It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to everybody tuned in locked in all over North America.
I hope you have had a tremendous Tuesday. If you're a Boston Celtics fan, I don't know how you feeling. Trading away, poor Zingis, he gone, he's in Atlanta. You traded away Drew Holiday, he gone, he's up in Portland. Yeah, things are changing for Boston. And we got more changes coming in the NBA.
What a world. Got the NBA draft tomorrow. Cooper Flag expected to go number one overall. What comes after that?
We have no idea. We might have some more trades. Durant is already down in Houston.
We had a parade today in OKC. Man, we even had words that, a confirmation that the NFL owners colluded to pretty much prevent future guaranteed contracts. What a world.
There's so much going on. Aaron Rodgers told everybody today he's pretty sure this is going to be his last season. And so in the case of the NBA rookies, we have some beginnings. In the case of Aaron Rodgers, yeah, apparently it's the end.
How much more we got of this guy? Anyway, you got an hour more of me. I get started at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. You can always tune in on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. You got Sirius XM, it's channel 375. You got a smart speaker.
Ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. I'm in Atlanta. Thank you so much to our producer, Ryan Bottcher, holding things down in New York City. I told you it's been an eventful day. It's been an eventful 24 hours for the Boston Celtics. Last night, we learned about Drew Holliday being shipped along with his contract to Portland in exchange for Anthony Simons. And then it was a few hours ago that we learned that Chris Stepps Porzingis has been moved from the Boston Celtics to the Atlanta Hawks. The Brooklyn Nets are involved. They pick up some picks and George Niang, he makes his way up to Boston in exchange for Porzingis.
Terrence Mann goes to Brooklyn along with picks. And so the Celtics are certainly doing what it's been said. They were not. They were not going to be a second apron team. They were not going to be taxed to the gills.
Shom Sharani has said this back on June 11th as he spoke to Pat McAfee. The other big ticket item, I think, this off season is the Celtics. And what are they going to do? And the primary focus, from my understanding, with the Celtics off season has been Drew Holliday, Chris Stepps Porzingis, Sam Hauser, their trade markets. Now, our team's making big offers and calling about Jalen Brown and Derek White, 100%.
The Celtics prefer not to trade them, from my understanding. But listen, if they get a big offer, they have to look at everything. And I think they're going to get offers on the three guys that they're focused on. They're going to get offers, potentially, on Derek White and Jalen Brown. And I think between now and the draft and free agency, they're going to evaluate what makes sense from a value perspective. And that's where they're going to move. Everybody but Tatum?
Essentially. Well, we've seen what they've done already. They moved two guys who were big parts of the championship squad last year. Drew Holliday more so than Chris Stepps Porzingis.
But the Boston Celtics, they may not even be done yet. And thank you so much to Noah Dalzell for joining us from SB Nation. She covers all things Boston Celtics. She came by and gave us her thoughts.
And then also thank you to Matt Powers. He joined us earlier on in the show, NBA draft expert from Swish Theory. Yeah, things, things are not done. And so what the Celtics do, is there more? Any trade that they make after this is, is going to be absolutely nuts. Because who else are they moving? You got Brown? We know Tatum is not being traded. And then you have Derek White. I mean, well, are the Celtics going to move either one of those guys?
It'd have to be a massive return. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. Tim is here from Maine. He knows about, I guess, the Celtics and Cooper Flag. Tim, you're on the JR Sportbreeze show. What's up?
Hello. I just, I see a lot in comparison to Cooper Flag and Kaitlyn Clark and the WNBA. First of all, I am a Mainer and really rooting for Cooper Flag, followed them all along since high school. In regard to the Kaitlyn Clark-Cooper Flag comparison, I do... Wait, wait, wait. Tim, hold on a second.
Who's making this? We had a guy who said he was asking about Cooper Flag and Keith Van Horn. And now you're making the comparison between Cooper Flag and Kaitlyn Clark?
Is that what you're doing? This is just my opinion. I agree with you big time on the Keith Van Horn comparison. I just see a similarity that they're both very talented, but I think they may find that it might be a challenge with the speed and the physicality I've seen in Kaitlyn Clark's case. Well, Tim, Tim, did you see what Kaitlyn Clark did last year?
Yes. She didn't have no problems in the league, okay? They came back from the Olympic break and Kaitlyn Clark broke their asses. There's no issue with Kaitlyn Clark and the physicality of the WNBA. She was talking trash to Connecticut Sun last week and putting up threes in their faces. There's no issues with Kaitlyn Clark, man. I think that she's kind of been roughed up on occasion and... They have attempted to... Yes, she's been fouled hard.
Yes, they've been players who are jealous of her that try to take her out. But to say that Kaitlyn Clark is having issues with the physicality of the WNBA, no. That is not accurate.
Speedwise, too. I think that there's a big difference. All right, Tim. All right. Well, thank you.
Anything else? Well, I just think he's 18 years old, as you mentioned, and that might be a hard drive with some of the big boys in the NBA. Well, Tim, I want to remind you, LeBron James played against him last year. I don't know my opinion, your opinion, LeBron James' opinion.
I don't know which one I'd go with. But it was quite apparent that Cooper Flag, in an Olympic run against United States Olympic athletes, who some of them are in their 30s, they're much older than him, they're bigger and stronger. He had a stretch where he hung in there with them without an issue.
So I will remind you of that. But I think maybe taking precedent over it all, Tim, I want you to listen to what LeBron James had to say about Cooper Flag. I personally think that he wants to be great. A guy that can do so many different things on the floor, can play with the ball, can play without the ball. You know, his jump shot is going to continue to get better, super athletic, quick second jump. And also, he has the benefit, unlike myself, he gets to join a team that's established with Hall of Fame guys, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, right off the bat, Hall of Fame coach, Jason Kidd.
They can give him the whole blueprint while he continues to learn what his blueprint will be. And I think that's going to be an incredible thing for him to have. So I think he's going to be amazing. All right, Tim, did you hear LeBron James say that he's fast, has a quick first step, and he's athletic?
Did you hear that? I agree very much. I think the Olympic comparison, that's a very short season and the NBA will be a very long season. I hope that you and LeBron are correct. I want him to succeed.
Well, why are you so down about it? Of course, there's an adjustment going from college to the pros. Of course, all of a sudden, having to be tasked with playing 82 games, and it wasn't an Olympic season. And the point isn't so much about whether or not he's going to have the stamina to play. I think he will.
He's 18 years old. Of course, he's going to hit a wall. Of course, he's going to get tired.
Of course, his body has to get used to doing this. The point is, when it comes to him as a singular talent, he possesses the physical skills to play in the NBA. I don't think it's a matter of you hope, me and LeBron are right. Thank you so much for putting me in the category of LeBron James when it comes to basketball information. I'm just going to go by what LeBron says.
I'm going to go by what my eyes have shown me. I expect him to come in, struggle, have good games, have bad games. I expect him to have a bad game and people to overreact. I expect to see him have a great game and people overreact. That's a part of being a rookie.
That's a part of being a rookie. That's your guy from Maine. He's proud to be from Maine.
Tim, listen to Cooper Flag rep yo state. Yeah, I mean, it's been incredible talking about Maine United, you know, being with my guys that I was with since fifth grade, staying with them and playing at you all the way up through was amazing. And I think, you know, being able to prove, you know, to the state of Maine that it doesn't matter. You know, people say that like nobody comes from Maine, like you can't make it as a basketball player and things like that. I think that's a huge, a huge message that I like to, you know, try and send and, you know, prove.
And, you know, it could be even bigger than Maine and anything could be from anywhere in the world. Just proving that it doesn't matter where you're from. And if people believe in you or not, that you just got to believe in yourself.
No, believe in yourself. Oh, how sweet. Tim, just let's take it easy. Okay. Tim, I wouldn't worry about Cooper Flag.
I think you'll be perfectly fine. And then speaking of his new team, the Dallas Mavericks, apparently we have some news about one of his teammates. Botcher, what's the deal with Kyrie Irving? So Kyrie Irving is opting out of his $43 million player option and intends to sign a three year new contract. Three years, $119 million. So a little bit less AAV, but a three year deal for Kyrie.
Good for him. I mean, I don't know how Kyrie Irving is going to age. I mean, given the fact that he is already 33 years old, he's had a history of injuries dating back to his time at Duke. Kyrie Irving isn't someone that I just, you know, hand over a three year deal, taking him into his age, you know, 33, 36 season, given the fact that he just blew out his leg. And it seemed that that was, well, A, he's always been injury prone. But then also you think about his usage.
Yeah, that's that's going to be tough. But if you're the Dallas Mavericks and you've already invested into bringing him in, why the hell not? I mean, there were massive concerns when he was in Brooklyn about whether or not he'd get another gigantic contract.
And God bless him. I mean, for everything that took place a few years ago with his tweets and his messages and covid and what have you, he got himself a new contract. And so three years, one hundred and nineteen million dollars extension with the Dallas Mavericks. So there's going to be some comfort that even if he misses almost all of this upcoming year, that he will be sticking around for another one. So good luck and congratulations to Kyrie Irving in that regard. I don't think that changes anything for the Dallas Mavericks and me. I know that we can take a look at Nico Harrison, who talked about, you know, the importance of going out here and trying to win now. I just think he hitched his horse to two old broken down players, and that's Anthony Davis and Kyrie. And so at least Cooper Flag is there. You can go ahead and build off of him.
Everything after that is pretty much debatable. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. Cooper Flag isn't the only big name that we've been hearing about. I'm pretty sure at this point you've heard about Ace Bailey out of Rutgers, the man who had a workout schedule with the Philadelphia 76ers and then declined. And it's pretty much declined any type of workout, had one set up with the Sixers and then just said, uh, no thanks. And so today, ahead of the NBA draft, as a lot of the prospects are sitting down with the media, they're asking, they're like, what's going on? And today, Ace Bailey, he's played the I don't know nothing. I ain't seen nothing.
I can't tell you nothing. I'm just here. This is what he had to say to Monica McNutt on ESPN about his decision to just not work out. Focus on basketball. I mean, end of the day, it's basketball. I mean, don't worry about the other stuff.
I let my people around me handle it. The only thing I'm focused on is the basketball part. Speaking of the basketball part, Dylan has been your right-hand man, your partner in crime. How has sharing this journey with him made it more unique?
A blessing. I mean, let me know that I got my day one next to me. Let me know we, all the blood, the sacrifice we put together in the gym ourselves.
I mean, from the late nights in the gym, from the early mornings, it's finally paying off and we got a lot more to do. Yeah, that's in reference to his, his teammate with Rutgers, Dylan Harper Jr. Son of Ron.
Look, they must know something that I don't know. He believes in the people around him, his family. I think his, his aunt played in the WNBA. That's not the NBA. There's familiarity here when it comes to basketball. Paul George was actually on his own podcast, P podcast.
And what a world. Paul George still podcasting. He pretty much said that he thinks that the information that he's getting is, is not good advice. And so he could be costing himself millions and millions of dollars, but if he wants to go to a team and he wants to jack up shots and that's going to show everybody that he's deserving of a contract extension in a few years, then that's the thought. And does he want to go to a well-established team? Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he wants to play for the wizards. Maybe he wants to be Jordan Poole.
I have no idea. We're going to find out tomorrow how, how much this is going to impact his draft stock. Of course, it's not the NFL. He's not going to fall like Shadore Sanders did into multiple days.
But this is certainly going to affect where he's drafted. And we're going to find out in about 24 hours from now. 888-710-4ISN.
That's 888-710-4ISN. When we come back on the other side, I did mention to you, and we'll talk more about this tomorrow. The NFL was in the news today. Not for Aaron Rodgers and saying that he's getting ready to quit. We'll talk about that too. But apparently the NFL owners colluded to stop guaranteed salaries after you-know-who DeSean Watson got his from the Cleveland Browns. I'm going to talk to you about that. We'll hear from Aaron Rodgers about hanging him up. Of course, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history. We have so much more to do. You want to call me?
You can. 888-710-4ISN. Don't, don't be afraid of how Cooper Flag is going to turn out. It's the JR Sport Brief Show, the Infinity Sports Network. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network.
Well, there's somebody who might do the opposite of that every now and then. It's Aaron Rodgers. He popped back up on Pat McAfee earlier today. Aaron Rodgers wasted no time in letting everybody know that this year I'm about to be done. I think we all kind of knew that. Let's listen to what he told Pat McAfee.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is it. You know, that's why we just did a one-year deal. Steelers didn't need to, you know, put any extra years on that or anything. So, you know, this was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I've had. I mean, I've played 20 freaking years, you know, like it's been a long, a long run. I've enjoyed it.
And what better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL. Ah, love and peace. This is what he's doing it for. Love and peace. Okay.
All right. Good for Aaron Rodgers in that regard. Speaking of love and peace, we know that that really doesn't exist in the NFL. We also learned today that through a special investigation that the NFL owners, what a surprise, they colluded to prevent any additional future guaranteed contracts after the Cleveland Browns decided to look at Deshaun Watson and go, here's $230 million, even though you had about approximately two dozen cases of sexual assault levied against you.
Why the hell not? You know, market correction for the Browns. And so this isn't something that was widely reported.
Let's be real. The majority of the television distributors have a relationship with the NFL. They're not going to bite, quote unquote, the hand that feeds them or pretty much they're not going to try to take a crap on a business partner by putting out putting out terrible news.
Like sometimes there are things that you can't avoid. This is apparently one of them. This is what Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk had to say about the NFL pretty much trying to put their foot on the necks of the Players Association and the players. What happened was Deshaun Watson gets his fully guaranteed contract.
The management council tells the teams to collude, encourages them to collude, and then they just don't. But when we look at the evidence as it relates to three quarterbacks, and this is the other thing that I really didn't expect until I saw the document. There are details in there about specific contractual negotiations that we never have seen before. It's a look behind the curtain that's unprecedented for Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, and Russell Wilson. All of them who negotiated their contracts at or about the time Watson got his deal and then finished the negotiations later. We know Lamar Jackson, he had his contract pretty much completed the day of the NFL draft a couple seasons ago. Apparently Lamar Jackson, he wanted a fully guaranteed deal. Eric DaCosta, the GM of the Baltimore Ravens, was just like, no. Lamar Jackson then just said, well, I want to be traded.
He asked, hey, well, what teams you want to be traded to? Lamar Jackson didn't respond. And then it was right before the draft that he tendered him a new contract without the fully guaranteed language. And Lamar Jackson, I guess, realized, OK, I don't have too much of a market.
And he accepted the deal. Apparently, Lamar Jackson, not apparently. We know that he's lobbying for a new contract right now. Both he and the Ravens are having discussions.
He's probably going to get paid north of 60 million dollars jumping ahead of Dak Prescott. But this is what Florio had to say about Lamar Jackson's situation before he got his deal a few years ago. Lamar's probably pissed that this is all getting out there. My guess is he's pissed.
So then. And DaCosta said, as the time the draft is approaching in 2023, he's assuming he's moving on without Lamar Jackson. They're probably looking at quarterbacks in the 2023 class. What can we do if we're not going to have Lamar?
We need to do something. But they made one last offer to Lamar and to DaCosta's surprise. That's directly from the document to his surprise.
Lamar accepted. Yeah. Well, look. Can anybody be surprised? And I joke about it. You got a bunch of billionaires sitting in a room eating the finest of cheese and steak and hors d'oeuvres for these NFL meetings and nice conference rooms or caves, lights.
And then they're being they're being rich, you know what? Like, what are we we don't think that NFL owners sit around and wink, wink and not even so wink, wink, maybe some of them are smart enough not to have it documented. Don't don't talk to Gruden about documenting things.
He might send you an email. Still, we don't think these owners sit around and just go, man, you see what that idiot you see what them hassles did over there. They gave that man two hundred and thirty million dollars guarantee.
Now I got to pay my guy two hundred and thirty. He will not get off my ass about a guaranteed contract. Man, let's not do this anymore.
Man, I'm with you. We're not doing it. Boom. Collusion.
There it is. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that people in power, you know, they go, why do I want to give them more? You know, we have one idiot who stepped out of line and now everybody's going to be asking for some more. Like, I don't I don't think this is ground breaking news. But of course, it is ironic and Mike Florio decided to pretty much put out there that no one is reporting on this. You know, this was initially a grievance that was filed by the NFL Players Association. And let's just say it doesn't benefit the Players Association to also come out and make a big fuss or stink about this. There's so much money being spent in the NFL coming in from the new television contracts and the television deals and streaming. Don't rock the boat. The money's going up. You know, make your next fuss, make your next stink. When it comes down to renegotiating the next collective bargaining agreement, it doesn't make sense to go ahead and do it now.
The NFL is dirty in that regards. And who'd be surprised on that? Rich people getting together and deciding to make decisions. What a world.
Billionaires versus millionaires. Not a surprise. Eight, eight, eight, seven, ten for ISN.
That's eight, eight, eight, seven, ten for ISN. Botcher, is this is this newsworthy? I think it is that the NFL and the other owners are squeezing out potential contracts and the ability for players to be paid what they're deserved. It's kind of limiting the market and not good. And nobody nobody's talking about it in the mainstream because they all they're all business partners with the NFL. I mean, we haven't heard anything different. In Major League Baseball, like service, service time, manipulation outside of service time manipulation, we can think about how late guys are being signed right now. It's dudes are pulling up on spring training without contracts.
And so it's I think it goes beyond nod, nod, wink, wink. I think it's just very out in the open like, man, we got to we got to bring these contracts down. I mean, you talked about it last week. You got a guy like Steve Cohen who comes in and he's spending big bucks and you got other teams that are just rolling their eyes going, oh, my God, this guy's going to break the bank. And yeah, I can put some more money in my own pocket.
But there's going to be an expectation that I come through and spend as well. So it is news. It is big news. But none of these none of these media organizations who broadcast that the games are going to, you know, they're not going to, quote unquote, cross the boss that they're paying for this.
And so they're like, I think from their perspective, it's like, ah, big deal. Don't have nothing to do with us. People are still going to tune in on a Sunday and a Monday and a Thursday and Friday and Saturday.
Why do we care? It sucks that that's the case. This is going to go away. This is bad in that regard. Marco, this is it's news, but it's business as usual.
It is. And it's also it's an impossibility to really kind of prove collusion. I mean, they did it once, I think in baseball, like 87 or something like that. But it's hard to owners are smart enough not to really talk about it in the open.
It's just the idea that these guaranteed contracts are going to be the end of us because we can't do that with football players because they get hurt. So everybody, let's be smarter than this. And how do you do you make a group think or is it collusion? It's hard to know where that line is. We all know what it is. But to actually prove it, it's hard. You sit at a lunch and just go, man, you see that idiot did down there?
Right on done prop done. Right. As long as you're not saying, hey, make sure you don't do I mean, you know what I mean? Like it's just a bunch of guys getting together that all give out contracts to go, you know, this is really stupid what they did, right? No one else is going to be looking at, you know, how do you prove that?
I don't I don't know if you can. And I don't I think it's a little naive. A lot of times you'll hear people say, well, well, how do you tell a billionaire what to do? They think differently, like, yeah, all right. There are other billionaires and then I want to lose money and then all bad, all in the same, all in the same pot, all in the same business, splitting and sharing money.
What do they say? What's what's good for the goose is good. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Yeah, I mean, again, you every once in a while, you'll get a rogue type of it's rare.
Yeah, dumb ass hassle. Right. But it's rare.
But it's even rare. He gave the money to a pervert. Yeah, look, no one seemed to understand that from the start.
Pervert, pervert. Yeah. Even if you took that out, which you can't, it was still kind of a dumb contract. And he went over the moon to get him to go to Cleveland because he wanted nothing to do with Cleveland.
And then you step back and you're like, you wanted the guy that was worried about the massage parlors, you need him that bad to guarantee a full contract. It was dumb all the way around. And the fact that it blew up in their face, it makes any owner go, you know what, maybe it was a good move. Nope, it wasn't a good move.
So let's not go rogue. Let's stick with the with the plan, which is non guaranteed money, because that's what it's all about. The NFL, every contract is funny money. It's about the guaranteed money.
And that's what they don't want to do. Man, the Browns, the Browns deserve everything that happened to them. What a world. What a world. It's the JR Sport re-show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. We're going to take a break when we come back and we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history. And then Aaron Rogers wasn't the only person or organization to make an announcement today. The SPs is coming up in a few weeks and we got a host for the SP Awards. I'll tell you who it is on the other side of the break.
But right now it's time for a newsflash. You just heard him. It's Marco Belletti. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. We all love singles. A good single up the spine is a good thing.
Anyway, yeah, we'll get to a few things that took place this day in sports history in a few minutes. Kyrie Irving getting a three year contract extension, one hundred and nineteen million dollars. Dallas Mavericks brought him in. I mean, you might as well ride him till the wheels fall off. I don't know how beneficial this is going to be, but this is one of those situations where, hey, you brought him in, you invested in him, you traded for him.
You keep him. I don't know what Kyrie is going to look like at age thirty six, but. We're going to find out in a Mavericks uniform, I assume. I guess he'll be feeding lobs up to Cooper Flag. He'll be thirty six and Cooper Flag will be twenty one years old. What a world man. Anthony Davis will be on the sidelines and some Gucci shades and some big furry coat.
I don't know. Dallas Mavericks are funny. At least Cooper Flag will be a positive for tomorrow. Can't wait to see how everything shakes out. Of course, we'll be live here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. It's not a draft show, but of course, we will be live during the draft to help deliver some of the information that we receive throughout the course of it. OK, I did also tell you before we get to a few things that took place this day in sports history, we got a we got some news on something that's getting ready to come up. The ESPY Awards are getting ready to take place.
You know, ESPN's version of the Academy Awards, the Emmys, the Oscars, what have you. And we got a new host over the past couple of years. We've heard from Drake and John Cena.
Oh, this go round. It's Shane Gillis, who I must admit. I know who the hell he is. I've I've never watched his stand up, but have you watched any of his shows? So I watched his Netflix special, the first one. I thought it was pretty funny.
Other than that, I haven't seen any specials. I did watch clips from his SNL hosting appearances. Is this the dude who walks or he takes his shirt off and he drinks beer? No, this isn't Bert Kreischer. This is the same same genre genre.
I would say same same type of audience. Does he have a beard? He has a mustache. Oh, he has a mustache. He has a mustache. OK, well, is this joke we can listen to this joke on the air?
Yeah, I bleeped it. And then have you seen the Bud Light commercials with Post Malone? He's in it with him. So I know Post Malone. He's skinny.
I don't pay attention to who's in the commercial. I don't know. If you see him, you'll know. Let's listen to the joke. You ever see that painting of George crossing the Delaware? Standing.
He's the only one standing on the rowboat. Everyone else is like, George, you got to get down. They're over there.
Get them. You know what happened that day when George crossed the Delaware? It was Christmas Day and it was a bit of a massacre because George caught the British off guard because the British absolutely correctly assumed. They were like, well, the guys are going to try to cross this icy river today in a rowboat.
Unfortunately for them, our first president was on the other side of that river. It's like, get in the boat. We got to kill these. I got to be I checked out in the first five seconds of that joke. Yeah.
He's a lot better jokes, but they're not for air. So it's like, oh, OK. Yeah. So it's like the guy who calls up on the Friday funny talking about women's body parts like that. It's not really body part.
It's more of like he does like Trump impersonations. No, that's not specifically botcher. I'm just saying in a general sense, it's not inappropriate. It's not appropriate. Yes. OK. OK, got it.
All right. Anyway, time for a few things that took place this day in sports history. Back in the days when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore.
But some days I sit and wish I was a kid again. It's time for this day in sports history. You see, back in those days, we had radio and you couldn't see anything. And it was primitive and lousy.
And we like on the J.R. Sport Brief Show. I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass. June 24th, 2025 is the year that's today. But if we go back to this day in 1992, some gigantic man out of LSU was selected number one overall by the Orlando Magic. His name? Well, listen, courtesy of the NBA. Shaquille O'Neal welcoming him to elite status among professional athletes around the world. Yeah, I heard I heard Shaquille O'Neal did OK for himself.
I heard he was an OK basketball player. June 24th, 1995, the New Jersey Devils, they won the Stanley Cup for the very first time. They beat the Detroit Red Wings five to two and they swept them. Take a listen to this. Courtesy of Fox Sports in the devil's locker room, a newspaper quote had the following passage underline. We have the heart of a champion. You cannot measure it. You can only feel it. A quote by a team, Elijah, one of the NBA champion Houston Rockets.
They're going to have a few quotes in the papers tomorrow. Let's not forget about Detroit, their red wings, their coaching staff and their great hockey city. They battled to get here for the first time in a long time, but they were beat by a much better hockey club, much better hockey club. The championship to New Jersey, the Devils win the Stanley Cup. And you want to talk about funny? The Devils, their mascot is funny. He has some funny ESPN commercials.
How about this? June 24th, 2012, John Wall, he was selected number one overall in the NBA draft. The Wizards took him and he hit the Dougie and then he was sitting around with these podcasts are terrible. He was sitting around with Paul George and he said he's the best wizard ever.
What? It's funny, bro, because I do. I know how much Gil mean to the city and how he embraced the community the same way I did.
I feel like I'm that guy. I mean, just for going number one, being there, embracing the city the way I did, the way I did, the way they're embracing me. I definitely call myself the greatest wizard, but I don't really like to say that unless other people say it.
It's a debate to have, but I respect Gil for that. When it's all said and done, you feel like number two should be hung in that rafters in DC. That would be something I would love, man, for my family. I would love that for the team that drafted me. Number one, that would be great.
I think for the city, they would love that and embrace that for sure. But you know, DC will always be home to me, bro. I connected with the fans. I connected with the community.
They always hold a special place in my heart, but for damn sure my jersey should be in the rafters, bro. Am I on crack? The answer is no.
Don't answer that. Am I missing something? And he's arguing about Gilbert Arenas between one of the... Did Wes Unself not exist? Did the guy not win a title?
Did he not win an MVP? I know I'm not on crack. Anyway, that's not something I expected to hear. Damn. June 24th. Damn, I can't believe John Wall said that.
Damn. 2018. Shout out to all my football fans. Harry Kane had a hat trick. England had a World Cup victory. I can't... I still can't believe he said that.
Anyway, England beat up on Panama six to one, whooped they ass in the World Cup. We'll skip that one. Hey, let's go ahead to this. I still can't believe he said...
I can't believe he said... Batra, pause the music. What the hell is wrong with John Wall? I would say, you know, he thought he was really a franchise piece back in the mid-2010s, where he led them to the playoffs. He was an All-Star, All-Pro.
I'm the best guy in franchise. He never won the title. Anyway, we got one more thing that took place this day in sports history. Turn the music back up. There we go.
I like that. Last year, June 24th, the Florida Panthers, well, we know they went back to back against the Oilers. This time last year, they won that game seven against the Oilers two, two, one.
This is Sam Reinhardt with a goal in game seven, Panthers radio. All right. I'm kind of sad. Those are a few things that took place this day in sports history.
Like, what's next? Joel Embiid, is he going to pronounce himself on a podcast that he is the greatest sixer of all time? Excuse me? He did get MVP.
Win anything else. Are you on crack? Are you on crack?
Nope. But I'm just saying John Wall has one memorable Dougie. The point the point is, who cares?
That's my point, Botcher. Who gives a flying bleep, OK, about an MVP? I don't care. Win something. Win a team award.
Win a championship. I'm very familiar with the accomplishments of Joel Embiid. I've heard of him, just like I've heard of Shaq. The point is, we have so many players who are unaware of what took place before them or appreciate what took place before them.
And so that is an example. That was the point, Botcher, is that, yes, this man won an MVP. And for all of the players that preceded him with the Sixers, who've actually won a championship and done more, there was that guy with the Afro flying around. It's just sad. I hope John Wall is doing something good.
I think I've seen him on TV here or there. But to think that, why do you want to hang up mediocrity? Why? For the bit.
I'm sorry? The bit for the joke. But to be fair, Joel Embiid is an icon in Philly, though the last few years it's not been good. And John Wall too.
He was a small light for them. Botcher, you're missing the point. You're missing the point. But at the same time, you did say, you know, John Jones at 37 was old and elderly guys in his 55 close to elderly.
So I don't know. It's pretty old. One day you should be so lucky to be alive to see that, OK? I don't want to feel it.
I don't want to be old. Thank you so much. It's the end of the show, Botcher. And thank you so much to Noah Dalzell for coming through to talk about the Celtics. Thank you to Matt Powers for joining to talk about the NBA draft. You can find me online at JR Sport Brief. We'll be back tomorrow to talk about the draft.
We will not be handing out crack on the JR Sport Brief show. Thank you, Botcher. Be safe. Be well, everybody. Bart Winkler coming up next.
