It is! The JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. Thank you so much to everybody tuned in and locked in all over North America, whether you happen to be in Toronto, Canada. You could be here in Atlanta, Georgia with me. You could be in New York City with our super producer and host Ryan Hickey. You could be in, I don't know, if you were listening last hour, I don't know where that last guy was. What the hell?
Already? Hickey, wait, wait, stop the music. This guy's hurt. Another guy is hurt? Zion Williamson is out with an illness?
What, he had bad seafood? What is that about? Oh my God. The NBA is investigating Joel Embiid. Well, they're investigating the 76ers. They're thinking about it because he ain't playing. And now Zion is out with an illness? Come on.
At least it's not his hamstring. You know what? Let's, if we can, let's get back to the music.
I'll calm down a little bit. There we go. It is the music.
Common Jay-Z music. Anyway, this show gets started every weekday. It's 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. You can listen on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate, Sirius XM158. You got a smart speaker, ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. You can call me up. Like I was saying, like the last guy who called us, I think his name was Mark in Tampa. He called me on one of those, those Flintstones phones. Fred Flintstone used to roll up and pick up the horn.
And I didn't know what the hell that last guy said. But if you want to call me and your phone works, you can do it. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. Those, those phones that the Flintstones had, they were, they were pretty innovative. Picky, the Flintstones, they could use a phone, but Joel Embiid can't play basketball. Explain it. Modern medicine, the Flintstone, Fred Flintstone could drive a car with his bare feet. He could pick up a phone and make a call on a horn or a shell.
And Joel Embiid can't play basketball. I wish I had an explanation for it. Sometimes, what is it they say? Reality is stranger than fiction? Oh my God. You can't make this stuff up.
And look at this. They got this brand new, all these hurt ass guys. Now Kawhi Leonard is gonna be out for weeks.
Just gave him a contract extension. You know what? I love basketball.
I do. These deals that they, they got to hand out because they got to split the money. It's stupid. It's just like the NFL and I love the NFL, but these deals that they hand out to these quarterbacks who are losers are stupid. Like at what point in time do people just go, hey, and I'm not, I'm not against the players making money.
I'm not one of these people who's going to sit around. They make too much money to throw a ball. They make too much money to shoot a ball. Well, they making this money because you're watching it. If you don't want them to make the money, they don't watch. The money is there.
It's to be split. Nobody will ever tell you that you're making too much money, right? Unless you're a crook. And at that point you're stealing.
These guys aren't stealing. The money is there because people watch this as entertainment. It's called eyeballs.
If the eyeballs are there, they make money, but the results don't match. That's why someone like Joel Embiid is currently, you know, the Sixers are being investigated potentially because of his injury management. Are the Sixers holding him out of games where he is healthy enough to play?
Not because he's injured or because he's hurt. That's a problem. That ain't fair. That ain't cool. And when it comes to buying tickets to anything, it's always buyer beware.
Okay. If you're going to look, maybe you went to go see the Joker a couple of weeks ago. I heard that movie sucked. Had a bunch of makeup freaks running around singing songs when it should have been about Batman. We know Batman's not in the movie, not even in the first one, but the first one was great. But the second one was awful. And if you spent your hard earned money to go see the Joker to file a ado or file a for two and it sucked, you don't get that money back. You just have to chalk up the L $16 down the drain, $32 down the drain, 40 bucks down the drain. If you went with a date, the date probably never wanted to see you again.
Took him to a terrible experience. You don't walk up to the counter and say, I want my money back. Or maybe you do.
And if you do, there's something wrong with you. If you're going to buy a ticket to an NBA game and you understand the rash of injuries that are going on, that's your fault. Nobody's making you buy a ticket to the Sixers game, but it's a slap in the face to the fans who buy season tickets and expect to see a Joel MB. Yeah, we know he's always hurt, but you've now taken it to another level when you say, Hey, yeah, I ain't playing in back to backs. Yeah.
I'm not going to play the first bunch of games. Yo big ass played in the Olympics. You just got a big old contract extension that takes you through 2027.
This man is clocking almost half a billion dollars in basketball contracts. The least that your big ass can do is show up and work. Even if you got to play 20 minutes a game, come on Lazy ass NBA instituted these new rules trying to kind of stop this. They should.
It's pathetic. And now Zion Williamson is out with an illness. They open up this stupid new Intuit dome in Englewood. I'm sure it's a very nice arena.
Looks nice from the outside. Balls are playing the pelicans. Lonzo Ball is going to be playing basketball. Zion is not illness. Hickey. What is he ill?
What are you? Was he hanging out with that lady again? Oh, oh boy. Maybe. I don't know. That's a different type of illness. Yeah.
I can get why you're not playing because of that. Yeah. Oh my God. Well, well, I don't, that, that story was so sloppy. I don't even remember. Did no, she was mad that she wasn't pregnant. Is that what it is? Is that, was that her problem? Yeah. Yeah.
So she just really went to town on him. Okay. Yeah. She was a, uh, a star, a special star.
I remember that. So there's no Joel Embiid. There's no Paul George. At least he has a legitimate injury, but that's not unusual for him.
Hyper-extended knee. There's no Zion due to illness. He couldn't give this guy IV.
Hickey. What is he on? He's on the back room.
Is he on the, the John? Like this is anyway, welcome to the NBA 2024. Bronnie James got more minutes. Bronnie James is getting more burn than Kawhi Leonard and Joel Embiid. And now Zion Williamson. Welcome to the NBA.
Anyway. Hey, let's move to the NFL. We got a bunch of guys who are actually coming back. How about this Hassan Reddick? He showed up to work today for the New York jets.
Yeah. The New York jets, they did all that huffing and puffing and we ain't doing this and we ain't doing that. And he wants a new contract and CAA fires him and any signs with Drew Rosen house. And then he finally has a deal. He was at work today, New York jets, by the way, it appears that they're going to try to waive his $12 million in fines that the NFL has says is not supposed to be waived.
I don't know. I know the jets are run by Woody Johnson from the Johnson and Johnson company, the bandaid people, but you would think the New York jets are run by, you know, hustlers on canal street. Like we're just going to waive the $12 million. Give that money to me. I'll take a fraction of it and do a better job than Woody Johnson.
Anyway, Hassan Reddick. This man was kind of moseying along on the grass, the New York jets field, and he was happy to be back breathing that fresh New Jersey air. Sup everybody. Feel good to be back on the turf.
Hope we can make something happen. Hickey sounds so happy, right? He sounds so happy. Oh, thrilled.
I mean, he was speechless essentially how happy he was. Yeah. Just, just moseying along on that grass, getting ready to join a miserable New York jets team, getting ready to go.
I don't know what 10 and O the rest of the way. So they can, uh, you know, win a super bowl. Yeah. Look at that real happy man.
Hassan Reddick, I guess life is good when they say, Oh no, no, just, just keep your $12 million that he was probably never really in danger of losing that. Come on, come on now. He's not the only guy back. How about this to a Tonga below? We heard from him yesterday.
Okay. The man who's unfortunately suffered what four documented concussions just documented the to a Tonga below. It looks like he's going to be back this weekend for the dolphins to a Tonga below us spoke to the media. He says, I ain't wearing no guardian cap. I don't need extra protection for my damaged brain.
It's not that important. And so we might see to a getting a start against Arizona on Sunday. You want to know who's happy about his return?
Tyreek Hill. Listen to this. We're back, baby. Strike up the band. We're back, baby.
Start me this week, baby. Let's go. Thank you. I like it. Everybody's so happy. Tyreek. I like the enthusiasm. I hope this stays because fortunately we have seen the problem being not to a getting on the field, staying on the field. Yeah.
Dolphins are two and four. Yeah. Happy NFL players is good, right? Hassan Redick is happy.
Tyreek Hill is happy. But you know, life is all about balance. Sorry, folks. Now I have to, uh, gotta, gotta bring you down just a little bit.
Unfortunately, it's to a Tonga below. He might be returning. I got to tell you about a quarterback who might not be around because he is scheduled to be week for week. This is the man leading the charge for NFL rookie of the year. His name is Jayden Daniels. He got cracked in the ribs.
We learned yesterday that he is now day to day, week to week. They got the Chicago bears up next. This is a matchup that people want to see. You got Caleb Williams, you got Jayden Daniels. You want to see this battle.
You want to see who comes out on top, right? Dan Quinn said, we don't care. You guys have all been around Jayden and uh, like anybody, anywhere, anytime is really the mindset for him. Like I think at his core, Sam, that's one of the things I really admire about him is just like his readiness, his wanting to go prove it.
So, um, no, much like we talked about, um, Lamar a few weeks ago, you know, like they're not playing against one another. So like it's about him and the readiness to get ready and and help our team. Ultimately, that's why so many of his teammates really gravitate towards him. They know how much he puts it in and goes for it. And that's why he's seen as one of the great teammates around here. Yeah, everybody wants to see him.
I think he's going to play. It's his ribs. Don't give him one of those shots and go get him. Welcome to the NFL. Man.
Every time they talk about giving them NFL players, some shots in the ribs. Oh my God. Hickey, I don't think there's enough numbing cream on earth. None. You know where my brain goes? What?
Tyrod Taylor. Oh, well he got that. He got that needle in the lung, huh? Make sure if you're going to get that shot by the ribs, that the damn doctor knows what he's doing. How you, how you get a needle? I'm supposed to put this in your ribs. I put it in your lung. Oh, Oh, Oh my God.
How big is that? I don't think about it. This is why I couldn't be an NFL player.
I could not do that. They settled, right? He settled, they, he sued and he got money, right? I hope.
Yeah, I forget exactly. But I, he better and better be a large, some money. How bad that doctor screwed up. How bad that doctor screwed up. How much money would you need to take a needle in the lung?
Oh, I mean. How much money? I'm a wimp. I don't think I could, I don't think there's, I mean, a hundred million dollars. I'd do it. A hundred?
What'd you do it for? Oh man. And knowing that I'd be okay. Well, I don't think you can guarantee that. Oh man.
I'd suck it up for, I think I'd suck it up for a quarter mil. Really? Yeah.
Yeah. Two 50. Two, two 50. There's a chance you die.
200. No. It's just a little jab in the lung.
Oh, I mean that does. Okay. A little jab jab in the lung though, right? Yeah.
Just a little poke in the lung. No biggie. Yeah. I got two. I got two. I got two.
Oh, modern technology. Look, if Joel Embiid can run if Joel Embiid can run around as a, I don't know, the half-assed basketball player, he can't, I can take a, a punctured lung. I'd be okay. I guess he was back to work relatively soon, right? I mean, I know Herbert kept the job, but I think he's back as a backup, like kind of soon. He's still in the NFL, right? That he is. It's not impacted him since. Yup. He's fine. It's good.
He makes a whole, he makes a whole lot more than a quarter. So good for him. Congratulate. Good luck to Jaden.
I think he will play against the Bears. I'm looking forward to that. That's, that's, that's good. And then we had another trade today, by the way. I can't even call this a trade. Devin White was dumped by the Philadelphia Eagles. They didn't want him. Nicobe Dean, a Georgia boy, Georgia Bulldog took his job. And so Devin White, who used to be a pro bowl and all of this, Super Bowl champion for the Buccaneers. He is now signed to the Texans. They've had so many injuries with the linebackers and they're hoping that he could return to his pro bowl form. CJ Stroud, a quarterback, never jabbed in his lung.
Not that I know. He says, picking up a linebacker, Devin White from the Bucks, cause he ain't played for the Eagles. He said, this is great. He's a great player, great addition, you know, so shout out to Nick for, you know, doing his thing once again. But yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm in love with that, with that choice that Nick made and, you know, I think he'd be a great addition to the defense.
Hey, he's talking about the, Nick Asario, talking about the GM, the boss man. Yeah, good for the Texans. See, we had the end things on a high note, right? Nobody getting jabbed in the lung, no quarterbacks in a car accident. Good luck to Andy Dalton in the spring thumb.
We had things on a high note here. It's the JR sport re-show on the infinity sports network. We're going to continue riding a high because when we come back on the other side of the break, we're going to have a conversation with someone who covers a six and old football team that has dealt with its share of injuries, but they likely have just gotten better. We're going to talk about the Kansas city chiefs with Matt Derrick of the chiefs digest. He's coming through on the other side of the break is the JR sport re-show on the infinity sports network.
Don't move. You're listening to the JR sport brief. It is the JR sport re-show here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network. Oh yeah, Tony Gonzalez, the chiefs legend. It's time to talk about the current Kansas city chiefs, because earlier today we learned that they're in the works working on a big old tree, bringing in multiple time pro bowler Deandre Hopkins to help ease some of their ills at the wide receiver position. So talk about these undefeated chiefs, how Hopkins fits in, how much of his salary gets picked up, what happens next for this team trying to three-peat. Joining us right now is Matt Derrick of the chiefs digest. Matt, how are you? I am doing well. I can do without, you know, any more 6 a.m. news breaks of trades in the works, but a little too early for a beat writer. But other than that, we're hanging in fine.
I hear that. I know a lot of fans, they were actually thrilled this morning when the news came down the pipe. How does Deandre Hopkins fit into this team? We know the talent, we know the age.
How do you perceive this? Yeah, I mean, this offense has been blowing through ex-receivers. I mean, just receivers with some thighs that can play on the outside, specifically just opposite Travis Kelce and be able to play off of him. That was the role for Hollywood Brown.
He goes down. Rashee Rice really, you know, was originally probably going to be more of a slot guy. They slide him into that ex-role and that didn't work out. I mean, he gets hurt. So then, you know, Drew Drew Smith Schuster has a great game, 130 yards, looks like problem solved.
Then the hamstring flares up. Obviously, this is already a receiver room that's been depleted by injuries, but they need a big target. Mahomes needs somebody that he can trust, someone that he can go to. This is not going to be Travis Kelce getting double and triple-teamed the entire time. And hey, you know, I think it's going to be a little while before D-Hop picks up the entire offense, but by all accounts, you know, he's an incredibly sharp football man. He's going to be an incredibly sharp football mind.
Justin Reid talked to us today and just couldn't stop gushing about just how smart of a football player it is as a football IQ. So you got to feel at least comfortable that he's going to be able to pick up elements of the offense to be able to make a contribution immediately. But his style of receivers, this team needs it badly right now. Well, when you think about Kareem Hunt coming in, replacing Pacheco, you think about DeAndre Hopkins essentially trying to take up some of the targets from Rasheed Rice. How do you think this offense is going to progress being that they're pretty much middle of the road like they were last year? Yeah, that's been the perplexing thing is just that, you know, you got Patrick Mahomes and you feel like that the offense should be turned right along.
But, you know, they have some difficulties. They have a left tackle spot that's not completely secured down yet. You know, Donovan Smith was a good stop gap last year, but they've got a rookie and a second year player in Kingsley Suamadia and Wanya Morris that have been going through there. And I don't think there's any doubt. I mean, Patrick Mahomes has probably had one eye on the protection there in the back of his head and trying to look downfield at the same time. And I mean, I will say, I think that Mahomes has been showing a different side of himself the last couple of games, showing more comfort as far as just making more authoritative throws. And the turnovers are reducing a little bit.
I think there's signs that things are picking up. But like you said, I mean, when you've got one guy that you can trust to throw the football to and Travis Kelce because everybody else is hurt, he's going to get double and triple teamed. And then you need somebody who can win matchups. And right now, nobody has been doing that. So that's where D-Hop comes in.
But you're right. I mean, the addition of Kareem Hunt has been huge, too, because obviously this Chiefs team faces a lot of light boxes. And Kareem has been proving that, hey, he can he can get two yards in a cloud of decimals, so pretty much any play.
He still has at least that in his bag of tricks. Matt, Derek is joining us, covers the Chiefs for the Chiefs Digest. You mentioned Patrick Mahomes and some of the issues around him. You know, football is such a crazy sport, especially sometimes statistically. The fact that Mahomes has six touchdowns to eight interceptions, people are looking like he's having such an awful, terrible year.
I still see the same guy working with less weapons with an undefeated record. What are your thoughts on what the numbers look like versus what's taking place on the field? Yeah, that's one of the remarkable things about Mahomes is that and I think you can say that about a lot of the superstars on this Chiefs team, he really don't care about the personal numbers that much.
You'll hear Chris Jones joking about sacks and sometimes it's half joking because he definitely wants to go to the Hall of Fame one day and he'd like to be defensive player of the year this year. But Mahomes and Chelsea and these guys, they only care about one number and it's wins. So Mahomes really doesn't care about his own stat line as long as the team is winning. And you've certainly seen that because, you know, I don't think that he has been down or anything, you know, regarding his numbers.
He doesn't seem to be in a funk or anything of that nature. You know, he talked about how last year was harder for him, that it wasn't maybe as much fun just because the offense was struggling. But they also weren't winning at the same clip that they were used to during the regular season. This year, they were 6-0, so there's not like any desperation around this team of, you know, how does the offense fix itself because they're completely convinced that once everything gels, once they figure out the left tackle situation, once this receiver group gets some more experience and gets more comfortable, they feel like that just like last year. I mean, if it takes until January before they find fifth gear, they have absolute complete confidence that they're going to do it. So the fact that they're kind of muddling along right now is zero concern to this team because they still feel like they can throw that gear on when they need to. Matt, you mentioned Chris Jones, who no longer, he can no longer use the name Stone Cold.
I think the bald-headed guy came after him, right? You know, I think Chris has always even preferred probably the CEO of SAC Nation instead, but, you know, fans are calling whatever they want to call him. I hear that. Well, we know that that defense that he helps lead, last year they came in second. It's still early enough in the season right now. They're fifth, still one of the best defenses in sports. How did they transform this defense, letting go some of the veterans and trades and Tyreek Hill being gone to bring in some new talents?
Yeah, you know, you leave with Jarius Snead and obviously he was a huge part of that defense, but you look at every single level and this team has leaders and big-time performers. I mean, obviously Chris Jones is not just one of the best at his position, but one of the best players in football. And honestly, even though the defensive linemen, whether it's the tackles or ends, they're measured by SACs, but I will tell you from watching him week in and week out, I think this might be the best football that Chris Jones has ever played.
I mean, just he gets the focal attention of the other defenses each and every week, and yet he just absolutely continually destroys offensive lines week in and week out. You talk about the Chiefs' run defense in particular, which has been so good. They haven't given up more than 58 yards to a team's best running back this year, held Derrick Henry to I think 45 yards in week one. Their run defense has been ridiculous, and that starts with Chris Jones in the middle.
It continues up the middle with Nick Bolton at linebacker. When you've got Justin Reed at safety, if and when a running back gets to that next level, you're good there. And Chris Jones, when I asked him about this last week, he made a point to point to Trent McDuffie, Jalen Watson, Tamari Conner, the corners that play on the outside and the slot, because they're all tough, hard-nosed tacklers too. McDuffie in particular is not afraid to get in there and try to hit a ball carrier and pop the ball loose.
He's had quite a few forced fumbles in his career. Jalen Watson, just as tough as it seems like Lageria Snead was. Now, they're going to have to play without him for a while, but Jalari Conner has got that same attitude as well.
So the fact that they've got guys at every single level of the defense that plays hard and plays tough and tackles, I think that's a big part of why this defense seems to work. Matt, Derrick is joining us here on the JR Sport Reshow beat writer at chiefsdigest.com. With the addition of DeAndre Hopkins, we've seen what Xavier Worthy can do as he still figures things out. What do you expect to see from him? He was basically gifted to the Kansas City Chiefs by the Buffalo Bills. What should we expect from him moving towards the second half of the season?
Yeah, I think there's two things that they in particular would like. One would be obviously to be able to connect more on the deep ball. They've taken a few shots, they've had a couple of hits, not as many shots downfield as they would like to take and not as many connections. Mahomes overthrew him last week. A couple of weeks ago, he under-threw him. But we have seen, especially the last couple of games, Mahomes has not been afraid to just absolutely gear up and throw the ball as hard and as far as you possibly can because he realizes he can throw the ball 60 yards and Worthy can go get it. So I think you're going to see some of those in the second half of the season when they're able to set some teams up and take some shots downfield.
I'm not sure there's a single defensive back in the league that can keep up with Xavier Worthy. So he can be open 60 yards downfield on any particular play when he wants to. But they also would love to be able to get him more involved in the short passing game, intermediate passing game. If they can find him and get him more in rhythm, getting the ball in space, he's a real mismatch. It's tough to get him down once he's getting to full speed in the middle of the field and you certainly have seen them use him on some of their patented reverses and jet sweeps.
They've been taking advantage of them like that, but they would love to be able to get the ball to him beyond the line of scrimmage in space and see what he can do. Oh man, I found it, I don't want to say comical, but the fact that Rasheed Rice went down and there was no confirmation seemed to be a good thing. And there were so many kind of conversations bandied about about a potential return at the end of the year and I kind of scoffed at that.
What are your thoughts? He's done, we won't see him this year, right? Is that safe to assume?
Yeah, it's definitely safe to assume. The only really good news about it was that, you know, it wasn't an ACL tear. That was what, you know, would you normally fan here's an ACL, you instantly know that's for the season.
These people will see you next year. In this case, either the ACL was intact and it was the LCL, which is a lot more uncommon ligament that gets that can get torn up in there, but what they weren't sure of until they did the surgery was just how much more damage was in there and it was more on the worst case scenario side. So, you know, Andy Reid told us that it's not an ACL, but it's going to be time your rehab lies similar to an ACL. So I'm not expecting to see Rasheed Rice back, you know, probably off at Bowfield until training camp and even then he might not be a hundred percent at the beginning of training camp.
Matt, final question for you. This is a team looking to make history. The Kansas City Chiefs are. Are we looking at a three-peat? Is that the most likely outcome given what we've seen in the NFL so far?
I think it's definitely a plurality. I think you got to make them the favorite. I can't tell you that, you know, there's a 50 percent chance or better because I think there's still a lot of teams in the NFL that are really good. The Ravens are playing better football than they did in week one when these two teams played, but I felt after watching that week one game, I thought these are the two best teams in the AFC. So I think we're going to see them again in January and we'll see if the Ravens can finally get past them. And I think there's a couple of good teams in the NFC. Right now, I mean, I think it's going to be a Chiefs-Lions Super Bowl and I think that could be a really good matchup.
Oh, absolutely. Sign me up for it. We got a lot of great teams, a lot of teams looking to get over the hump and also in the process knock the Chiefs off the top of the mountain. Matt, where can people follow you and all of your work with the Chiefs Digest? If you go to Chiefs Digest, you can go from there to all the articles, everything on our YouTube channel, the Chiefs Digest as well.
Also, social media. So you just go to chiefsdigest.com, you'll get it all there. Hey, Matt, great conversation. You enjoy the ride. OK, we'll catch you down the line. I appreciate it.
Sounds great, my friend. Take care. You as well.
That is Matt Derek of the chiefsdigest.com. Go ahead and check it out. Great conversation.
A great insight. Would anybody be shocked if we saw the Lions and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl? I think not.
I think not. I think if there's one thing that the Lions are going to try to figure out that they've improved upon from last year is the defense. And then we all know about the aggressiveness of Dan Campbell. How is he going to. Before, we know he's going to be aggressive.
I can answer that question by myself. We know what Dan Campbell is going to do. His ass is going to gamble. Let's see what the defense continues to do with an old Aiden Hutchinson. Is that going to come back to bite them like he's a game breaker?
He's the type of individual who can get you to a championship game and can own the game because he is constantly in someone like Patrick Mahomes face. They will be perfectly fine in the regular season. Let's see how they gear up for the postseason. It's the J.R. sport we show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network.
We're going to take a break when we come back on the other side. And speaking of championships, I was asked this question last hour. Someone asked me about the New York Yankees and the Dodgers. Who do I believe is going to come out on top in winning the commissioners trophy? We'll talk about it. I'll give you a little bit of a prediction. I was going to save it until tomorrow, but we'll talk about it because Brian Cashman, the GM of the New York Yankees, he's still mad at the Astros.
I'm like, get over it. We'll talk about that. The top of the hour. I'm going to give you a top six list of father son combos in the world of sports. What are some of the best combos that we've ever seen? And speaking of championships, the Celtics, well, they won theirs back in June and they smashed the Knicks last night.
And the Knicks of Toronto won a title not looking like they did yesterday. We got so much to get into. You're listening to the JR sport brief. It is the JR sport show here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network.
Thank you so much to Matt Derek of the chief's digest for joining us in the last break at the top of the hour. NBA season is upon us. We saw history made last night, LeBron James on the court with his son, Bronny James.
Every Wednesday I bring you a new top six list. And at the top of the hour, we're going to talk about the top six father and son combos that we have ever seen in the world of sports. Meanwhile, the NBA as the season got underway last night, Celtics and New York Knicks, we got a full slate of games. Everybody else that didn't play last night outside of the Lakers, the Timberwolves, the Knicks and the Celtics, they're getting underway right now. You know, one of those disappointing matchups just getting started in Philadelphia is between the Philadelphia 76ers and they are hosting the Milwaukee Bucks. A lot of expectations for Giannis Atetokounmpo and Damian Lillard and even their head coach, Doc Rivers. And can I consider this year number two?
Yeah. Doc Rivers showed up midway through the year. We'll see what they do. There's no Chris Middleton and Saquon Barkley, the brand new Philadelphia Eagle. He just banged on the Liberty Bell to signify the start of the game.
Great. Nice that Saquon is not just smashing the New York Giants, but taking time to a smash the Liberty Bell to start the season for the Sixers that are probably going to be good, but not good enough to win anything because of injuries. The Sixers are currently likely going to be investigated due to some of their practices when it comes to sitting out Joel Embiid. He's not expected to play their first three games of the season.
And it's hard to win a championship, right? Did you see? Well, I'm sure you did. Maybe you heard about it.
Hickey, how the hell? The Boston Celtics were launching threes like nobody's business last night. Like they had a record tying 29 threes and then they kept taking threes at the end. They missed what, like 13 consecutive threes trying to break the record? It was they they tied the record at 29. I think it was about eight minutes to go. That's pretty crazy how you can't miss for what is that 40 minutes of the game and then the final eight minutes when it really counts in terms of breaking a record.
You can't. There's a lid on top. That was, I mean, I guess the only silver lining, if you will, for the Knicks. There wasn't a record broken on him. Oh man. Otherwise it was bad. Yeah, they got some catching up to do.
And obviously there's continuity as a factor. The New York Knicks are now a new team. When you bring in someone like Karl-Anthony Towns, he didn't have the greatest of games. Only 12 points. Mikael Bridges, he stunk the joint up in the first half, did better at the end, finished with 16.
So they have some, they have some issues that they need to patch up. But Jason Tatum, who out of the gate had like 25 points in the first half, finished with 37 points overall. The last time we saw him on a basketball court, he was barely on it in the Olympics out in Paris. And Jason Tatum, after the game, he said, listen, we lit it up from three. He says, it wasn't a surprise. That's what he told TNT. No, not really, but I'm surprised we missed every three for the last eight minutes.
You know, we're going to be upset about that. Yeah, Josh Harder, the New York Knicks. This guy is always saying something funny. I don't know if this was a joke or not, but he says that, uh, maybe they were chemically enhanced. MD&D is a drug test all down my teeth right now.
Cause that was, I ain't never seen nothing like that before, man. So I mean, I guess I did see you got to give them credit, man. They're already, uh, an explosive team. Okay.
Drug test them all, right? Tatum had 37, Derek White had 24, Jalen Brown had 23. Let's see what they look like in the next game. They take on the wizards.
Oh my God. The wizards are going to try to go shot for shot with them. Hickey, they might break the record next time because the wizards are just going to, what was it?
What's pool and other ones named Kuzma. They're just going to shoot. That team is off.
I feel bad for DC. Like they got to watch that basketball crap. I guess the only silver lining is it will be interesting.
They won't be a boring team. That's for sure. There'll be some nights where both are on, uh, and it's fun. There'll be some nights when both are off.
And if you like to, you know, laugh at some misery, you could also find that maybe a little fun, man. I would only go to a wizard's game if I knew they were going to have the mimosas on Sunday. Okay. The only thing that can get you there. Yeah. They gotta be like the, is it the mystics? They gotta be like the mystics. They have to have mimosas on Sunday. Yeah. I need brunch. I'm not just going to go watch the wizards.
I need brunch first. I need to be, look it up. And then not in toxic is intoxicated.
That's not good, right? I mean, you can be intoxicated and responsible. Okay. Yeah.
I need booze. If I'm a watch the wizards, let's put it that way. I don't worry about it. I won't. It's, it's a walking area.
It's in Chinatown at DC. I'm very familiar. And so I can, I can have a, I can have a bunch of mimosas and walk to the game and I can do it safely. That'll be fun. Not watching them play basketball. Anyway, speaking of fun, this man is the opposite of fun.
Prepare yourselves. It's Joe Missoula. He talks about how proud of his team it was last night.
He sounds something like this. The word distraction, it can be good or bad. And, and we talked about it yesterday as a team, that this is a good distraction. As long as we focus on what led to this, this, this banner, the lead was a by-product of our toughness, their mindset, the deepness of the team, our toughness, their mindset, the details, the execution, the effort, togetherness, all those things.
So as we're going through this ring ceremony, cherish it and focus on the process of what goes into that. And I thought the guys did a great job of that, but it's who they are. Oh my God, Hickey. He depresses me. That man makes me sad. I feel sad for him. And that was one of the more positive things he had to say.
Oh man. What, what, what can make him happy? Like I want to do something to personally lift his spirits. Like if I see him here, if I see him here in Atlanta, Hickey, I already know if I pass him in the hallway or something in the back and I was, Hey, Hey, what's up, coach?
Go, Hey. And it'll be simple like that. There's nothing that I could do that's going to change this man's disposition. He is who he is.
Not that I expect to change the world or change the man with one interaction, but I want to do something to make this guy lighten up a little bit. It's, it's basketball. Have some fun.
I mean, there's Tom Thibodeau isn't even that miserable. Come on. Maybe drop a jujitsu move on him. He does love to spar.
I think he enjoys that. I don't know. No damn jujitsu. What am I gonna do? Lay on the floor and grab him by the ankle?
What am I gonna do? Karate chop his throat maybe. I'm trying to cheer him up. Not bruise his thorax. I'm not trying to do that. I think that's when he's out in his happy place.
Like when he's, you know, getting, you talked about before last year when he's getting choked out, you know, what do you, you know, you got to think about, you know, what do you got to do to get out of that? Maybe you, you want me to assault an NBA head coach so I can get walked out of the building. No, no. They're gonna ban me.
They're gonna ban me. You're making what I'm saying sound extreme and delusional. Chopping the head coach of the Celtics in the throat?
I would dress it up as trying to get, take him to his happy place. And it just so happens that his happy place is more of the violent sport act. No, it's real simple.
Hey, did you see the John Jones fight last weekend? One of those. Right. Okay. That's better than chopping them in the throat. You're probably right. Trying to get me back. The people in the arena like me trying to ban me, man. I have no choice but to give me a, the boot faster than Trey young, man.
That's sad. Anyway, congratulations, Joe Missoula. Prepare for a lot of, uh, of misery with that man as the, the season goes on, even though the Boston Celtics are likely to be the best team in the NBA, they're likely to win the most games in the NBA this season. The Celtics are likely to go back to the Eastern conference finals.
And then from there, we see what the hell they do. Maybe in the NBA finals where they will be the team most likely is to win the championship again. And Joe Missoula will likely be miserable again, but the full season is underway and we're back to normal. There's no Kawhi Leonard. There's no Zion. There's no Joel Embiid. At least, uh, which ball is back? Hickey, which ball is back? Lonzo.
Lonzo ball is back. He has a, he has a dead person's knee. Is that what he, he got a dead person's knee? That he does. And hopefully he plays like an alive person.
Not like the dead person. My goodness. Good for him. I hope his knee lasts. It's the JR Sportbree show here with you on the infinity sports network. We're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, it's time for a new top six list.
