A mural, Mo Ranka explains, that's sure to get people talking. For the first time in 75 years, America's parish church has a major new piece of art. one that will strike many as particularly timely. Being in the art world, I know a lot of lapsed Catholics, and they're all like, oh my god, they're doing it right. A new look for New York's St.

It's Sunday morning, September 21st, 2025, and we'll be back after this. A provocative work of art is being unveiled this morning at New York's famed St. Patrick's Cathedral. We've asked Mo Raka to take a closer look. How do you improve on a sacred space?
That was artist Adam Zvianovich's assignment when he was approached early last year. a mural for Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The Catholic Church hasn't done a significant Piece of art like this in a long, long time. But in fact, right over the long view of centuries, you're part of a great tradition. Oh, I know.
Right? Yes. And that made it all the more daunting. Two? While drawing inspiration from the old world masters, Zvianovich, who works primarily on a large scale, wanted to create something distinctly American.
The top layer is angels and random. Yeah, celestial. And the. Layer below are People. The mural called What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding Now graces the entrance to what many call America's parish church.
Even those who love the cathedral said, eh, this entranceway is kind of dreary. It's kind of dull. And technically, it's called the narthex. Yes, the narthex. There's enough dreariness in the world that when you go into a church, you don't need it.
Let there be lights. Cardinal Timothy Dolan is the Catholic Archbishop of New York. Hallelujah. Let there be life. Let there be hope.
Dolan initially conceived of the mural as a depiction of an incident that took place in the Irish village of Knock. The city is a very good idea. Dozens of villagers reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary.
Now known to Catholics as the Apparition at Nock, it is the It happened the very same year St. Patrick's opened in New York to serve a largely Irish immigrant congregation. But the Cardinal's idea became something more once Zvianovich was chosen to paint it. He said, what would you think of making it a celebration? of the continual pilgrimage of God's people.
Yeah, the Lamb of God, Mary, Joseph, and John. kind of were immigrants from heaven to visit the little village of Nok. Literally, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were refugees as they had to flee to Egypt.
So what would you think of an ode to the immigrants which has always been such a tantalizing part. of New York. and the American Dream. I said, bingo, show me what you got. The mural depicts the apparition at Knock and significant figures from the church's history in America.
including Mother Frances Cabrini, the first American citizen to be canonized. There's a stirring scene of nineteenth century immigrants disembarking in New York. and another of first responders, many of them descended from those immigrants. But what may be most talked about are the portraits of present-day arrivals. waiting to be welcomed.
Were you worried that you were stepping into a little bit of a hornet's nest? I didn't think about it.
Now, subsequently, people have said, you know, they're going to look at this as a political statement. And I said, well, It kind of wasn't intended to be a plan. political statement. But if that's the way they interpret it. Fine with me.
Let us pray. Dolan delivered the invocation at President Trump's inaugurations in 2017 and 2025. God. Bless America. But he's also criticized the administration's approach to immigration.
My Irish gets up. When I hear these blanket attacks on immigrants, threats of massive departations, breaching of houses of worship. This isn't good for our country, folks. I can't understand why we would want to deport people who are not a threat to us. who we really kind of have gotten to know as neighbors and really kind of need.
So I I I you'd think there could be some via media, to use the Latin word, a middle ground there. Does it pain you? Oh, it does, yeah, it does. And even my own people, you know, even Catholic people. Uh I I will not tell you the parish, but there's a parish with an Italian background.
and Catholic charities wanted to use their unused school. for immigrant children. And they said no. Not in our neighborhood. And when I went up there and I said, you realize that's what they said to your grandparents and great-grandparents.
You are not welcome here. We don't want your kind here. And I said, you know, if somebody wanted to rent this out to Planned Parenthood, you would expect me to say, absolutely not.
Someone wants to rent it out to better the immigrant, I'd like to think you would say, Oh, bravo, we need to get behind this things. simmered down a bit, but it really irritated me. It's hard to Um Eskew politics here, but there's been a shift in America recently and um. One of the most important things that's happened in this last tumultuous decade is that there's been a permission to be cruel. This is not about saying, well, there should be like open borders, or there should be these quotas.
The church isn't saying anything like that. The church is just saying. People are people true. treat them with respect. St.
Patrick's completed a three-year, $177 million restoration in 2015. But the new mural marks the first major addition to the cathedral in 75 years. St. Patrick's is one of the most visited landmarks in New York. welcoming more than five million people a year, nearly as many as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is one reason why artist Adam Svianovich hopes his mural will speak to more than just the faithful.
It is filled with as accurately as I could Do it. Catholic imagery, very specific to this church. And that is for people who are devout. But it's also a painting for the city of New York. And it's a painting for everybody in the city.
And the thing that's been really amazing to me is that friends of mine who were. devout atheists. friends of mine who are Jewish, friends of mine who are Muslim. are all like, this is great. I wanted the entrance to the cathedral to be sparkling, to be dazzling.
It was so dull, it was so dark, it was so drab. And now, look, it's just popping. It's snap, crackle, and pop here. For the 75-year-old Timothy Cardinal Dolan. The mural is sure to be part of his legacy.
but not, he says, the most important. When all is said and done, when I stand before Jesus, he's not going to say, hey, Dolan, good work with the mural, good work with the restoration and repair of the cathedral. But I need to ask you something. When I was an immigrant, did you welcome me? And if I said, I'm afraid I didn't, Lord, he's going to say, well, Get the hell out of here.

This is Bill Whitaker. In 1892, a mixed-race shoemaker from New Orleans named Homer Plessy was arrested for riding in a whites-only rail car. Four years later, in Plessy v. Ferguson, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his arrest and made separate but equal the law of the land.
But in reality, nothing was equal. Black Americans were routinely denied access to housing and jobs, and in many parts of the country, they were also denied the right to vote. and subjected to racial violence. But in 1909, a group of black and white reformers came together in New York City to fight back. establishing the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Among its founders were Ida B.
Wells, the pioneering journalist who exposed the horrors of lynching. and W. E. B. Du Bois, the Harvard trained scholar who gave the movement its voice through The Crisis magazine.
The organization would soon find its most powerful tool for change. the courts. In 1940, a brilliant young attorney named Thurgood Marshall started the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund and began chipping away at segregation in America case by case. In December 1953, Marshall stood before the U.S. Supreme Court and argued that segregation in America was an attempt to keep the formerly enslaved in as near that stage as is possible, and that now was the time to end it.
Five months later, the court unanimously ruled in his favor. We are confident that desegregation will proceed To open the door to true democracy for all of the children of our nation. In Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, the Supreme Court ruled the separate but equal doctrine in place for nearly 60 years was unconstitutional. While the landmark ruling didn't end segregation overnight, both housing and schools remained deeply segregated by race.
It did push the United States much closer to its founding ideals. and that young lawyer who devised the legal strategy to dismantle segregation? In 1967, Thurgood Marshall became the first African-American to sit on the United States Supreme Court.
Alright, well, before this whole thing goes down, you should know one thing about me. What's that? I don't like bullies. As nicknames go, The Rock is about as good as it gets. helped Dwayne Johnson become a superstar pro wrestler and a blockbuster Hollywood actor.

100%. But I was really nervous. And on day one. I remember Benny coming to me and Emily as well said, Are you scared? I went, Yes.
You flat out said yes, I'm scared. Absolutely. I am. And that's saying something, because Dwayne Johnson doesn't scare easily. His father was a professional wrestler, and with Dad on the road a lot of the time, young Duane grew up with his share of trauma.
When he was 15, Duane and his mom were evicted from their apartment because they couldn't pay the rent. He moved around a lot. The ring used to be right here. There was probably 75 to 100 people. And eventually started wrestling on local TV in Memphis, which he showed us in 2022.
So many heads were run into this. No, it hasn't changed at all. We also saw where he stayed back then, a dilapidated trailer in nearby Mississippi. I got goosebumps! The rock is here!
The trailer park kid fought his way out of poverty. became the wrestling legend known as The Rock. and eventually moved into movies. From action. Welcome to animation.
Don't waste all this energy, cause you got the remedy, and I know your legacy. For the smashing machine, he had to find a way to transform into someone whose whole world was coming apart, like the scene where Mark Kerr loses his first fight. To conjure up the feelings of despair on camera, Dwayne Johnson knew right where to go. I went back to what it's like being a 15-year-old kid and coming home. and being evicted.
You said it felt like you were ripping yourself open. What do you think that did for you, Dwayne Johnson, ripping yourself open like that? But the thing that I was running from, which was ripping myself open, is actually the thing that I needed the most. because it made me realize that the thing I love, which is acting, and telling these stories Now I see it in a different world. and in the smashing machine he makes it work.
So, what happened? I'm so sorry. It's me, you don't have to apologize, okay? When I look out on this view, I can't help but think of that trailer that we visited, where you came from. And then you look at this.
even more reason to be grateful.

It was a truly Vegas affair at the Aladdin Hotel. Elvis in a Paisley Tucks, Priscilla with a rhinestone tiara. Why did the pelvis desert bachelorhood? said he, it's about time. Worn through a piece.
in the county. Jail. Prison band was there, they began to wait. By the time they met, when Priscilla was just fourteen. Elvis had already gyrated his way into pop culture.
From his music to his movies. You're wet if you're out of here in about three seconds. I'm gonna put you over my knee. But I'm only wearing it. That's good, because you're gonna feel it.
He redefined what celebrity was. And yet Hollywood was no place for him. He'd always go back to Memphis. Really? Yeah, that's where home was.
He didn't really like LA? Not really. No. Priscilla Presley, now 80. met Elvis when he was in the army, stationed in Germany.
The only thing that made more news than their relationship was their divorce in nineteen seventy three. I mean, I was very much in love with us very much But I still are. I am still very much in love with him. I didn't leave him 'cause I didn't love him. I just couldn't leave Live the life.
Her split from Elvis is where she begins softly as I leave you. what she says is her final telling of what it was like to be a queen to the king. and what came after. I was living Elvis' life, it was all about him. I had to find me.
Who was I? I was, you know, I was Elvis' wife. I don't think we could ever have a life. that I wanted. I wanted him for myself.
But so did his fans. Elvis, it seemed, was destined to be shaved. The lady loves me. But she doesn't know it yet. I thought, well what if he runs into someone he falls in love with?
And I mentioned it to him, and he goes, you don't have to worry, you never have to worry. But when you see these beautiful girls hanging out, I'm going, could that be the one? I'm just a red-blooded boy and I can't stop thinking about it. and sailboats. Water skiing.
I couldn't live a life of being and panic all the time of losing him. To someone else. Mm. That's what you're most afraid of. Mm-hmm.
Yeah. Yeah, they were around all the time. There were affairs on both sides, and yet after their divorce they still couldn't quite quit each other. The The two of you really stayed. uncommonly Close, really.
She never remarried, you never remarried. What are we to make of that? We couldn't find anyone else.
Well, the bar is pretty high for both sides. She started businesses and began taking acting classes, she says it. helped with her shyness and grew her confidence. She was also busy raising her and Elvis's only daughter. Lisa Marie.
They had joint custody for nearly four years. Before it all ended. This is a CBS News Special Report. At 42. Elvis was gone.
Elvis Presley was buried today amid scenes that reflected the birth of his gaudy career 21 years ago. Priscilla had seen the changes, the bloating, the slurred words, the drugs. Was there anybody around him who could convince him? To stop. Elvis on anything unless he could that he believed in it or You know, thought about it and things like that.
Oh yeah. You talk about how the doctors would basically give him anything. Anything.
So they were really enabling it, right? Very much. He was Elvis. You're not going to say no to Elvis. In his absence sat Graceland, the Memphis mansion that had been haemorrhaging money, The urge was to sell.
And I looked at the guy who was telling me, the attorney, and I said, That will never happen. I'm happy you can join us now. as we make our own private tour of Graceland. Instead, she opened it to the public. It went from a home to a family shrine.
It's like a dream. I can't even really tell you what I've seen in there. By the time Lisa Marie turned 25, Elvis' inheritance was hers. It was 1993. The same year, another king popped the question.
The king of pop. Michael Jackson. We were walking on the beach and she said, Mom, you know, Michael wants to get married. Nice Santa Luisa. I'm not really for it.
And she goes, Why not? I go, who are you? Michael Jackson Lisa Presley. and I knew that Michael loved attention. Yeah.
But she did. I knew that's the reason why they didn't even know each other that long. Norberg! How you buddy? She was no fan of another celebrity, O.J.
Simpson. She worked with him on the Naked Gun series. He could be very, very nice, but I just didn't, I just felt something about him. in the way he was with his wife and it didn't set well with me. That said, she was a huge fan of co-star Leslie Nielsen.
She was giving me a look I could feel in my hip pocket. This was starting to get interesting. She'd never done comedy before. She was thought in most circles as a more serious actor. after this role a few years before.
You're persistent, aren't you? If I have to be. All right. You have a date to the Eilbrands ball. Dallas was a spotlight the size of Texas, and Priscilla's role as Jenna Wade.
Put her in the Pop Zeitgeist all over again. It's time. We should be getting married. Yes. Yeah.
She left the series after having her second child. Navarone. with her long time partner Marco Garibaldi. In 2023, Her last physical link with Elvis. Left.
Lisa Marie. She died suddenly at her home in California from complications after bariatric surgery. And once again, The Presley name was draped in grief. I miss her every day. I miss her.
But I have to you know, let that go. and live my life But her spirit is still with me very, very much. She's buried at Graceland. like her dad. Priscilla will be there one day too, she says.
For her the first home she had as a married woman. We'll be here last. That's not looking backward, she says. It's a comfort. for the future.
When you stop and think about it, we don't we're not here that long. We're not, all of a sudden we're older and we think, wow, I don't want to hold on to bad things. I don't want to hold on to, you know, things that are in the past that happened. I want to move forward. After another week of turmoil and tension in America.
New York Times writer-at-large Jim Rutenberg has this analysis on the suspension of late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. President Trump got thunderous applause during his second inaugural address when he vowed to immediately stop all government censorship and bring free speech back to America. After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America. It was part of the free speech refrain of his long march out of the political wilderness and his broadsides against cancel culture. Yet now he is conducting the most punishing crackdown against American media institutions in modern times.
using what seems like every tool at his disposal to silence reporting and commentary that he disagrees with. ABC's decision on Wednesday to indefinitely suspend Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show for comments he made about Charlie Kirk's assassin. show Trump's strategy so far. He had very bad ratings and they should have fired him a long time ago.
So, you know, you can call that free speech or not. He was fired for lack of talent. Far from deploring the silencing of a comedian, the President celebrated Kimmel's suspension. calling it great news for America. Trump had already used his leverage to win multi-million dollar settlements from CBS and ABC in suits that, according to legal experts, faced long odds in court.
When the president sued my own company this past week, the New York Times, his lawyers pointed to the settlements from CBS and ABC as a vindication that his suits were high-profile. highly meritorious. All they do is hit jump. They're licensed. They're not allowed to do that.
They're an arm of the Democrat Party. It's not every day you get to release a new song live on stage. Doja Cat is hardly new to the music scene. You looking like tastes good but I just had to redirect my cooking. and was one of Time Magazine's most influential people. As for that name?
So I mean I think about that name and the name has meaning itself. Does it not? Yes, it does. No, wait, no, it doesn't kind of. She's not too afraid to admit how she coined it.
It doesn't anymore. It did before because I smoked a lot of weed when I was growing up and I just thought the word dojo sounded like a girl's name and I was looking for an alias and that was just what I fell on and I like love cats.

Okay. This week, she releases her new album. Where she's once again mixing up her look and her sound. But if there was one that you would say best reflects your music. What would it be?
I really think I think pop. I think I'm a rapper that makes pop music. You look lovely, by the way. Thank you. Yes, but I guess this is in his surf attire.
No, this is not my surf attire. I didn't do I would bring a zebra print blanket to the beach. The twenty-nine-year-old grew up here near Zuma Beach, California, with her mother and brother. I love the ocean. I think it's like a meditative.
thing for me. Back then her name was Amela Zlamini. At eight, her mother moved the family to a spiritual community called an ashram. What was that experience like? It was interesting.
For me, it was like kind of tough. Because it was a lot more you were restricted in in some ways. Um, but it was peaceful. You couldn't wear certain types of clothes, you know. Cursing can't do that.
The ashram was run by musician Alice Coltrane, the widow of legendary jazz performer John Coltrane. Was that where you got your introduction to music? Yeah, kind of. I mean, yeah, in a in a larger sense, I think, because my mom would design banners for um the John Coltrane festival. And so I was in and out of these festivals.
In her childhood bedroom she started to create her own music. I tried to make my own beats and like it was fine, it was fun for a while, but then I remember just posting my stuff and people liked it and I I Couldn't believe that. Yeah. One of her early videos, Moo, went viral. Get out my hay.
Get out my hay. Get out of my hair. I ain't gonna get it. What's so funny about it is that's when people, or at least executives, started taking you. Very seriously.
Yeah. The irony.
Social media has been her ticket. Her in-the-moment self-expression has built a following. My makeup artist just texted me, Are you shaving your brows off? I'm driving the f Over. Including an episode where she shaved her eyebrows live on Instagram.
You thoroughly engage with your audience, especially the criticism, even to this day. Why is there that need? Because I think that any time that a person would approach you in person, in Day-to-day life and say something to you. You can choose to be like, ah, crazy person, I'm scared, and choose flight over fight. But there's also times where I want to turn what I'm saying into a meaningful discussion.
And I just enjoy a good debate. Um, but I also like to troll. That's like something yeah, I love it. That's like my favorite thing to do. Quick to troll others, she doesn't cut herself a break either.
I'm very proud of the music I'm making now. I'm very excited because it's things that I wasn't able to do before. Like I couldn't. I couldn't hit certain riffs or runs. things like that.
I used to joke about that. I used to like Literally go, eh. And like pretend to be like A singer-singer. And then I just kind of sucked it up and stopped joking so much. and took myself more seriously.
Enjoying her success, Doja Cat is also learning how to maintain it. I'm protecting myself. in a different way. It used to be I was doing things that weren't actually protective, you know, alcohol and things like that. I think that they're a short-lived way of dealing with either anxiety Or You know.
pain and things like that, and so I just learned to steer myself. Steering herself beyond the limits of everyone else's expectations. A person is not boiled down to one single aesthetic and one thing. I think that we're way too complex. Human beings.
as a whole. Just are?
Well, who are you? I'm a singer. A writer, a rapper, an artist, a creator. Uh world builder. And uh An okay businesswoman.
On the eve of this Jewish New Year, we have thoughts from Angela Buchdahl, Senior Rabbi at Central Synagogue in New York. Her new book, Heart of a Stranger, is about her journey to become the first Asian American to be ordained as a rabbi. At Rosh Hashanah, we count the years since God created the world, this year being the year 5786. Give or take a few billion years. While this is a season of joy and community gathering, the New Year also begins a season of atonement where we take an accounting of who we are.
and how we can do better. We believe that with repentance, people and societies can change. This idea of taking stock as we approach a new year may sound familiar. Many Americans make New Year's resolutions on January 1st. resolving to learn a new skill, lose fifteen pounds, or call their mother more often.
This examination happens on Rosh Hashanah tube, but magnified. Jews come together and reflect for hours in synagogue, literally beating our chests as we read through a scripted litany of ways we have fallen short. For spreading lies or hateful speech. for acting callously towards others, for selfishness and greed. The list goes on.
But importantly, We don't confess individually. We do it communally. We take responsibility for one another. and hold each other accountable.
Sounds like it could be an unpleasant way to celebrate a new year, but it's a fundamentally hopeful message. There is joy in knowing we can change. This repentance in Hebrew is called teshuvah, which literally means return. What are we returning to? to our better selves, to who we know we can be as human beings and as a society.
Now imagine if we as a country could make Teshuva together. Not pointing fingers to the other side saying, you're the problem. but collectively. We have ignored the vulnerable. We have normalized mass violence.
We have celebrated the death of opponents. We've rewarded outrage over understanding. We have forgotten how to grieve and how to hope together. On the cusp of this New Year, I know we can return. to the best in ourselves, to the best in our country, to the goodness, compassion, and generosity that this nation has shown me, as an immigrant Korean female rabbi.
