Just ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. Hank, you ever try to focus in on something and then just get distracted? All the time. All the time. I got so many screens on here in the studio, I got distracted for a minute.

Just got distracted. Anyway, it's for basketball. The Celtics are getting ready to play the Dallas Mavericks in about 35 minutes down in Dallas. No Kristaps Porzingis, he's out tonight with that leg injury that they say is unrelated to his calf strain. It's on his other leg, is it related, not related, who knows, probably is.

The world will never know. Now let's see if Dallas gets a victory. They should. If I was a betting man, and I'm not, I'd bet on Dallas to walk away with a victory tonight. At least tonight they got to get one, right? At least let it be now. And if I'm Kristaps Porzingis, maybe we never see him again for the series. I mean, come on, it's Kristaps Porzingis.

That's the news today that we just got about an hour ago. And in the big news today, unfortunately, we learned of the passing of Jerry West, 86 years old. This man was not only a 14 time All-Star, an NBA champ, an NBA Finals MVP in a series that he lost. He was an executive, helped the Lakers go into a title contender, helped the Golden State Warriors, helped the Memphis Grizzlies. This man was amazing. He's going to be in a Hall of Fame three times.

Who does that? And people barely get in a Hall of Fame once. And so let's let's just cut to the chase. If you missed a minute of the show, you can hit rewind on the free Odyssey app. Thank you so much to Marcus Thompson from The Athletic, who joined us last hour to talk about the legacy of Jerry West. He had an opportunity to meet him and speak with him. Excellent interview with Marcus. Talked about the Lakers from the past up until now. Thank you so much to Marcus.

Excellent interview. Go ahead and hit rewind. But right now it's Wednesday. And damn, it has been Wednesday all day long.

And on Wednesdays, I've been doing this on this network. I don't know, for four years now. Yeah, four years.

I've been doing this on the Internet, period, for, I don't know, almost 15 years now. Damn, is it? Yeah, it's a long time. It's a top six list.

What do I do? I give you a top six or something. And tonight, thank you so much to Jerry West for the inspiration. Thank you so much, Jerry West, for the opportunity to talk about some of the individuals who have basically helped carry the flag, the torchbearers of the NBA, the people who shed a light, some of the most important figures that we've seen in the league. And this is real corny nowadays to talk about the face of the NBA.

It's thrown around a lot. Who's the flag bearers? Is Anthony Edwards going to be the face of the league? And can this guy be the face of the league? We can throw that out the window for now, because we're going to talk about individuals who actually were and maybe are the face of the league. The people who have carried the torch and have waved the flag. So without further ado, it's time to give you a new top six list. We do it every single Wednesday. Top six faces of the league since its inception in 1946.

Let's go. Six, five, four, three, two, one. It's time to get JR's latest top six list only on the JR Sport Brief. It is the JR Sport Brief show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm bringing you a new top six list as I do every single Wednesday and tonight. Thank you so much to the contributions of Jerry West. It's a basketball and to society.

He was an important figure. And as an overall, we're talking about the top six faces that the NBA has ever seen in 78 years of existing. And you know what number we're going to start off with? This one. Number six.

And it's quite apparent, it's quite clear. I'm going to go to the individual who inspired the list. That is Jerry West. You want to talk about a face of the NBA? The man is literally the logo of the NBA.

He's immortalized. And for all the talking conversations that they were at one point about making Michael Jordan the logo, that NBA logo is going nowhere. OK, not in my lifetime. I'm going to be long dead before they decide to even change that logo.

And why would you? It's global. It's everywhere. It's on every piece of merchandise, everything that you could imagine that has to deal with the highest level of basketball. It deals with an individual who is a high level human being. OK, a 14 time All-Star winning an NBA MVP and a losing effort. He has a championship.

Damn it. He won most outstanding player at college at West Virginia and another losing effort in a national championship game. A winner as a player, as an executive and as a person, I want you to take a listen to Jerry West. He sat down with Paul George and Jerry West was asked about being the logo, being the face of a global brand like the NBA.

And of course, he was humble as hell. I'll tell you one thing, the greatest thing about being a logo, you get paid a lot of money for it. It actually made about two cents off of that. Hypothetically, Adam Silver gave you the opportunity to pick who should be the next logo. I would never do that.

It's disrespectful to other players. Here's what my response is. That's me.

I'm flattered. Do you have any idea what the logo was about? It was about marketing.

The league started to grow and that's when they decided to start trying to market the league. There were five guys. No one knew who they were. No one. They were all silhouettes. The guy who said it would fit better on the apparel and stuff, that's who did it. To me, you wish that no one knew who it was.

I've often thought, what would I like for people to think about me? He was a good guy and he cared. That would be it. Nothing more. You got to appreciate that, right?

God rest his soul and condolences to his family. If you want to tell me that there's a guy who more of a face of the league than him. How? You can't.

Impossible. I got Jerry West at number six on my list. The top six faces of the NBA. Jerry West is six.

It's time to roll down to number five. Oh, man, this this is a tough one. Well, not really. You want to talk about a thorn in Jerry West's side?

Well, you know, we'll wait on that one. Let's go to someone who was a teammate, had to commiserate with him. Someone who was on the back end when they won their only championship together in 1972. This man also happened to be a Los Angeles Laker.

He happened to be a warrior as well. And number five, you want to talk about the face of the NBA? I'm looking at Wilt Chamberlain. This man, four time MVP, seven time scoring champ. He holds 72 records in the league.

I'm sure J.J. Redick would hate his guts. We also know about his 100 points in a game in Hershey, Pennsylvania, against the New York Knicks. This man is the only dude in NBA history to average 30 points in 20 rebounds in a season. He did it seven times. You don't believe me? Believe somebody who's here in Atlanta with me. His name is Dominique Wilkins.

This is what he told my friend to kill spikes at the behind the mask podcast. Listen, who was the best basketball player that you've seen that you really admire that game? When I watched Wilt Chamberlain, listen, he got still over 60 some NBA records that would never be broken. The guy averaged 50 and 30 rebounds a game for one season.

I can't believe it when I read. I saw a video, an old tape of him, where a guy goes to shoot it over and he lobs it high. Chamberlain jumps and his fingertips is at the top of the backboard when he catches a shot.

I've never seen anything like that. That's unhuman, you know, for someone to do that. And so what he did and his dominance and with the physicality that he played with, where people were basically trying to take him out and they couldn't. He was too strong.

I mean, he was bouncing 650 pounds before games. The guy was an incredible. So you start with Russell, you start with guys like Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem. Those guys, those guys was there was before their time. Yeah, Wilt Chamberlain wasn't afraid to spit on you if you asked him how the weather was.

Hey, thank you, Kareem, for the amazing story. You want to talk about a face of the NBA? Wilt Chamberlain basically dominated everybody. At number six, I gave you Jerry West. And number five, I give you Wilt Chamberlain. What's the next number face of the NBA? Number four. This is the man.

He was abusing them all. And number four on the list. Hey, the Celtics are playing tonight. I give you Bill Russell. You want to talk about a face of the NBA? It's not just because of his 11 championships.

By the way, he won eight straight. By the way, Jerry West hates the Celtics guts with good reason. They are the reason he only has one championship that in the Knicks. Bill Russell wasn't just a defensive force and winning championships for the Boston Celtics. Bill Russell was a civil rights icon playing in a city that in a lot of cases, they didn't accept them. They didn't love him back. And he wasn't afraid to let them know. And Bill Russell stood up for what was right in a time where, well, Bill Russell could have spat right back on a lot of people. You don't believe me? This is someone. Yeah, he got 11 championships.

Damn, that's a lot. In 2011, Bill Russell got a presidential medal of freedom. Listen to some guy named President Barack Obama talk about this man. Whenever someone looks up at all six nine of Bill Russell, I just did. I always feel small next to him and asks, are you a basketball player? Surprisingly, he gets this more than you think. This question. He says, no.

He says, that's what I do. That's not what I am. I'm not a basketball player.

I am a man who plays basketball. Bill Russell, the man, is someone who stood up for the rights and dignity of all men. He marched with King.

He stood by Ali. When a restaurant refused to serve the black Celtics, he refused to play in the scheduled game. He endured insults and vandalism, but he kept on focusing on making the team teammates who he loved better players. How how could Bill Russell not be a face of the league? You know, everybody could talk about a certain guy named Michael Jordan. You want to talk about championships and accomplishments? You want to talk about his life outside of the basketball court?

How he dominated the 60s? Bill Russell. Oh, yeah, he was one of the faces of the NBA helped set the groundwork. I got Bill Russell here at number four. Top six faces of the NBA. Let's keep the list rolling.

Number three. What a shocker, right? We have another Boston Celtic.

What a shocker, right? We got to talk about an individual who paired up with another guy. Really put the battery in the back of the NBA in the 80s. Every great form of entertainment is always about storytelling.

How can you rope people in from beginning to end? This man was was one half of what helped change the NBA and propelled it forward. And number three, you want to talk about a face of the league? I'm giving you Larry Berg, a three time NBA champion in the 80s. A three time MVP. He was one half of another guy that I'll tell you about. But we know about Larry Bird, right?

Oh, you don't listen to someone who opposed him quite a bit in the 80s. His name is Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And this is what he had to tell Fox Sports about Larry Bird. The best guy I played against might have been, you know, Larry Bird, someone like that. How good was Bird? People, I don't think people, people look at him and think, oh, he's a white guy, a slow guy.

Chubby white guy. He wore us out, you know, because he just, this was this muscle here, the one between his ears. That was his best, you know, because he made the three points and he had assists and rebounded steals. He was always at the right place at the right time on the court. One of the great players, you know, I had the opportunity to play.

Yeah, I think Kareem would know. And if you want to talk about Larry Bird and being one of the faces of the league, there's a reason why. Because he was the yin. Then this next guy, he was the yang. What's the next number face of the league?

Number two. Ervin Magic. Johnson, to be able to be able to tell a story between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson from college all the way to the NBA for the better part of the 80s.

It helped elevate things in a way that we haven't seen since. I don't know now when people are like, oh, my God, I need to watch women's basketball because of, I don't know, some angel Reese and another girl named, I don't know, Caitlin Clark. At least that's what Magic Johnson said. And I'll tell you this, Magic Johnson, a five time NBA champion, a three time finals MVP. Oh, he had his battles dating all the way back to college with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Well, I don't want to say he made basketball fun again, but a six foot nine point guard in the 80s. Hey, when have we seen this before? When have we seen a rookie go out here and help a team win a championship? The answer is never. When have we seen a back and forth between a Magic and a Bird?

The answer was never until the 80s. They helped lift the NBA up into a place where America said, oh, I'm going to root for Magic. Oh, I'm going to root for Bird and Magic. Just listen to him on all the smoke. Describe what was Showtime. We just played so well together and we were running. And so Showtime came in because, man, I was coming down that fast, break down the middle. And man, I get to no looking left, right, throwing it between my legs, behind my back.

And then, you know, the brothers, Byron Duncan, James Duncan, Kareem Duncan and the people would just go crazy. When I give it to you, I did my part. I got them up out their seats. See, I got them up out their seats. Now you got to do the rest.

Now, if you don't do the rest, I ain't going to give it to you no more. So we got it. We got it. They used to call me Buck.

Buck, we got it. So they go in. I said, once I give it to them, they would finish it, man.

People would go crazy. That's where Showtime came in. You know, it was a show within the game and they started calling us the Showtime Lakers.

And it was beautiful. You want to know how important both Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were to the NBA faces of the league? You want to know how important they are and how important they were? Even when the 80s were done and we hit the fast forward button to 1992. These men went through their own issues.

Backs, viruses, injuries. These two men were still on the dream team in 1992 going out to Barcelona to represent the league. As David Stern was trying to grow the game globally. Faces of the NBA.

Oh, hell yeah. Larry Bird at three. Magic Johnson at two.

The J.R. sport show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. In honoring Jerry West, I'm giving you a top six list as we take a look. At the top faces that we've seen in the NBA in its 78 year history.

It's the J.R. Sport Brief show here on the Infinity Sports Network. NBA Finals about to get started in about 10 minutes. Game three down in Dallas.

No Chris Staps Porzingis here on the Infinity Sports Network. You know, we're honoring Jerry West. Every Wednesday I give you a new top six list. And tonight we're taking a look at some of the faces of the NBA. The top six faces of the NBA. Individuals have been flag bearers and torch bearers and have pretty much they've been iconic figures since since day one in a league that's been around for 78 years right now. I'm about to share with you who I have at the top of the list.

Let me give you a quick recap. And number six. It is Jerry West. The logo. The man whose image has just adorned the NBA since the creation of its logo since about the late 60s.

And number five. I gave you an icon someone who a lot of people look at like a Paul Bunyan-esque figure in the NBA. A mythical magical 100 points. I'm taking a look at Will Chamberlain. This man still owns some of the biggest scoring records in NBA history.

72 of them to be exact, including 100 points. And number four. This man is a consummate champion with 11 of them eight straight with the Boston Celtics. He's also a civil rights icon God rest his soul. We lost him then Tom flies we lost him two years ago at number four I gave you Bill Russell.

And number three. I gave you Larry Bird. Part of the big explosion of the NBA in the 80s you couldn't have a Larry Bird without a charming Magic Johnson. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson gave gave people, individuals to root for the love to hate the watch the respect.

So if I got Bird at three, and I have Magic at two, as the NBA exploded in the 80s, going from tape delay to live. If you want to talk about the face of the league. The man who just took it to another level. I think we know who represents this number. Number one. It's two initials, M and J. Michael Jordan.

Yeah, you knew that already. And do I need to go on a full explanation as to, you know why Michael Jordan has been the most important face and the top face of the NBA Well, he helped take things to another level. You know, you can look at everybody setting the stage for what took place before him but he was at the right time in the right place to really push the game even more global to set the business up to help the salaries increase. Michael Jordan. Okay, we can talk about Magic and his 25 mil over 25 years, Michael Jordan at the back end of his career say okay give me 33 mil a year, and things went to hell.

The league went into a lockout. You want to talk about influential individuals on planet Earth. There were a couple of Michaels in the 90s that people looked at and just said whoa on Earth. Michael Jackson Michael Jordan, simple as that. You want to talk about one of the first athletes to become a billionaire Oh yeah there's that that Michael Jordan guy. There's a global brand in the Jordan brand that even NBA teams I mean they got the apparel on today. And you know what, when it when it comes to basketball.

You want to talk about him being the biggest face that we've seen in the league. Well, I want you to take a listen to Michael Jordan tell you about it. And, interestingly enough, Michael Jordan is just like, people might debate about the best players, the best teams.

Listen to Michael Jordan tell you about it courtesy of the NBA. People always debated. Who's the greatest player of all time.

Dumb question. It should be, who's the greatest team of all time. You know, there are so many teams to choose from. The 91 Chicago Bulls.

Sorry Showtime. The 92 Bulls back to back. 93 Bulls first three people. 97 Bulls, even with the flu. 98 Bulls.

No push off. And my favorite. 96 Chicago Bulls.

72 wins. Tough to beat that. What? You think there's someone else? Prove it. You heard what Michael said. Prove it. That's it.

Prove it. Michael Jordan number one on the list. You talk about the faces of the NBA. Oh yeah, there's been more than six influential figures.

More than six, of course. These have been some of the real flag bearers that I think as an overall have had much more of an overall influence in where the league has gotten. These are the these are the fame names. These are the iconic figures.

That they've held the torch and they've held it down. And number six, I gave you Jerry West, the logo. And number five, I gave you Wilt Chamberlain. And number four, I gave you Bill Russell. And number three, I gave you Larry Bird. And number two, I gave you Magic Johnson. The two of them for what they did in the 80s. And the number one. Yeah, just some guy named Michael Jordan. There's a bunch of other names I could think of guys who have had some influence and I'm not I'm not going to name. I'm going to let you do it. The phone lines are open at eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven. It's eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven. We talk about flag bearers faces of the league.

Some of the most notable individuals who have had to carry the flag and carry the torch and move this league along a league that started in in nineteen forty six. And number six, I gave you Jerry West the logo. Number five, I gave you Will Chamberlain. And before I gave you Bill Russell and number three, I gave you Larry Bird. You can't have Bird without Magic. Magic Johnson at number two. Michael Jordan at numero uno. Shout outs to everybody listening on the Odyssey app. NBA finals are underway. Nice to see the Dallas Mavericks and their fans host their first finals since 2011. No Chris Staps, Porzingis. We don't know if he's even going to play the rest of this series following another leg injury. And so let's see if the Dallas Mavericks can at least minimum walk away with one.

Can you win one game with no Chris Staps? Can you win a few more? Let's hit the phone lines. Eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven. Alan is here from Toronto. You're on the J.R. support reshow. Alan, what's up?

Hi, J.R. This guy, Bob Cousy, he's ninety five. He's still alive.

And if he's listening right now, it's going to bring a smile to his face. He was a six time championship in his 13 year career, six time champion. And he was an assist leader for eight consecutive seasons. And he knew he introduced a new blend of ball handling and passing skills. You know, he was he was fantastic in that regard. And he was the first to reach four thousand five thousand six thousand assists. He wasn't that big.

He was six one hundred seventy five. And he was also a coach, too. He coached Boston College from sixty three to sixty nine. And he was in the coach in the NBA, too.

He coached for the Cincinnati Royals and the Kansas City Kings, too. So he's you know, he's right up there. He's six thousand nine hundred ninety five assists.

And number 14 is retired. He's every bit as good as Larry Bird or John Havlicek. Yeah, well, we ain't talking about who's better. We're talking about the individuals who were the face of the league. And I think a lot of that comes down to the popularity who was well known. And I think I'm not putting him in the plumber category of J.J. Redick. I mean, he was right there alongside Bill Russell for a good part of that Celtics run. But Bill Russell, as an individual, just just overshadowed him.

I would think in Celtics lore as an overall, I mean, you got a guy like Larry Bird who was overshadowed. And I think that that's that's a big part of it as well. Here's a here's a fact.

And thank you so much, Alan, for calling from Toronto. When you boil it down. Hickey, tell me if I'm wrong here. I know I am almost 100 percent certain. But Bob Cozy and Bill Russell played together. J.J. Redick would have been a hung from a stake and much more of a larger way. If he ever, ever said that Bill Russell was playing against firefighters and plumbers, if he thought that he caught heat by saying that about Bob Cozy, who was teammates with Bill Russell. Hickey, what would have happened if that came out of his mouth and he replaced Cozy with Russell? Yeah, he would maybe, maybe not have a job on TV.

I would say he's probably already out of the running as the next Celtics head coach when that opening comes. He would just be a lame podcaster. He would. He would be. What's this idiot that yelled at the lady in the locker room, Patrick Beverley? Oh, yeah. Like he he he wouldn't have he wouldn't have a gig the way he does now.

I could see J.J. Redick to being like, hey, subscribe to my pod. I'm not talking to you. Yeah, I know. Right. That it's kind of crazy.

I don't think I've ever heard it put in that perspective before. These two guys were teammates. But this is what this is what it's OK to say this about Bob Cozy. But if he would have said this about Bill Russell, hey, Bill Russell, who did he play against?

He's playing against. Yeah, Wilt Chamberlain. Everybody else was a fireman. Look, Adam Silver might have called him specifically and said, what are you doing? Like, knock it off. This man would have been exed out of so many jobs and conversations.

But God bless Bob Cozy, who's still here with us, by the way. But damn, it's this is this is a perfect example of how people can say anything and say crazy things. And sometimes one plus one doesn't equal to. You know, I mean, let's actually take a listen, because Jerry West, who I had at number six here on the list. We talked about this earlier. Jerry West was on Sirius XM about a year ago, and he was asked about these comments by J.J. Redick. Because Jerry West played against these guys. And you can you can't see it because you can only hear it.

Listen, imagine his face in the angst. I'll tell you, Jerry West is answering this question while rubbing his brow and kind of shaking his head like, oh, my God. Just take a listen. Obviously, the game is completely different.

The athletes are completely different. And I know J.J. just a little bit. He's a very smart kid and everything. Tell me what his career looked like. What did he do? That was. Determined games.

You have 20, every 12 points a game in the league. Hickey, are we and I guess you've got to be of a certain age. Are we running out of guys like this who can do it without, you know, like really trash talking? This is like he gave J.J. Redick a verbal spanking without being like a nasty you know what? Like a lot of these guys are so petty and hateful and underhanded and they got to they got to put things out in a tweet and Jerry was just like, yo, what did you do? He didn't have to drop an F bomb.

He didn't have to do any. And that's the type of thing that that that I miss is just getting honesty without having to have vitriol behind it. I'm sure he didn't appreciate it, but he told you exactly what was on his mind. I was going to say no cursing, no name calling, just kind of set it straight up and also to, I guess, didn't go out of his way to take a cheap shot or come on and kind of blindside him. I mean, the only reason why he's even talking about J.J. Redick in the first place is because obviously J.J. said the comments first. Jerry was not there just taking shots like we've seen other, you know, former players do at the current slash recently retired players that are in the league. He just like you said things from the ultimate competitor standpoint, set it point blank and just kind of set it how it is.

And J.J. Redick, as far as I know, he never had a response to that, did he? Nothing. I think you're right.

I hope not. What do you say to that? What do you say to Jerry West? Hey, Jerry, you were playing against him, too?

Oh, yeah. You beat him, Jerry. He said, hey, you.

Hey, Jerry West, you were playing against that other plumber, Bill Russell. You know, just I wish he would not. I mean, I'm joking, but I wish he would have said it. So he got chopped down. I mean, there's a respect element like if you're going to be a jerk, leave it to me, like leave that to me.

And I wouldn't even say something like that. You got to you got to respect the dudes who came before you. You don't want to chop him down. I'm glad he went right back at him and gave him a piece of his mind. We need more of that.

None of these hidden emojis and whatnot. I'm done with that. Like as much as I appreciate LeBron James as a as a basketball player and I really respect how he's carried himself like this.

Tom's was just like, I'm going to tweet out an hourglass emoji or I'm going to say this and then change my mind. He's a human being. He could do and say whatever he wants. But sometimes it's just like, bruh, just just hit the point. Like just hit the point.

Don't don't play the game. And yeah, I mean, you could think about influential figures. I don't think about LeBron James as being a face of the league. He has been more recently, but not one of the most important of all time. He's had to split a good majority of his peak in the Kobe Bryant space and the the Tim Duncan space. And then you also think about the Steph Curry space as great as he's been in the longevity and the money that he's made. And he's the most recognizable, the wealthiest. And he's an active billionaire as an NBA player. I don't think he's had the same type of influence that these other guys have had. You can say he's one of the best basketball players of all time.

Yeah. But I think he's had to share that space when Michael Jordan was playing. Michael Jordan was at the top of the totem pole and everybody looked at him and said, damn it, we got knocked that guy off and everybody failed. I mean, you look at a Bill Russell for what he did on the court and off like we've had guys who were the faces of the NBA. But I think LeBron James, would he be in the top 10? Yeah. My putting him above any of the guys that I named in regards to significance and importance to growing the game. No, no, I don't think so. Hickey, what are your thoughts on the list that I put together, man?

You got any any ideas, thoughts, whatnot? It's funny, the one guy I would definitely put on is the one he just trashed in LeBron James. I do think, you know, for his greatness alone, I get what you're saying in terms of, you know, he played in an era with other greats, but also in a lot of these greats that we're talking about played in eras and shared the spotlight as well. I just think for where he is in history, going to the finals 10 times, I know he won four and kind of jumped around more than a lot of the other guys on this list. So but I just for me, at least his greatness and his longevity as well, 21 years now going on 22 and his plays never really fallen off.

I would put him on the list. Yeah, the accomplishments are there. I just I just really think like the significance to him to the league. He's carried it. He's carried the torch. But he said that he's had to share it in a different way. You know what I'm saying? Like there's the longevity. This is the longevity.

Like he spans, he spans an era. This man, LeBron James, came in right after right after Michael Jordan. We didn't see him on the court. If we did, it would have been freaky as all hell. Hickey, could you imagine if that were the case? Now, that would have been fun. Like, oh, my.

Very cool. Like here's LeBron James and Michael Jordan washed up with the Wizards. And then here he is. Here's LeBron James in 2024 and 2025 and playing against Tim Duncan and Kobe and Michael Jordan and Shaq. I mean, Vince Carter go on in a Dirk Nowitzki. Like that is what I think there's a stat. LeBron James has played against what percentage of the NBA? Is it like, I don't know, was it like 40 years in the 40s?

It was some ridiculous number. The NBA has been around almost 80 years. The NBA.
