Today we bring you the second part of the message entitled Preaching Jesus. The text is Acts chapter 5, verse 42. and daily in the temple and in every house they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. We have pointed out that when we preach the gospel we're preaching Jesus. That's what the gospel is all about, Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
And then we'll go on in the message today to talk about when we preach doctrine or when we talk about the church or when we talk about daily living. If we're preaching it correctly, we're preaching Jesus. It is in the gospel of grace. It is described that way in Acts chapter 2, verse 24. And then in Ephesians 2, verses 8 and 9, it says, For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves.
It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. That certainly should come as good news. To someone who has struggled and tried a variety of ways to make things right, only to realize they have failed. You may have heard the broadcast this morning, and I was reading a letter from a prisoner that had come. They said I'd been under that teaching Yeah.
pointed out there were many things I needed to do. I was constantly trying to reach a higher standard. I was trying to jump through the hoops. I found no help. And what a joy to have heard the gospel of grace.
It's by the grace of God. One of our hymns expresses it this way. what was there in you that could merit esteem? or give the Creator delight. Twas even so, Father, You ever must sing.
because it seemed good in thy sight. Nothing in us. that could merit his favor. Rebellious sinners. I'm not going to just One day, melt their hard, stony hearts.
Those who are spiritually blind are not going to just arbitrarily open their eyes one day. Those who are deaf cannot unstop their ears, and so what is it? It's grace. that brings about a change. It's God's work for the power of His Holy Spirit.
And so when we preach the gospel, we're preaching Jesus. And that's not only the case with the gospel, fundamental basic truth itself. But when we're preaching any doctrine, if it's preached aright, We're preaching Jesus. We preach about God. God is holy.
We read there in Isaiah chapter 6 that vision that the prophet received of the seraphim singing holy, holy, holy, and it's an awesome sight. And over and over again, we're reminded that there is no darkness in God. He is light, he is holy. He is powerful. He has all power.
To accomplish his purposes, he's sovereign. He's working his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth, and none can stay his hand or say unto him, What doest thou? He's faithful, he keeps his covenants, he remembers his promises, he's merciful. And is love. God is love.
But will it say all of that? We also learn he is a spirit. And they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
So you begin to try to fathom this. If God is a spirit, How how can I Crystallize some of my thoughts to perceive a little more about him. But you see, even when we're preaching about God, It preached Jesus. Because Jesus Christ reveals God. In the Gospel of John chapter 1.
Verses 1 to 3: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him. We're talking about Jesus Christ, you see. We're not just talking about...
Someone who set a good example, somebody who was a great teacher. We're talking about the one who is the Creator. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. And then in the 14th verse of the same chapter, and the word was made flesh. Here it is.
The word was in the beginning. This is Jesus Christ with the Father before the world began.
Now the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory and the glory as the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. We want to have some better understanding about God. You look at Jesus. You observe his life. You give attention to his teaching.
and you learn more. about God. We want to talk about this salvation From the standpoint of God's purpose to save. Even before time began. He determined to save sinners.
And so that takes us to the doctrine of election. A doctrine that Numbers of people have difficulty with. See, I just can't understand. How this could be?
Well, We have to take the testimony of God's word. Ephesians chapter 1, verse 3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be without blame before him and love. You can't preach election without preaching Jesus. God chose a people in Jesus Christ. God made choice of a people and gave them to his son.
And so this is not some hard theological principle that only the deepest students can possibly embrace and talk about. This is a basic, easy to understand principle. God determined to save sinners. He didn't just determine to do it the day he saved you. If you're one of his, he determined to do it before he ever created the world.
Well, then we talk about the doctrine of predestination. Verse 5, having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself according to the good pleasure of his will. What is predestination? It's the determination of God to make a people like His Son, Jesus Christ. And so if we're preaching God's purpose of grace, God's purpose of saving people before the foundation of the world.
We can't preach that without preaching Jesus. And then if we're going to preach what is done for them. Galatians chapter 3, verse 13. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree. We can't preach.
redemption without preaching Christ because Christ is the Redeemer. And his blood is the price that was paid.
So we talk about redemption, we're talking about the work of Jesus Christ. We talk about regeneration. That's the experience whereby you become a part of his family. You have an experience of grace. Colossians chapter 1 verse 27 speaks of Christ in you, the hope of glory.
So if you're one of his, Christ takes up his abode in your heart. He is in you. And in the book of 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17, he says, Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new.
So the new birth or regeneration means You are in Christ and Christ is in you. This isn't some mystical thing that's totally separated from the person of Christ. This concerns Jesus Christ.
Well, then we talk about justification. Sinners by nature are unjust. To stand acceptably in God's presence, they need to be justified. We can't talk about justification without preaching Jesus. Romans chapter 3, verse 24, being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God.
Has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are passed through the forbearance of God, to declare, I say, at this time, His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of Him which does what? Believes in Jesus. And then Ramon is declared to be just on the basis of the finished work of Jesus Christ. Then we talk about sanctification. There are two phases of sanctification.
1 Corinthians 1, verse 30 says, But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, that according as it is written, he that gloreth, let him glory in the Lord. Jesus Christ is our sanctification. And from that standpoint, we are completely sanctified in Christ. But there is a progressive aspect of it as we grow in grace, as we walk more closely with him, as the fruit of the Spirit is being born in our lives. We're growing, and it all in Christ.
Well Then if we preach about The church. We preach Jesus if we preach it correctly. I've heard Men Talk about the church in such a fashion that you would feel it was in some exalted position that. It's not given in Scripture.
Some define it as being the place where salvation is made secure.
Some go at it in a variety of ways. But if we're going to preach about the church, We have to preach Christ. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 25 says that he gave himself for the church. He laid down his life. He secured those that were given to him by the Father.
Acts chapter 20, verse 28 says that he redeemed the church with his own precious blood. Colossians chapter 1, verse 18 says he is the head of the church. You see, without Christ. It would just be an institution. It would just be an assembly of people that had some common interest, but no spirituality about it.
Nothing that is going to bring glory to the Savior. But Ephesians chapter 3 verse 21 says that he receives glory in the church.
So the church is not something that takes precedence over Christ. It's subject to him. He is the head of the church and the savior of the body. We talk about the ordinances of the church. Again, there are some that set up the idea that the way to get to heaven is by submitting to gospel ordinances.
That when you go into the liquid grave of baptism, that your sins are washed away. But the scriptures tell us that it's not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God. When we put one down under the water, The mode of baptism is by immersion because it represents the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's one who has come to the point to say, I know I'm a sinner, I deserve to die, but my faith is in the one who died for me, and I want to be identified with him, and I want to walk in his kingdom service here. And then when we sit together at the Lord's table.
He says This do in remembrance of me. And as often as ye do this, ye do show forth the Lord's death till he come. The unleavened bread. represents his perfect sinless body. The wine represents his shed blood.
The two are separated, which speaks of death. And we, at that solemn moment, are reminded of what Christ has done for us. And we do show forth his death till it come. It's something that the church is to continue observing the ordinances until the Lord comes back. And so it is in anticipation that he is coming.
And then when we preach practical things. Preach about daily living. No way to correctly preach that unless we're preaching Jesus. Colossians Chapter 3, verse 17. It says, And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.
It's easy to become legalistic. Set up your own rules and your own regulations, and many times those who do that. Are really more interested in imposing their rules on other people than they are walking in them themselves. But you see, this matter of being a follower of Jesus Christ is not a legalistic approach, but in whatever you do, you have questions about whether this would be appropriate, what kind of decision I ought to make about this issue in my life, whatever you do, you do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now you know that if you take that as your guide, there will be some things off limits. You can't get all hot under the collar. Be upset and angry at somebody and say, Lord, I'm going to do this in your name, and you bless me while I tell this person off. You see, if you stop to think about doing what you do in his name, Can we? Calm me down a little bit.
Say there's some things I can't say, there's some things I can't do, there's some places I can't go. Because I can't do this in Jesus' name.
Next time you're tempted to go someplace where you shouldn't be going, say, Would I really want Jesus to be standing on the sidewalk when I came out? and see where I'd been. Would I want Jesus to walk in while I'm reading this book and look over my shoulder and say, What are you reading? But I want him to walk in while I'm watching television and You try to make an excuse. Oh, Lord, I don't usually watch this.
This just came on the screen kind of unexpectedly. He he knows all about what we do. And down to the basic thing of giving thanks. We're to be thankful people, giving thanks continually, and he says we have to give thanks. to God through the name of Jesus Christ.
And then We talk about love. Love is the badge of discipleship. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, that you have love one to another.
Well, is this One of those little things where you have kind of a warm, fuzzy speech and try to make everybody feel good about themselves and feel good about others? No, it's far deeper than that. Jesus says in John chapter 13, verse 34: A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. You want to know how you're to love others? in the same manner that Jesus loves.
How does Jesus love you? Does Jesus keep a record of all of your faults, failings, and sins and bring them up to you from time to time? Satan is the accuser of the brethren. He may bring them up. Your conscience may trouble you, but when you've confessed your sins of Jesus Christ, he doesn't bring them up.
If you're bringing up other people's faults and failings, you don't love like Jesus. If you allow your feelings to get hurt easily and you withdraw and you don't speak to people and you don't show love, you're not loving like Jesus. What about forgiveness? Book of Colossians chapter 3, verse 13 says, Forbearing one another and forgiving one another. If any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave, so also do ye.
This matter of forgiveness is a big issue. Many professed Christians stumble with it. I've had people just Tell me straight on, there's no need to talk to me anymore about forgiveness. I cannot forgive. Say if you just understood how deeply I've been hurt.
How this person has betrayed me, what they've said about me, what they've done to me, what I've gone through, I just cannot forgive. What does this passage say? You forgive as Christ forgave you. How has Jesus Christ forgiven you? Did he say?
I'll forgive a lot of things, but you're such a great sinner. Your offense is so severe. I will not forgive you. His promise is that if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. A lot of marriage problems across the land these days.
Many Conferences are held to try to help people deal with their marriage difficulties. Counseling sessions of every description, some good and some not so good. But you know, you can't fix a marriage. Christians cannot correct a difficulty in their marriage. Without Turning to Jesus.
Ephesians chapter five. Verse 24 and 25, Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it. Whether it's talking about the submission of the wife or the love of the husband. Both are connected to Christ.
You can come up with all kinds of Suggestions that people may have offered you, and some of them sound valid, some of them sound logical and reasonable, but here's the solution: we preach Jesus when it comes to solving. the problems in your home life. What about encouragement? Many things in life that make it difficult for us.
Sometimes hard to go on when the burdens are so heavy. We're going to get the encouragement. You listen to the philosophers of the day, they say, well, it's just a matter of a good positive mental attitude. You just got to believe in yourself. That's not the message.
We're preaching Jesus. You believe in yourself. You won't fix your problem, you'll have more problems than you've ever had before. Self is not the answer, it's part of the problem.
Well, where do you go when you need help? Philippians 4, verse 13 says, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Hebrews chapter 12, verse 2 says, Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. You're weary and running the race. How are you going to find the encouragement?
How are you going to find the strength? You're going to find it by looking unto Jesus.
Now The one taught by Jesus Christ. will not just believe his teaching. Not just embrace sound doctrine. But they will be like him. Luke Chapter 6 verse 40.
The disciple is not above his master. But everyone that is perfect shall be as his master. A person might be very studious. Make study the original language. might come up with some shades of meaning that are very interesting.
But no matter how sound and orthodox they may be, If it's just a matter of contending for principles, but there is no application of it in their life. They're not a true follower of Jesus. They haven't died to self. Take up your cross and follow me. The one that is.
Under The leadership The instruction of Jesus Christ. He's the master, he's the teacher. When he teaches, you don't just get The point. You don't just understand the principle, you become like him. I've heard people Try to argue points of doctrine when they were angry.
They were mean spirited. They showed contempt for anybody that disagreed with them. Friends? If you find a tendency toward that in your heart. I ask God to forgive you and help you.
Because those that are taught By Jesus Christ. are going to be life-giving. Have Listed up before you today. The name of Jesus Christ. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
That's the message we desire always to preach. That's what they were doing in the days of the early church, preaching Jesus. In the synagogue, from house to house, wherever God gave opportunity, they preached Jesus. Paul said, I determine to know nothing among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified. Acts chapter 4 and verse 12 says, Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
No other way. Many in our culture today say, oh, it's just a matter of sincerity. It doesn't matter what you believe, who you believe in. If you're sincere, you're going to wind up in heaven someday. That's not the teaching of the Bible.
Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me. If you are one who has been convicted of your sin, you've been humbled to see I may have been at one time like the proud Pharisee, I may have been indifferent to the whole thing, I may have raised questions and raised objections, but I realize that I am lost and ruined without. Saving grace, and I see that Jesus Christ is the only way, the only Savior. And he says, All that the Father giveth me shall come to me.
Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out. You say, I may be too unworthy. He says, Him that cometh, I will in no wise cast out. You say, I don't understand everything. Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.
May you come to him today by faith. Yeah. Out of my bondage, sorrow and love. Mm. Jesus, I come.
Jesus, I come. Be into thy frame. Gladness and light, Jesus, I call. I pray that this message entitled Preaching Jesus has been a blessing to you. and that you're one whose heart has been made tender by the work of the Holy Spirit to appreciate the greatness and glory and beauty of Jesus Christ, the only hope for fallen ruined sinners.
What a blessing when he tells us, he that believes on the sun has everlasting life. I hope that you will write us and until next week at this same time, may the Lord richly bless you all. Out of my shame Failure and loss, Jesus, I come. Jesus I call. The Baptist Bible Hour has come to you under the direction of Elder Leser Bradley Jr.
