Happy National Radio Day. Thank you for being a part of the radio on the Infinity Sports Network. I'll be hanging out with you for one more hour. This show gets started every weekday, 6 p.m. Eastern.
Three Pacific. That's four hours every weekday, Monday through Friday. And we've discussed a lot, of course. We just talked about a top six list. We're still talking about the top six athletes who retired too soon.
We discussed some of the other things that took place today. How about this? Harrison Phillips Horrible Harry Phillips, being traded from the Minnesota Vikings, To the New York Jets. How about Demarcus Robinson from the San Francisco Forty Niners? He suspended the first three games for the season.
D-U-I. You don't drink and drive. Don't do anything under the influence. Don't drive under the influence. As a result, Sky Moore, no longer a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Skye Moore has been moved to the San Francisco Forty Niners. We got Brian Schottenheimer, he expects Michael Parsons to play, in week one. He doesn't have anything to do with anything. He can blame Jerry for that, but he thinks he'll be available out there. Cam Ward says Oh yeah, me scuffling with Jeff Simmons?
That's just business as usual. The Saints quarterback situation is still ugly. We found out today. If you like boxing, you like fighting, you like entertainment, well, you got six foot one Jake Paul. Taking on Gervante Tank Davis in an exhibition fight here in Atlanta, Georgia.
november fourteenth. Yeah, I'll be in a house. Likely. I'll go check it out. I like a good circus here and there.
And then, of course, every Wednesday I give you a new top six list. Today, Well, yesterday we found out John Wall called it quits and Andrew Luck had to retire. Years ago, he says, I regret how it happened. I gave you a top six list of athletes who retire too soon. Not necessarily due to injury.
For guys who decided to walk away, and I'm still taking your calls on that. If you want to be a part of the show, you can. 888-710-4ISN is the number. That's eight eight eight seven ten four. Four I S N.
Yeah, I gave you a top six list athlete to retire to soon, and number six, Rocky Marciano, only heavyweight to finish his career undefeated, forty nine and all. From 1947 to 55, this guy was whooping ass all year long. None of these once-a-year fights like we got now. And number five, I gave you Calvin Johnson of the Lions. And number four, I gave you Khabib, MMA fighter.
Finished his career at 29-0 after his dad passed away due to COVID. He said, I ain't fighting no more. And number three, I gave you Barry Sanders. Said the lines are sucking the life out of me, I'm done. And number two.
I gave you Jim Brown. He says, Man, I'm not just some gladiator out here to be gettin' my ass whapped. He went to Hollywood. worked in civil rights, and at number one You talk about an athlete who retired too soon? Michael Jordan saying in nineteen ninety three What else do you want from me?
His dad was murdered. He won his third championship. He kept winning scoring titles. He was the best guy in the league. He said, I'm done.
But then he left the door open and then he came back and then he did some more winning. Yeah, Michael Jordan, number one on the list. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4. four I S N What a day Athletes who retire too soon Hey, Botcher, here's a question for you.
Shout outs to our producer, Botcher. He's not in Atlanta with me. He doesn't like me too much, so he just stays in New York. Uh, botcher Is there an athlete that you look at that you just go, man? That guy's gone.
He quit when I loved him. Luke Keekly was very, very good. And I know he had the concussion problems, but he was cleared to play. And I understand why he retired.
So I don't know if that counts on your retiring due to injuries list. Come on. A brain? That's a part of your body, right? It can get injured.
I know. That's what a concussion is. When he stepped away, though, he was healthy. That's why I was. Bro, no.
You think so? You think after you've had a bunch of concussions and you're at risk for another concussion sending your brain to another place, that that's health. That's not healthy. No, his career was not healthy, but I think when he stepped away. He had just had a pretty solid year where he wasn't hurt that much, and he stepped away.
his brain was he was that man was smart.
Okay. If you accumulate, have you ever had a concussion? No, thank goodness. Good. Let's try to keep it that way.
Your bra, that doesn't, there's no reverse button for your brain getting rattled around. You know that, right? Yeah, it's permanent. Yeah, and God only knows how it gets worse and progresses.
So. Um look how It's a horror horror show. You start thinking about a guy like Junior Seyow. I mean, the blows between the running back or fullback, not that there are a lot of them anymore, to a linebacker is just. Catastrophic.
And if you do that, year after year after year, play after play after play, it's just collision after collision after collision. Whether you're a boxer, you're a fighter, you happen to be an NFL player. Like you can go out there and just be punch drunk. And so I I actually commend Luke Keekly. You can have an injury to your arm, your elbow, your shoulder.
I mean, damn it, we got Andrew Luck. He's like, man, I'm out here peeing blood. Like, I need to be peeing blood to play in the NFL. No, thank you. I'm over this.
Now, my shoulder hurts and my leg. No thanks. Andrew Luck was smart enough to go, man. At least, not my brain. I'm out of here.
Luke Keekly was getting his bell rung, and that's why even it's tough at times looking at Tua. Like, I don't. Itua is healthy enough to play. there wouldn't be a human being who faulted him if he said I'm done. And I wouldn't say that he walked away healthy.
I'd be like, man, you've had an accumulation of head injuries. It it only takes one more. And that's the freaky and scary part.
So, you know, Tua goes out there, he puts his body and his life on the line. Botch, I'll give you even better example. I I don't remember the Japanese gentleman's name. There was a boxer And I think there may have been two of them from Japan this year. He fought in a fight.
And he walked out of the ring. Botcha, he walked out on his own two feet. He was dead. Not too long after that. Because of breeding bleeding on his brain.
And yeah, he just walked out of a fight. But it it's a crazy thing. The brain is so complex. We as human beings are so complex, how we're put together and constructed. That's why they say we're here at the top of the food chain.
We might build a lot of great things, we might tear things down, but That the the brain is a is a is a crazy thing. I'll take it back to uh I guess dare. Your mind is a terrible thing to waste. Just take it easy. 888-710-4ISN.
That's 888-710-4ISN. We're talking about athletes who retired. too soon. And they could have kept going, they were healthy, but they just said. I'm done.
I'm finished. James He's calling from Hawaii. You're on the JR Sport Brief show. What's up, James? Hello, JR.
Thanks for taking my call. Sure, was that?
So well, you kind of you kind of took one. There's two athletes I got to see in the Bay Area in person. And when I got to meet them as well, they just made me a bigger fan. One was Andrew Luck. I got to see him play at Stanford.
He used to come watch his sister play volleyball games and I coached volleyball, so I met him there. But the biggest one for me is Patrick Willis. He was just an incredible stud, an incredible athlete, and off the field, he was so nice to everybody. And to me, I wish I could have seen him play a little bit more. No, absolutely.
And he's another guy. He had the He could have kept on playing, but his foot was busted up for quite some time. And I've never met Patrick Willis. Always hear amazing things about him and how good he is. Um Yeah.
Wow.
Well, thank you so much, James, for calling from Hawaii. Mahalo, take care.
Alright, peace out. Here we go Mahalo, yeah. Hawaii. Bacha, that was a missed opportunity. I could have asked him about the uh Aloha Stadium, right, Kuda?
I think he called. He called in right before we were about to take a guest when we asked about it. Oh, that was him the other day. No, no, no, he called in to me. When I was about to call up our guest, and he goes, Okay, call in 10, 15 minutes.
And he goes, Okay, I'll call in 10, 15 minutes. And he didn't call. Oh.
Well, it was your fault. You told him to kick rocks. No, I said he said he said, How long is it going to be? And I was like, I'm going to be honest with you. We have a guest coming up here, probably 10, 15 minutes when we come back from commercials and whatnot.
Yeah. And he was like, Oh, okay, I'll call back and didn't.
Well, he called back today.
Well, thank you so much. I appreciate that. Yeah, man. Yeah, I've I've heard amazing things about Patrick.
Well, I've never heard anybody say a bad word. About the dude. He probably had more left in the tank, but man, you're a linebacker, you got to push off that foot. They're pushing back against you. It can be tough out there.
And then he played along with my main man, Takio Spikes. And I know Takio hangs out with him.
So maybe one day I run into Patrick Willis. I don't know. Shout outs to Takio. Shout out to my main man, Champ Bailey, too. 888-710-4ISN.
888-710-4ISN. Hey, let's go to Knoxville. Knoxville, Tennessee. Let's talk to Sal. Sal, you're on the J.
R. Sport Re show. What's up? What's up, JR? Loving the show, loving the topic.
I appreciate you. Sure.
Well, I got a couple. I don't know how much time we have, but I got a couple. Oh, well, we got a lot of people. We don't got a couple. Give me your main name.
I was going to say Andrew Luck, but y'all took it.
So I'm going to say this was kind of a forced retirement. The great Mahmoud Abdul Rauf. I feel like he was in his prime and he got knocked out. Uh Okay. What what, standing up for well, not standing up for the national anthem?
Yeah, so that kinda they kinda got pushed out. But the other one I'll give you is Tiki Barber. Oh, well, Tiki, yeah, Tiki good. And then Tiki tried to come back, and it didn't work out for him, you know?
So that's a good one. Yeah, you should have brought up Tiki. Raouf. Yeah, forced retirement. A little sketchy there when.
heading into uh pre-Colin Kaepernick territory on that one. Yes, a little bit, but great conversation. I appreciate you. Well, thank you. I appreciate you.
Shoutouts to Sal. for calling from Knoxville. eight eight eight seven ten four I S N. I I love the creativity. I'm thinking about guys who just walked away and they could have kept playing.
We had somebody bring up Len Bias. Died due to an overdose before he even got to the NBA. We got guys sitting down for the national anthem forced retirement.
Somebody brought up Sandy Colfax. Sandy Kolfax's arm was wrecked. He could have kept on pitching, but he's like, hey, they're telling me if I keep on pitching, can I pitch? Yes, if I keep on, I may not have use of my arm here. Come on now.
888-710-4ISN Alan is here from Toronto. Shoutouts to Canada. You on the JR Sport Re show, Alan. What's up? Yeah, somebody said Sandy Kofax They stole my thunder, but I have another one.
Yao Ming, he was only thirty. He was selected to play eight-foot-handed. Yep. That man's feet were cooked. He didn't retire because he wanted to go back to China.
He didn't retire because he was homesick. You know, he didn't retire because he hated America. Yao Ming Quit. because he was too big. Hi Yao Ming was seven foot six.
I think Yao Ming, and I don't want to be a jerk here, I think he had like a size 13-foot. Yeah, and he uh He only played five games in his final year, uh two thousand ten, two thousand. No, sorry. He wore impossible. Could you imagine somebody that big, 7'6, with a size 13 foot?
His foot was only a size 18. Only. only. He could have played more if he wanted to. His number 11 is retired by the Houston Rockets.
Allie. And he went into the Hall of Fame with pretty good company, Shaq O'Neill and Alan Iverson back in 2008. Do you think? You think Yao Ming could have played more? You think?
It wasn't for the pain.
Well, that's my point. That C got hurt. It's not like he could have played more. He was 7'6. God only knows how much he weighed.
That dude was solid. There was nothing skinny, small, thin, slight about Yao Ming. Yeah, I don't know about he could have played more. I think if he could have, he would. But when you are that, there's nothing else, no other way to explain it.
And shout outs to Alan. Thank you for calling from Toronto, my man. It's just When you are you seven foot six Runnin' up and down on a wood basketball court, runnin' an' jumpin'? You don't think the stress on that man's feet got him out the NBA? Could have played more?
I don't think so. You might as well tell me that today, Shaq. could play some more NBA basketball. I think the hell not. That man could probably well, I've been around Shaq.
That man He ain't running any anywhere. Let's just go ahead and put it that way. You don't put that much pounding on your body and just go, Oh, yeah, I feel fine. It it's it's real bad, especially for the big guys. It's rare.
that you see a real huge dude who played in the NBA. who can reach the age of, I don't know, sixty. and move around okay. Certainly Bill Russell played in a different era. I passed by Bill Russell one time.
at the All Star game in New Orleans. I don't know what year this was. Maybe it was twenty fifteen, sixteen, something like that, seventeen. Bill Russell walked by me. And I'm like, Well, damn, Bill Russell Like I get it Ev this man's taking a beatin'.
He could he didn't have the best gait and then eventually he was in a wheelchair. Not not a surprise. I mean, we talked about Jim Brown. I had Jim Brown number two on my list. Top six athletes who retired too soon.
It must have been, I think, twenty eleven, twenty twelve. I was at a golf tournament. and Jim Brown was right next to me. I looked to my right and I'm like, Oh, crap That's Jim Brown. I could reach out and touch the guy.
He was in a golf cart right next to me. Jim Brown could barely get up and move. And he played football, took a whoopin'. Man, saying that any of these dudes, oh, well, you know, it was only the pain and the injury. Yeah.
That's a lot of guys. It bodies are not built to do this. Which is why you look at a Tom Brady, and yeah, he's the quarterback, he's protected. Amazing. He played as long as he did at the level that he did.
You can look at a LeBron James, regardless of whether you love him or hate him. The fact that he's still competing at a high level throughout his entire career, 20 plus years without a major injury, is a testament to him and his body. LeBron is 6'9. He's flyin' all over the court. God bless him.
He didn't have to go through a physical beating. He wasn't a power forward. He's playing more of a guard position. It's. Kudos to dudes who can play forever.
A lot of guys who don't even get the chance look at her. Oh, Greg Oden. Forget Yao Ming. Look at Greg Oden. Knees couldn't work from the get go.
eight eight eight seven ten four I S N eight eight eight seven ten four ISN. We're looking at players. who had to just call it quits too soon. I'm thinking about guys, no injuries. They just walked away because they were sick of it.
Joe is calling from Buffalo. You're on the JR Sport Brief Shop.
Well, thank you, JR, and great topic. And I have to say, the guy I'm going to talk about really did have an injury, but Talk about greatest athletes and an all-star in two different leagues if we're talking about Bo Jackson. Um I I he was just an incredible athlete. Yeah. Yeah, that hip did him in, and there was it was curtains for him all over the place.
Hey, Joe, thank you for calling from Buffalo. I appreciate you. No problem. Thank you. No doubt.
Yeah, see, it's easier to think about all of we can think about a lot of guys who had to walk away due to injury. It's difficult little little tougher to think about guys who just walked away because they didn't want to do it any more. They were done. Rocky Marciano said I want to be with my family. Calvin Johnson said the lions suck.
Khabib said My dad isn't here. I'm not fightin'. Barry Sanders also said the lions suck.
Well, he said the lions suck before Calvin did. Jim Brown said, Man, y'all ain't taking my life away from me. I'm out of here. And then Michael Jordan, they took his dad's life and he won everything. He said I'm gone.
and then he came back. eight eight eight seven ten four I S N That's 888-710-4ISN. I'll take more of your calls. I think Bacha might have another name that we can think about. Of course, at the end of the show, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history.

Yeah. I hear that every now and then. It's kinda it's still kinda crazy to hear that. Damn it, I've been on the internet. Before I even got the radio, I was on the internet for like Woof.
Yeah, about ten years. I just people knew me from the internet before I even touched radio.
So it's just kinda odd. People know my vape, my voice. They don't necessarily know my face. That's fine. You know, you can find me on the internet.
People are like, oh, okay, a black guy. Oh, somebody said, oh, pretty good-looking black guy. Yeah, I got twisted up afro and all of that stuff. I love it. Thank you.
At JR Sport Brief. You can go ahead and peruse whatever the hell you want to see. 888-710-4ISN. I need you to think O'Reilly Auto Parts for all of your car care needs. Get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at or Riley parts.
Okay. O'Reilly, but Bacha, go ahead, sing the song. Oh, oh, oh, O'Reilly. Auto parts out! Oh, I didn't expect the hour at is there really an hour at the end of the journey?
Okay. Yeah. What, huh? What? It's either a horn or an owl, or someone gets hit by a car.
One of the one of the three. Bruh, if you don't want anybody getting hit by a car at the end of a car commercial, right? That's why you need the auto parts. Because you hit somebody? Yeah, or an accident, yeah.
You you drive cars, you be driving? Yeah, drive. I don't know, you live in New York City. I don't know where you drive. I I have not hit anyone or anything.
Yet. Why'd you say yet? That's bad Juju.
Well if Am I? I don't know if the statute of limitations is passed on this. I don't know how this works. I kind of nudged somebody on purpose one time in New York City. What?
Did you mean what? I said what I said. I nudged somebody in New York City. How fast are we talking about? I was turning a corner on the West Side Highway.
I was in the village, I forgot the name of that hotel, but there's a hotel on the West Side Highway. And I was turning a corner to get on the West Side Highway. And it was raining that day. And this individual saw me making a turn and walking. And still wanted to get in front of me.
And they had an umbrella. And I get it, it's raining outside, you yield to pedestrians and all of that good stuff. But this person was just being a jerk. And so I did not stop my car. I kept on going because they were being a complete jerk.
And I happened to nudge the back of their legs or their ass as I made my turn. And I continued driving. I wasn't speeding. I just continued driving. And they continued walking perfectly fine.
So they knew that they were being a jerk. It was nothing ridiculously malicious. I know it sounds crazy. JR hit a person. I did, and I did not care.
And neither did they, because they knew they were being a jerk.
So you ate that?
Okay, that's not that bad then. As long as they weren't. collapsed on the floor. With major injury? Oh.
Oh, no harm. Oh, no, no, no. This was no hit and run type situation. I just. I nudged and drove.
and they deserved it.
Okay, there you go. Ah, no lawsuit's coming my way. It's too lazy like I don't even. This is more. This is like 15, 16, 17 years ago.
So no problem there. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. Man, we got a lot of callers here.
Okay? Listen, what I need every human being listening to me to do right now You got to tell me this person's name because we've been discussing the top athlete who retired too soon. And we've gotten a variety of listeners.
Okay, people are naming guys, unfortunately, like Len Bias, who passed away before he even got to the league. People are naming guys who had to retire due to injury. And I'm trying to think about guys who weren't, but I'm going to just take your calls. Give me your name.
Well, let's keep it moving. Give me your name, give me a quick thought, and let's get on to the next caller because the lines are a jumping. eight eight eight seven ten four I S. And let's go ahead and talk to Eric from Saint Petersburg. Eric from St.
Pete you're on the JR Sportry Show. What's up? Hey JR, thanks for taking my call. How about us? Yeah.
Oh, that's an excellent one. Excellent, excellent, excellent. This guy was winning World Series and he said, I'm done, and he left. Quit. Wait.
three times three rings, five times Silver Slugger, seven time All-Star. Uh an MVP, a rookie of the year, a batting title. Yeah. And he was thirty two years old, but of those twelve seasons he technically was a player. He only did about nine full seasons.
And remember, he came back not even playing in twenty twenty one and then was I mean, and not even playing in the twenty twenty. And it was terrific in twenty twenty one, and that's when he hung it up. And wow, you know, he could have done maybe. four or five more years sort of phased into being a Of course, he's the general manager now, and that's what he wanted to do. I think it probably had occurred to him in twenty twenty.
I gotta phase out of this and get into management. Yeah, well, I think for a lot of people, he went into COVID. He came out of COVID, and he's just like, you know what? I enjoy spending more time with my family instead of getting ran over as a catcher.
So I don't blame them. Hey, Eric, great call, man. That's an excellent name. Thank you so much. Thank you.
Thanks so much. Thank you, Eric, for calling from St. Petersburg. Yeah, Buster Posey, excellent, excellent name. I mean, he played catcher.
It was a demanding position, but there wasn't like one singular i injury or issue. that forced him out. eight eight eight seven ten four I S N 888-710-4ISN. Sean is here from Silver Creek, New York. You're on the JR Sport Reef Show.
What's up, Sean? Hey, what's up, JR? I love the show. First time caller. Just gotta say, I can't believe a little bit disappointed you left this guy off the list.
What about Pat Pillman? Oh, yeah. I mean, this guy, yeah, he retired at the NFL, decided to go into the military, paid the the ultimate price. That's an excellent call, Pat. Excellent.
Or Sean, you're not Pat. Thank you, Sh. Yeah, have a go one, sir. You as well. Shout out to everybody who served as well.
That's a good call. This man, Pat Tillman, saw everything that happened in nine eleven and He went into the service and he didn't he didn't come out. He didn't come out. It's crazy you see that from. An athlete, you you really don't.
You rarely see that from an athlete. It's like I had no choice. He said, I'm going to hang him up. And he found a higher calling. He believed in his country and protecting it.
And he gave his life to it. Shout outs to everybody who served. 888-710-4ISN. 888-710-4ISN. Hey, let's go to Ryan, calling from Sacramento.
You want to chair our sport brief show? Go ahead, Ryan. Hey, JR, thanks for taking my call, man. Appreciate your show. First time calling.
Thanks. I wanted to get your thoughts on Some of these golfers, dude, like I think of like David Duvall where they just They go on these winning streaks and then they show up to the next tournament. It's like they can't even play and they just drop off the face of the earth. Most recently, Max Homa. You know, I'm not sure any other sport you can be so good and then be so bad.
Seemingly overnight. Yeah, I mean I don't I didn't I didn't even think about a golfer. Because I don't know. When you think about a golfer, or I think about a golfer who's reaching his peak. It's not just some some shot some guy who just got shot out of a cannon.
I would think about a guy like if Scotty Schuffler today said, I'm done. I have to think that you'd have to go on a streak. Of picking up major victories. You gotta be out here winning British Opens and going out here and winning the Masters. You gotta, and it's tough.
It's tough. I I I don't know if I'd consider anybody who just kind of popped up, won a tournament and just said, Oh, I'm here at the top for, you know, a couple of months and then he falls off. I I would think about the shufflers of the world, man. Yeah, but think about Scheffler. I mean, what other sport, unless he gets injured.
I mean, golf seems so technical. I know this is off the grid a little bit, but it seems so technical where If you're not I don't know. Seems like Scotty Scheffler could just get the yips or something, lose it mentally and be so bad, go from so good to so bad mo seemingly momentarily.
So It happens. I got you, Ryan. Thank you for calling. I'm from Sacramento. I appreciate you.
I didn't think about a golfer because I think golfers, they go through stretches. They may go through years. where it's just in between your head. and between your ears. And y you just don't win anything.
It's tough. I mean, you rarely find guys who are just at their peak, at the top, at the top, at the top, at the top. and typically golfers who are at the top they just stick around forever. And then they move on to the senior tour.
So I haven't thought about golfers in regards to that. That's a good call. 888-710-4ISN. eight eight eight seven ten. 4-I-S-N.
We got Kurt from Boise. You're on the Chair Sport Re Show. Hey, AZR, thanks for taking my call. Hope you and your team are having a blessed day. When I heard the question, the very first one I thought of is Barry Sanders.
And if you need a bonus, Calvin Johnson. Yeah, well I had Calvin Johnson number five on my list. I had Barry Sanders at number three. and we know why they quit. because the Lions were a bunch of losers.
Thank you, Kurt. You're not a Lions fan, are you? No, Broncos. Yeah, Boise. Yeah, makes sense.
Makes sense. Hey, good luck this season with the Knicks, okay? You got? All right, thank you, Kirk, for calling from Boise. Between that defense and Bo Nicks, things should be pretty good.
888-710-4ISN. Botcher, you had another name that came to your mind? Yeah, I thought about Antonio Brown in a weird way. Oh my god. The alleged criminal?
Yeah, the alleged criminal. If you technically look at his career, He retired Wait, wait, wait, wait. Did he retire? It's not official, but I think walking off the field. Taking your jersey off and going bye-bye.
I think that's close to a retirement as you can get, huh? It's close.
Well, he's more than retired. He's on the lamb, okay? Where is he? The Middle East hiding from the the Miami Police Department? He's living in the underground.
I don't know. back roads of the Middle East. What a life. I hope he makes it out in a. In a different way.
I'm talking about life. I hope he, whenever his time is up, I hope it's in a positive space and not in a. A disastrous one because that's the line that Antonio Brown is living right now. You just uh. You can't make his life and his career out.
It's Quite unique, to say the least. Let's put it that way. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you, Coast to Coast, or the Infinity Sports Network. When we come back, I'll get some more of your calls. And then, of course, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history.

Yeah, isn't that what makes us all beautiful? We can all disagree and agree, and everybody has an opinion. It's a beautiful thing, right? INFORMED OPINIONS It is the JR Sport Reshow here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Hey, we've had one heck of a show.
Wild stuff Talked about Cam Ward getting into that fight, with Jeff Simmons. Not too much of a fight, but in typical pushing and shoving uh in a football game or practice. You don't want your quarterback getting into no scuffle, but that's what happened. Cam Ward said, Yeah, I'm good for it. Got the Minnesota Vikings trading Harrison Phillips.
Harry Phillips is now a member of the New York Jets. You got Sky Moore going from the Chiefs to the Niners. Demarcus Robinson suspended. Hey, thank you so much to our guest, Luke Braun, for joining us. Covers all things Minnesota Vikings to talk about their issues.
They may be trying to bring in a new wide receiver with all the injuries and suspensions. Guys like Rondale Moore, and you got Addison suspended, you got Jefferson coming off of a Hammy. There's a lot going on. We've discussed a lot. Speaking of wide receivers, we got it to Jeremiah Smith.
We're going to have a busy day tomorrow as well. I know it. And then the Saints. They might as well not even select a starting quarterback. I mean, if you're Kellen Moore, just flip a coin and figure out who you want to throw out there because between Tyler Shuck, Spencer Rattler.
Both of these guys are going to be bad.
Okay? And that's me. Looking ahead. I don't need a crystal ball. I'm going to get to more of your calls.
Of course, we gave you a top six list. We talked about the top six athletes who retired too soon. Guys who decided to just hang them up. And not due to injury, not because they were hurt or needed to leave, because they wanted to.
Okay, I'm going to get to more of your calls in a second. 888-710-4ISN. If you listen to the show, you know, every night the top six is only on Wednesday, but every night. We talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history. and we're about to do that right now.
Fat, fat, fat, fat. Back in the days when I wish I'm not a kid anymore, but some days I sit and wish I was a kid again. It's time for this day in sports history. See, back in those days, we had radio and you couldn't see anything and it was primitive and lousy and we liked it. On the JR Sport Brief Show.
I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass. It is the JR Sport Re Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Today is August 20th, 2025. But if we go back to August 20th, 1964, Yogi Berra was the manager of the Yankees. He had a player on the team called Phil Linz.
Well, apparently Phil Linz, after a loss, was irritating Yogi Berra. He was playing a harmonica. Yogi Berra said, stop playing that harmonica. He kept playing a harmonica. Yogi Berra smacked the harmonica out of his hand.
This became such a national story. That Phil Lentz, the harmonica player on the New York Yankees, this guy ended up on Johnny Carson's show. he ended up with a harmonica deal. Oh yeah, quite convenient, even in the 60s. Listen to this.
I don't, I'm gonna take Phil Lins aside. After all, since CBS bought him, he's trying to get on the original amateur hour. You see what happened, and well, the way they're playing, the whole team might get on. The original amateur foreigner up. But.
Uh Lins was playing, Yogi wanted him to stop. And so Yogi made a rather novel suggestion. Yeah. As to the disposal of Linz's harmonic. Mr.
Lin's not being an acrobat declined.
So uh He tossed it up in the air. Lins tossed the harmonic in the air. Yogi swanted it, and it hit Joe Pepatone on the knee, and Pepetone is charged with the error. That is the way that it's all peaceful, I understand. It's all peaceful over there again.
And they were very busy today, the Yankees, studying the Mets' training films. Can you imagine the Mets four in a row and the Yankees drop three in a row? Four in a row? Four in a row see what happens when they as soon as they went with that network Yeah, well, damn it, the Yankees went to the World Series that year, and then Yogi Berra got fired after they lost to the Cardinals.
So there you have it. Yogi Berra fired after that one. And God rest his soul, along with Phil Lenz. August 20th, 1985. Speaking of the New York Mets, Dr.
K.
Okay, Dwight Gooden, he became the first National League pitcher to strike out more than 200 plus people. In his first two seasons. Let's listen to Dr. K.
0-2 in the crowd. comes to its feet. In total. Dwight Gooden has struck out 16 to tie his career high. He has won his 13th game in a row.
It is his 13th complete game and sixth shutout of the year. His record is now 19 and 3. He has an opportunity. to become the youngest player. To win.
20 games in one season. Man, you want to talk about what could have been. I mean, if if Doc Gooden wasn't You know, unfortunately, on drugs, that things would have been quite different in his career. The drugs, the injuries, and I'm glad Doc is doing good now. I talk to Doc every now and then.
He's doing cool. August 20th, 1989. Hojo, another New York met. He joined Barry Bonds and Willie Mays. 30 home runs, 30 stolen bases in the season.
30-30. Hey, I played in a celebrity game with Hojo. He still got it. Listen to this, courtesy of court side tweets. Listen to the recap.
His arm problems ended and Hojo was off and running to the kind of season that every player dreams about. Johnson did it all in the field. At the plate and on the bases, as he ran those trade rumors into the ground. Then made the All-Star team for the first time. During the wild.
Of 89, Ojo hit in seven different spots and slammed a home run in each one. Oh.
Along the way, he set four new Mets records, had six personal bests for a season, and tied another with 36 home runs. Yeah, and Hojo's a great human being as well. I like Hojo. Very nice guy. August 20th.
1990 George Steinbrenner He had to step down as owner. Of the New York Yankees.
Okay, he was suspended because he was trying to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. Imagine paying a player. That player doesn't perform the way you want. And so you try to get out of his contract and get him out of town by trying to rip him to shreds. Horrific.
Despite that, You know George Steinbranded rather successful as owner of the New York Yankees. One of his former players, Tino Martinez, first baseman, says, Yeah, he did some bad things. He was a great owner. He always wanted to win. He should be in the Hall of Fame.
Listen to this. You know, I'm not saying who shouldn't be in, but I'm saying George Tyberta should be in. I mean, it's a no-brainer all across baseball. I think every other owner knows it. But again, the writers that write and that have the votes right now, they're the ones that are keeping them out of it for whatever reason.
And it's a total shame. Like everything else these days, everything is so political and it's who likes who. If they like you, you're in. If they don't like you, you're out. And you get penalized for stuff like that, which is a horrible thing, I think, these days.
But he's gotten caught up in that. I mean, he has done. Not just so much for the New York Yankees, but he's done so much for every other organization in baseball to make them all better. Man, imagine if the Dallas Mavericks said, we hate Luca. Let's find some more dirt.
Imagine if that's almost what happened. I mean, they said he was fat, he didn't work out. Could you imagine if they really were like, hey, Luca's out here getting hookers, we gotta get him out of here? Thieves trying to find dirt on a guy from a a gambling dude. They're bad.
Hey, August 20th. Tiger Woods in 2000. He won the PGA championship in a playoff over Bob May. He became the first player since Ben Hogan to win three majors in one. Year.
He was the first player to repeat as PGA champion.
Something we haven't seen at that point since 1937. This is what Tiger Woods had to say at the time about facing the best of the best. Anytime you get to play against the best and be able to come out on top against the best, it's always going to be more satisfying. And the last two years, the PGA Championships have drawn the best field and I've been very fortunate to be able to win. But to be able to tee it up and go toe-to-toe against the best players in the world, that's what you dream about.
That's what you work so hard to get yourself in a position so that you are able to do that. And then to come out on top is just a bonus. Yeah, look I know we talked about a lot of athletes who retire too soon And Tiger Woods, that guy's body just betrayed him. Guy was playing since he was a kid. There you have it.
Yeah, a few things that took place this day. Sports history. Hey, listen, folks, I'm getting a hook. They're telling me I got to shut the hell up. Or Botcha's not telling me.
Nobody's telling me. I know I got to shut the hell up. And so if you called, if you want to call back tomorrow, I will definitely, absolutely get you on the air. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN.
We got a lot of people who've been waiting patiently, but we got to go.
Okay, I apologize for that. You can hit me up at JR Sport Brief. We'll be back tomorrow at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. Thank you so much to Luke Braun for joining us from the Vikings.
