Dr. Abaddon Shah explains the concept of sanctification and salvation, using the biblical account of Adam and Eve to illustrate the idea that putting on Christ means living in his power and seeking to glorify him. He discusses how the gospel is the same throughout the Bible and how understanding this concept can help transform and renew one's mind and actions.

No, I don't have any tacos. I do have for your viewing pleasure, Dr. Pepper Blackberry. Wow. I do want to let you guys know this episode is not sponsored by Dr. Pepper Blackberry. But it ought to be. Yeah, it ought to be.

I would love for Dr. Pepper to cut us a check. This has been floating around the church for a while. People have been talking about it. I saved it for right now. I don't know if you want to. Let's just pop it right in the mic.

That's a great sound. So I don't know about you, Dr. Shah. Well, actually, I do know about you. There is no soda, right?

Like we're kind of breaking our sobriety. Yeah, I'm not a soda person. All right, let's try it. Okay. Wow. That's very sweet. Yeah. That's like sickeningly sweet.

What do you think? I like it. I mean, I like Dr. Pepper.

It's not my favorite, but I like it. Blackberry is really strong. I like, I like blackberries. It tastes good. It's just like syrup. Yeah. I want to have my wife try it because my wife is like Dr. Pepper fanatic, but only Dr. Pepper. So no vanilla, no cherry, no any of that.

Like her life's blood is just straight up Dr. Pepper. Yeah. Today's check-in is coming to us from Deputy Dan. Again, Deputy Dan. So he actually put in his name, Deputy Dan. He didn't, I guess it's Daniel. I see his name in the email.

Deputy Dan from Dallas, Texas. Okay. That seems right. Yeah. Yeah. Deputy Dan. Maybe meet him in an RB or probably, probably.

Okay. We were in Dallas and if anybody named Deputy Dan was, you know, some people did put some fake names on there. I saw some people walking around with fake names. I didn't see anybody named Deputy Dan, but Deputy Dan from Dallas, Texas says, Hey, Dr. Shaw, just had to check in and say, your wife, your wife did you dirty. You absolutely, you absolutely should have been allowed to play a cowboy in the play. We were ready for spurs and a hat and a dramatic.

This town ain't big enough for the both of us moment. We stand with you. Hashtag let, let Dr. Shaw be a cowboy. Hashtag justice for the sheriff. Not the hashtag. Just kidding. Yeah.

He put hashtag on a text. Love the show. Keep writing strong on the Clearview express. Thank you. Thank you. You did funny.

You got done kind of, kind of wrong. I know. I know.

And guess what? I'm, I'm the one who pushed for a Western show. Yeah. Right.

I started liking Westerns when I was maybe seven or eight years of age. Yeah. Somebody gave me a Bonanza comic book, not a show. I didn't even know a show existed, but a Bonanza comic book and I loved it. It was still like the cart rights and all that.

It was the cart, right? Yeah. So the show was there and then they decided to branch out into the comic books for children. And man, I was, I was reading them and I love the scenery.

I love the interaction. The whole Western theme just got to me and I was not even a teenager. And then I read books like the one, my favorite book, Treachery at Cimarron. Right.

Right. And then I got into Louis L'Amour books and Zane Grey somewhat. I liked him as well.

And so reading all those books and then watching movies, Westerns, I was sold. But Nicole didn't know any of that. Nicole didn't know what you, that you loved Cowboys. Well, she knows. Oh, she knows. Yes.

But she still made you like a Peter Pettigrew of yourself. So I do want to say just since now that fans are kind of getting in on the joke, I should just say I'm completely joking around. Like Ryan and Nicole have done a great job casting the play. There's no actual salt over here. It is. It is stretching me.

Let's just put it that way. That the, the role that I am playing is stretching me. Yeah. And once I have my mustache on, I will become somebody else.

Hugh tree is in the building. Yes. Yes. It's always fun to know which actors to place in roles that you know, they're like, they're going to gel really well. And which actors to push a little bit, a little bit. And you're one of those that we, that we wanted to push a little bit. You definitely did. You you're doing an incredible, I don't know if anybody else could have played that role. Oh my goodness.

Incredible. You're doing a pretty good, you're doing a pretty good, you are doing a good job, but you're doing a great job to directing last night. And I was like, man, this, this thing is running like well oiled machine. It's, I mean, there's a great team of us together, a great cast. I mean, it's, it's a lot of hands. I mean, the work that you guys are doing behind the scenes to bring the soundscapes together and the special effects, it's, I'm really looking forward to it. We could take this show and put it at a deep pack and it would be a sellout. I'm not going to lie. I think we can take it to Carnegie hall if we wanted to.

I mean, I think it's up to that level. All right. We started a new segment last week.

I want to, I want to bring it back. It's called proverb or not verb. So if you listen to it for the first time, I'm going to give these gentlemen five proverbs only here's the thing. Here's the skinny. One of them is going to be fake. Okay. One of them are going to be out the Bible.

One of them is going to be from chat GPT. So I'm going to ask you to, I'm going to ask you guys to, to tell me which one of the fake one here's number one, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways, acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths. Okay. Okay. Number two, a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Okay. Okay. Number three, the diligent sparrow gathers in season, but the lazy crow cause in vain. Number four, the generous soul will be made rich. Can I go ahead and stop you there? Yeah. And the third one, there's no crow in Proverbs.

No way. The Crow, the Crow, what do you mean? The Crow, the Crow's in there. The Crow's in Proverbs. I don't know. Is there a Crow in Proverbs?

That's what I meant. I didn't mean like in the entire Bible, but definitely in the Proverbs, I don't ever remember reading about a Crow. I was going to say there's crows in like the parable of the sower, but not in Proverbs is what I'm saying.

I don't even know if it's worth it. It doesn't say crows came down. It just said birds. Okay. Fair enough. Well, it is the third one. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you can read the other two if you wanted to, but the fourth one was the generous soul being made rich and he who waters will also be watered himself. And then the, the last one I want to read, cause it's so graphic, but it says as a dog returns to his own vomit. So a full repeats, but yeah, one, one, two and five are pretty like pretty well known.

Yes. The fourth one I might've, I might've missed the fourth one, but the third one, the crows was did it for me. Really?

I'd never in a million years would have been like a Crow. Wait a second. We've been to Israel. I've been there four times leading true tours.

You've been there twice. Yes. How many crows have you seen? They are there. Ravens are there, but yeah, crows. Yeah. I guess I haven't seen, no, I guess I haven't seen any crows at all. There you go. Well, maybe I may, maybe I need to have chat GPD vet these a little better as a powerful tool, but sometimes it'll slip up sometimes.

Well that's proverb or not verb. This is a good one. I like this one.

That's fun guys. Don't go anywhere. We're going to take a quick break and be right back with more clear view today. Welcome back to Clear View Today with Dr. Abaddon Shaw, the daily show that engages mind and heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Today's verse of the day is coming to us from Ephesians 4 22. It says that you put off concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt, according to the deceitful lusts. That means when we are saved, we become a new creation. And I've always loved that. I think for me, like when I got saved, that really helped me to dive in deeper and earlier. You know what I mean?

Like I'm not now myself trying to do better. Jesus has made me someone completely new. But keep in mind that put on is a command, which means this is not just about salvation. This is about sanctification.

Sanctification is definitely a command. Salvation, when you receive Christ as your savior, at that moment, you are born again. You are a new person in Christ. All things are passed away.

Behold, all things have become new. But putting on Christ is a daily responsibility. You choose. You choose to walk in Christ, not just imitate Christ. Imitation is not the Christian life. Now there is a place for imitation where Paul says follow me as I follow Christ. We are to follow Christ.

Be like him. But Christian life is not just pretending, play acting. It's about living in the knowledge that it's not me who is living this Christian life. It's Christ in me. The power that I have to reject sin and choose God, the power that I have to turn away from sin and to choose righteousness, the power that I have to discern between right and wrong, good and evil is coming from God.

And I lean on that. I seek him to help me. So there are times I cannot love somebody. There are times that my emotions may lead me astray. There are times that my senses, like I said today, don't listen to your heart.

We've been talking about that a lot on this show. Don't listen to your heart because people say, oh, I just listened to my heart. There's even a song, you know, listen to your heart. Follow your heart.

You can never go wrong. It'll never lead you astray. My heart leads me astray.

The heart is wicked. So you have to lean upon his heart, the heart of Christ or the mind of Christ. So anyways, the whole point is to say put on Christ means you're not digging into your own resources. You are looking to Christ to supply righteousness to you, to live in his power, to seek to glorify him.

That's right. And you've given me, I think one of the best word pictures I have ever heard of what it looks like to take off this old self and put on the new self. It's like if you're trying to, you've been tailored this brand new jacket, this brand new spanking new, like nice, shiny, it fits like a glove.

It's a perfect fit for you. But you keep trying to put on this old tattered jacket that's like three sizes too small and has holes in the elbows and it's like moth-eaten and threadbare and it's just uncomfortable. But you keep trying to squeeze into that jacket.

That's the old man. You're supposed to take that off and put on the new one that fits you because that's the new you that God has created. The problem is we like the old, right? Because we're comfortable in it. Just like when you get home, we don't like to get a brand new crisp t-shirt. We like to get the soft one that we just pulled out.

That's the worn in, worn and just holes in it. Yeah. It just fits better. It's more comfortable.

Oh yeah. I like my new t-shirt, but I'm going to wear it outside somewhere. Isn't it funny how like those old, like no, those are the ones that I get angry when they get thrown out. You know what I mean? Like them old undershirts that your wife ever throws.

Oh yeah, she does. So that's also applicable in the Christian life, but in a very negative sense because we like the old ways. So if you hurt me, I'm going to hurt you. Or if you hurt me, I'm going to now hold a grudge against you.

Or I'm going to now wish bad upon you. That is very comfortable to do because in my mind and my heart, there's a sense of justice there. There is a sense of self-preservation there. So that is like the comfortable t-shirt, but the comfortable t-shirt, unlike our daily lives is not good when it comes to the Christian life because the comfortable t-shirt is sin. The comfortable t-shirt is a life that only leads to death. The comfortable t-shirt is what glorifies me rather than glorifies Christ. So I have to choose to put on the Christ shirt. And putting on that Christ shirt, like putting on that new man, it's really the ultimate act of faith, right? And one of the things that I would add to that obedience because faith and obedience, it almost blend them together. And that's, I think, a submission.

Yeah, I agree 100%. And I think one of the things that we've been really big about here at Clearview these past, I would say these past few years, and I know it's been, it's big on your heart for a while, but I think there's been a huge focus on it these past couple of years is that people in the Old Testament knew this, they understood this. Do we think that, and I think even prior to maybe these past couple of years, even I thought that people in the Old Testament, they became right by God, or they showed God that they were submitting to him by just following the law. And then later on, when Christ came, now, okay, now I put on Christ. But even they understood, like, I have to put on a new person.

I have to put on and embrace what he's eventually coming to do. Salvation is one and the same. Old Testament, New Testament. Adam and Eve, if you were to bring them back today, and sit them right here and say, so tell me, what does it mean to be saved? They wouldn't be like, what do you mean? I don't get it. What do you mean?

No, they would have a, I mean, they will immediately recognize what you're talking about, and they will start talking about it in a way that you can understand it. What does it mean? Oh, yeah.

You know what? We used to walk with God, and then we sinned. We chose to sin. We chose to listen to the enemy, and sin came in, and immediately there was a separation from God. We could sense death come into our lives, death come into the creation. We could tell that we are now sinners under the wrath of a holy and a righteous God. The fellowship was broken, and we knew the repercussions are going to be coming down for generations and generations and generations to come.

We felt it. I believe if anything, they probably could tell you how terrible sin is, and the damage of sin. Yeah, especially the way they experienced it, going from perfection to...

I often think about that. What would Adam and Eve say about how it felt when the effects of sin took hold? Because they witnessed, I mean, they went through that.

They are the only ones who experienced a perfect world transitioning into a sin. Imagine how traumatic that was. Even my sin, where I'm like, oh man, I really messed up. But at the end of the day, I'll be okay.

It'll be all right. God's going to... But they're just like, this is the end of the world.

This is the end of existence. We've never known a world without sin. If I can make a little correction, it was not a perfect world. It was a good world. So why do I emphasize that? Because when we think of a perfect world, we almost think of a plastic world.

Everything is just colors are just a certain, you know, like a Lego picture, a picture of a Lego just perfectly laid out. It wasn't like that. There was no death there.

There were no leaves eaten a bit with bugs and worms. There were no limbs falling apart. It was beautiful.

It was good. Not perfect in the sense of just geometrically perfect. Yeah, that's a good point.

So, and again, I know y'all understand that is for the benefit of our listeners and viewers what we're talking about. But the separation from God, the coming of sin into this world disrupted all that goodness, not perfection, goodness. And now what was good was no longer good. The sun, wow, look at that beautiful sunrise. Now it was like, oh, it's hot.

Right? Previously was, man, it's so good to walk with God in the cool of the day, but now it's like, oh, it's kind of muggy and sticky. Good point because creation itself, I mean, I guess you could say in a way creation fell, but it's not like the sun now suddenly became 10 times hotter. We're the ones that change, not the world.

That's right. I understand. And then when sin came, of course, breakdown relationship between Adam and Eve, they began to blame each other. This woman you gave to me and she's blaming the serpent means it's never my fault. It's somebody else's fault. You made me this way. If you didn't do that, I wouldn't be like this.

Now, now all that garbage has come in into the world. So, but if you were to sit down and talk with them and say, so what does it mean to be saved? They wouldn't have to go, you know, we were in a different world. We don't understand.

They would very quickly tell you. So here's how it happened. When we sinned, we realized that we were now naked and shame came in. There was no longer two shall become one flesh. Now she was Eve.

I was Adam or vice versa. And there was a sense of distance between us, of course with God, but also with, with, with us. And then God came and then he pronounced his judgment over a serpent. He was cursed, but we were not cursed because God never cursed Adam and Eve. He cursed the serpent Satan, but Adam and Eve, it was more of a judgment pronounced, but in the judgment, there was also a promise of a coming one, right? Seed of the woman, the man of promise, the coming one. We know him as Jesus born of a virgin. So they will say, we were given a promise that someone is coming and he's going to destroy the works of the enemy and he is going to pay for our sins. He will have to die. It was not just going to be a, no, he's going to somehow pray for us or he's going to somehow like a conquering hero sort of thing.

No, he's going to die. And how do you know that Adam and Eve? How do you know that? Because God took a lamb or a ram or whatever, and he sacrificed it. And then he took the skin and made clothing for us. So we were now symbolically clothed in the coming one who will one day come. You see how interesting it is that the verse we just read would be very, very easily understood by Adam and Eve. I mean, they'd be like, we get it.

We know exactly what happened with us. We were clothed in the new, in the newness, in the newness, which was the lamb skin or ram or goat or whatever they were clothed in. So even from the very beginning, it was understood that salvation is going to come by faith in this coming one, the one who is coming and having faith in him and acting accordingly. That's how salvation comes in. And when you don't act accordingly is when you try to cover your sin with something else. Isn't that what Adam and Eve did?

Yeah, leaves first. I mean, they tried to sew together fig leaves and that was not an acceptable offering. It wasn't sufficient. And that was why, because nothing had to die. There has to be bloodshed. There has to be a sacrifice. Now, how do you think that happens with us today? Oh, I mean, any number of ways we try to cover our sin, like at least I'm not as bad as that person or try to try to spin it and justify, yeah, I know that I did this and this was bad, but really I did it because X, Y, and Z. Or you could leverage your other resources like, hey, I know my life ain't perfect, but look without me, you know, I'm giving a lot of money to this church or I'm doing a lot for this organization or this town wouldn't survive without me.

So let's, let's just all, let's just all calm down here. Philanthropic efforts. Yeah. Yeah. Philanthropic. Yeah. Oh, like philanthropy.

I was like, what is philanthropic? Okay. I even made me doubt myself. No, no, no. You're right. No, you're right. You're right. He didn't say Philharmonic. I was like Phil philanthropic.

I got you. Like philanthropy. Good deeds. I mean, that's, that's what, and they would easily sit and talk with us about that and say, yeah, we do that. And isn't that true? And they would probably go on and say, isn't that true that human beings, our descendants have been doing that ever since trying to cover themselves in their own good works, sowing fig leaves. Now, how long will fig leaves last? Right. I mean, if you ever eaten figs and seen the leaves, they're not the most durable leaves. Well, even, even any kind of leaf, if you pluck it from the tree and make a garment out of it, it's going to crumble and die. Yeah.

I don't know if anybody's ever tried that, but like leaves aren't closed. Yeah. But think about it. Adam and Eve, I would say they were brilliant people. They haven't been tainted by sin.

They haven't been corrupted by our fallenness. So how intelligent do you think they were? Probably, probably extremely intelligent.

I mean, Einstein would be nothing compared to Adam and Eve. Would you agree with that? Yeah. Leaves? Yeah. They took leaves and they sowed them. Had to put them on. How do you think I look? I don't know.

And they tried to come before God be like, Hey, it's all, it's all good. He's like, why are you wearing leaves? That's all good, dude. It's all good.

They're comfortable. And the green? Yeah. Pay no attention to that rash.

It's fine. Rash. Oh dude. Yeah. Now there's rash because there's sin in the world. The very plants are rebelling you.

They don't want to be clothed. No, no. So I mean, what we're saying all together here is the gospel is the same. And once you really understand that the whole idea of being clothed in his righteousness, Adam and Eve would be perfectly at home in explaining that to us. Right. Right. If Adam was here, I would say, man, please, can you preach for us? Yeah. Yeah. And can you reuse this passage?

Can you imagine that message? I also love just the, how, like how much credit goes to God at the end of the day, like when they gave their faith to God, like I know all of these stories, like even, even beyond Adam and Eve, like Abraham and Moses and David and all these people who placed their faith in God, I never come away from that story and be like, man, that's a hero. It's always that faith, their faith is giving all credit to God. God is so good.

Exactly. Like I can't think, I mean, like, don't get me wrong. I admire Moses and I admire David and all those heroes of faith.

But at the end of the day, I don't think I've ever been like, only I could be like that. Like, it's always look what God did through that person. Yeah. If we can take that since you brought up David, we could have gone with Abraham as well, but let's go with David for a moment. Clothed in his righteousness. Can you read that verse for us again? The one that you just read as our opening verse? Oh yeah. Just, just, just to bring up the, that verse so we can once again establish that salvation has always been the same from Genesis till the end of time. Right?

Yeah. Ephesians 4 22. It says that you put off concerning your former conduct, the old man, which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.

Putting on clothes. Now think about David. David, when he was going to fight Goliath and, and time came for the armor and Saul was there.

Saul had his armor. He tried to put it on David. And that happened. It didn't fit. It didn't fit him. He fell off. Yeah. He's like, I can walk with this.

There's no way I can fight. Cause I mean, there was a discrepancy in size. And so the, again, putting on is that theme is there as well. Right. Now, of course it seems like, ah, you're reading so much into that's I said, Jesus. No, it's not. It's theological. Right. And so David had to say, no, I'm going to go the way I know is right because David knew Christ.

Albeit. He didn't understand all the little details that we do now. Thank God for Christ coming and doing what he did. And then thank God for Romans and Hebrews and all that is written in the new Testament that helps us understand who Christ really was.

But David understood. That's why he said, no, I'm good. I fought a lion.

I fought a bear and I didn't need all that. So this, we only got like maybe five minutes left in the show and maybe this is a conversation for another day, but do you think, would people actually say that size to Jesus? The reason I ask is because I don't know, and maybe you can, you can help me understand this. I don't know that there's any like insignificant details in even in narrative.

You know what I mean? I agree. Because like, it doesn't tell us what David had for breakfast that morning.

It doesn't tell us what time it woke up, but it does tell us that he put the armor on. So the author thought it was significant. Absolutely. Absolutely. Let's, let's step away from that and let's go to the night Jesus was crucified.

Okay. Friday was a, was a tough day for Jesus. Can you imagine, you know, being tried and tested and mocked and beaten and flogged and then the verdict, you are guilty, right? Even though he's not guilty. The Bible says then he was taken out. He was let out to be crucified.

Seems like just a regular statement. They took him out. I mean, of course, why? They're not going to crucify him in the Praetorium. I mean, how is that possible? And by the way, the Romans always crucified people outside where people could see him.

That's why he, they took him out. The writer of Hebrews, I believe it was Paul, but it doesn't matter. And Hebrews chapter 13 tells us that this was very symbolic and it was fulfilling Leviticus in Numbers where that person who was guilty was taken out and stoned. So once you read that, you go, wait, the writer of Hebrews tells us that this, this taking out was not just incidental.

It was very intentional, right? These narrative details are serving a purpose to call back characteristics and attributes of God that we've read before. Exactly. The scripture itself says that it's significant.

You can't dispute that. Right. So we're applying the same principle here with the clothing with Adam and Eve's wearing fig leaves versus wearing animal skin. We're using the same principle that the writer of Hebrews or Paul uses in Hebrews 13 about Jesus being taken outside the camp and crucified because that's what they had to do with the person who was under condemnation.

They had to take him outside and then put him to death. Right. If someone's listening to this and they're saying, you know, I get the narrative symbolism, I get all that and it's kind of neat, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do with all this. Like what do I, what do I, I'm already saved.

I've already put on this new man. What, what does this mean for me? Yeah, right, right. What would you say? I would say, you know, the more you understand as a Christian, we're talking about a Christian, correct? The more you understand this, the more it helps to transform and renew your mind, your understanding, which impacts your actions. The deeper you go into understanding, putting on, putting off, or he was let out, so he suffered for us so we could come in. He went out so we could come in. He was cursed so we could be cleansed.

All these things help us live differently. That's right. Not just with that thought, but with that power. Good point. Good point.

Yeah. So impactful for us. Guys, make sure you join us tomorrow. Same time, same station. We're going to be diving into another great topic here on the Clear V Today show. If you're a local, if you're in the area and you'd like to come see it, we've got two showings, May the 3rd and 4th, both at 7 p.m. And there's another showing on Monday morning, May the 5th at 10 a.m. Tickets are $5 a piece. If you'd like to pick some up, write in and let us know, 252-582-5028. We love you guys. We'll see you tomorrow on Clearview Tonight.
