Sport Brief Show here with you coast to coast. On the Infinity Sports Network. Hey, we got the conclusion of week 12 of the NFL season, it's now underway. Got the Carolina Panthers down in Santa Clara getting, well, not getting ready. They are taking on the San Francisco 49ers.
We'll keep you up to date on that game as it continues on. We had a lot of great games yesterday, many of them coming down to the wire. And then we had a damn good game between the Dallas Cowboys, of course, and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys coming back from a 21 to nothing deficit to beat the Eagles 24 to 21. The Cowboys, who likes to tie nobody?
They got five wins, five losses, and that. Tie. Offense is still lighting things up. Quinnen Williams helping on the interior of that defense. What's next?
For the Dallas Cowboys as they get ready to take on the Chiefs Thursday, of course, on that Thanksgiving game. And more importantly, can these Dallas Cowboys still kind of squeak their way into the postseason? Joining us right now to talk about all things Cowboys is someone who covers them for the Dallas Morning News. And let's welcome back Joe Hoyt. Joy, how are you, man?
Yeah, it's good to talk to you, JR. All the time.
Well, we we saw what took place. We know this Cowboys offense can go ahead and put up the points with Pickens and then also Lamb. But now they they got this this defense.
So what impact has Quentin Williams already had in just two games? Yeah, I think his impact can't be understated, frankly. And let's start on the field. I mean, you know, that it's allowed them to do more five-down fronts, which kind of shocked the Eagles a little bit, but that's something they've been kind of doing for a little while. And what he's kind of doing right now is allowing guys that they've already paid to kind of accelerate and be in their best positions.
Like, look at Osa Digizua, for example, a guy they extended this offseason. With Quinnen Williams there, he doesn't get double teamed as much, which allows more one-on-one matchups.
So far in two games, he and Quinn Williams have combined 28 pressures together from the interior. And because they're getting that interior pressure, it's allowing guys like Deron Bland, who made his money On kind of predicting pressure against the quarterback and making jumps, it's allowed him to play a lot better too. And the other thing about Quinn Williams is he's added such a veteran leadership element to this group. You know, you they had a behind the scenes kind of Mic'd up situations with the Las Vegas Raiders. And you could hear Quentin Williams teaching the rest of the guys on the fly how to attach certain guys based on the previous play.
And you talked to a lot of guys in that locker room. Quinn Williams has not only been a difference maker on the field, but in the locker room in terms of how he's helping others as well. Joe Hoyt is here with us, covers the Dallas Cowboys for the Dallas Morning News. We know it's been an interesting season defensively for the Dallas Cowboys. Of course, they trade away Micah Parsons.
They get Kenny Clark in return to put him on a defensive line. And Jerry Jones made and has made it a point over months to just say, hey, but we're going to get better. And they made the trades to get better.
Now that Micah is gone, and yes, it's only been a few months, do you think the move makes sense or is it still too soon? You know, I think the move makes sense when you consider that that's what they wanted to do. I think. You know, I think if you look at kind of the Dallas Cowboys for a while. They've been trying to find run defenders on the interior for a long time.
It's why they used the first-round pick on Monzi Smith. They've swung and missed a lot. You know, they haven't had an interior defensive lineman this talented probably since Leroy Glover, and you go back two decades, right?
So, with this Cowboys defensive line, I think that was something they wanted to do. And they looked at Micah Parsons as yes. He is fantastic when we have leads. But we can't rush the passer if we're in games or we're behind and players or teams are trying to run the ball and beat us that way. They believe that, that was kind of the root cause of a lot of their playoffs' lack of success You know, in recent memory, is just their ability not to stop the run.
So when they make the Micah Parsons trade, you know, obviously that's something. That's That's a pretty significant move that we all judge very you know, with a lot of scrutiny and very cynically. But I will say, you know, when you then turn some of those picks into getting a guy like Gwen Williams, who they wanted. When they were shopping Micah Parsons. That was a guy that they would have traded Micah Parsons to the Jets if they had Quentin Williams and some other things in return.
They not only get Quentin Williams, but they get Kenny Clark. And now they have a defensive front that it's still weird for me to say JR is playing really, really well. I mean, the fact that they've allowed 90 rushing yards and 30 carries over the last two games. That feels like an anomaly that they haven't seen here in a long, long time. But now it's starting to feel like a resurgence.
Well, we know that this defense is trying to catch up with the offense. The line is certainly doing well. You mentioned Bland. What's the deal with Diggs? Are we going to see him back on the field at any point?
You know, there's kind of that air of uncertainty about Vitra Vante's future here, to be honest with you. I mean, Jerry Jones has been pretty frank about. you know, what he thinks in terms of Trayvon Diggs coming back. You know, he was asked last week on the radio, you know, about that, and he says, I don't think any of us really know. We'll kind of see.
And so they have an out in his contract after this year. That is possible. In terms of this year, you know, Thursday of the game is a short week. He's not going to be activated, even though he's eligible this week. Brian Scheinheimer, though, said he's doing everything right.
He's got a lot of positivity. Things are good. Um but it's tur kind of turning into one of those things where you know until it actually happens uh it's you know, it's hard to actually put a finger on when he's going to be back. I'll say this too. I mean, they they like what they've got with the corners right now and Caitlin Carson, who's taken on a starting role, and they like Sivone Rebel, the rookie third round pick, who they believe was a first round talent.
So I think that they feel a little bit confident about their corner room moving forward. Um with or without Trayvon Diggs, but it'll be interesting to see when or if he plays again for the Dallas Cowboys. Oh, wow.
Well, we know one issue, speaking of injuries, we saw what the Cowboys did yesterday coming back against the Eagles, and Pickens was a big part of that, setting himself up for a nice payday at the conclusion of the season. A touchdown, 146 yards receiving. I heard that Pickens is a little busted up. We want to see him play on Thanksgiving. What's his status?

You know, late confusion, doesn't seem to be a lot of cause for concern there. You know, something he kind of played with at the end a little bit there, too.
So I think they feel good about Pickens, but to your point, JR, he has been. A difference maker for this team. And, you know, I mean, outside of Jackson, Smith, and Jigba, you know, and even arguably compared with him, I mean, this is one of the best receivers in the NFL, the way he's played this season. You know, we looked at that trade as a gamble, you know, a huge gamble for them when they gave up third and a fifth.
Now it's looking like a steal. The question is, as you've kind of alluded to, what kind of money is he going to get now that he's an impending free agent? And I'll tell you what, yesterday's price for George Pickens is not today's price. And he continues to kind of raise that bar with how he plays.
Well, we know the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones, they like to take everything to the wire, to the minute, knowing that all things considered, George Pickens has been a quote-unquote good soldier this season. What is this negotiation going to look like? And is there a space where he just says, oh, yeah, I'm just going to up and leave the Dallas Cowboys for more money somewhere? Is somebody even going to pay him more? What do you expect?
Yeah, it's funny because I just expect there to be a holdout every single year at Dallas Cowboys training camp when we go to Oxford now. And I'm kind of circling George Fickens as that name already, even though he's an impending free agent. I think he's been too valuable and too good for them to let him walk easily. I fully anticipate You know, a franchise tag type situation, if they can't come to an agreement with him before in terms of an extension, and then we'll see if a potential holdout arises from that. And the vibe I get from Pickens and from Jared Jones is that they're okay writing this out until the offseason.
Things are good right now. They don't feel any urgency to. to get that extension done before the end of this season. And once that happens, we'll kind of see there's still a lot of games left, pickings value could keep going up. And it's very important to note that George Pickens is also represented by athletes first.
Um you know he has direct A representation that's not David Mulligetta, but David Mulligetta is also involved with George Sickens, and obviously, we now have David Mulligetta and Jerry Jones. kind of sparred a little bit this offseason. One thing I we've been told is that Uh, that they don't harbor ill will against each other, it was just business in terms of Micah Parsons. Um, you know, as time goes on, it almost feels like the Cowboys were. Kind of interested in moving on from him before all the contract negotiations reached a standstill.
I don't think that that will entirely affect it, but it is worth noting as George Pickens is going to put himself in an interesting contract situation after this season. Joe Hoyd is here with us, covers all things Dallas Cowboys. The next time we'll see them on the field is that classic Thanksgiving game, this time hosting the Kansas City Chiefs. What do you expect from this game given what we've seen from the Cowboys over the past couple of weeks? Yeah, you know, I think one thing that I really wanted to see this past week was: were the defensive additions and changes were they real?
Were they legitimate? Is this a resurgence or was that a flash in the pan against a pretty bad Las Vegas Raiders team? And I'll be honest with you, JR, I'm pretty confident. after two games that this is a team that has the potential to be a solid defense, which is All they need to be when the offense is playing as well as it is when Jack Prescott and Javante Williams. and George Pickens are doing what they're doing.
And CeeDee Lamb as well, you know, when he kind of is firing on all cylinders.
So I think that they have the ability to be that on defense. I think with the Kansas City Chiefs kind of struggling to run the ball, This might come down to Ken Patrick Mahomes, make some Superhuman plays, which you know, as we all know, he's he's that's something he can do against the Cowboys defense that's playing pretty well.
So I expect it to be a fun one. I'm kind of riding with momentum. You know, they won back to back games for the first time all season, almost for the first time in an entire year. Um I kind of think that they they hold on at home and and beat the Kansas City Chiefs. Oh, wow.
Well, I mean, well, Joe, let's hit the fast forward button. If they're able to do that, they're now six, five, and one. They're five, five, and one as it stands today. That record is going to change in a few days on Thanksgiving. Do you think these Dallas Cowboys can go to the postseason and have any type of impact?
I still think probably not because I just think the odds are against them. They dug themselves into a big hole, JR. And I posted it today. I've been following ESVN's projections of percent chance as he makes the playoffs. And with that huge win over the Eagles yesterday, the Cowboys went from a 7% chance to make the playoffs to a 9% chance.
It's going to take a pretty near perfect ending to this season if they want a shot at the playoffs. I do think this though, JR, I think they're going to be a tough out for a lot of teams the rest of the way. And I do think with a first-year head coach in Brian Schoenheimer that drew a lot of scrutiny and a lot of questions when they made that hire. I think kind of having a positive end to the season. you know, with some of the pieces that are going to have coming back, that could have some momentum, I think, in the next year.
Okay. I mean, Dallas do Dallas Cowboy fans want to hear hear that? They got to wait another year? No. No, no, no.
They they're tired of this route, but I do think some of them will at least have a little bit more optimism heading into next season with a positive finish.
Well, let me ask you this, Joe, because we all know Dak Prescott nationally. He can go out there and get beat up. He's having another great season, if you ask me. Draymond Green just called him a bum a few weeks ago. Dak just shows up.
And he goes to work. I mean, what is the consensus and the feeling in the Metroplex with Dak? Are the fans just kind of used to him? Are they taking him for granted? Or are they what's the consensus?
Yeah, I think he's pretty polarizing here in Dallas, to be honest with you. And I think a lot of fans either love him or hate him. I think a lot of fans either say that he's an MVP type caliber guy, or they think, how could you pay this one guy 60 million when he has no playoffs? Success or very little at that. And I think that that's kind of just what comes with being the quarterback for the Dallas Cavaliers, especially amidst the drought they have.
I think there were some people that criticized Tony Romo. I don't know if it was to this level, though, to be honest with you, DR, but he is a polarizing guy, I think, even here in the Metroplex. Wow.
Well, we'll see what happens the rest of the season. But like you said, getting paid sixty mil, he is not going anywhere. Joe, we appreciate the time as always. Tell everybody where they can follow you and all of your work, keeping up with these Cowboys. Yeah, you can follow some stories I write on dallasnews.com and then follow me on social media at JoeJ Hoyk.
And JR, always a pleasure to talk to you, man. Always a pleasure, man. Enjoy the holiday, okay, Joe? Yeah, take care. Happy Thanksgiving.
