Technology is great, isn't it? We're minutes away, about 20 minutes away, from the Tennessee Titans taking on the Miami Dolphins. And then, next hour, a little more than an hour away, from the Seattle Seahawks taking on the Detroit Lions. Another craptastic Monday Night Football doubleheader. Tyler Huntley is going to start for the Dolphins.
Last time I seen Tyler Huntley is helping to relieve Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. And then we'll see if, you know, the Detroit Lions can beat the Seahawks. I know Dan Campbell is not happy he hasn't picked up a victory against them yet. Oh, it has to come sooner than later, right? The Seattle Seahawks have been out here taking on powder puffs. We'll get there as we continue on. You missed the first hour of the show?
Well, look at it this way. We talked about the New York Mets and their victory over the Atlanta Braves. The New York Mets are going into the postseason. They're playing their second game of the doubleheader right now. Atlanta Braves are leading three to nothing. It's the top of the ninth. Braves out here trying to shut it down and secure their spot in the postseason. If the Atlanta Braves hold on, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team that went to the World Series last year against those Rangers, they're done.
They got to sit around and watch at home just like everybody else as a loser. And that shows you how volatile Major League Baseball is season to season. It shows you how volatile it is or it just shows you the parity in the league. That year to year to year, it doesn't matter how much money you spend or who you've added or what you do, if you go on a run, you can run your way to the World Series. I mean, the New York Mets could run themselves to a World Series. Hickey, are you disappointed that the Braves are going to be, looks like they're going to be kicking it in? Well, hey, this is the trouble area for the Braves.
But yes, yes, I am. But do you think they're going to, they're so battered, they ain't winning nothing. And now Chris Sale's back hurts, the Braves are cooked.
I would agree. And you said before, and I totally agree, I'm surprised with how injured they are. They're even in this spot, honestly, to where they win one game and they're in the playoffs.
I mean, the names and the talent that right now is on the injured list that they've lost for a large part of this season, still the fact that they are now three outs away from going back to the postseason is truly incredible. Yeah, but that's what, you're correct. But that's what I call a waste of time.
Fair. There's certain teams, they're just out here wasting everybody's time. It's nice to get in. Who in Atlanta thinks that they're going to do anything?
I don't think anybody, you know, maybe it's some delusional people, but they're not doing anything this year. I was going to say, is the vibe down there, like, is there any belief of, hey, if we get in, we can get hot? Or is it kind of like, all right, if we get in, great, but we're not doing much? I feel the vibe all season long has been, we're hurt.
Like, can we get in? How are we going to stay afloat? There hasn't been any optimism. They've lost so much offense throughout the course of the season, whether it's Albies who can only bat on one side of the plate now, or Austin Riley and Michael Harris.
It seems like everybody at some point in time has been gone. And then, of course, Acuna. I mean, we got one Acuna playing right now and he's on the Mets. What are we doing?
That's true. It's, yeah, it's been an injury ravaged season where it looks like right now the Padres will get the Braves. I'm sure the Padres are not upset about that. So now the New York Mets have to get on a plane, fly across country after they play two games today and they play tomorrow evening, West Coast time. What time is that game going to start? Eight, nine o'clock?
I believe yes. Eight thirty eight in San Diego and five thirty five in Milwaukee. Oh man.
Hickey, I was going to say if I wasn't standing here working, I'd be asleep by then. So I'll be able to, I'll be able to catch a little bit of the New York Mets tomorrow. It looks like they are going to be in San Diego. Oh, it's official. It's done. It's over.
Atlanta Braves are in the postseason. Wow. Anyway. Wow. What a waste. What a waste.
3-0 is the final. The Braves get into the, that's just like, if you're, I got to ask some Braves fans around here. I'm not doing it today, Hickey, because I'm on the radio now. I can't do that.
Like this is like dead man walking. I don't know, whatever. Anyway, the season will be over before the week is up. So good for them. We'll see what the New York Mets can do in the process. 8-5-5, 2-1-2, 42-27.
That's 8-5-5, 2-1-2, 42-27. Speaking of a team going nowhere, just taking that slow walk to obscurity. It's ugly for Philadelphia right now. I'm talking about the Eagles. It is ugly for the Philadelphia Eagles. Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts have lost another game. This time to the team that blasted them out of the postseason last year, earlier this year, the Milwaukee, what am I, Hickey, I'm mixing up my bucks, man.
What am I doing? There's the Milwaukee Bucks. There's the Tampa Bay Bucks. You know, I call the Pirates the Bucks. There's too many bucks.
You are right. There are a lot of bucks. Think about it. We got a team nicknamed the Bucks and they're called the Pirates. Just buccaneers, too many. Anyway, the Eagles lost to the Bucks of Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield, who decided yesterday to throw two touchdowns, rushed for another one, passed for 347 yards. I thought the secondary was supposed to be better with all the new guys that Philadelphia went out there and drafted. The Eagles now fall to 2-2.
The Bucks raised their record to 3-1. The Bucks are going to take on the Falcons on Thursday, Thursday Night Football here in Atlanta. The Falcons are a team. They don't know how to score a touchdown if their life depended on it. But when it comes to the Eagles, they had big expectations. That's Saquon Barkley and AJ Brown and Devontae Smith were going to go out there and light it up. Unfortunately, AJ Brown has been dealing with a hamstring. Devontae got knocked the hell out last week. And so it was basically the Jalen Hurts and the Saquon Barkley show.
And that was not good enough. And so Jalen Hurts is putting on a Superman cape and he's just doing too much, like too much of the wrong things. Jalen Hurts now has a turnover in nine straight games. That is the most in the NFL right now. That is the longest streak I should say in the NFL right now. And it's getting ugly here for the Philadelphia Eagles.
There's nothing, nothing cute about this. If you want to find a saving grace is that the Eagles have the Browns up next on their schedule. And the Browns suck. Browns out here lost to the Raiders.
And it's just, just sad. The kind of pathetic what's going on in Philadelphia. And I know people are going to blame Jalen Hurts and he is to blame.
But what do you want them to do right now? Just throw the ball and got it all the time? There's nothing else for him to do. Everybody else knows this is going to be him or Saquon and they stink. And so Nick Sirianni is of course getting his behind handed to him.
And he's not stupid. He's going to take the blame. Listen to Nick Sirianni, one of my favorite people to make a speech. You know, I felt like, again, let's not say we didn't we didn't coach well enough. We didn't play well enough. And that's always going to start with me. If we go out there and lay an egg and we're down 24 nothing, that's going to start on me.
I didn't have the guys ready to start. But our fundamentals aren't what we needed it to be. We'll make sure that we're working hard on that.
Five weeks coming at a good time. We got to get our bodies right. And we got to, we got to make some changes as far as what's going on fundamentally. Nick Sirianni always sounds like, he sounds like a teenager making excuses. Like Nick Sirianni didn't sound like a professional football coach when he got the job as he talked about their process. And less process means less thinking and less thinking means more action. And our football players with less thinking and more action and reacting will make for a better football team. It's like, bro, what are you talking about?
You sound like a coordinator who just accidentally got the job. It's that in that one, Hickey, remember that one solitary tear that fell down his face during the Super Bowl? That's right. It said, how much is that meme going to get used and abused when the Eagles show him the door? I didn't even think about that. You're right.
That's going to see a lot of action. That whenever that man is let go from the Philadelphia Eagles, that that one tear meme from the Super Bowl is just going to run. And the Eagles, they've been a disaster really since we saw how they collapsed last year. We saw how many one score games that they were involved in, despite the record showing otherwise the record would show that they're very successful. And then we saw them hit the crapper against the Bucks last year in the postseason.
And here they are, the Bucks punched them in the mouth again, 33 to 16. Now, do I expect them to be this bad all year long? No, I still believe the Eagles will go to the postseason. I think at minimum, you know, maybe they'll still win the NFC East.
What are we looking at? The Giants might as well not exist. The Dallas Cowboys are going to be good, but not great. Nobody's going to be great.
And just maybe, maybe, maybe the Washington Command is when this with Daniels leading away and I will laugh my ass off. Nick Sirianni, though, if he doesn't find results at the end of this year, if they don't find decent postseason success, if there's not a good vibe at the end of the year, Nick Sirianni is going to be gone. I know Bill Belichick for all the television work that he's doing on Pat McAfee and Peyton Manning show and what have you. Bill Belichick is sitting around analyzing his roster.
He's looking at what's there, what's going to be there next year. And Bill Belichick is just like, well, just give me my job. Nick Sirianni doesn't evoke any confidence, whether he's on the sidelines or in the locker room or whether he's trying to convince people that him and Jalen Hurts have a good relationship. Nick Sirianni is on the hot seat. They will not boot him in the regular season. I don't see that happening unless the Eagles really suck. But I can't see him being the coach past this year.
And then when you say things like this, that we have no identity, we don't know our identity, that that doesn't bode well at all either. It doesn't matter what injuries you have. Listen to this. It's I think it's early.
And I think there's a lot of teams stories unwritten. Right. Right. Yeah. I don't think, you know, again, you have some things that you have some base things that you think that you do well. But to say, you know, we know what our identity is. Yeah. I mean, I think that's just a, yeah, I mean, we're going to figure out what we do. Well, we're going to we're going to continue, try to continue to do that, see what we don't do.
Well, try to get out of that and then try to match some of the things that together. Oh, no, bro. Wrong answer.
You don't say you don't have an identity. Hickey, who teaches these people to say these things? And why is he thinking about other teams? Why did he even evoke other teams don't know what they're doing either. So I guess it's OK for us to. He needs PR training. That was the worst possible answer could have said we don't we don't know what our identity is.
Four games into the year as you are struggling when you're on the hot seat. Oh, boy. Yeah. That was a dumb answer. We had you tell them you don't know that you tell them the identity. But if you want to blame injuries, then say that.
But don't even make that excuse. We have an identity and it doesn't matter who's here, what's not, the next guy has to step up. Come on, man. Hickey, give him some what will make him into a. Oh, I will be careful now. What will make him a strong coach? Should we just give him some some Jack? Do we got to take him into a room and shake him? Like what makes what will make him kind of. He sounds like he sounds like a guy explaining away, you know, why he failed chemistry.
Like what are we doing? He sounds like a guy that's been neutered and knows it. Ouch. Right.
Damn. He knows. Look, my he has no control. So his fate right is not in the hands of himself. His fate is in the hands of Jalen Hurts and Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.
And I guess underway, Howie Roseman and the execution. So he can't like criticize anybody. It sounds like because he can't do anything to fix it because they don't want him doing it. They brought the guy back and asked him, don't do anything. And even then, he's not even good at doing nothing because now you hear him in the press conferences and he's giving you these terrible answers. You said the man has been neutered.
Wow. I was going to say, how do we take this man and make him into a man? And you already said they took away his manhood. I mean, would you disagree?
No, I wouldn't. He's on borrowed time, man. He is on borrowed time. It really sucks because I think despite what people are saying right now, Jalen Hurts is still a good quarterback. Last year, he had to deal with injuries. Right now, he's having to deal with injuries to his top two wide receivers. He's still trying to work things out right now with Saquon Barkley. I mean, what are we?
Should we just call this? Well, we can't. I was going to say this is like the New York Giants, Saquon Barkley and a quarterback.
But Jalen Hurts is actually a good quarterback who's just trying to do too much right now. That's it. That's it. I'm still OK with the Eagles. You still feel OK about them? I'm nervous. I'm nervous because they switched out the coordinators. Right. Last year, we were told there's a coaching. That was the issue. And now through four games, I mean, not only do they not have an identity, a lot of the same issues right now are popping up. You mentioned Jalen Hurts' turnovers.
That's very problematic. The defense can't tackle anybody. Everything that went wrong in the second half of the year last year, when we were told it was the coach's faults and that's why they fired their offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. Well, they changed them. Seems like they made good hires. Right. Kellen Moore was respected. Now the players, at least on the offense, the players are hurt now.
They are. But isn't that also why you pay Jalen Hurts to make, you know, to make up when you don't have AJ Brown and Devontae Smith to make some plays? How many how many quarterbacks in the NFL can do that?
I think we're long past those days. That's why we got all these dudes right now making 50 and 55. Look at the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Trevor Lawrence is making more money than Jalen Hurts. What are they doing? Nothing. Suffering?
Like suffering. It's it's even now today, I think they're very few and far quarterbacks who are quote unquote the whole show. Let's put it this way. If we took Patrick Mahomes and forget Rashee Rice, if we took Patrick Mahomes, yes, the best of the best. If we took him off the Chiefs and replaced him with Gardner Minshew, what would they be doing? They would not be a good football team. Like that. We got a couple of those guys, you know, to be honest.
I get it. Lamar Jackson is like a nuclear weapon by himself. But I think outside of Patrick Mahomes, the two guys we saw last night and Lamar, a little bit. And then also people accused Josh Allen sometimes are doing too much outside of those three guys. What quarterbacks can really put a whole team on their back and will them to victory and kind of make people and kind of force things?
I don't see anybody else. I don't think no other quarterbacks do that. You're right. So I'll phrase it this way then.
Fine. If we can't put it on Jalen Hurts to be better, then how about this? If you can't carry everybody, don't turn the ball over.
Don't be the reason why you're losing. You're right. Their turnovers are an issue. There's no doubt about that.
I just know that. I think they'll be competitive for a playoff spot. If they don't make the playoffs, Nixon, Rianni is definitely getting fired. He could still get fired if they make the postseason.
I think they'll I think they'll be in a mix. Tampa Bay is Tampa Bay is good enough to be good. I don't think Tampa Bay is championship good. And I know the comments made by Tom Brady's like, listen, I thought being stressed is not winning the Super Bowl and then Baker Mayfield is like, hey, my comments were taken out of context. And anyway, it's still early in the season. Let's see what happens. There's still plenty of time for the Eagles to turn things around and still look good.

Oh boy. Unfortunately, we have learned that as of, I want to say 15 minutes ago, when we got started in the last segment, it's being reported by TMZ and confirmed by his agent Ryan Fitterman that Pete Rose, the Major League Baseball hit king has passed away at the age of 83. TMZ has reported this. You have other people who work in baseball media very closely, have decided to report this, that Pete Rose has passed away at the age of 83. Uh, Pete Rose's agent, Ryan Fitterman of Fitterman Sports says the family is asking for privacy at this time. And we all know about Pete Rose. This is one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
This is someone who played just about every position that existed. Infield to outfield, a 17 time All-Star. He is the hit king 4,256 hits. He's a three-time World Series champ.
He's a former National League MVP in the year 1973. And we all know that Pete Rose is one of the greatest players, one of the greatest hitters ever. This guy played hard. He wasn't afraid to get into it.
He wasn't afraid to step on you, run you over. But this man with the bat in his hands is one of the greatest of all time. Pete Rose has passed away here at the age of 83 years old.
And this is the part that sucks and stinks. I know I've been saying it for years and years and years. Uh, Pete Rose, like, like anybody else wanted to go into the hall of fame. Pete Rose did not get into the hall of fame because in 1989, he was charged with gambling on games he managed and played in. In 2004, Pete Rose ultimately admitted that he did. And in June of 2015, Major League Baseball said he bet while he was a player manager, Pete Rose was very forthright in his latter years that, you know, he wanted a chance and an opportunity to get in. He even wrote a letter to the commissioner and he was rebuffed. It was certainly my thought that Pete Rose, if and when he got into the hall of fame, it wouldn't be until after he passed.
Well, unfortunately, that day is here. Pete Rose has passed away at the age of 83 years old. There are no further details as of right now when it comes to the passing of Pete Rose.
There's no additional information on whether or not he was sick or whether he had any ailments. But Pete Rose, I don't know, is he going to go into the hall? You know, now that he's gone, it just thinks that, you know, he was punished and he never saw, he never saw the inside of Cooperstown. And it is, I guess, the cardinal sin to go ahead and bet on the game. I just think we could have did better. It's like, OK, he's been punished long enough.
What else do you want to do? And so this is a wild time, especially knowing that Pete Rose has passed. And earlier today, we got the awful news of Dikembe Mutombo, excuse me, Dikembe Mutombo passing away as well. Not a good day for sports fans.
It doesn't matter if you're in in Cincinnati or here in Atlanta where Dikembe Mutombo made his home or you happen to be in the Congo where Mutombo decided to help out by building hospitals and schools. It's just a wild day. You know, I didn't think I'd be here on the show, you know, filling everybody in on the passing of Pete Rose and talking about Dikembe Mutombo. But here we are. Life is very fragile.
You got to make the most of it while it is right here in front of you. Two different reputations. Unfortunately for Pete Rose, he spent the latter years signing things, just hanging out in Vegas and putting his name on on merchandise and signing cards and I guess trying to make whatever money and coin that he could while he could still get some value out of it. And Dikembe Mutombo, earlier today, we learned he passed away due to brain cancer. And I'll tell you this. It was pretty wild seeing Dikembe Mutombo here in Atlanta, just always at the games and smiling and walking around and being friendly to everybody.
Never with security, never kind of walking away. Just a man of the people. And for all of his humanitarian work, for everything he did in the Congo and just advocating for people with intellectual disabilities, Dikembe Mutombo was a great guy. So Dikembe Mutombo, he's gone today. He's gone at 58 and Pete Rose passes as well. This is announced by reported by TMZ about 30 minutes ago. Pete Rose gone at 83. It's the JR sport re-show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network 855-212-4227.
It's 855-212-4227. We're getting ready for some Monday Night Football with the double headers getting ready to already be underway. What we're going to do is take a break. We'll come back on the other side. We'll take a listen to Joel Embiid earlier today on the importance of Dikembe Mutombo. And then we will talk more about this unfortunate passing as we just learned.
Pete Rose, Major League Baseball hit king and legend gone here at 83 years old. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227.
Phone lines are open if you want to give a call. You are listening to the JR Sport Brief. It's the JR Sport Brief show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I need you to think O'Reilly Auto Parts for all of your car care needs.
Get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at O'Reilly Auto Parts. In our last break, we had to share and break the news to you of Pete Rose's passing at the age of 83 years old. According to TMZ, they got a statement from his agent that he passed away at his home in Las Vegas earlier this earlier today, earlier this morning. And so kind of a one you learn about the passing of Dikembe Mutombo at 58. And then here later on in the day, we learn about the passing of Pete Rose, two sports legends here in the United States of America. And Pete Rose arguably the greatest hitter, the most successful hitter of all time, leading Major League Baseball in hits, career hits 4256. We also know the reason that he hasn't gotten the ultimate accolade of going into Cooperstown and Baseball's Hall of Fame is the betting scandal and the admission that he bet while he was a manager player.
And that's what kept him out ultimately. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. Alan is calling from Toronto. You're on the JR Sport Brief show.
Yeah, it's very, very sad news for Pete. You know, I met him a number of years ago in Cooperstown, and there was a lot, there was a lot on the signing. We acted up, we handed up, and I brought up a lot of fond memories, you know, the 1975-76 World Series victories in Cincinnati, and the 1980 in Philly.
And I talked about August 3, 1989, three weeks before his lifetime ban, when he, the Reds got 16 runs, 14 runs in the very first inning, and wound up winning 18-2. And we talked about it, and he mentioned something about, he played for one run, and he got 13 extra ones. So we acted up, and I personally like him. He was very, very good to me. We talked for about 10 or 15 minutes.
Like I said, it was a lull in the action, and it's great. I just wish that he didn't have those problems. And then just before I left, I said, so you don't have a plaque, a lousy plaque in the music down the road. You're a Hall of Fame caliber player, I told him, and you have Hall of Fame numbers. And in my mind, you're in the Hall of Fame. I'm not a mental case.
I'm not retarded. And in my mind, as well as many, many thousands of other people, you are in the Hall of Fame in our minds. So, you know, you're worried about a lousy plaque. So, you know, it kind of comforted me. It would be nice. Yeah, we all, we can all, you know, some people want that admiration more than others.
Everything that he has done certainly speaks for itself when it comes to what he did on the baseball field and how he played. Alan, thank you for calling from Toronto. Yeah, I'm sorry to hear the sad news. Thank you. Appreciate you for sharing the story as well. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. Pete Rose months ago, back in July of this year, he actually spoke, excuse me, he spoke on collect media. And Pete Rose was asked whether or not he ever thinks Rob Manfred will lift his band, his suspension lifetime band from baseball. I want you to take a listen to this from Pete Rose.
This was July of this year. Well, you can't turn TV on and ESPN, that's all about gambling. But it's a lot of money for baseball. And I don't know, Mr. Manfred, whatever changes mine. I would doubt it because I think after you're suspended for 29 years, it's hard to lift his suspension. Not that he may not want to, but just, you know, I think he's probably worried if I get away with it, which I didn't get away with it.
I've been suspended 29 years. So he's worried that other players may do it. So we'll take a new commissioner. I mean, it seems like I like Bob Manfred.
I don't want a new commissioner. He'll come around eventually. He's a good guy. He's a fair guy. That's all I can ask for. I don't pursue it, though. He's got enough on his mind to worry about me, you know, taking the band off of me. Yeah.
I mean, what do you do? Pete Rose has made it very clear. Yeah, I would say over the past 20, 25 years about what he did, what he did not do. He's been very open and very honest. And for what remained of his life, he certainly was not pushy at all in trying to get into the hall. He would make it very clear that that's where he wanted to be. But to Alan and to Ronsel's point, who Alan just called us up, you know, he didn't want to push it.
And if you happen to be Rob Manfred and you did not come through and institute the band from more than 30 years at this point in time, do you want to be that guy to, quote unquote, open up Pandora's box? It's an easy thing to do. I would have had no issue if he let him in like I would. But I also understand not letting him in.
It's almost I don't know how many more years we have to be gone. I don't know if we got to move two generations past where people don't feel, oh, well, you let him in. That's not fair. But to Pete Rose's point, there is so much of a of a gambling culture that has been introduced into professional sports in every single way. I don't think that's a clear justification. Oh, well, everybody's gambling.
It's so widely recognized. Baseball is down with gambling. Oh, we just just let Pete Rose in. Because what you don't want to do is what we've seen with the NFL. We had Jamison Williams last year suspended for gambling on his phone. Hey, we got a guy in Calvin Ridley playing football tonight. You know, this man was suspended for gambling on his phone. That's in the NFL. We just saw what happened.
We got we got guys going to prison out of the NBA. You know, just just for gambling and setting up gambling on the phone. Ipe Mizuhara.
Okay. It's Shohei Ohtani's interpreter. Probably the most recent story of somebody gambling. He doesn't even play. And so maybe Pete Rose never goes in.
Maybe they waited until he passed today, unfortunately, at 83 before he gets legitimate consideration. But it's a fine line. And it's terrible. The line is based on on business and confidence that people who sit down and watch the games and people who gamble on them, that they don't feel that what they're watching is the WWE, that the outcomes are not swayed or predetermined because of a player or managers, you know, financial interest in the game. They lose all credibility to make money. And that's what everything boils down to. Money makes the world go around.
It's a business. So if you wanted to look at a reason why Pete Rose is not or has not been in the Hall of Fame, it may be baseball. Well, now, maybe they didn't want to have no free pass.
You broke the cardinal rule, cardinal sin. Can't do it. Hickey, do you think you think they'll they'll let him in? I don't expect next year or the year after that. But do you think he will ever get into the hall? I do.
I do. That's kind of a thought I've had for a while now, where as long as he's still in the earth, I don't think they'll ever give him the satisfaction of him being inducted and getting that feeling of joining Cooperstown and being in that select fraternity. I do think, though, like you said, maybe it's not next year, maybe it's five or 10 years from now. I do expect, let's say, by 2035, he'll have a plaque in there for sure. I think over the next 10 years, they let him in. I think so.
No concern with I don't want to say this is a call it a hall pass. This doesn't open up Pandora's box. I mean, this doesn't say gambling is OK. Well, he gambled a long time ago. So we're going to put Pete in. I mean, at the end of the day, this is what I think I think you would agree.
Tell me if you don't. We are we're going to have a scandal one day, a scandal one day, like forget all the other sports. Of course, we've had them already. The baseball is one day going to have a guy, a player, a manager who thinks he can skirt the system. And that's going to happen whether or not Pete Rose gets in or not. Don't you wouldn't you say one day is it's inevitable we'll have something happen?
I think so. But I also don't think putting him in the Hall of Fame is all of a sudden, like essentially a promotion to say, oh, hey, the gambling is OK. No problem here. I mean, they have rules in place. We've seen punishments already doled out in other sports. We're seeing it right now with Shohei Otani's interpreter. That's a little bit different.
That's more of a base in 33 years, right? A law breaking than just gambling on sports as an athlete, as a baseball player or MLB adjacent, I guess we'll say with him as a translator. But like we have technology right to now you can tell if someone's gambling and so they will get punished for it.
Like. I'm trying to think if a baseball, like if it was Shohei Otani who got busted gambling on baseball, is he banned for life? Yeah, I think.
Yeah, I think. Well, the reason why I ask is you see with football, right, you have the one year suspension, the two year suspension. They have different suspensions for kind of different levels of gambling, essentially. I guess I just look at it as you can get punished, but also separately, if your stats are still good enough where it's not helping you on the field like steroids do. I think it's almost two different categories.
A quick search. The penalty, rule 21 outlines possible punishments, which include a one year ban from the sport to permanent ineligibility. Other penalties for illegal sports betting are left up to the league's front office. So this seems to me it depends on the commissioner. It depends on and I don't know if we want to put that in the hands of Rob Manfred to dole out anything, but it looks like it's it's pretty up. Players, umpires, club or league officials who bet on a baseball game then are permanently ineligible. OK, for example, Padres infielder. Yeah, this is earlier this year, I believe to Peter Marcano was banned for life after Major League Baseball found he bet on baseball games, including games involving the Pirates when he played for them. Baseball players who bet on a baseball game they are not involved in are ineligible for one year. And then you also have what I described as the commissioner's discretion. So.
Yeah, it's severe. If Otani was actually out there going, hey, I'm going 50-50 this year and I'm putting all my money on it, he pay, ring it up. Yeah, Otani, Otani could have Otani could have been banned for life.
He could. It's tricky because people are going to gamble. Athletes are going to gamble. A referee will try to get away. It's we're human beings. People are going to try to skirt the system and get around whatever they need to do that they feel is going to be financially to their benefit. And to your point, yeah, I think ultimately Pete Rose will go in. And whether he doesn't, that's that's not going to stop or deter someone from quote unquote pushing the button, you know, and seeing how far they can go out there and take things.
It's just it's human nature. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227.
Pete Rose passed away today at 83 years old. 855-212-4227. Jacob is calling from Knoxville. You're on the JR Sport re-show. What's going on, Jacob?
Hey, JR. Great to be with you. It is sad about Pete Rose passing. And I think I was listening to your discussion there. I think it ought to be brought up that it was never proven that he dumped or tanked. He never bet on the Reds to lose. He bet on them to win.
And I think that's a very important distinction. And I'll bring up Reggie Bush. Look how Reggie Bush has been a welcome back into the Heisman fraternity. He's in commercials. He's got his trophy back. The court of public opinion is on his side. He's suing the NCAA.
Well, I think I think those are two separate things, Jacob. I wouldn't put Reggie Bush and Pete Rose in the same category. Reggie Bush was, between him and his family, was said to have taken ineligible benefits, things that they were not supposed to take in regards to gifts. And we certainly see how the landscape has changed in football.
So he's welcome back. Reggie Bush was not tasked with, you know, betting or doing something or anything, really. And the NCAA rules, let's be quite clear, they've been robbing the players for about 40 years under the guise of these are student athletes.
And we see how the tide has turned. And when it comes to Pete Rose, it is very different. It's not so much who he gambled on or whether he thought that they were going to win or lose.
The idea of someone gambling at all in a sport that they're participating in, whether it's win or lose, can really erode the confidence of people watching the sport. And that's the tricky part. And thank you, Jacob, for calling from Knoxville.
I have to hit commercial. It don't matter if he said, hey, we're going to win every game, we'll lose every game. It doesn't matter if he was throwing the games. He was chomping at the confidence of people watching. Like, am I watching a real baseball game or is this WWF, WWE? I think Pete Rose will eventually get in.
It's just unfortunate that he won't be alive to see it. I'll get more of your calls on the other side. 855-212-4227. It's the JR support reshow. Don't move.
