Vice President Harris, as you know, once supported a ban on fracking when she was running for president in 2020. She even sued the Obama administration to prevent fracking off California's coast. Now she says she will not ban the practice as president.
Why should voters trust that that is really what the vice president believes? So strange why we just keep talking about fracking. Now back in 2020, I said that that might be an issue, but it's not going to be a defining issue. And now in 2024, we're still trying to talk about fracking. And now the other side, they're talking about eating cats and geese and dogs and saying absurd things. So of course we're talking about fracking.
It's a real issue, but we can't talk about any real issues because as soon as Trump says something a little unorthodox, that becomes a theme the Sunday shows pick up on it. That was a legitimate question for a change and he wants an illegitimate question. Evan Barker joins us now. Evan is a huge backer of the DNC. She changed her mind, especially after she saw what she saw. But I thought it was so interesting is that Fetterman is somebody who's kind of blunt.
Did you have him on? And he would want to talk about that. But all we want is an explanation why you changed your mind. And if she ever gave interviews or there was a follow-up question, for example, Senator Murphy, I'm looking for this.
This is how hard I'm looking for this. Senator Murphy was on six weeks ago on with Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday. And they said, well, we can't ask Harris why she changed her position, for example, on fracking. Yes, she's changed.
Why? He goes, well, they're better at it. They're better at fracking? I did not know that. Well, that will be interesting. What are they doing different?
How are they getting the shell out quicker? Now, if your answer was I met with some people in Oklahoma and they were concerned about the earthquakes that were happening when there was a lot of fracking, that was a legitimate concern when we went out to Tulsa and Oklahoma City, various book tours of visits or cation visiting KRMG. They said to me, yeah, we know everyone's happy to fracking that with the revenue. But there is some there's issues with some earthquakes. All right.
Rumbles. And I changed my mind. But what I did not know as Selena Zito wrote in The Washington Examiner is that do you know that the attorney general of California named Kamala Harris sued Barack Obama to make sure they didn't frack off fracking California on federal lands?
Really? I mean, how great would that have been for Trump to bring up in the debate? But.
Those are the types of things those who hits and misses, but it looks like and almost everyone agrees. There was no price to pay or to gain from the debate when it came to the overall polls. So I was not at the DNC. I was at the RNC.
I've been at the DNC before. Evan Barker was. Evan's a big donor to the DNC, but not anymore.
She wrote a column about it. Evan Barker joins us now. Hey, Evan. Hi.
Hi, Brian. And by the way, I'm not a donor. I actually was a fundraiser.
Yes. So I worked as a fundraiser for U.S. House and Senate candidates, all Democrat off and on for the last 10 years. So tell us your background.
I thought it was so interesting you put that in. You grew up in a Democratic family, a working class family. So you have a sense of, you know, what it's like with the taxes, the burden, trying to make ends meet, going from paycheck to paycheck. And you were also born with a lung issue. So you were constantly going to the doctor. You always were sick. So you understood what health care, how much health care means. And you thought because of these issues, that's why I'm so comfortable in the Democratic Party. Did I portray your situation correctly? Absolutely.
Yes. So I grew up in the Midwest. I am originally from the Kansas City, Kansas, Missouri area. And I have a lot of union family members, construction workers in my family. I spent a lot of my childhood in and out of union halls. And I was also born with a rare genetic lung disease.
My dad was a small business owner, so it was just him. And my parents also divorced when I was very young. So, you know, as a child, I realized what it was like to basically be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. And my family had voted, you know, Democrat for a very long time. And that's what inspired me to initially get involved in Democratic politics. I first started interning for Barack Obama's campaign in 2008. And I was also an alternate delegate for Hillary Clinton when I was in high school, believe it or not.
And then so I kind of made a career out of this. But over the last couple of years, especially, you know, post 2020, I've just seen this shift in the Democratic Party where they are no longer connecting and resonating with the people in my family who used to vote for them. You know, I have several members of my family there in Missouri who voted for Barack Obama. And then, you know, when Donald Trump came along, they switched to him.
And for the longest reasons, like, or sorry, for the longest time, I couldn't understand why. And just over the last couple of years, I've started to process and just really see the way that the Democratic Party has completely become beholden to donors. And I know that this is also an issue with Republicans as well, I'm sure, you know, but I'm speaking to my experience working with the Democrats. And, you know, we're now the party of Dick Cheney, and the party of endless proxy wars and divisive identity politics. And I think that they just don't know how to speak to regular people anymore.
You felt it was vacuous, the talk of joy, you know, a bit brat summer that bothered you. And because there's so many serious issues out there. There's so many serious issues. And I think about my grandmother, you know, who was someone who voted for Obama and then has switched to Trump. And, you know, she lives in Missouri, and she is just surviving right now on her social security check. And this inflation has just totally been, it's just been so difficult on her. And I think that, you know, people say, Oh, well, you know, yes, there's been inflation, but at the same time, we've seen, we've seen wages go up. Well, what about people like my grandmother who are no longer working, you know, like, she has to go to three different grocery stores when when she grocery shops, just to find or, or sorry, just to be able to buy groceries, you know, the way that she used to when she could just go to one grocery store, you know, she has to do all of this extra work to scramble to get by. And I just when I was at the DNC, I didn't hear much about the economy at that point.
You know, Kamala Harris had even put any economic positions on her website. And I just I just felt like so disgusted by the fact that I was just in this giant arena with all of these people just mindlessly going along with this, you know, just her just becoming the nominee overnight. And it just felt so incredibly out of touch.
Oprah being there, you know, just just telling people like my grandmother that they should just be complacent with joy. And the one thing you could say, Evan, on top of it, you could say, well, you know, we're coming out of a pandemic. Yeah, you were coming out of it. And they said, don't do the rescue package because you already had one in December of a ridiculous amount of money that was more than Trump asked for from Congress. And then you put the rescue package in, you do the inflation reduction act and you get seven point two and infrastructure to trillion dollars. That's what you chose to do. So either own it, just say that's what I chose to do instead of saying, well, I inherited a mess. Well, wait a second.
You didn't have to spend seven trillion dollars. Just tell us what you're going to do. I feel like they're hiding the ball. And the reason why AOC and others to the way to the left are not saying anything is they believe that she's going to do exactly what they want as long as she can win the election. Yeah, and that's I mean, that's what it comes down to is like the Democrats have they have a huge messaging issue, like they don't know how to talk to regular people anymore. Do you find other people in your family that aren't? Do you find the other your friends that were at the DNC? Did you find anybody else echoing what you're saying and what you're doing?
Quietly, privately. You know, when I first went public with my op ed and before that, I had actually posted a video on TikTok, which is what led to the op ed. I posted it to maybe like 30, 60 people and ended up getting like 10 million views.
It was totally it was totally crazy. But privately, I got, you know, several messages from people saying, you know, wow, you're really brave. I can't believe you're saying this. Like, these are things that I've thought. And I have just been too afraid to say because I don't want to lose my job or I don't want to make it so that I can't have a job in the future.
But thank you for saying it, you know, but they would never, ever say it publicly. Do what you did. I did. And I've I think maybe it's just growing up with an illness.
It's always made me sick. And I realized, you know, how precious life is. But I I just feel like it's important to speak the truth.
So that's what I've been doing and I'll continue to do. And, you know, a lot of those people that were that were reaching out to me privately, you know, after after all these Fox News appearances are no longer speaking to me at all. So, you know, it's it's been it's been a very interesting experience. What is your sense with the how's the election? The election was today.
What do you think? Who wins? Oh, man, I think it'll be really, really close. I think it's going to come down to Pennsylvania, really. And I was even saying this, you know, a few weeks ago before before the DNC, when Kamala announced her her running mate, I thought it was a strategical error that she selected Tim Walz. I think it would have been a lot better if she had picked. I think she would have had a better chance if she had picked Governor Shapiro. So I think it's going to come down to P.A.
and I think it's going to. Well, if you are right, Evan Barker, that means that the fact that he said, hey, you got to give me the judge, you got to tell me what I'm going to do. I want to be productive as vice president, that she did not want that. Governor Shapiro breathing down her neck. So she went with someone that's not going to bother, that promised not to run. And that could be that's the same. That's the same mindset. That's the reason she's sitting at the Al Smith dinner.
I am not confident enough to sit there and memorize a few jokes and make fun of myself. And I am not confident enough to put a talented governor with the like of an eyes, extremely talented, so-called moderate from Pennsylvania in a state I got to have instead I'm going to pick Minnesota, a state I already have. So and by the way, they don't let the guy do interviews. He used to be a surrogate for Biden on every weekend. They do not let him talk to the press. It's insane. She doesn't talk to the press either. And I want to say probably by at this point, I've probably done more interviews than Kamala Harris.
She I definitely have. So, yeah, I mean, it's crazy. We're living through historical times. Well, anyone who says, Evan, I don't I can't believe you did that. Just say read it after you read your column. People understand why you did it.
It makes total sense. And then come back. You'll get your friends back if they would just read it. Yeah, that's a great point.
I'm not sure if all of them really have, but I don't know. I think they're they're just they're running away from me right now. And that's OK. You know, I'm OK with being braved and alone. That's fine. Now I'm getting now I'm getting sad.
No, it's fine. I've got a really good support system around. I've got I've got really good family. You know, actually, a lot of my family are there. They're really happy.
They're like, oh, she's finally seen the light. All right. Good. Yeah.
Thanksgiving to look forward to. All right. Yeah. Evan Barker, thank you very much. Interesting insight. Everybody's opinion matters.
