mariners? But I forgot Brett is not LeBron. He can't do that.
It's not, just doesn't work that way. But maybe the Mariners would do it on their own because they've realized that's cheap young talent. That's right up the rally. Oh, they, Oh my goodness. Yeah. I realized when did Nintendo stop owning them? Like did Nintendo sell them? Who owns the Mariners? Oh, they got that Newton. Is it not the Allen family? No. Right. No, they got the, they got the blazers and the other Seattle teams. The Seahawks. Yeah. The blazers.
That's right. Who's this guy? Oh, well, I don't know.
John Stanton. Okay. Hmm.
Whatever. Uh, as of one of 17 minority owners of the team in April, he was appointed as a new CEO, uh, after Nintendo sold this majority. So wait a minute. The Mariners have a consortium of owners. Like what are we doing here? I don't know.
So they're made up of 17 minority owners. I don't, I don't know. Oh, he's the seat. He took control. He's the control person from Howard Lincoln.
Uh, Stan became responsible for the Mariners day-to-day operations. Uh, all right, whatever. I don't know that maybe this is why they don't spend money. I think we got our answer. Yeah. I don't know. This is sad.
Tell that to Justin Turner. Oh, right. Well, he was complaining. He's got, he's like, yo, they didn't spend no money. What are we doing? I don't want to stay.
It's like, it ain't spent no money. So I left. What a world.
And where is he now? Chicago, Chicago. Yeah. It's it.
How is baseball supposed to grow? Well, I guess the fans will, the fans who are diehards and some of these teams will just show up anyway. Right.
Is that how it goes? I guess like I was reading today, I saw that the Rockies still average about 30,000 fans a game, even though they have not been competitive for, I mean, what, a decade now that's, I mean, that's like, people always want to vilify the Dodgers because they spent so much. You're outlining the biggest problem in baseball.
You were looking at what, three quarters of the league, more than half the league, not even forget about not being competitive, not trying to be competitive. That's, that's a bigger issue than the Dodgers trying to win. Well, they put the money in their pocket, right?
Now it goes. Mariners not spending money. The pirate, like, oh, you can count on your hands, one, maybe two, the amount of teams trying actually to win games in 2025 in baseball.
It's sad. Well, listen, listen to the top. I'm going to give you the top five payrolls and then I'm going to give you the bottom five. The Dodgers lead the way with almost $400 million in salary. The New York Mets at 328.
You heard me correctly. The Dodgers lead the way at about 400. The Mets are 70 million behind them.
So you got three, you got 400 with the Dodgers. The Mets are 328. The Phillies are at 300. The Yankees are at 300. The Padres fifth are 260.
Let me take you back to the top team. The Dodgers are spending $400 million when it comes to payroll. The Pirates are spending 110. The Athletics, who are going to be playing up in Sacramento as they try to push their way out to Las Vegas, they're at 110. The Rays are at 100. The White Sox, I mean, who the hell are they paying?
We don't know a bunch of losers. They won today, beat the Angels eight to one. The White Sox are spending 87 mil. The Marlins are spending 82. So the team spending the least is spending 82 mil on payroll. And the team spending the most, the Dodgers at 400 million. Where and how does this make sense?
Where and how is this any type of good for baseball? And I guess it's not. I guess they're making money and they'll get a new TV deal.
I don't know where they'll end up. ESPN's relationship with Major League Baseball is not where it is. They're not renewing Sunday night baseball. It's just, it's just bad. But I guess when you can send the Dodgers and the Cubs out to Japan, then all is well in the world, right?
Just everything is a-okay. It's not. And the thing is, what internally at baseball is making anybody want to change anything? The owners are making money, whether they invested into the teams or not. The players are making money.
I know you got players who feel that they get robbed in free agency. But the money is being spent. The salaries are getting higher. And the fact that there is no no salary cap or there is no floor, how much you can't spend, how much you have to spend. The baseball players appreciate a free market because if Juan Soto was making seven hundred and sixty five million dollars, then the next star like a Vladimir Guerrero can come and say, well, I want six hundred.
And like the money is going up and up and up and up. But there's only a few teams that that can afford it. And if they don't, it's just like the the professional version of what we got in college is just, hey, I'm going to go to the biggest team in Major League Baseball, even though this is the major leagues.
Come on now. The Marlins seems like the Pirates. They're they're nothing but the I don't even want to call them the mid majors. They might as well be the minor leagues. As Shohei Ohtani hits a home run. What else is new?
Right. Shohei Ohtani hits a home run, as I said, that right on cue, his second home run of the season. And the Dodgers now take what is this, a five to two lead? I think it is here over the Tigers.
Hickey, the rich just get richer, huh? A five to three lead. That they do. What a world. Anyway, we're going to take a break. And I'm sure Dodgers will hit another home run during the break. And when we come back, I'm going to give you an update on what's going on in the sweet 16. Looks like Alabama is definitely going to advance.
And it looks like the Florida Gators and they're trying to keep their distance here against Maryland. I'll give you some scores on the other side. And then we'll talk about this pay disparity and how, I don't know, maybe NIL and the transfer portal is ruining the NCAA and J. Billis. He doesn't think so. We'll get into that on the other side.
We got more to do before we roll out. It's the J.R. Sport Brief Show, the Infinity Sports Network. You are listening to the J.R. Sport Brief.
It is the J.R. Sport Brief Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Man, we talked about the Dodgers and poof, Shohei Ohtani hits a home run. Dodgers lead Detroit five to three. Meanwhile, the sweet 16, let's get BYU the hell up on out of here. They're not, they haven't officially lost, but they're down by 20. It's about three minutes left. Ain't no comeback here. Alabama is going to advance.
Alabama leads BYU 103 to 83. It's about three and a half minutes left here in the game. Oh man, we can't get, Hickey can, I'm not going to say we need a mercy rule, but these are the worst games.
When you know the game is over and there's nothing to do but just wait for the bleeding to stop. They start throwing bums at, well, I don't want to call the young men bums. I'm doing too much.
Jeez, they're 18, 19 years old. That's why I retract. Did I retract it?
You did. They are also getting paid, so. Oh, so now I can call them bums because they're getting money? I mean, yeah, right.
Some of these NBA rookies are 19 years old. You can call them bums. Oh, I mean, they're professional, professionals. I feel like I want to leave the bum, the name, I want to leave the name calling to the pros. Okay. These, you got young men out there who are, they don't get burned. How about that?
Does that sound better? Getting some tread on those tires? Yeah, they're just getting a lot of run.
Like the, like the referee who stopped the game last week so a guy could get into the game. Remember that? Great moment. Great awareness. That was cool. Well, this guy needs to get into the game.
There's a wet spot. Eh, come here. Time out.
Get on the floor, kid. Yeah, we'll see. Yeah, but it looks like Alabama is going to advance. We just got to see what the final score looks like. And next up for Alabama will be the winner between Duke and Arizona.
That game, I'm slated to tip off in about 15 minutes or so. We'll see how things continue to roll. Meanwhile, Florida continues to extend its lead against Maryland. Kevin Willard, I'm sure he has his bags packed already to head out to Villanova. Florida currently leads 70 to 56. There's eight minutes to go in this game. Still plenty of time for Maryland to go on a run.
Uh, not looking all that likely. Meanwhile, the students on, uh, on Alabama, they're on the bench. They are laughing.
They are having themselves a good old time and I can't blame them. So what happens when you're out here and you're winning? And we had this, this conversation earlier on with, with John Crispin from Westwood, one college basketball analyst. He said that this game between Alabama and BYU, that it would be a shootout. It would be high scoring. And he's correct, except for BYU hasn't scored enough points to keep up with NATO squad out here in Alabama.
Now I will say this. One thing that John Crispin also was not a fan of was what we've seen in regards to the players moving around, players jumping around and, and what have you. He feels that that needs to get corralled and changed. Someone who doesn't agree that this is an issue, someone who doesn't agree that the transfer portal and player movement is an issue is Jay Billis. And he was online on social media and he said, Hey, listen, people stop the presses, cut it out with all the complaining. He said, NIL is not a problem. He says the transfer portal specifically is not ruining the tournament, even though people are transferring while the games are going on.
Listen to this. One trend, one data point does not make a trend. This is just one year. Last year, we had a ton of upheaval and chaos and upsets this year. Not as many, but, but remember Drake won a first round game, St. Mary's, Gonzaga won a first round game, New Mexico, Colorado state, and Colorado state was a bucket away from reaching the sweet 16. It took a last second shot by Maryland to keep them out of the sweet 16. McNeese won a first round game.
UC San Diego, a trendy upset pick against Michigan lost by a bucket in their game. And people also tend to forget or not emphasize that two years ago, Houston was in the American athletic conference. BYU was in the West coast conference. Arizona was in the PAC 12. It's been 23 years, 24 years since old miss was in a sweet 16. It's been 14 years since BYU was in a sweet 16. Uh, one data point does not make a trend. Yeah, but there's still no continuity. That's the thing.
He's correct about the past years, but it seems like it's, it's getting worse. How about this? I'll tell you about this whooping that Alabama is putting on BYU currently one Oh six to 86. There's less than two minutes to go here in this game. And speaking of transfers, there's a guy who used to play on Ohio.
Now at Alabama, Mark Sears, he has lit it up. Hickey. What, what the hell did he do on the stat line? 11 of 16 from three for 34 points.
Oh my goodness. Steph Curry ask. I was going to say, he thinks he's Steph Curry out here.
How crazy is that? And so what does this mean for the team? Like Alabama, what did you put here? Hickey, they've set the record for most threes made and attempted and NCAA tournament history. This is a historic game. 23 made threes for they're upsetting 50 or 51 three-point attempts in this game. So they're shooting a lot. They're making a lot shoot nearly 50% from the fee from three on over 50 attempts records. Never seen it before in an NCAA tournament game.
And this is too much, man. The fans in Alabama, they're having a good old time. They keep showing them in the stands right now. Everybody's cheering 111 points in a college basketball game is obnoxious. I mean, you can only do that by just knocking down threes.
There was no way in hell that BYU was going to keep up with this. Yeah. Hickey. Now they got the human victory cigars out there. Is that a bad thing to say about the students? No.
Right. I have never heard that. That is hilarious. What you never heard what human victory cigars. You've never heard that at all. Never.
That's I love that. Oh, that's a cliche. Come on. I don't know. I don't know.
Just around. I just feel like it's an old sports cliche. Come on now. Wow. That's an old one.
Human victory cigars. It's a nice way to say the guys don't get a lot of playing time around. I don't.
Yeah. I don't know the origin. Here we go.
I googled it for you. An American professional basketball. A human victory cigar refers to a player who's brought into the game primarily when the outcome is already assured. Often a player who is not a key contributor but is known for their presence. Sometimes even a draft bust or veteran player who is not a star. Why on the team?
I bring good presence. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know.
I don't know the origin. Here we got some examples. You ready for this?
Sure. And they got NBA examples. Darko Milicic. Hashim Tabit. Jeremy Lin. Brian Cardinal. I forgot about that guy. Wow. Yeah.
I forgot about them. I don't know the origin. That's a good question. It was so common. I don't know.
I've heard it forever. Is that Red Auerbach as he's lighting up his own victory cigar? Here we go. I don't know. I don't know.
I have no idea. It's a red Auerbach tradition of lighting a cigar after victory. There you go. So do you think the coach says like, yeah, I'm a coach and you know, it's like, all right, victory cigar.
I think the guys know who he's talking about. No, you can't. As a coach, you can't say that. Come on. All right. Light him up, crew. You're going. And this guy, some kid just runs off the end of the bench. Come on. Rips his sweats off. He's ready to go. Oh my God.
I mean, it's, you know, there's a difference in the bill, especially at the college level. You know, when they start putting certain guys out there onto the court, you start going, Oh, okay. All right. All right. Yeah.
There's a difference between what this guy looks like in that guy. So it all starts to make sense as we got a final. Yeah. Alabama awaits the winner between Arizona and Duke. Alabama wins 113 to 88. Gators are still out here trying to roll over Maryland and Hickey on a side note. Speaking of the Gators, did you see the defensive lineman for the Gators? This guy's like six, four, 464 pounds. Did you see that dude? Oh, I have seen him in games.
Oh my God. He's and he's only like a sophomore, right? He's pretty young. He's huge. Here he is. Desmond Watson.
Yes. He plays for the Florida Gators. He is six, six, 464 pounds. During the Gators pro day, this man run, he ran a four seven, a 40 yard dash. He has a 25 inch vertical jump. He is six, six, 464 pounds. If and when he plays in the NFL, somebody is going to draft him. He would be the heaviest player in NFL history.
464. A four seven, 40 yard that what? Correct me if I'm wrong. Is it wouldn't there be like a slow ass tight end, like a blocking tight end who would run that fast? Am I out of range on that one? No, that feels like it's humanly impossible. I mean, I get it.
Once you get, you know, a heavy object in motion, it stays in motion for a second. He might go first round. Someone's going to see that. That's what Jerry Jones might see. That's my guy. I'd love to. I'd love to see it.
I'm here for a good show. Why not? Why can't we get a giant guy and if he does not work out in the NFL, if they go, oh, well, now he's too fat or he's too slow in actual game action, because we know what you can do in a combine isn't. But still, he got a 25 inch vertical leap at 464. What?
That's almost 500 pounds. He got a 25. How come Jokic can't jump? OK, what gives? Was it he can't jump or just doesn't want to jump? He probably doesn't want to jump. You know, to be honest, does he need to jump? That's probably more important.
I don't think so. I don't think he needs to. And that builds into I don't think he wants to. I don't I don't need to jump.
I don't want to jump. So why bother some of these passes that he's making? I saw a highlight reel of Jokic making these Magic Johnson-esque passes. And I'm just like, what what world are we living in right now? See the one from last night?
Oh, what do you do? Go by like kind of spin behind his head over his shoulder. It was like a Magic Johnson-esque pass.
It was insane. Yeah. And he does it all.
Well, the passes are fast, but his body moves in slow motion. This is why he makes no sense. He's this you can't stop it.
It's just it's embarrassing because you can't stop anything that he does. I knew I knew I knew who he was. I was like, of course I knew who he was.
I knew everything I needed to see. Hickey, when he was out there embarrassing Anthony Davis, I'm like, this is one of the premier big man defenders in the league. All Anthony Davis has to put his long ass arms up in the air. Anthony Davis could move left or right. He's more of an athlete than Nikola Jokic.
And Nikola Jokic was embarrassing him everywhere on the basketball court. It was just it was like, yeah, this guy's unstoppable. And like you said, in slow motion, he's not doing with just peak athleticism or just, you know, a gift from God in terms of body or ability.
It's fundamentals, just passing. It's incredible. It's I like I think it's a lot of fun to watch. If I could play basketball, I'd play it like Jokic and low, low energy. I can't even say low energy.
It's just like low effort and just getting the job done. It's like, oh, you're eight feet tall. You're in front of me. Well, bang, I'm going to shoot the ball from my head is still going to go in.
I'm not going to count down on the clock till hit zero so I can get the hell out of here. Yeah. Yeah. He just is the most nonchalant star ever. It's just like, yeah, it's like I show up, I play ball. I leave. What do you want from me? Where's my horse? Can I go to the track now, please? You know, he facetimes his horses when he can, right?
Half time, probably. He's out here, facetiming his horses. OK, this is. Man, this is. Hey, Kevin Willard is going to have plenty of time to he could take up horse racing in Pennsylvania.
Florida is beating Maryland. You know what? Hey, Marco Balletti, I'll let you do this, OK? You sure? And I'm just saying I'm looking at Sad Angel Reese. She looks real sad watching her brother play. That's it? No, she looks sad.
I've never seen I've never seen her. So I was going to tie it into the Nicola Jokic and looking lazy, but not actually getting the job done on the court, but I wasn't going to go there. So I was trying to be nice.
And then you led me right into it. So, no, she's working on her layups. Come on now.
Yeah. Lisa Leslie was here yesterday. Lisa said that she's Angel Reese 2.0. All she has to do is work on the offense.
Come on, Marco. That's what Lisa Leslie said. The offense. The layup line is what she needs to work on.
Yes, the offense. Lisa said that's easy to do. Are you going to argue with Lisa Leslie?
What, layups? No, she's right. They are easy to do. That's the problem. Oh, she is. Correcting them is easy so that Lisa is going to help her. Okay. Is it form?
I don't know. Do you want you want us to call Lisa back? Lisa Lisa said like Iverson, we're not talking about jump shots. We're talking about foul shots. Talk about layups. These are layups.
It's not about form. Lisa said it's easy to correct. All right. All right. That's what Lisa Leslie said. Okay.
Come on. What does Angel Reese say? You think? I think she says that.
Like Doc Rivers, she got to get credit for getting the rebound and putting it back up. Oh, boy. I don't know. I mean, Lisa said this. I was surprised. Lisa said this to her face on a podcast. Remember, she said that.
I'm like, whoa, ouch. Like nobody. I don't care who you are.
Nobody wants to be publicly criticized that type of way, right? Like what? You know, you can't make a layup, but I can help you. This can get fixed. Don't worry. Don't worry. Oh, yeah.
Market made itself bad. Damn, that's rough. All right. It's like, I don't know, like I came allows you. God bless.
He's still alive. But could you imagine it? Well, he don't want to do none of this crap. That's why I like him. Could you imagine a chemo large one sitting down with, I don't know, prom shack on a podcast going, listen, brother, listen, brother, I can help you with the free throws.
It's very easy. I work with you. Shack would be embarrassed. You may start cursing out a king like, man, I don't need your help with free throws a hundred percent like nobody at the top of their profession. And Angel Reese, regardless of offensive game, she is one of the best basketball players on the women's side. Double double machine. OK, a lot of missed shots and rebounds.
Nobody wants to be criticized for this. One of the simplest things. Layups. That's like the first. Correct me if that's the first thing you learn in basketball is how to hit a layup. Like put the ball off the backboard and put in a net easy. I don't think. Well, she played at a high level in college and I don't know what Angel Reese did in high school in Maryland. I assume good, right? Come on.
So it's tough anyway. It's the JR Sport Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. When we come back to share, I'm going to share a few things that took place this day in sports history. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief.
It is the JR Sport Brief show on the Infinity Sports Network. Man, we got quite a few things that that just ended all at the same damn time. We just heard from Marco Belletti, Alabama, knocking off BYU 113 to 88. The most three point pointers ever made and attempted in the March Madness tournament at the NCAA tournament. A matter of fact, Mark Sears, he went absolutely nuts tonight. This man had 34 points. This man went out there and shot 10 of 16 from three point land. Let's listen to this courtesy of Westwood One. This is him knocking down the three to give Alabama a 177 lead. Listen. And now a pass to the outside, stolen by Sears.
Here comes Alou. Amore makes the catch, throws back to Sears. Why not another three? There you go. 23 made three pointers. The NCAA record continues to grow.
Mark Sears has 10 of them. 100 points for Alabama. Well, we got another score that just went final. The Gators have eliminated the Maryland Terps. The final score there, 87 to 71. We all saw Derek Queen hit that big game winner against Colorado State on Sunday tonight in a loss. He had 27 points. I'm pretty sure Kevin Woolard will be asked a whole lot of questions after this game about his future and where he goes. There was a lot of tension paid upon Walter Clayton Jr. and what he would do for the Florida Gators. He didn't have the greatest shooting night, ended with 13 points, but they had one, two, three, four, five, six players in double digits for the Florida Gators.
That is certainly, certainly their strength. We'll keep you up to date on everything as it goes on. The Florida Gators await the winner of tonight's game between Texas Tech and Arkansas. They get going in about 30 minutes from now.
On this show, it's time to do something else. It's time to take a look at something that took place this day in sports history. It is the JR Sport Reshow on the Infinity Sports Network and today is March 27, 2025. We got a lot of madness going on in the Sweet 16, but on March 27, 2011, VCU knocked off Kansas to make the Final Four. VCU beat number one Kansas, 71 to 61, to head to the Final Four in Houston.
I remember because I was there. I want you to listen to this final call. VCU knocking everybody off, stunning the world, beating Kansas, courtesy of CBS. Yeah, that's Chaka Smart leading the way. And then he left for the money not too long after.
But here's the point. VCU, they went to the Final Four. They then got beat by Butler and then Butler got beat by UConn. Yeah, I was in that Final Four in Houston out at the NRG Stadium they had it at. Yeah, that was a nice Final Four.
I remember that. I like Houston. I love Houston. I go to Houston all the time.
Dangerous place, for me at least, not dangerous as in crime, but for me, I stay out of Houston. Anyway, that's something that took place this day in sports history. So there you have it.
I can't go out here recreating history. I did tell you that there was something else that just went final. The Dodgers won yet another baseball game. They won their home opener here in Los Angeles. We know they won two games against the Cubs in Japan. The Dodgers end up winning five to four. Shohei Ohtani cracks a home run. And yeah, we might as well get used to the Dodgers just winning and winning and winning and winning like they did last year.
Brett Boone joined us earlier in the show. He thinks the same thing, that they just going to keep on winning and winning and winning unless somebody gets hurt. So a lot of talk today about people talking too much. Dan Hurley admits that he probably needs to tone it down and change. Stephen A. Smith made a mistake, said something deplorable, I think today, evoking Kobe Bryant's memorial and LeBron James not attending to try to chop him down, ultimately to admit to making a mistake that he was there and that he should not have even brought it up.
So we got a lot of people just talking crap. Well, today, unfortunately, Derek Jeter was scheduled to be on Pat McAfee like LeBron was two days ago or yesterday. Derek Jeter wasn't allowed to join the show. Listen to this. Pat McAfee said that Jeter wasn't allowed. Listen. That's bad news.
Oh, no. Their captain Derek Jeter was supposed to come on the show today. We marketed it. And we said we don't like doing that. Good reason. Because if we come out and say Derek Jeter's coming on the show on an opening day and everybody goes, wow, that is so cool that that's happening.
Myself included. Derek Jeter's not on the show today. Hey. What? Not Derek Jeter's fault.
Actually got a personal phone call from Derek Jeter. There's broadcast stuff. You know, networks are doing the thing.
I'm not happy about it. Yeah. Derek Jeter works for Fox, right?
I guess Fox didn't want him on ESPN. Damn. You thought Derek Jeter was a boss. Derek Jeter could just wake up and do whatever he wants to do.
I guess not. What a world. Anyway, we've had one hell of a show. Thank you to super producer and host Ryan Hickey.
I'm going to give a big thank you to Brett Boone for coming through to join us to talk about opening day here for Major League Baseball, the one that didn't take place in Japan. Thank you to John Crispin, college basketball analyst for Westwood One for coming through to fill us in on all the action that we have seen and will see in the Sweet 16. We got two games that are done. And we got more to go. Got two more games tonight, Arizona and Duke. We got Arkansas, Texas Tech. We got four more games tomorrow. Congratulations to Florida and Alabama for advancing. I'll be back with you tomorrow. Six p.m. Eastern, three Pacific. I appreciate you for listening to the JR Sport Show. It is now a wrap. Don't move here on the Infinity Sports Network because Bart Winkler is coming up next. Thank you for listening and thank you to Ryan.
