This is the JR Sportbrief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Much love and many thanks to everybody tuned in and locked in all over North America. Happy Monday to you. Wherever you're at, whatever you're doing, I hope you're well. I hope you're safe. I hope you're smooth.
I hope you are cool. This is when the show gets started every single weekday at 6 p.m Eastern, 3 Pacific. Coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you so much to super producer and host Ryan Hickey, holding it down for us on the boards in New York City.
Hope you had a good weekend. Hope you watched some USA basketball, some Olympics, maybe you're keeping up with training camp. Man, I was going on Friday and boom, we got two big contracts that got done. Tua Tonga Veloa and Jordan Love. DeNico Autry is banned six games for drugs.
We got people tearing Achilles, Sam or Bukem. Sorry about that. Hickey, you sad about that, right?
You are? Yeah, that stinks. He's a good player last year. He's very consistent and so I appreciate your sympathy. I mean, I'm sorry. The only good news is, I guess if you want to call it good news is if a Colts player had to go down. Oh crap. At least it's not Anthony Richardson. There's still time. Still time. I'm wishing him nothing but the best of health, but it's July. It's still July, so there's still time.
There's still time. You know what? We're going to get into Patrick Mahomes, get his thoughts on all the other quarterbacks, making lots of money. Aaron Rodgers was an unhappy quarterback today. I guess he's not happy with how the New York Jets were practicing. You got a guy in Joel Embiid. He's getting booed all over France.
I guess he deserves it. Jason Tatum didn't play in that Vic 3 against Serbia yesterday and so we got a lot to get into, a lot to discuss. If you want to participate in the show, go ahead. We got a phone number. It's 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. You can also find me online.
I'm everywhere at JR Sportbree. Yeah, so over the next four hours we're gonna talk Olympics and basketball and football most definitely and contracts and we got it all. Shout out to everybody listening on the free Odyssey app. Yeah, there are still things in life that you can get for free. The Odyssey app is one of them.
A-U-D-A-C-Y. Thank you to everybody tuned in on their local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. Wherever you live. I don't know where you live. Sirius XM channel 158 and a smart speaker if you have one.
Just ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. Nicky, how you doing? You had a good weekend? You good?
I did, yeah. Weekend was fun as always. It goes by way too fast and I mean you hear these training camp injuries. I did not get hurt this weekend so we'll take it.
That's good. Well, you weren't out there getting thrown around by 300 pound men, were you? No, no.
That would be a hell of a story though if I was. I don't know what that would entail but. Sports. Of course, right.
Yes. Sports, of course, of course. Everything's sports. I had a decent weekend. I was, I played in Bernie Williams game.
Hickey, I did not get a hit. I'm sorry, I didn't get it. You embarrassed us, huh? I did. The JR Sport Brief Show is now tarnished.
It is. Did you strike out? No, no, no strike out. Okay, that's fine.
You can't, that's it, no, no. I believe I lined out in a softball game, could you imagine? That's what I'm saying, that's the ultimate. I took a strike which was pretty close, right? And then I took a ball, the obvious ball, and then I swung at the third pitch and I believe I lined out to the shortstop. Okay, line out, good contact.
Just add a ball, you know? Yeah, lined out to the shortstop. Yeah, I played right center field because you can't just have one center field to add a game.
You got to have four outfielders in this softball game. Yeah, and the ball came to me, Hickey. I didn't bring a glove so I had to just use somebody's glove that was just there and the ball came my way and I was just like crap. I let it fall and I had to chase to go get it, man. My glove sucked.
Oh my god. Yeah, my glove sucked. It's always a glove, never you. Yeah, no, it's always a glove, never me. And then I had to, then I was subbed out for Bernie Williams himself.
Not bad, not bad, come on now. Wait, he didn't start his own softball game? That was Bernie Williams, come on man, you do what he want, Bernie. Well, I'm saying was he on the bench or did he switch positions and, you know, like, you know, do like a double switch and he moves over and you go out?
Oh no, he got to shake hands and kiss babies and he just do all, it's his, it's his show, you know? And so if I, if I had to be subbed out by anybody, at least I'm subbed out by the star, you know? That's true, that's true. Could you imagine to get subbed out for some little kid or somebody? No, I got subbed out by Bernie Williams, that's an honor, okay?
You remember when Jameis Williams, Jameis Winston got replaced by Tom Brady as the Buckskin? Yeah, that's right. He said it's an honor because they replaced me with the legend.
That, that's kind of you right there. That came out of his mouth, he said that? Oh yeah, so he's like, it's basically a compliment that they replaced me with the, with the goat. That sounds like you, you were replaced by the star himself. I give him credit, okay, for always finding the silver lining in things.
Congratulations, Jameis Winston, he gonna find the silver lining, so good on him. John Starks was there, a New York Knicks legend. John Starks did not participate in the game due to some type of hip injury that John had, and then Doc Gooden was there, and I haven't seen Doc in a long time, so it was nice to, to see Doc. He, he batted, he actually got a hit, and I think he, I think he got hit in the shin as well while he was trying to hit, and yeah, so everybody walked away alive. Bernie Williams certainly got a hit in his own game, of course, his skills have not eroded at all, and I lived.
I have no injuries outside of my back, which persistently hurts. I made it, and so thank you to, to Bernie Williams and, and Jared and, and, and Forge and all the great guys who help, you know, put the event on, and Bernie's just a, a cool dude. He's a cool dude. Hickey, next year you got to come up, man. I will be practicing from now until then, because I will not embarrass myself. Okay, all right.
Well, I didn't, you saying I embarrassed myself? No, no, no, no, no. I have not played softball in a while, and I have a feeling I would strike out, so. Oh no. It's impossible. It's almost, I don't think anybody struck out.
I don't think anybody. But when the ball is up there for so long, it's all in your head. You want to kill it.
Oh my God, things floating. Let me just, you know, look good in front of all the stars, and then crank this one, and then you look like, you know, an idiot when you swing and miss, spin around and fall down. See, I'm not doing too much. Like, I'm not stupid.
I'm just, I'm just aiming to make contact, and what may happen after that happens. I'm not expecting to, to drop a bomb. Jake Peavy, oh, Jake Peavy was there. Jake Peavy hit an inside the park home run.
Okay. Jeff Nelson, the reliever, was also there, and I think Jeff Nelson swung for the fences. Nobody hit a home run, but, you know, the guys who actually played baseball professionally, yeah, even the pitchers, they're not a, they're not a joke. Like Jeff Nelson in a, in a softball game, he went up the bat. Hickey, I'm playing, I'm playing center field.
You know how far back I had to go just to say this guy could hit the ball this far? It's like, I'm not here to do all this running, but it was, it was, it was, it was fun. It was fun.
I had a, I had a good time. So shout outs to everybody up in Richfield. And thank you so much to a legend, Bernie Williams. We'll get Bernie on the show sooner than later.
Maybe, maybe when the postseason gets closer, we'll get Bernie on the show. And we know we also got the trade deadline. That's, that's coming up in major league baseball. We've already had some trades that have gone down and, and we'll get into some of that as well. That's a wild day.
And then Hickey, how was the show on Friday? You blinked, I blinked and then boom, all of a sudden contracts, NFL contracts all over the place. The news came heavy and quickly. Wow. Like you said, it was just an avalanche to a Jordan love Friday went from kind of slow.
We'll see how it goes to boom jam packed. Well, we, we heard for days that Jordan loves contract was going to get done soon. And now he's making 200 and excuse me, I ought to say this correctly, $220 million over the next four years, he is making $55 million a year.
Jordan love has stepped into a special place. He is making the same amount of money per year as Joe burrow and Trevor Lawrence, $55 million. This is nuts people, $55 million to a tongue of a lower gets this contract. He's making $53 million a year. He's quarterback numbers are just astronomical and you want to know who doesn't have a contract and who doesn't have a deal yet.
I'll let you think about it. He plays for the Dallas Cowboys just last week. He said, well, yeah, we've had plenty of great players in history and a lot of them end up with other teams. This is talking about Dak Prescott. I think every Hickey, am I missing it?
Am I missing something? Every quarterback that's worth a damn right now that people have been talking about. Everybody got a deal except for Dak, right?
Trevor Lawrence, Jared Goff. You want to go to free agency, Kirk cousins, everyone that's been looking to get paid has gotten paid. Like you said, except for one stuff for Dak Prescott, I got this man just kind of twisting out in the wind. I mean, Jordan love had one great half of a season, lit it up. You can't take away from what the numbers and the results were in the second half of the season, finishing six and two, going into the postseason, beating up on them Dallas Cowboys, 32 touchdowns, 4,000 plus yards passing. Yeah, I think he's proven it, but it says a lot when a guy who's had a half a season of greatness gets $55 million or will be getting $55 million.
You know what? Let's take a listen to his general manager, Brian out with the Packers. He talked about why he feels also good given this man, all of this money when he hasn't played for a long time.
Listen to this. I think what gave it gives me comfort is that I know that he's going to work to be whatever he can be, the best version of himself. He's done that consistently since he's been here. And to see him, his learning and his growth over that time, I don't expect that to change. I think that's the one thing, again, that I feel really good about is that, because of the contract, we're not going to ask him to do anything more than he's been doing. We want to be himself and keep doing what he's been doing. If he does that, then I really don't think there's a limit on what he can accomplish. Oh, okay.
Uh-huh. They gave him $55 million. So now he has to throw 30 plus touchdowns. They want him to mop the floor. They want him to cut the grass. They want him to do community service.
I don't know what else you're going to ask the guy to do with the small sample size. They don't want him to do nothing. Show up and play football. And I guess that's the one thing Jordan Love knows what to do. He knows how to do it. He's been doing it and balling at a high level since he got picked out of Utah State. He's been doing this and growing, learning behind Aaron Rogers. And I know this man has to feel so happy to not have to be in a quarterback room with Aaron Rogers. Maybe he deserves the money for having to have shared airspace with Aaron Rogers. Jordan Love, he talked about getting this money, getting this green, getting this paper.
I guess this digital currency because not a lot of people use green. Jordan Love says it feels good to get this deal. You know, I think just in my, so far in my career, there's been so many question marks, you know, getting drafted here and being behind Aaron and not knowing what that whole situation would be like and, you know, where I would be, where I would get my opportunity. So it's been humbling, you know, and just something that I've had to work in the background, like I said, and just keep working and staying true to myself and finding ways to get better and being patient, trusting the process. So there's, I think there's just been a lot of question marks on and not knowing, but I think that's the NFL. There's a lot of unknown. Everybody is, you know, trying to be their best and get that next contract.
So it's definitely very rewarding. He shouldn't talk about trusting the process. He should, he should not do that. Okay. Last time I heard anything about trusting a process, it has not worked out in Philadelphia.
So stay away from that one. Jordan Love, hopefully throwing a football to a healthy Christian Watson, Romeo Dobbs. Jordan Love's going to be around a long time throwing to a lot of people. Hopefully they can find success. I expect them to get back to the playoffs as a wild card team at minimum. What does their head coach think about this situation? What does their head coach Matt LaFleur think about Jordan Love and what he's going to do, what he's going to be asked moving into the future?
We've seen a lot of flashes. He always had the talent. There's a reason he was drafted in the first round. I mean, the talent was always there.
It's just the consistency which he would go out there and perform. Obviously there's a lot to learn when you come to this level, not only fundamentally for the quarterback, but from a protection standpoint and having complete command of the offense. Now, forget, forget all of that. Let's get down to brass tacks. And we had this conversation last week. Green Bay Packer fans have been very fortunate. Green Bay Packer fans have hit the jackpot pretty much over the last, I don't know, 20 to 30 years with their quarterback play.
We got a lot of NFL teams that have been searching high, low, near, far, over, under to find a franchise QB. The Green Bay Packers have gone from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. They go from a three-time NFL MVP and they move on to a guy who's a four-time NFL MVP. They go from one quarterback in Brett Favre, who won a Super Bowl championship, to another quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, who won a Super Bowl championship.
Like this, this does not happen for most teams. The succession plan doesn't happen and even the Green Bay Packers have had to deal with some issues. Moving on from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, from Aaron Rodgers to now Jordan Love.
It ain't easy at the transition period, but it's typically paid off. And when you're now getting $55 million a year, and yeah, is he going to be the highest paid quarterback for the next, I don't know, eight months? Maybe. Maybe with Lawrence and Joe Burrow, but the fact is people don't care about that. The fans in Green Bay, they want results. The fans in Green Bay are expecting a championship. I mean, is Jordan Love overpaid?
No, I've heard people arguing about that. No, he's not. They paid him the money. They're going to pay him for future progress and future success. This man deserves the money. This is the going rate right now. But there's going to be pressure on this dude to perform in the minute that he has a slump, I can call it a sophomore slump, even though the dude got drafted five years ago, four years ago.
People just need to have some patience here. He's going to earn his money. I think he'll be good, but there's going to be pressure. Is he going to win an MVP? I don't know. Is he going to win a Super Bowl?
I don't know. But that's the expectation when you're making this type of money. He's not sitting behind Aaron Rodgers anymore. He has to go out there and earn his keep. And Jordan Love, knowing that he's making 55 mil, one of the highest paid quarterbacks ever, he understands this comes with a big responsibility.
I've always said this. I feel like just being an NFL quarterback, there's always pressure. I mean, you say being a first round pick, there's pressure, become the starter, there's pressure, but there's always pressure. And I think that's, you know, part of the job that we signed up for. You got to find ways to deal with that pressure and handle as best you can to be the best player you can be every day and be able to show up and kind of block all the noise out, block the pressure out. And that kind of goes into mental how you can handle some of the stuff that's thrown at you and just try and be at your best every day. But there's always pressure. There's no hiding that.
But I don't think this, you know, I've been in some pretty pressure situations, so I think there's always going to be that, but just find a way to navigate through this and handle it as best I can. Good luck to Jordan Love. There's no training wheels.
There's no what do we have? Everybody knows who he is. And they're going to expect him to keep up with the pace that he had towards the end of last season when the Packers turned this season around, finished 6-2, went to the postseason, smacked around the Dallas Cowboys and then lost to the team that represented the NFC and the Super Bowl in the 49ers. I don't know if the Packers are going to go that damn far.
You better start going to the playoffs every year. Plus people will be giving him a hard time. Congratulations to Jordan Love. This man went from sitting behind Aaron Rodgers to making $55 million a year. I wonder what Aaron Rodgers feels about that.
And not really. I think he has his hands occupied with the New York Jets. It's the JR Sportbree Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. We are just getting started. We're just getting warmed up. We'll talk about Aaron Rodgers' frustration with the Jets. You know what?
We still got to spend time. We'll get into Tua Tongaveloa. What about him and his new contract? Is he now going to all of a sudden play better when it gets cold outside? We'll get into Tua, his deal. We'll hear from his coach.
We're going to talk some Olympics. And you know what? As a matter of fact, Jordan Love had to spend some time sitting behind Aaron Rodgers before he got his chance and opportunity. Yesterday, Team USA basketball beat a Serbia and the Joker.
And someone who did not see any time yesterday? Jason Tatum. This man just won a championship and did not play.
You know what? We'll hear from Steve Kerr, get his reasoning on the other side. We'll get into Tua. We'll talk MLB trade deadline. We got Grant Hill. You got beef with Tatum. Or excuse me, Brown. Brown got beef with Hill. We got a lot to talk about. You know what? You're locked in. Congratulations.

That's 855-212-4227. I took a Friday off. It's the summertime.
I come back. Jordan Love has a contract. Tua Tonga-Velloa has a contract. Tua's making $53 million a year.
Look around. Jordan Love is getting $55 million a year. You would think that whenever Dak gets paid by the Dallas Cowboys, I assume at the end of the season, Dak is probably going to surpass all of them. He's probably going to make $58 million plus, maybe $60 million a year. Possibly. Everybody's just getting money, right?
The money is there. What can you say? 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. Let's get to the phones. I did mention to you about Jason Tatum not playing yesterday in the United States of America's Olympic opener against Serbia. We'll get into that. We'll talk to him. We got a lot to do, but let's get to Greg in Michigan. Hey, Greg, you're on the JR Sportbree Show here on the Infinity Sports Network. How are you? JR, Mr. Positive, thanks for taking my call.
Wow, you've got a lot of great topics. Real quick, these quarterbacks that are getting these outrageous amounts of money. I know that football is king. I know the revenue's there, but it just seems, my friend, the injuries, the inexperience to give it to them that quickly, wow. I know that there's not a lot of great backup quarterbacks on each of the teams, but it's just an outrageous amount of money.
I'm glad that Jordan got the money, but wow. Look at Joe Burrow. Will he ever be the same?
Will he ever be back to square one? In the case of Joe Burrow, what they are concerned more so about is his health. This is still football. This is still the NFL. They can guarantee guys a certain amount of money and try to give them money up front as a signing bonus, but we know, look, you can go back to the bonus, but we know, look, you can go down and your career can end. In the case of Joe Burrow, it was his wrist.
You would hope that it's no longer an ACL. Everybody comes with risk, especially at the quarterback position. Dak Prescott, the guy who's still waiting on a contract, this man broke his ankle in the most gruesome fashion possible for America to see, and he's still got $40 million. These deals are certainly risky. The money is certainly there, especially when you got a salary cap that is now more than $200, $230, $240, $250, $260 million.
The money has to be spent somewhere, and everybody is a beneficiary, especially the guys right now, who are the most important players on the teams, and that's the quarterback. So you're right. You're right. And JR, real quick. Yes.
Wow. I love that LeBron and KD came through yesterday, and what a travesty not playing Tatum. I mean, he's worth $60 million a year. He's a superstar. He wins the NBA championship, and you don't play him. He doesn't have to really play that much defense.
Just his shooting skills should put him in for 10 to 15 minutes. Who's this Mr. White? What team did he play for? I'm not familiar with him, really. Oh, Derek White? He just helped the Celtics win a championship. That's their tough, hard-nosed, do-it-all, rebound, shoot.
He was almost an all-star for the Boston Celtics this past year. He's very good. Thank you, my friend. Hey, love you. Everybody go for your dreams. Thanks, JR.
Thank you so much, Greg, for calling from Michigan. I get it. There's a lot of people who took issue with Jason Tatum not playing yesterday for Team USA. Especially, you go online, I assume a lot of the people were from Boston.
And it is quite peculiar. If you take a look at Team USA, they beat Serbia. The final score was 110 to 84. And they started off slow. Serbia started off, the game was like 10 to 2 Serbia.
And it's like, uh-oh, United States of America is going to have it in. And then, all of a sudden, they went on a run. And then Kevin Durant got off the bench. And in 17 minutes, 17 minutes, Kevin Durant had 23 points.
He was eight of eight. He was perfect from the field. He took a shot at the end of the game, and he missed. And it was just a garbage-time bucket.
There was no need. He was five of five from downtown and yet a shorter three-point line at the International Games. And so, Kevin Durant hasn't played at all.
He didn't play in any of the five warm-up games for Team USA. And he goes out there like he can, he rolls out of bed, and he just scores, okay? Then you have LeBron James, rolled out of bed and scored at almost 40 years old. 21 points, nine assists, seven rebounds in 27 minutes.
What? It's not even a regulation NBA game. And he's out there absolutely lighting them up. LeBron James, just at the end of the game, he just took over.
He's like, I got this. We're good. And they blew him out 110-84. Jokic had 20 points, eight assists, five rebounds. Bogdanovic from the Hawks. For Team Serbia, he went out and had 14 points. And everybody's talking about Tatum. Where the hell and when was Tatum going to play?
I got no issue. Like the fact is, the team is just full of all-stars. I mean, there were people, and we'll get into this later in the show, people were looking at how could you not put Brown on the team?
Well, there's no Jalen Brown, and it's Tatum, but then you put White. It's a 40-minute game. Where the hell are you playing everybody? And who's going to get shot down in the Eagle Department enough just to play Garbage Time? He could have played Tatum yesterday in Garbage Time.
Hey, go out there, make it work. Would that be more, what's more of a waste of time? Having him suit up in Garbage Time or just not play at all?
Halliburton didn't play at all either. He's one of the best point guards in the game. He is the younger guy in the group, but come on now.
I'm not, Hickey, are you upset? Does it bother you that they didn't play Tatum? No, I'm with you in part because like you said, who's coming off the court? Like you look at the dynamics, you look at the position where Tatum is playing. You're not taking LeBron off. You're not taking KD off with how well he played yesterday. So you look at the rotations and you look at even guys like Derek White playing.
He had a specific skill set that fit the lineup around him. I don't think it's crazy that Tatum didn't play. I also don't think that anyone can judge Tatum or try to knock him for being a less of a player than he is because he didn't see time in the first game of the Olympics on an All-Star team. Listen, Kevin Durant, I'm not exactly the same. Kevin Durant is, is Tatum stretched out by like another four inches in height.
That's what it is. Like they just, they, they, they score. Tatum scores. You don't necessarily want him doing anything, but Hey man, do me a favor, go out there, get buckets and play defense. They didn't need that when Kevin Durant came back and still, even at his age, 35, 36 years old, the man played 17 minutes and had 23 points. He's the all time leading scorer in team USA basketball. He's one of the best and greatest scorers that basketball has ever seen. Tatum, he's he'll play in the next game.
Okay. And the world will move on and he'll be fine. Now, Steve Kurt did address this. Steve Kurt did talk about this. He talked to ESPN and this is what he had to say about Tatum not playing.
Yeah, it's tough. But Jason handled it really well. I talked to him today before the game that it may play out this way, just with Kevin coming back and the, the lineups that I wanted to get to. But that'll change, you know, Jason's going to play. Every game is going to be different based on match-ups. He's a total pro.
He's, you know, first team All-NBA three years in a row. I felt like an idiot not playing him. But you know, 40 minute game. You can't play more than 10.
You really can't. And, you know, so I just, I think he's, he's an amazing guy, great player and handled it beautifully. And, you know, he'll be back out there next game. Yeah, the next game, the team USA basketball, they will be out on the court, taking on a familiar foe. We'll almost beat them. And team USA has South Sudan coming up next.
Okay. I don't know if it's going to be as close as the last one was. That game is on Wednesday. See what team USA does.
I don't know if it's going to be as close as last time, but it'd be fun. Somebody who did suck in the game yesterday, Joel MB congratulations, four points. He could have played for France for all of us. Team USA doesn't need this.
Maybe it'll come up eventually. LeBron James. Well, he couldn't praise Tatum, but he showed love to KD. Listen to this.
He told us to NBC. I think we just bring out the best in one another. We're very seasoned to the people games.
You know, we played a lot of international basketball when it comes to the Olympics or world championships. So, you know, to have KD on our side, to have KD on my side, it's a treat for sure. Yeah. And enjoy it while we have it. In another four years, somebody else has to step up.
Not the 36 and a 40 year old. Come on now. Team USA basketball. Do better. Maybe Tatum will lead the charge.
Maybe. It's the JR sport re-show here with you on the infinity sports network. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. We'll take a break. When we come back on the other side, I did tell you about Tua Tonga Veloa and his contract. We're going to get into the major league baseball trade deadline. I mentioned Jalen Brown and Grant Hill. These guys are just going at it.
So we got a lot to do. You're listening to the JR sport brief. It is the JR sport re-show here on the infinity sports network. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. We talked about Jordan Love and his new contract. What he got from the Packers.
This man had to sit behind Aaron Rodgers. We talked about Jason Tatum. He did a lot of sitting yesterday for Team USA basketball. Didn't play a minute against Serbia. They didn't need him. Like, did they really? Come on.
Probably would have beat Serbia if Kevin Durant wasn't there. Well, maybe not. Who knows?
23 points in 17 minutes is rather aggressive. Anyway, also, how about this? We're going to have Chris Perkins joining us from the Sun Sentinel to talk Dolphins. He's going to talk to us about Tua.
And we'll do that next hour. And we didn't dive into Tua. So let's get into Tua now at the top of the hour. Let's talk some MLB trade deadline.
And so we got a lot to do. Tua Tagovailoa got his deal. 53 million dollars a year. The Miami Dolphins to me just seem like, and I hate to say it like this. They're like a, they represent the city. Like they're a glamour team. This is a squad, especially on the offense.
It's built for speed. You got Tyreek Hill. You have Waddle. You got Odell Beckham Jr. Whatever's left to him. I still think he can be a positive contributor. If he's healthy, you know, give him 600 yards or 5, 6, 7 touchdowns.
And I've said this and we witnessed this. I don't trust Tua Tagovailoa when the game's mad. I don't trust him in the cold. I don't, I don't trust him in Cleveland or Cincinnati or Buffalo or Kansas City. If it's not on turf, if it's not 70 degrees, I'm just like, am I supposed to believe that the Dolphins are going to win a championship? I just, I don't see Tua hoisting a Lombardi. The Dolphins had no choice but to pay him. And I know he's thrilled that he got paid. And he knows that there's supposed to be some expectations here. How about winning a playoff game? Something that the Dolphins aren't familiar with.
They haven't seen something like this happen in this century. Tua Tagovailoa says, I know I got my money, but now comes some great expectations. Listen to this. Now that all of this is done, this is behind us. We know like heavy, heavy is the crown, you know, so whoever's wearing that like right now, I'm the highest paid I'm the highest paid employee in this, in this office. Like, I mean, I, I got to get my, you know, whatever together.
I got to get that right and get our guys moving in there in the direction that we need to go, you know, to be able to do those things. It doesn't sound too inspiring to me, but I don't need him to sound inspiring. I need him to go out there on a football field and actually win some games that, that would be most important.
I don't think anybody gives a damn what he says in a press conference. People care about what he does on the field. And I got to tell you this, if you think about Tua Tagovailoa against winning teams in his career above 500, this man has a seven and 14 record. Ain't all that great.
There's levels to this. Tua Tagovailoa might be making $53 million. He's not Josh Allen. Nobody's Patrick Mahomes. Tua's in that second tier of QBs.
Come on now. Tyreek Hill can vouch for him and say that he's the greatest and be happy that he got paid. He's good.
He's not one of the best. His head coach, he got no choice but to bring him up though, right? Mike McDaniel, his own guy, own head coach, was a real proponent of getting this deal done. I mean, what's the alternative for Mike McDaniel? Who the hell was he going to coach at quarterback?
He had none. And so Tua, he's very happy about his head coach, basically sticking up for him. Listen. I've been told from several birdies that are, you know, here in the facility that are upstairs as well, you know, that he, he went to bat for me the, the day that I went out and practiced 11 on 11, seven on seven, before we went on that little break, that he went to bat for me with, you know, our owner. And, you know, I, I won't go into details of things that I heard were said, but just know, like, he, you know, he, he is what he says.
He, he says what he told me and he, he did what, what I was thinking he would do for, for me and not just for me, but for any other player, you know, so I'm very grateful for that. What else, what else were they going to do? They have Mike White as their backup quarterback.
Okay. And I don't give a damn what Mike White did for the New York Jets and, and made the New York Jet fans excited for a limited amount of time. The Miami Dolphins are, are one of the first NFL teams to have to face a new reality, to have to draft the quarterback and figure out, are we keeping him? Is he good enough to help us win? And oh, well, forget if he's good enough to help us win. If he's not just okay, then we're screwed after this.
There is no other alternative. They drafted to a fifth in 2020. What are they going to do is let them walk at the end of the year and let them move on with his life.
So they can do what? Just go into the quarterback doldrums? They had to pay Tua. Whether or not he's in that second tier quarterback or not, everybody can't wait for Dak Prescott to make $60 million a year.
So everybody else can just chill out and relax. Eventually, Tua's deal is going to be a discount sooner than later, right? Well, what does the head coach feel about this?
He spoke as well. Take a listen to Mike McDaniel discuss Tua Tongaveloa and his new deal. From my perspective, I'm happy, but I also expected it to get done. And now that it's done, it's about moving forward because, you know, it's maybe a handshake and a smile, but it's not a celebration. Oh, hickey, it's a celebration for Tua and his family. I don't know what Mike McDaniel is talking about. Shoot, not a celebration for who? For the Dolphins?
Yeah, they got to write the check. They want the Lombardi celebration, but they're fine. Hickey and I'm serious. This is such a wild story. A year ago, he was having to debate whether or not he was going to keep on playing due to his head issues and concussions. You fast forward a year, the man got $53 million a season coming. That's a hell of a turnaround. That is, and that's why it doesn't make any sense for what the Dolphins did.
Like, what's the rush? You highlighted his play on the field against good teams, very poor. And we haven't, outside of that, we haven't really talked even about the health. I mean, last year was the anomaly for his career in terms of staying healthy for a full season. He hasn't been able to do that at Alabama or so far early in his Dolphins career. You got two negatives right now working against this contract. It's bizarre why the Dolphins thought right now is the time to give to all this money and they think it's going to work out.
Oh boy. You don't think this is a good deal? No, I think they could regret it as soon as January comes around. What's he going to do? Pop his hip out again? A concussion? If we see the same play like we saw last year and it's another first round postseason exit, or even worse, they don't make the playoffs, if you're sitting there looking around going, well our quarterback can't play well in the big games and now we just locked him up for another four years? Yeah. What the hell are we going to do?
I think that's what's going to happen. I mean, the AFC is ridiculously competitive. I mean, their own division in the AFC East is ridiculously competitive. I mean, outside of New England, you know, if Aaron Rodgers is healthy, the Jets are not going to be no pushovers. Buffalo is still going to be good. We don't know if they're going to be Super Bowl good.
They're still trying to get over the hump. Miami is a three team race. This is tough. And that doesn't even count the AFC North, which is tough. And I already named the teams. You start taking Tua out of Miami and you start throwing him up in Baltimore and Cleveland, throw them up into Kansas City.
When we've seen how that ended, I'm not confident. And I get it. Salary cap has gone up. Quarterback salaries have gone up. And so have the expectations. I think a lot of fans are savvy enough to understand like, yeah, they're getting lots of money because the money is there. That ain't going to change anything. That Tua is one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the game. He may be this for what? A year, two years?
In that space? I just I don't have any confidence in him that the Dolphins are going to win a championship while he's quarterback. They're going to win games. They might win a playoff game here or there. What's going to happen as Tyrikio gets older?
What's going to happen when the target changes? Dolphins will be good enough to be good. Not good enough to win no damn championship. I'm sorry. My apologies to my fans and friends down in Miami. It's the JR Sport Reshow here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. We're going to take a break. When we come back, talk some more Team USA basketball, get into some more NFL. I told you we got Chris Perkins coming to talk to a next hour as well. It's the JR Sport Reshow, the Infinity Sports Network.
