the Infinity Sports Network. We've had a busy show. We talked about Michigan and its punishment. twenty to thirty million dollars in fines. Show cost penalties, barring guys like Jim Harbar from going back to college.
Sharon Moore fined an additional game. He will be suspended three games this upcoming season. Hey, they didn't have to Forfeit any of their victories. They didn't have to forfeit their title. People think they got off easy.
Now I think the the crime I think the punishment fits.
Okay. Hey, thanks so much to Bill Bender for joining us from the Sporting News to talk about that all things college football. We talked about John Gruden. John Gruden, he's like, man, I'm Swin E NFL. I want to coach.
I'd love to coach in college. Hey, we talked about Jacob Mazarowski making his return. Tonight. For the Milwaukee Brewers as they try to go for victory number thirteen in a row. They might get it.
They were down eight to one. They currently lead Cincinnati nine to eight. Mazarowski came back. He pitched one and a third innings. And he got smacked up for five runs.
And somehow, someway, the Brewers Bats are still hot. They're trying to win their 13th straight game in a row. We talked about some of the NFL action going on tonight, tomorrow. Falcons are in action a couple blocks from me here in Atlanta, taking on the Titans. We got Justin Herbert.
He'll be playing in his first ever preseason game. You heard that correctly. He's either been hurt or held out. And so we got more to do. Travis Hunter is hurt with an upper body injury.
Just the NFL, the world goes on and on and on and on and on. And shout outs to Slick Rick. Anyway, 888-710-4ISN is the number. That's eight at eight seven ten. For I S N.
You can find me online everywhere at JR Sport Brief. If you've missed a minute or a second of the show, hit Rewind on the Free Odyssey app. Thank you for listening on your local affiliate, SiriusXM Channel three hundred seventy five, and a smart speaker if you have one. Of course, at the end of the show, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history. We got a lot to get into.
We got a lot of people who want to talk. We got callers right now on the line. from New York City, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Yeah, we we we got people east coast, down south. The West Coast Yeah, you love it.
Hey, let's go to New York City. Let's talk to Elijah. Elijah, you're on the Gerald Sportb show. What's up, man?
Okay. What's our what's our jail? I'm pretty good. I wanted to talk about Cam Ward. The number one overall pick Yeah.
He bowed out in Miami when he went to when he went to University of Miami. Do you think after the way Shadora Sanders played, Do you think people are kind of sleeping on him? No, I don't think so. I you know I this is what I appreciate. We know Shador Sanders has the attention because of his last name.
His dad has been in the public eye for the past 40 years. And so Shador is a Sanders. I don't want to say the apple falls far from the tree, but there's a reason that he garners attention. And it's because of 40 years of his dad. And it's also because of his performance.
And it's because of his fall in the draft. When it comes to Cam Ward, Cam Ward just goes out and plays and plays and plays. And I think this might actually be to his benefit. He doesn't have to answer to a lot of crap. He doesn't have to answer to a lot of you-know-what.
He can just focus in on ball. And based on everything that we've ever heard from him, That's where the focus is and that's where it should be. Just on ball.
So I don't think people are sleeping on him. I mean, what's a more interesting story? Cam Ward or Shador Sanders?
Well, it would be Shador, honestly. Yeah, yeah. Second question, how do you do you think the Titans can make some noise in the AFC South? I know the Texans got the division on lock and then Jacksonville has Trevor Lawrence who's healthy and They got that two-way monster in, um What's the kid? I'm blanking on his name, the the why was he recorded back?
Oh, oh, uh, Travis Hunter, who's now broken, yes. Yeah. Yeah, um You think the Titans could do something? Or is another down year? I'm not expecting that.
Let me tell you, I'd be more surprised if the Tennessee Titans. Deh. I c I can't even see them. I was shocked with what Washington did last year.
Okay, they did that with a rookie quarterback who went out there and Jaden Daniels. I'd be even more surprised if we saw. Cam Ward kind of leads the Titans to anything in the postseason. If he does it, God bless him. You know, I take a look at the AFC South.
I expect the Texans to come out on top. We know that the Indianapolis Colts are a complete crap show with both of their quarterbacks. Jacksonville is hoping to turn things around. And so it's not like they got to go up against world beaters. And so I would expect them to improve based on what we saw last year.
I wouldn't be surprised if they got to, I don't know, seven or eight wins, given the division that they play in. A shock like that, a big time? No, I wouldn't expect to see them in the playoffs. If they do that, God bless Cam Ward, okay? Thank you, JR.
I really appreciate it. Hey, Elijah, thank you so much. Shoutouts to Elijah for calling from New York City. No, we heard from Cam Ward. And He's he's ready to go out here.
And I like it. A matter of fact, let's take a listen to Cam Ward before tonight's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Cam Ward says, This offense that I have. I got Tyler Lockett, I got Calvin Ridley, I got Pollard, you have me. Kim Ward says That our offense with the Tennessee Titans could be one of the best in the entire NFL.
Listen to Cam Wood said. Just the playmakers that I have in the backfield with me, the running back core, then especially in the receiving core. I think I also have a top five receiver core in the NFL, including the young guys who are able to make plays. It's really all about just us. Or myself putting the ball in their frame of work, letting them make a play.
And then it's also those guys being aggressive to make plays for the team. And then the O-line, I don't have to worry about them. That's going to always be the standpoint. Those guys, they bring the energy every day, especially starting with JC.
So I'm excited to be behind those guys. Those guys pass protection, they keep me clean. Let's see what they do. The AFC South is one of these divisions it let's put it this way, it's not It's not the NFC North. All right, it's it's not the AFC North It's The South is kind of whack, okay?
You start thinking about the Indianapolis Colts, they're going to just get slapped around. It's pretty ridiculous. 888-710-4ISN is the number. That's 888-710-47. 4-I-S-N.
We got David calling from LA. You're on the JR Sport Brief Show. What's up, David? Hey, good afternoon, JR. Thank you so much for taking my call.
Always a pleasure to talk to you, man. You always have some of the best conversations. Yeah. Well thank you, what's up? Yes.
So I wanted to just follow up on something that you were talking about earlier regarding who makes great coaches and why certain players seem to have a knack for coaching while others do not. I myself, I work as a teacher and you know, teaching and coaching, uh there are a lot of similarities. It's not so much about what you know. Obviously, you have to know quite a bit, but it's not so much about what you know, it's about how well you can pass that knowledge Onto the person you're trying to teach or the person that you're trying to coach. You know, being a coach, of course, is much different from being a player.
One of the reasons I think that these bench riders can be head coach, they can be better coaches than people who mightn't have necessarily been superstars. The superstars might have had the skill, but because they're constantly playing, they're focused on the moment. They're focused on next, this. This moment, whatever I have to do at this moment, to be able to make the play right now. Whereas someone who's on the bench, they're looking at the game from a bigger picture.
They can focus on what's coming up next. They're better suited at planning what's coming up next, next possession, next pitch, next at bat, next anything. And so this is why you see a lot of backup quarterbacks or bench warmers on a basketball team. They tend to make better coaches because they've had that experience while they're playing, just sitting there and watching more frequently than those who are starters and playing and excelling while they're playing. Right.
No, I I agree. I agree. It's all about your perspective. And I I think in a lot of cases and thank you, David, for calling from LA. I think on the other side of things, You start to build that rapport.
You're one of the quote-unquote guys. When people start looking at you as the superstar, you're the star, you're elevated, you can do this and people can't do that. But when you're there on the sidelines and you're hanging out with the coaches and you're with the coaches and you're talking the game, I think people start to notice that. It's not a shock that Josh McCown, who's played, he's played his share of the games, played his share of games. But more often than not, he's been standing around on the sidelines.
He might as well have been a coach. And so, when you start getting looked upon in such a way, I think it's an easier transition to make. Good point. 888-710-4ISN. Richard is calling from here in Atlanta.
You're on the JR Sport Reshow, my brother from another mother. Go ahead, Richard. Oh, yes, and you know it. This week, I got a chance to call up for David, and I'm ending it out with you. Oh, thank you.
But yeah, you don't know your producer, don't know nothing about. Corn uh with a cookout. I used to stop at Henry County before I went to work and always hit corn dolls. Get corn dogs from there.
Okay. Yeah, well, he's in New York. There's no cookout in New York. There'd be no reason for him to know, you know?
Well, yeah, but like I said, though, now now make him wish to come down there. And page 25. He is, Bacha, you are welcome to come down here whenever you want, okay? Oh, yeah, I'll definitely try it. Like, I also have to try In-N-Out, too.
Like, I've never had that.
Okay. Bunch of stuff. Let me tell you something, bruh. All these places oh, this is the best burger, burger this, burger dat Everybody slaps together these burgers. It's just wherever you live.
You know, it's all the same crap. Hey, W Wahlburger, I had that when I went to Boston. That was a good burger. Oh, here, look at you.
Okay. No, but I'm going to tell you the best Philly cheese steak. In my place I found out in Stone Mountain called We Yo. And it's got a We W E E Y U M N. Hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Is it on is it on Main Street in Stone Mountain? Yeah. Yeah, I know I know what you talk. It's like a little shack, right? Yeah.
Yeah, okay, I know what you're talking about. I know what you're talking about. Matter of fact, when he's here's the kicker. I graduated with his cousin.
Okay. And he graduated ten years later from Germantown High.
Okay, well damn.
Okay. Yeah, Bacha, you really don't know.
Now we're getting very obscure here. Hey, Richard, appreciate you. You got anything else that we can, that the country might understand? Oh yeah. Denzel was also upset with um Stephen A.
because he always put down the Cowboys. Oh, well, okay, so maybe Denzel was talking to Stephen A when he wasn't in front of him. Maybe that was his point. Yeah. Yeah.
Wait a minute. Denzel Washington is a Dallas Cowboys fan. Yeah. Oh boy.
Well, he actually remembers when they were good, even prior to Jerry Jones.
So, Tom Landry.
So, Denzel Old. He's old enough. He ain't no frontrunner.
Okay. Oh, yeah, but also, too, his son. John David Washington played in Ballers. and they're about to let that go on Netflix. What it's not on Netflix anymore?
It's about to be terminated soon. Oh, well, I remember it originally on HBO. I didn't know it was on Netflix. I watched it when it was. Oh, yeah, it was on Netflix.
Okay. Uh it's I it gotta be on HBO too, right? Yeah, it's on HBO. Yeah, it's on HBL too. Yeah, so.
All good. Oh, thank you, Richard. Hey, look, I thank you too. And like I said, you and David made my week this week. Oh, well, you made my day.
Thank you for calling, Richard. You too, my brother. I catch you soon. Shoutouts to Richard from here in Atlanta. Yeah.
Yeah, Bocce. He's telling me about all the food spots that are local. I mean, what he just told me about, that's very local. Out in Stone Mountain. That's this uh well.
There's a Confederate monument on the side of a mountain. And then it's a park. And it's a rather rather quiet quiet town over there.
So He's telling me to go by a cheesesteak place and by by happenstance, big happenstance, I used to live over there. I know exactly where he's talking about. I heard Stone something and I thought of Disney. Space Mountain. Stone Mountain.
Space Mountain. No, not Space Mountain. Um. Didn't didn't Ric Flair also mention Space Mountain? Rukfloor mentioned a lot of things in his career.
Wow. I don't know. Uh Don't know. But he he's going through a lot too. He had cancer too.
Yeah, he he's had cancer. He almost died and came back. But he's still here. I'm God bless them. If you would have told me that Ric Flair would outlive Macho Man Hulk Hogan.
Who else am I missing? Iron Shield. I don't know. A lot of them. The Iron Sheik, yeah.
I guess you could say Verg Flair, not to be disrespectful, but like Was he on as much Roy's as the others were?
Well, he was on Reuts. He was in a plane crash. Oh wow. That well, maybe all the chaos. He's invincible.
Yeah. Tolerant. Ric Flair is invincible. How old Ric Flair gotta be, like, seventy four years old? Might be older than that, might be eighty.
No, he's not. He's not 80. Come on now, he's not 80. You're talking about Major. Oh, yeah, he's 76.
He's about to be seventy seven. Wow. Damn it, he was wrestling when he was in his forties and fifties, brah. Running around out there in his underwear chopping, people going, woo, he was. Ric Flair might be invincible.
Maybe the key to a long life. I don't know if I want to be in a plane crash. I don't know if I want to be an alcoholic. I do not want cancer. I don't want to die and come back to life.
But Rick Flair's still here. He's going to outlive us all. Shout outs to Ric Flair. Nature Boy. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you, Coast to Coast, on the Infinity Sports Network, 888-710-4ISN.
That's 888-710-48. I mean Ric Flair How about this? Tom Brady is in the category of Ric Flair.
Okay, we got LeBron James in the category of Ric Flair. Guys who are old as hell. It's still out there. I'm getting a job done.
Okay, how about that? We come back. I'm going to tell you about the guy who hasn't even started his NFO career. He's hurt. We got a lot to get into.
It's the JR Sport Brief Show on the Infinity Sports Network. Don't move. Ah That's the sound of James adding long-lasting gain scent boosters to his laundry this morning. Several hours later, James sniffs the irresistible scent of gain on a shirt. Bye.
Ah, gain. Several hours later, James has even caught the attention of his mother-in-law, and she never gives him attention. You smell amazing, James. Oh, thanks, Mom. I love you too.
I never said that. Add gain sump boosters to your laundry. Add joy to your day. You are listening to the JR Sport Brief. It is the JR Sport Brief Show on the Infinity Sports Network.
eight eight eight seven ten four I S N That's eight eight eight seven ten four I S N. You know, before we went to break, we were asked about quite a bit of football questions and I was asked about Cam Ward, what he can do in the AFC South. We got some local Atlanta questions about some of the food available here in the area. And then, you know, we started, for whatever reason, thinking about Old ass athletes and you know, I Ric Flair came to mind for whatever reason and started to think that Ric Flair. A professional wrestler is invincible.
The guy survived a plane crash and a heart attack, dealt unfortunately recently with skin cancer. He basically died and came back to life at one point in time. And he was an alcoholic. Yeah, Ric Flair. is invincible.
He is. I want to tell you about a professional athlete. He has yet to really start his professional career. And um He's not invincible. You actually have to start thinking about his durability in the NFL.
And I'm referring to Travis Hunter. The Jacksonville Jaguars play their next preseason game on Sunday in Louisiana. Shout out to Louisiana. I love Louisiana. Against the New Orleans Saints.
Someone who will not be participating. Is Travis on it? He got reps on offense and defense in their first preseason game. Had an okay game. Nothing that anybody would uh.
cry home about But he's out. He is out already with an upper Body injury. You know, I've said this a couple of times over the past few days. When it comes to reporting injuries in the preseason and during training camp, You don't have to. You don't have to give the details of what it is and what it isn't.
And so you have coaches and teams that do, and you have coaches and teams that do. Not And when it comes down to Travis Hunter, his head coach, First year head coach Liam Cohen. I mean, he didn't want to. He talked about Travis Hunter. He was talking to Working While Hurt, and he gave an update as much as he could on Travis Hunter's injury.
Listen to this: upper body deal he's got a little bit, and just precautionary.
Okay, so he's. Going to play Saturday or something? We'll figure that out. Yeah, we don't know yet. What does that do for him?
Going through the play call sheet he was over there with that, you're all practice, does that help him mentally? Yeah, I think so. You know, that's what they're supposed to do when they're hurt, you know? Like, say they're locked in and have a little bit of, they can't go, we want them to make sure that they're locked in, getting all the calls, understanding the call. and being able to watch and execute it as well in their minds.
Saying Travis Hunter has an upper body injury And we don't know yet whether or not he's going to play in the next game, which happens to be on Sunday, I would venture to say He ain't playing. And and why would he? Like, we all know how great Travis Hunter is as a wide receiver, as a defensive back. We have yet to really see how he'll be employed and used throughout the course of a season. But one thing that we do know.
You can't run the guy into the ground. He is not, and I don't. This is not a knock on him, and everybody says how much of a. endurance freak that he is, that he doesn't get tired, he's still a human being. and what he's about to do is enter into a different level of football.
This ain't college, man. This isn't our college.
Okay, you're not going to have a one thousand one hundred yards receiving, fourteen touchdowns, and then play every defensive snap. That's not happening. They're going to have to pick and choose when and where he's most effective. And I'd say in that modern NFL as it stands today, you would probably want him out there as a wide receiver. We heard from Trevor Lawrence last week.
He's like, selfishly, I'd love to see him out there at Wide Out. Of course, you would. You want to put up points, you want to throw touchdowns, and so, of course, you want him out there. on offense. It's a tricky thing.
Getting em in there on defence. Just going to be on nickel packages? Are you going to slide him around? Is he going to. Is he stick to the best receiver?
Is he even ready for that yet? But one thing that you don't want to do. It's drive him into the ground. An upper body injury? Let's think about this.
Could be his shoulder. Could be a shust. I mean, if it was his back, I think they would have said it was his back. Upper back, I don't know. If it was his neck, they would have said I I think it has to be a shoulder and elbow.
Something with the chest. Upper body. He's not the biggest guy. He may never be the biggest guy. Man, we just saw Sauce Gardner.
After what, three years in the NFL? Sauce Gardner has finally said, Yeah, yeah, I put on some weight. I put on some L B's and I feel stronger. I feel better to go out there and compete. It may take Travis Hunter years.
Before he feels any type of way.
Now, he's he's a good guy, but he's still slight. He did have that lacerated liver from that. that dirty shot that he took, I believe, against Colorado State. There's another time where he already had a shoulder issue and injury. And so maybe that's why Liam Cohen doesn't want to bring it up.
It's like, hey, you got a shoulder issue. If people know that it's his shoulder, are they going to go ahead and target it if he's, you know, a wide receiver? And if you're a wide receiver, How difficult is it to have a shoulder popped out? Man, you can have a guy lower his shoulder into yours and it's curtains. For you.
And so they got to be very careful with how he plays. I wouldn't rush it. I mean, the NFL is all built on offense. They've made it more difficult for defensive players to go out there. and do their jobs.
Put him on the offensive side of the ball. Give it to him on defense every now and then. Hey, go out help us out. But I wouldn't wear him out. As much as he wants to be out there every play, Don't do it.
I'd rather have Travis Hunter. throughout the course of the season for seventeen games. Then I have him knocked out for two or three weeks because I decided to go a little too hard. with utilizing him. This was always going to be a concern.
Was he physically ready for the next level. and this could be much to do about nothing.
Well, this really could be a sign of things to come. I I wouldn't be surprised based on his injury history in college. If we saw him knocked out here or there. What do you think, Botcher? I really think that he will do the normal miss maybe three or four games, but they'll realize.
about halfway through the season They're either going to have to choose one or the other and look at it again next year. Maybe it'll do be better and fully healthy. Or they'll just limit his snaps. And I don't think limiting a snap For a guy you took top four in the draft. is good.
And you want to get them out there as mo much as possible. And I don't see how This is a win either way for the Jaguars if he's hurt. But nobody's gonna be perfect the entire time. When you say limit his snaps, what do you mean? I mean, he's going to play offense and defense.
They got to limit his snaps. Yeah, but he's not gonna be okay, so he instead of missing maybe, okay, three or four snaps per drive, he might miss a whole series. For offense. And if he goes on the defense, maybe he doesn't play an entire drive or two or an entire quarter because they're trying to keep him healthy. I and I I think that's all a part of the learning process.
I mean, we think about, and it's very different. You think about how the Angels and then ultimately the Dodgers have had to stagger. Shohei Otani, so he can get out onto the mound, how he can hit, and he still has needed Tommy John surgery. Of course, being a pitcher is just a whole nother animal in and of itself. But they've had to test this out and balance things.
I don't think it's all that different. I don't know. For baseball, there's more workarounds, and the MLB was more willing to see two-way players come into play, like Shohei. They fixed the substitution rules, all that stuff. I think they can't change.
anything for him. It just How tough is Travis Hunter? And how long will his body stay together? And I don't. See how the Jaguars keeping the future term and like the idea to win long term.
It's not smart enough. to keep him on both sides of the ball. Ooh. You think eventually he's going to have to pick a side? Yes.
I don't see his whole career being a two-way player. It's just not sustainable. Oh no, it's not. No, no, no, I I agree with you. But I uh and we've seen this throughout guys' careers.
I mean, if even if it's Woodson or Chan Bailey or Deion Sanders, even if you employ them. every now and then on on one side of the ball, just so they you keep the defense honest. I mean, we're a long way from Travis Hunter being a veteran and being weathered in the league. And I I think at the onset right now, If I were them, and what do I know? I'm not out here coaching.
Maybe this is why. We heard from Denzel Washington about people not knowing what the hell they're talking about. I I would really probably use him on offence, maybe 70% of the time. Use him on defense 30% of the time, which would probably move him over into being a third-down back. Go out there and help us play nickel on obvious passing situations.
I We're gonna find out. And unfortunately I think we both agree A lot of it is is likely to be predicated on injury. I mean here he is, upper body injury. what's what's gonna happen later in the season. How's his body going to hold up throughout the season?
We're gonna find out soon enough. Travis Hunter already dealing with an upper body injury. Could be something about nothing. But damn it, he dealt with upper body injuries when he was in college. What's going to happen with them against grown men?
We'll see. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here on the Infinit Sports Network. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. When we come back from break, hey, we talked about the legend of Ric Flair.
The legend of LeBron, the legend of, I don't know, Tom Brady. There's a Lakers legend who's getting a statue. And let's just say he wasn't all that good of a player with the Lakers, but he was as a coach. I'm going to tell you who's getting a statue next. And then yeah, we'll go back in the time machine.
We're going to take a look at a few things that took place this day in sports history. But right now it is time for a news flash. Here he is. It's Gordon Damer. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief.
It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you, coast to coast, on the Infinity Sports Network. 888-710-4ISN is the number. That's 888-710-4ISN. That's the number if you want to give me a holler before I roll out. What a busy show!
What a busy week. I feel like I was in my normal spot for three days this week and First two days of the week I was uh holding things down for Zack Gelb and And here I am, Tom Flies, when you are having fun. All right, it's been a busy show. We talked about Michigan. punishments that they'll face as a result of the sign stealing scandal Also, the improper recruiting that they did during COVID.
Got into Jacob Mizorowski. Bacha ever I I still can't believe that these Reds have have bounced back, man. It's It's nuts. Christian Yelich is still on Cycle Watch. I don't know if he's going to be a market.
What does he need right now? He needs a triple, but he has two homers, a double, and a single. and the Brewers currently lead Cincinnati ten to eight It was eight to one. in the second inning. and the brewers just just bounce back.
Jacob Mizarowski Well, he got grounded into the he got pounded into the ground in his first start back. A following that Bruised Shin one in the third innings pitched. he gave up five runs, and for the team to still win, 13-game winning streak is staring them right in the face. Let's see if the Milwaukee Brewers can go ahead and hold on. And so we talked a lot of football as well: college football.
Thank you, Bill Bender, for joining us on the sporting news. John Gruden making it very clear: hey, I'm suing the NFL, but I wouldn't mind coaching in college. We even heard from Denzel Washington. Like, Denzel is telling everybody, you know. You know we got a lot of people in sports media that should just shut the hell up.
We got a bunch of people in sports media that have never played and have a lot of opinions.
So we just got into Travis Hunter and. And he's already hurt dealing with an upper body injury, and so it's been a very busy, busy show.
Now, before we get into a few things that took place this day in sports history. We also have talked about a lot of legends. You know, somebody brought up Tom Brady when it comes to Michigan. I we got into Ric Flair, how invincible he is despite all of the trials and tribulations that he has gone through throughout the course of his life. And now we got another legend.
A Los Angeles Lakers legend. The Lakers' coach. In the eighties, who won four championships, Pat Riley. He is the next Laker. that will receive a statue outside of crypto.com arena.
Now There are so many damn statues out there.
Okay? They got Chick Hearn, the announcer, who has a statue. Shaq has a statue where he's dunking. Kobe has a statue. Elgin Baylor has a statue.
Jerry West has a statue. Abdul Kareem Abdul Jabbar has a statue. Magic Johnson. And then you got the LA Kings out there. I mean, damn it, Wayne Gretzky has a st everybody has a Botcha, do you have a statue out there?
Not yet. They're it's they're trying to get my face sculpted.
Okay. Yeah, everybody has a statue. Outside of crypto.com Arena, the former staple center.
Well, Pat Riley's statue is going to be unveiled. february twenty second. right before the Lakers take on the Boston Celtics. And Pat Riley, he was asked about this, on the Lakers' YouTube channel, and this is what he had to say a couple of months ago. And I want to thank You know, all of you guys.
You carried me. You did, you carried me for the first two or three years when I didn't know what I was doing. I want to thank Jeannie. Thank you, Jeannie, for even considering this. I loved your father.
Dearly. And he loved you. He loved you very much. And this is like: our fans are going to go bananas. They're going to love this.
So I can't wait. Thank you, Jeannie. I see all those trophies behind you. You know, we've got five of them. Yeah.
I can't believe I'm going to be in the company of Buck and Cap and Jerry. I know there's a lot of others. This is off the charts. I can't believe it. All you guys.
I'm just a kid from Schenectady, New York, you know, and here I am, you know. Gonna have a statue, you know, with the Lakers. My God. Yeah, well, Pat Riley has one hell of a legacy, not with the Lakers, but what he did for the New York Knicks, certainly with the Miami Heat. And his legacy is so big, a lot of people don't even remember that he played for the Los Angeles Lakers.
You have to be of a certain age, but. That's a hell of a legacy for some guy from Schenectady, okay? Shoutouts to Pat Riley. I still like him. I don't care who he's cursing out or what player he's telling to shut the hell up and work out.
That's you, Jimmy Butler. You you gotta appreciate somebody who's still Has something to stand on, and that means, hey, standing up and getting ready to go to work and doing your best first. Shoutouts to Pat Riley. I mean, last of a dying breed. He ain't dead.
He's not dying. He's still here. You know what the hell I mean. Anyway. Speaking of Pat Riley.
Yeah, he's he's active. But he's also a part of history. You know what? That part of the show where we go back to a few things that took place this day in sports history. Back, back, back, back!
Back in the days when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore, but some days I sit and wish I was a kid again. It's time for this day in sports history. See, back in those days, we had radio and you couldn't see anything, and it was primitive and lousy, and we liked it. The JR Sport Brief Show. I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass.
It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. It's the end of the show. It's time for a few things that took place this day in sports history. It is August 15th, 2025. Let's go back.
to 2004 because in Athens Greece The U.S. men's basketball team. We lost. We lost to Puerto Rico 92 to 73. It was the third Olympic defeat.
And the first since we got back to having Crows, okay? And we know how we ended. Not good. Team USA led by Larry Brown. We finished.
with a bronze medal. Oh my god. Yeah, that was. Horrific in Athens. Richard Jefferson, he talked about how awful and how terrible we were in 2004.
Listen to this. U.S. that up. Let's break it down. We had 12 guys on a team.
We played Argentina in Puerto Rico to qualify for the finals. The next year, nine of those 12 players say no. They're not going to the Olympics after qualifying. Then they asked 30 guys and they all said no. They field the youngest roster that they ever have of a bunch of players with zero international experience.
LeBron, D.Wade, Amari, Carmelo, all these guys. I went from a guy that didn't play to a starter in the Olympics. I didn't play the year before. After the Olympics, they recognized that their system was flawed. Oh yeah.
No, no, we screwed. You you had to have continuity. And now we're whooping ass. I mean, we won the Olympics, what, last year in France with a bunch of old guys. Thank you, Steph Curry.
Thank you, LeBron. Man, the next generation better get it together. Otherwise, we're gonna get our asses whooped again. August 15th, 2007. Yeah, we talked about cheaters earlier this week, top six list, Tim Donaghy.
He pled guilty to felony charges because he took cash from gamblers and he bet on games he officiated in.
Okay, listen to this. This is Tim Donaghy on how referees can rig a game. I guess him and Michael Porter will do a podcast next. You can call an illegal screen or traveling every time down the floor in the NBA.
So it's not like you're going to be wrong if all of a sudden you start calling it.
So you're just going to go out and you're going to do what they tell you to do. And I remember there was travels called on Yao Ming, illegal screens, and all of a sudden he's on the bench and there's a problem. And Dallas, like I said, wins the next two games and ends up winning that series in seven.
So. That's why Van Gundy was so furious because how many series. Are you up two games to none? Right, going to your home floor, and you end up winning or end up losing in seven games. Yeah, well, Tim Donny, he was a cheater, and the world continued on.
Nobody blinks an eye at the NBA. We got Tim Donnie, he, well, not Tim Donnie, Jante Porter got the boot, nobody cares. We got Terry Roger being investigated, Malik Beasley being investigated. These guys are being investigated for gambling, and the world is going on. Wait until a big guy.
Cheats, okay, a big big name, August 15th, 2012. Felix Hernandez, King Felix. He pitched the Mariners' first perfect game in the 23rd in baseball history. He went out there and beat the Rays 1-0. It was the third perfect game in that season so far.
Let's listen to King Felix get the job done. Seattle Mariners Felix Hernandez, the 2-2. 34 years, 119 games. It finally happened. A perfect game by a Seattle minor.
It was done by the King, Felix Hernandez. The 23rd. Perfect. game in Major League history. Third this year, Matt K.
Of the Giants, Philip Bumber did it here in Seattle against the Mariners, and now Felix Hernandez. Hey puts his name in. But what they purpose. Time flies, man. Time flies.
It sure as hell does. How about this, August 15th, 2020? Mm-hmm. Monet Davis, one of two girls at the Little League World Series. She threw a two-hitter and she helped her Philadelphia team beat Nashville 4-0 in the opener for both teams.
It's kind of crazy. Monet, the first girl to appear for a U.S. team in Williams Sport since 2004. She had eight strikeouts and no walks. Listen to this courtesy at ESPN.
Well, at first I was scared and nervous because there were so many people, and this is my first time in Wilmsport, so I was kind of nervous, but then. Like after Jared hit that home run, the nerves kind of went away and I knew I had to go out and throw strikes. And a ton of media attention surrounding you coming into this game, but you have handled it so well. Has it been hard for you? Not really.
I can always say no, so that's like my special weapon for the media, but hasn't been a lot. Man, you gotta appreciate what she did and what she's done.
So she actually graduated this wow, time flies. She graduated from Hampton University with a journalism degree. She interned with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the video production space. And right now, she is getting her master's in sports management at Columbia University. Shout out to my main man, Joe Favarito.
And she's probably going to do something very amazing.
So, a great story, and a story how it shows you how you can utilize sports to just elevate yourself. In a mil hey bacha, I love the music, bacha damn. Damn, bacha. Yes, we'll still talk about history. Damn.
I love how she elevated herself into doing this. Pretty amazing. And there you have it. A few things that took place this day. In sports history.
Hey, Bacha, what happens? It doesn't send tingles up your spawn like everybody else. No, I thought history kind of moved into like current history. No, we got less.
So we lo I love the music. I love the music. You know what else I love, Botcha? Um mm I don't know. What do you call?
