Merry Christmas. Everyone's like, surely they're going to take the day off for Christmas. Nope.
No. We're coming at you here on the Clearview Today Show. While everybody else is taking the day off, having fun, snoozing, eating disgusting ham by the fireplace, we in here.
Oh, whoa, whoa. Let's not call ham disgusting. I like the fireplace and the ham. You like it.
Those are wonderful things. Y'all gonna eat ham on Christmas? You just don't like disgusting ones. Uh, yeah. You don't want disgusting. I don't want a disgusting ham or a disgusting fireplace.
I've had ham before where people are like, ah, I brought y'all a Christmas ham and it's like slices of ham with pineapple on it swimming in juice. Mm. Yeah. No, that I don't love.
Was that a mm that sounds good? You know what I do love? What? You know what I do love? You're listening to Clearview Today with Dr. Abaddon Shaw.
That's what he loves. The daily show that engages mind and heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm Ryan Hill. I'm John Galantis. That's right. We want you guys to help us keep the conversation moving forward. You can do that by supporting the show.
All of this baboonery over here at the Clearview Today Show. You can. No, don't do it. Why would you put that in the upfront? I thought it would I thought it would be like after all that silliness we did all that tomfoolery.
It would be like it would be a good way to do it. I only had one. No, sir. Baboonery was bad, but that was an easy one though. I feel like some of the difficulty doesn't quite scale. Dr. Shaw gets the hardest words.
I'll give him that. Do you do that on purpose? Dr. Shaw gets to the hardest.
You give me the hardest ones? Well, who are you looking at? Let me finish the intro real quick. I did not get baboonery past Dr. Abbadon Shaw, who is who is, in fact, a Ph.D. Who's not a baboonery. Not in baboonery, but in New Testament textual criticism. Professor at Carolina University, author, full time pastor and the host of today's special Christmas episode. That's what I would like. Where do I find a Ph.D. in baboonery?
I got one right here on the Clearview Today Show. Can I deal with some baboonery by certain people who don't behave well? That's true. You're being a baboon. What's the what's the Christmas verse of the day, my friend. The Christmas verse of the day.
By the way, how are you feeling? This is Christmas day. This is your day.
Oh, I'm I'm sitting pretty. And this is and this is like what you've been waiting for. I'm holly and jolly.
This is this is what you've been waiting for all December. Dr. Shaw, how's your Christmas morning going, my friend? Going very well. There you go.
Going very well. I have a I had a secret gift for Nicole. Oh, yes.
Very nice. I had one too. Secret gift for Nicole. You had a secret gift for Nicole? Well, no, I had one for my wife. That would have been awkward if you did.
I'll talk I'll talk about it here in a minute. But first, we need to hear the verse of the day. The verse of the day today is coming to us from Luke chapter two, verses 13 and 14. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. I think if you choose any other verse for Christmas for a Christmas episode, you're doing it wrong.
Pretty much going to get canceled. Not that you can read God's word wrong. I mean, I guess you can, but I think choosing the verses.
You're doing it wrong. I think you get canceled. That's the quintessential Christmas verse. Sure. Yeah, you got it. You got to. And, you know, it's funny.
I don't know if it was just the peanuts thing where Linus read it, but but and like all the like they always do the thing where the kids will read it. But there's something about that verse that just feels Christmas. And I guess that's really at the heart of it is Jesus is coming. Yeah, that's right.
That's right. And this response from the angels. Amen. Amen.
Well, are you ready for some Christmas? You expected me to say more about that verse. But the problem is, there's nothing. What can I add to that verse? Read that verse again. And suddenly there was with the angel.
He got away from it. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. Yeah. I mean, what can you add?
What more can you add? Now, if you want me to say something, I can say it. It can also be peace on earth to men of goodwill. Oh, OK. Yeah. There is that variation possibility there. Is that is it a majority reading?
Is that no, it's not really like that. I think it's more about translation. Oh, gotcha. Gotcha. So peace on earth, goodwill to men or peace on earth and to men of goodwill, men of goodwill. Gotcha.
So there is that and I can get into the Greek part of why it's like that. So, yes, peace on earth and goodwill to men, to everybody God has come or those whose hearts are open. Mm hmm. Right.
Those whose hearts are willing to hear God to them. Yeah. Peace has come. Yeah. Do you want to talk about your secret gift to Nicole or do you want to wait and talk about that another day? I can. I mean, it doesn't matter, but I can maybe maybe.
Yeah, I can talk about it. Go for it. Go for it. So this won't air until Christmas Day. So I think you're safe. Yeah. So I was I was shopping and got her a nice leather jacket.
Nice. Yeah. I don't think she's ever had a leather jacket. So I felt like it's not like a Fonzie leather jacket, like a black.
Is it black? Oh, yes. Oh, yeah.
Yes. It's like Sandy's jacket. Really? It is a Sandy jacket. She's she's going to put it on and say, tell me about it.
Yeah, that's it's a Sandy jacket. OK, very nice. Yeah.
She can perm her hair up and everything she wants to. Yeah, I got Ellie a secret gift in a secret in that we agreed we're just going to give each other to like two small things because we're saving up for a house. But we I got her I got her a secret one. And the way I did it was we went shopping for everybody, like all the Clearview people. And we had a list and an agenda.
She was like, we're going to we're going to hit this really, really hard. We're going to stick together. As soon as we got in the mall, I was like, hey, I'm going to go somewhere. I'm going to go to GameStop.
You go to Belk. She was shopping for for Libna. And she was like, no, let's please just stick together. And I was like, I'm just going to run to GameStop because I'm going to get the Hill kids something. I might pick something up for my brother in law and it'll be better, which is like you were going to shop for her for in reality. Yeah.
Yes. I was trying to get away from her so I could get her something. Why do why do ladies not understand? She's just she context clues. It's that close to Christmas. I'm trying to slip away from you for a reason.
Yeah. So so she was like she was like, no, please. We can we not split up?
I don't want to have the kids. I was like, I'll take I'll take Gavin. You take Holden. He's in the stroller. He's watching this movie. He's all good. She was like, I'm really asking if we can stick together.
And so I was like, hmm, no. And I took Gavin and I was like, I'll see you. I'll see you when you get to this again, because, yeah, Wednesday night, there's something there's and I there's something I got to get this done now. She texted me in a fit of rage. I'm standing in line buying her. It's a really, really nice cross necklace.
I don't think it's real diamonds, but they look real. So hopefully that's good enough. But she said, I never want you to come with me anywhere again. It's so terrible because it's so terrible spending time with me.
You can stay your grouchy behind at home. You were while you're paying for while I'm paying for this necklace. She said you were becoming like your father and it's not attractive. You have rushed me in multiple occasions, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. She was just going on.
She said, I'm beyond done with you this month. I got something similar. Really? Yeah.
So it was I said this morning, yesterday morning, I was like, let's go to the Y is going to be busy. I don't care to go. I want to do shopping on Amazon. Now, I do shop on Amazon if I need to. Nicole is the one that wanted to stay home and shop on Amazon.
Stay home. OK, OK. And I'm like, I know where this jacket is or something like this. I didn't exactly the jacket, but I knew where this jacket would be. Right. To shout out to Tickner's. Tickner's in Crabtree Mall or you can find them at South Point Mall.
They're not and they're not paying us for this. But there's this amazing, fantastic clothes. I actually was in Tickner's yesterday.
It's incredible. Yeah, it's incredible we didn't run into each other. Yeah.
So, I mean, they're phenomenal people and you go in there, they'll treat you like a king. Was Tony there when you were when you went in? Tony was there. Blake was there. Yes. Was Blake the guy that had the purple jacket on yesterday? He had the little chain? Yes, I think so.
Yes. So Tony and Blake were there when we were there. And Holden had a little Pikachu. And I guess Tony's a Pokemon fan because he was like, oh, is that Pikachu?
He's like gearing up for an attack. And Gavin was like, Pikachu evolves into Raichu. He was like, yep, you got to use a thunderstorm or else it's not going to work. And Gavin was like, who is this guy?
How do you know these things? And so then Tony looked at Holden. Blake is working on 10 years from now, sending a suit to Gavin. He's like, this guy's coming back to me. So he looked at Holden and was like, can I just get a Pikachu yellow? He was like, can you say Pikachu?
And Holden screamed and he was like, Pikachu! And I was like, oh my gosh. I was like, all right, all right. And then they just kept doing it because I was trying to make the purchase. And Tony, all they wanted to do was just have Holden scream in the store. And I was like, people were shopping. And I was like, all right, all right, buddy. All right, like patting him.
And then Tony just kept hyping him up. Oh, that's funny. So I was like, oh, OK, OK. And then I looked at Ellie and was like, can you roll them out? Just roll them out.
Let me finish this. And then as they were rolling them out, Tony was like, Pikachu! And so it was just, it was really insane.
Holden had the best time. They were insane. They were getting to scream in public and get praise for it.
And the thing is, great. The guys at Tickner's clothing store, I mean, that's who they are. Oh, yeah, they're fantastic guys. They're not pretending.
They're really genuinely that. And so I wanted to go there. And Nicolo that morning was like, I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I really don't want to go.
I don't know why you want us to go through all that. And then finally, I got the thing in a box. And so I pretended like it was a gift from me. So you're going to put a gift from yourself to yourself?
I'm like, yeah. I mean, it's in a box. Might as well leave it in.
There's something under the tree. OK. That's pretty stinking funny. Yeah, may as well just open it with the rest of the family.
Just open it all together. That is funny. Very cool. Well, hopefully by now she's seen it.
She loves it. I think it's all good. I wanted to start something. A tradition.
Sure. Where we watch. Christmas time. It's a great time to do that.
Christmas time is a good time to do family traditions. Dr. Shah, do you know who Patti LaBelle is? Who doesn't know?
Do you know what I'm referencing? But I also know her as a singer. She's a phenomenal singer.
Yes. She's a legend. A diva.
Of course. She's a diva. She had a diva moment where honestly, I feel like in this moment, I kind of understand her diva-ness here, but this is a video that has gone beyond viral.
And I wanted to start a tradition last year where we watch this every Christmas just to remember the horror of the 1992 Christmas tree ceremony. Can we see how many views there are on the video? Yeah. There's 2.9 million. Goodness.
2.9 million. I'm sure there's other videos that have more, but the thing that gets me is I've seen this video so many times and only very recently that I realized this took place at the White House. Oh, was it the White House? This is on the White House lawn. Oh, wow.
I didn't realize that. This is on the White House lawn. So I would say Bill Clinton was there? Yes.
Yes. It was in 92. Ooh. It was in 92.
Maybe he deserved it. Let's watch. Let's watch.
Dr. Shaw, I want you to watch this and just kind of do it with the auspice of like, what would you do if you were organizing this event? Okay. I'm ready. All right. All right. Here we go.
Oh, man. Patty's recording and acting career has pushed her to the pinnacle of show business. Where are you going? What's happening to her this time?
I don't know. Come back, Patty. I think she came up too early.
Too soon. Yeah, I know. Welcome. Welcome.
Welcome. Like, this looks like it was, like, with all the kind of goof ups, it's like, oh, this might be like a convention center or like a rec center or something, a fire department. This is on the White House lawn. She already knows something's wrong. I don't know the song. Oh, no, that was a pretty good ad. Oh, oh, my word. Yes, it's bad.
This is what I have stress dreams about. Yeah. Someone got fired that day. So did they not come out? They come out real late.
They come out, like, on the next chorus. She has to get through a whole nother verse. Look, she's furious. Oh, my God.
Now they're out. She's gifted. She is done. She's fed up, but it gets worse. It gets so much worse. Performing, you know, I'm getting chewed out here in just about five minutes.
Oh, God. She's so fed up. And look at this guy, he's like, give it all I got.
I think that's I think that again, she was saying she was saying that the woman couldn't do the cue cards and she had to introduce it. I just feel like I feel like we should revisit this video every single year. There's a lesson to be learned there.
The lesson is this. You know, when you are stressed out like this and she's stressed, that's like the worst nightmare for somebody in her position. Yeah, like, oh, my goodness, this is happening. And I'm in front of the president on the White House lawn. This is being broadcasted on live TV. Right.
All the main networks. I mean, this is not a good thing for someone of my caliber. Yes. Be careful in those moments what you say and what you do.
Right. I've been there. I'm not at that level, of course, but I've been there where I've been stretched and stressed and I want something and then it's not happening. It's like, oh, and you just got to swallow and you just have to, you know, pray. So I don't you know, I don't know if she prayed or not.
She probably prayed later. And then on the flip side, those of us, you know, if you're in that position, that capacity where you have to help a person like that, get with it. Don't dilly dally. Don't throw yourself a pity party. Don't be like, I'm doing my best.
Don't do that. You're you are helping that person get in there and help. I can't stand bystander apathy. Yeah, I cannot stand people hesitating as well.
I mean, I talk about that. It's like, don't hesitate. That's right. Click it. That's right. Do it. That's right.
Click it sooner than later. That's right. That's right. And that culture, I will say this.
That culture is very helpful, especially in something like that. We know that we can have the whole worship is not a performance thing. But that's how we get it. We get it.
Conversation is so tired. At the same time, we do everything to the very, very best of our ability because we're doing it unto the Lord. That's right. And that culture, Dr. Shah, that mindset has helped our worship team so much because because nobody is more hesitant than musicians, especially in a church. Yeah, they will be like, now you play now. And so that's oh, that's that's our thing. We talk about it with any new musician.
Any time we do worship workshops is do not ask permission. Start. Start playing. Yeah, because you can work with something that is there. You cannot work with something that's not there. Right. If you come in too early, we'll mute you. We'll don't worry about that.
Yeah, but we can't make you add something that's not there. Yeah, we use that kind of language when we were getting ready for the play A Christmas Carol that we just did because we had a lot of a lot of young actors and a lot of first time actors. So there was some sort of like trepidation. Do I walk on stage now? Is this the right time? Or am I waiting for this person? And I was like, I would rather you as you walk on stage, I would rather you be confidently wrong than be timid and enter, you know, kind of around the right time.
Yeah, just go from there. They're afraid of making a mistake. Yeah. And I get that, you know, afraid of making a mistake, but not coming in or not putting something up is to me the worst mistake. That's right.
Yeah, that's a huge mistake. Now what you're avoiding getting chewed out. So now what?
What are you going to do? Now is now you got a different problem. That's right. Yeah. I don't want to get in trouble. Right. Now you're in big trouble.
That's what it comes from. I don't want to get in trouble. I don't want to do something wrong. Yeah, no, rather do it.
And then we can always fix it. That's right. Shout out to Patti LaBelle. Hope you're having a Merry Christmas somewhere.
I hope you're having a Merry Christmas today. I hope they got your cue cards right for you. We got about ten background singers are there. Yeah, I know. Right.
We got about ten minutes late. We're not getting invited to Patti LaBelle's Christmas. No, 100 percent not.
No, I'm sure. They're off the Christmas card list. It's so funny to be able to watch that video.
Watch them grooving and stuff, knowing I'm about to get in big trouble. That shot, we got about ten minutes left. Any Christmas encouragement you want to leave our listeners with today or anything that you just want to say to people on this nice, cool, crisp winter's Christmas day? Don't forget the reason for the season.
It sounds cliched, but it's not. Don't forget the reason. The reason is the living God has entered into our realm to save us. He has come. Jesus came.
God's son came to give his life for us. That has been accomplished, and now we are waiting for the new creation. Christmas has already begun, but now we're waiting for the new creation, which is going to come one day. So wow, we have so much more to look forward to.
So where am I going with this? I'm going to this point. Don't think that Christmas is Christmas day, and then it's all downhill from there, right? People just get kind of, you know, tomorrow, Boxing Day, right?
We can talk about that tomorrow. They feel just down and out. No, no, no. Don't feel that way. This is a new beginning.
That's right. New beginning. It's not the end. And as we're opening all these gifts and as we're giving these gifts, you know, that's one of the things that as I've matured, I've, I've still got a long way to go, but one of the things that has transformed me, especially since having kids, is I used to get so excited, like I wonder what I'm going to get for Christmas, and you kind of have that. But the more you start to grow up and you start to have kids and develop families, you really enjoy that sense of giving a gift, you know what I mean? And seeing people's, I see people's reception, I guess is the word, like seeing their response. I think about God giving his son and how painful that must have been. And knowing that, you know, while it pleases me to give gifts and it's like, oh man, I can't wait to give this.
I'm going to get such a great feeling out of this. The feeling of God having to send his son down to give the ultimate gift for us was almost anything but. That's what I mean. Well, we tend to judge this familial, not familiar, but familial, this family relationship on our standard. Like, we understand father, son or parent child relationship. Let's see how we can apply this to God. Turn that around. It's because God is the father and he has the son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and the Trinity, this triune Godhead, this family, right? Not three gods, one God in three persons. Because of that, we have meaning and purpose in life, in our relationships.
So turn that around. You know, we try to say, so, you know, as a father, how I would feel like, no, I love my son. I love my children, but I cannot understand what love truly is of a father towards his children until I understand the love that is between the God, the father and God, the son. That's right. I have to turn that analogy around, apply it to myself rather than applying our earthly relationships to God. I hope that makes sense.
It does. It's such a great way to think about it because instead of us trying to, you know, magnify the feelings that we feel and perfect the feelings that we feel, we distill our version of love from the truest example of love, God the father. That's right. And the son was obedient, right? The son was obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. When you put that family language and put it on the Trinity where it's supposed to be, because that's where we're going to derive it from, it takes on such deeper, richer, more impactful meaning. That's a great point. The son did not disobey the father.
He came. So also in our family relationship, our children should obey the parents, not vice versa. That's right.
That's right. And the father loved his son. You know, also like for example, you know, people often talk about how the father turned his face away. You know, he abandoned the son at the cross.
No, there is no broken Trinity. There was no abandonment. This was fulfilling of scripture because now Jesus, he who knew no sin became sin for us. So the father turned his face away because that's where the wrath was poured out. But there was not a, there was not like a separation.
Right. No broken Trinity. No forsaking happening. He didn't forsake his son. I mean, that's like Trinity would break down.
The entire world would implode. That's right. Yeah. And so in our daily relationships, you know, we don't abandon our children. We still love them. You know, we still love them no matter what. So there's so much we can learn from the love that is between the Trinity father and the son and the Holy Spirit. Absolutely.
Absolutely. I think one of the things that I really love about our culture and just about Christmas in general is how, you know, you put Jesus in the center, but all these things that Christmas has become, they're not bad things. You know, it's not bad to enjoy it because people will always say that, especially Christians love to say Christmas, it's so commercialized Santa Claus and reindeer and all this stuff and frosty, you know, that that's not what Christmas is supposed to be about, but it's okay to enjoy what Christmas is okay.
And it was kind of funny. This didn't happen this year, but last year we explained Gavin was old enough to where we explained that Christmas is Jesus's birthday. So that's why Christmas is such a big deal. So we were leaving our cookies and stuff out for Santa. He was like, should we leave cookies out for Jesus?
No, no, not for Jesus, just for Santa. I was like, I don't know if Jesus is going to come eat his cookies. He was like, can I have them? I was like, yeah, buddy, you can. Then there was the bedrock. That was it. I was like, yeah, you can have Jesus's cookies.
That's fine. Then he started, he ate Jesus's cookies and then he was eyeing Santa's cookies. I was like, go get in the bed before you don't get nothing. So, but man, it's so rewarding to be able to see this with your little kids.
And then Dr. Shot, even like your kids, seeing your kids grow up, start their own families and then still come back for this Christmas season where everything began. It's just like, for me, I think I'm just seeing God's blessing every single Christmas.
I'm seeing more and more blessing from God. That's right, man. That's right. I love it.
That's a celebration for sure. Yes. Make sure you join us tomorrow. Same time, same station. We're going to be diving into another great topic here on the Clearview Today Show. Clearview Today show hotline. There it is. And it's going to be very important because we're actually going to pray. And we're not going to mention names. We're not going to mention last names. We may not even mention first names if people prefer that way. This is not to expose, you know, relationship issues and give gory details about, you know, what's happening.
No, none of that. You can let us know that. That part of the conversation will not be online. But we're going to pray. We're going to pray for marriages. We're going to pray for sicknesses. We're going to pray for salvation. I believe that's far, far, far, far, far more important than anything else. Praying for people's salvation.
One hundred percent. You know, that's the way we're praying that some people that we've been praying for for years will get saved in twenty twenty five. That's right. Maybe get saved the same night.
Maybe get saved that year or that month. I don't know. God knows. That's right. That's right. One hundred percent. So we're very much looking forward to that. That's happening in a couple of weeks. So make sure you save that number.
