For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the number one pediatrician recommended brand. After we crown the NBA champion in Boston, they've already held their ticker tape parade with the duck boats in downtown. Now finally, the NHL joins the party.
But of course, we wouldn't have it any other way. A game seven for Lord Stanley's Cup in South Florida between two teams and fan bases desperate to end a drought. For the Panthers, 30 years in the making to get to this point after being denied a season ago by the Golden Knights. For the Edmonton Oilers, no cup since 1990.
And for the nation of Canada, no cup since 93. So much riding on this game seven featuring, as you've heard him called over and over, the best player in the world. And that's not me, although I do agree with that. The players think he's the best player in the world. It all comes down to this.
Wow. And I will be honest, I was anxious. I could feel the tension from the time they started pregame. In South Florida, listening to either the TV broadcast, although at that time, I was listening more to the radio broadcast because I wanted to hear the flair and the flavor and the excitement.
Already knowing that our friend Jack Michaels of the Edmonton radio network would be joining us, regardless of win or loss, I wanted to be sure that I heard what he had to say to set it up. And he kept using the phrase, biggest game in NHL Stanley Cup playoff history. Biggest game in the history of this event.
You can confirm or deny, you can agree or disagree, but I would say it lived up to all the hype. But as always, when you get to a game where the winner takes all, especially for a title, there is this strange dichotomy. The thrill of victory, the energy, the electricity, the relief, the emotion, the smiles, the joy. Finally, all of it comes pouring out for the winning team. But for the team on the wrong end of it, the team that comes so close to making history, it's gut wrenching. It's brutal. It's the agony of defeat.
So we have a lot to get to. I hope that you enjoyed the game. I love that Kaitlyn Clark and Angel Reese were not playing. The NBA was done. Yes, there were some good baseball games, but in June that doesn't take the place or hold a candle to the NHL and the Stanley Cup final.
Although the Celtics were getting introduced in Boston at Fenway Park, our friend Sean Grandy sent me a video of the music and the video they were playing on the big board and then the Red Sox end up rallying and walk off with the Celtics there in the ballpark. So that's kind of funny and yes there's always news. There's always other sports we can talk about, but it's championship Monday and so not only does the Stanley Cup final game seven take center stage, but how about the winner take all affair for the college world series title between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Texas A&M Aggies, neither of whom had ever taken home the prize and these were going on simultaneously.
So I saw a friend of mine that I worked with at a previous network tweet that the last button on her remote was getting a major workout. Oh yes, that's exactly how I felt and I am ever thankful for a DVR on days and nights when there are multiple games and multiple events that we have to follow. Here's the thing though, finally, I'm not going to complain, the winter sports and the spring sports, they're over. That's it, put it in the books. Yeah, finally we have champions in hoops and hockey as well as in college.
So the college sports season is officially done on June 24, 2024. A day to remember, a day that will live in infamy. I know there are some hurting hockey fans north of the border, our friends to the north, though there are some ties to Canada obviously and some players that are not from the United States that were hoisting the Stanley Cup on this night. We will talk to Jack Michaels. He always brings the energy.
We'll get his perspective, his insight. What was the major difference between the three previous Oilers wins and this game tonight? What happened to all the goals?
It's not like Sergei Bobrovsky had to make a bazillion saves, though he was brilliant, even without a stick in period number three. Also, what do they do with the rats? Seriously, it's icky.
I know they're rubber or some other substance that probably isn't biodegradable, but gross. We see enough of those in big cities. We do not need to see them on the ice and yet I love that Panthers fans get so into it. It's funny because Jay sent me a text with the word rat and an emoji, right?
Because the emoji is all over social media in the last few hours and I said something about where's the cat and then I realized, oh wait, there's plenty of cats there in surprise. They're the Panthers after all. The Panthers become the 22nd active franchise to win the cup. It's a great story anytime you get a brand new team and a brand new fan base to taste this redemption, to taste this vindication.
And for the Panthers, it's well documented. They started this journey last spring, right? They started this journey by knocking off the Bruins as an eight seed, the Bruins who had the best regular season in hockey history. They knock off the Bruins. They get to the team like a final only to get essentially smoked off the ice by the Golden Knights and yet they realized they had an opportunity and they were not going to let it pass. They've talked about it all year long. How hard they worked in the summer when a lot of guys were sitting on their rumps. Maybe they're going fishing and that's okay.
It's all right to take time off. This team did not take the time off. They've been churning and burning toward this end and it nearly went up in smoke. This opportunity nearly disappeared after the Oilers came roaring back and forced to game seven. No doubt there was a ton of pressure, maybe even some nerves, especially for the players who recognize what happens if they don't win. Now the story from Paul Barrese, he told it after the game, but he was talking about it before the game with his own team. What he noticed when he got to the arena really early. When he got to the arena, early. When I come in yesterday morning we got this big bank of six TVs and one of them has a network on it I want and the banner is and I'm not if the Florida Panthers lose is this the biggest collapse in sports history and that damn thing is sitting on the tv and you know you're waiting for like roll it people let's move it 15 minutes so I'm waiting by the door for my video guy to come in and say so we have these banks it's a new rank right we have that all over get that network off our tv because I'm sitting there going and I don't like it I'm 57 but what happens if you're 25 and you're going I gotta live 50 more years as being a part of the biggest collapse in sports history so from from the loss to the drop of the puck something has to change and something has to get better and that would be where I think I worked once the puck stopped tonight I was done working and I liked our first so it was good I was good I was at peace with I wanted to win but we weren't scrambling around in the first trying to find our game he pivots there a little bit but I appreciate what he had to say Paul Maurice who was out of hockey for a time but decided to take the job with the panthers so he could be closer to his son who was in college nearby and got swept up on a moving train is that what we heard from one of our panthers insiders last week Paul Maurice says in my work where I really earned my money I'm paraphrasing is from the time we lost game six to the time the puck dropped on game seven once they're out there on the ice they're on their own there's not a whole lot I can do I can make substitutions I can call a time out here and there but really once they're on the ice and the puck drops this is on them these are the best players in the world but did you hear what he said after the first period I felt like it was good after the first period they weren't scrambling they weren't tight they weren't tight they were playing their game and it was so different from what we saw in games four five and six it's after hours with Amy Lawrence we're just getting started hope you survived and managed your Monday I told you hot-bellied pigs so it's a championship Monday in which we crown the winner of the Stanley Cup as well as the winner of the college world series and then yeah we've got pig racing still if you haven't seen it I know this time last night I hadn't shared the video yet but it's been up now for uh 20 hours or so and you all are laughing along with me also I apologize for how hard I'm laughing on the video I didn't realize how loud it was until I watched it back a few times anyway legit one of the funniest animal videos I've ever seen in my life and I actually took it I laughed so hard so if you need a laugh on this Monday evening uh Canadian hockey fans maybe turn your attention to pot-bellied pig races I will retweet just because it's it's so terrific thanks so much for all of your comments I know a lot of you have seen it already and your joy makes me happy you can find me online at ALOL radio and then on our Facebook page too it's after hours with Amy Lawrence eight five five two one two four two two seven that's eight five five two one two four two two seven Verhage works the end boards then has it the trapezoid Rodriguez near side the power plays over shot tip they score Rodriguez got it on net it was tipped out in front and the panthers have the first one here indeed seven 15 33 to go in the first and the panthers are on the board it was Carter Verhage in front getting a stick on it he'll whistle it in deep they'll give him center Tarasenko slashing around the boards only to see that disrupted by CC beautiful pass breakaway shot score what a finish and Edmonton has tied it up brilliantly Doug Plagans on the panthers radio network and Jack Michaels who will join us again top of the hour from south Florida on the Oilers radio network so they're tied after the first period and while there were a handful of quality chances for the most part it was tight meaning the pucks weren't flying all over the place it was pretty clear the Oilers weren't getting the rushes and the breaks and the breakaways although they did score their goal on a breakaway but for the most part it was less open there was less motion as I say fewer rushes and gosh for a lot of the the third period even late second period that favored the Oilers did you see how long some of those shifts were as the Oilers kept the puck in the panther zone for what seemed like eternity multiple times especially in the third period the panthers went 10 plus minutes without a shot on goal in the third period and toward the end of the game you kind of felt like it was survival that's all it was it was survival do everything you possibly can sacrifice sacrifice your body sacrifice life and limb but they were aggressive and they were tough and there was a lot of checking and the game was much more of a pace that the panthers wanted to play like they did earlier in the series so they're tied in the second and already the tension and the angst in my stomach was building out the right point for CC down along the boards then dry sidle Vogel cuts out front and a save Bobrovsky and then it's pushed away out of harm's way by Kulikov and the panthers break it out quickly here's Reinhardt at the right wing side Reinhardt to the right circle a shot and he scores Sam Reinhardt gives the panthers a 2-1 lead here at game seven 4 49 to play here in the middle frame and Sam Reinhardt out of the right circle gives the panthers the lead the call there on panthers radio and while he does mention that Kulikov knocks it out of harm's way they were inches inches away from taking the lead in the earlier sequence right before Reinhardt gets the break away and the defense they were packed way back in and so he was able to take a clear shot and a shot in which he can really wind up and and smack the puck so that was a mistake that they pointed out on the broadcast but on the other end of the ice in the panther zone what you have is a puck that gets away kind of squirts away from Sergei Bobrovsky and if not for Kulikov who slides into the crease and knocks the puck backward and out of the goal it's the Oilers who end up with a 2-1 lead instead a few seconds later it's Reinhardt on the other end whether the defense was scrambling whether they were just backpedaling thinking it was better to be in front of Stuart Skinner either way Reinhardt had a clean look at it and was able to slap it home again that's Doug Plagans on panthers radio in the third period as I say the Oilers had the clear advantage in terms of the attack and there were long long stretches where the puck never left the panther zone Florida goes 10 plus minutes without a shot on goal and as much as Sergei Bobrovsky was criticized and was in a white hot spotlight the last three games for giving up 18 goals never all on the keeper but still 18 goals he was up to the challenge in period three McDavid out to the line a drive and a save made by Bobrovsky that time on Bouchard right side a left top echo across one time Bouchard save made by Bobrovsky with the pad out to the line again Bouchard he'll hold it for the Oilers long shot in front of chance quick death and somehow some way that stays out of the oh my goodness wow what a pile up down there and somehow Bobrovsky on top of it and Zach Hyman looked like he had a wide open net and he wasn't able to cash in and the panthers remain up a goal with 7.02 to go here in the third a couple of moments that I will remember from that third period with Sergei Bobrovsky there were a couple of sequences where he had to stop three and four shots before the panthers could clear it or before the whistle blew in one particular sequence he does stop a couple of shots pucks kind of bounce it around in front of him and then Connor McDavid ends up with it producer jay what would you say maybe two feet from Bobrovsky I mean he was right in front of the crease he was right off the I guess if you're looking at the goal it would be off the left post he could have reached the stick out and smacked the post that's how close he was and he has a chance he flips it and Bobrovsky manages to get his pad his skate and his pad in front of it there was another sequence where Bobrovsky loses his stick in the fray so he's standing in goal the Oilers still have the puck they're trying to generate shots and he's there completely well not completely exposed but exposed without a stick can't get to his stick has to save a couple of shots that come at him without his stick until he can cover it up and the whistle blows so these were very tense times I was very tense were you very tense do you hear that I was very tense it was a good game it was exactly what you would want and expect from a Stanley Cup final and yet so interesting that game seven is almost the opposite of what we got in games four five and six we'll get the Oilers perspective of course but you're going to remember the final call from the Panthers forever 23 seconds left to what Panthers fans to their feet Bouchard has missed tricidal down to our right Forsling in the corner he'll try and hold this 10 seconds left to what Panthers a dream 30 years in the Florida Panthers have won the Stanley Cup you always will have a place in South Florida oh my god the Panthers have won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history yeah start the celebration South Florida the Panthers have done it term supply the florida panthers are the 2024 stanley cup champions oh we cross the finish line buddy we cross it oh what a group of budgie guys pomerie's congratulations oh what a team what a gutsy effort that is some cojones boys wow oh oh i am happy for bill lindsay the emotion is palpable obviously he was taking this very personally and he should he spent the majority of his career as a florida panther and never won the stanley cup 506 career games with the panthers scored a let's say what do you have a 67 goals 98 assists 165 career points with the panthers and so he very much can take ownership of this oh and lose his marbles oh history you can hear doug plagans with the emotion in his voice so it's probably a good thing that bill saved him by screaming and yelling otherwise doug might have broken down so yes congratulations to the florida panthers and in that moment of course there's emotion from both sides all that release and that relief and they're streaming onto the ice and the rats are flying and they're throwing gloves and sticks up into the air recognizing that the hard work it was all worth it and of course they did not expect it to be easy but boy didn't they take the toughest road possible the highest degree of difficulty meanwhile and in the final few seconds and i know we're getting to our break a little bit late but in the final few seconds of that third period florida did really what florida does which is just surround the puck make it nearly impossible for the the oilers to get a clean look or even to possess the puck in any way uh that that mad kind of i don't 10 seconds final 10 seconds in which you got guys just crowded into a corner someone's probably standing on the ice or excuse me standing on the puck stepping on the puck curled up around the puck who cares that's all the panthers cared about was the time coming off the clock and so as that final buzzer sounds and their celebration begins you see a couple of the oilers pounding their sticks onto the ice uh connor mcdavid went down to his knees with about i think it was 25 30 seconds to go in that third period he was mid ice but you could see him on camera it took him a long time to get up i mean a long time good three four seconds before he could get up off the ice he was exhausted he gets over to the bench and he just puts his head down on the boards and these two teams gave it absolutely everything they had everything they left it all out there on the ice and it always sucks when you're the team that's given it everything you have but you don't have the trophy to show for it except for these florida panthers this year of vindication this 31 years in the making think about all the panthers that have come before them like bill lindsay who never won the stanley cup and so this is not just a victory for the 23 24 panthers but for the entire franchise and its fan base and so many incredible stories so we'll get to some of those you'll hear gary betman award the con smyth trophy which we didn't actually get to hear on tv because they were drowned he was drowned out by the booing and i'm assuming the words we can't air on the radio or tv uh abc chose to mute the mic for a good jay what would you think like 10 15 seconds yeah completely silent yeah and so you really didn't get to hear all of that not that we need to hear what the crowd was chanting but uh yeah a little bit of a strange feeling when it's a player from the losing team that ends up as the mvp of the playoffs just a reminder it's not the mvp of this series it's the mvp of the entire nhl playoffs and they are now in the books on twix at a law radio pig racing oh and my thoughts in the final few minutes of the stanley cup final i will say that uh my brilliant analysis includes something like this holy crap ah yeah something along those lines oh it's history yeah exactly exactly that oh well not the cheering just the ah my stomach my the tension that is some cojones boys heart palpitations so yeah you can find me on twix uh and also on our facebook page glad to have you with us thanks so much for joining us here on after hours with amy lawrence you are listening to the after hours podcast 23 seconds left fans to their feet who's sharp pass miss tricidal down to our right forceling in the corner he'll try and hold this 10 seconds left to what panthers a dream 30 years in the making is a reality start the celebration south florida the panthers have done it stanley cup champions the florida panthers are the 2024 stanley cup champions oh we cross the finish line buddy that is some cojones boys wow oh this is after hours with amy lawrence i am pretty confident that in that moment bill lindsey has no idea or isn't thinking about the fact that his yelling and his exaltation will be replayed over and over and over and over again it's after hours with amy lawrence did you know about paul maurice he was once the last player chosen in the nhl draft it's not called mr irrelevant but how about that the man has been proving people wrong his entire life he's been three decades in the nhl and i can imagine he thinks it's worth the weight producer jay found this particular comment from him postgame it's a little bit why that sarah mclaughlin commercials are good right like we resonate with suffering animals oh dear and i think they've seen me on tv for 30 years and they're kind of going can you give this guy's stanley cup because this is painful and pitiful to watch did you know he holds the record for most losses by an nhl coach all right it was all worth it it was all worth it it was all worth it incredible we'll talk to jack michaels of the edmund tenola is coming up next hour and just so you know it's one of those things we have to do beforehand we can't wait till the game is done is done typically uh jack had promised to come on the show with us win or lose he will keep his promise no doubt and you will get plenty of reaction uh from the florida panthers maybe moving forward we'll have a chance to get someone else from the organization but we're excited to have jack with us again they're still in south florida not traveling back to edmonton until tuesday sometime and so even before they award the stanley cup gary bettman is out there getting booed himself to award the con smyth trophy gary bettman let's go ringside first congratulate the edmonton oilers and your florida panthers on an incredible stanley cup final the winner of the con smyth trophy is a player who has been the most valuable for the entire playoff run connor mcdave the player who is going to be given the con smyth this year led the playoffs in scoring and broke wayne gretzky's assist record for a playoff the winner of the con smyth is connor mcdavid what do you think marco maletti is here in studio the panthers fans were chanting at that moment that required a probably 15 second mute on abc i'm pretty sure i'm not allowed to say no but could you take a guess to start with s f uh i want to go with f and probably mcdavid at that point it's either that or bettman uh completely muted the entire broadcast look and and i understand the concept of why they did this and this is not to take away anything from what connor mcdavid did in these playoffs because he was amazing and he willed almost edmonton to this spot but when you have a celebration especially in the you know on the opponent's ice and they have just won the stanley cup the last thing you do is give the mvp and i know it's for the entire playoffs to someone on the losing team because if you notice mcdavid wasn't even out there to accept the come out they were still in the locker room but he wouldn't come out and i guarantee you his response would probably be mail it to me i don't care so what is the point so that what 20 years from now on his resume when he goes into the hall of fame it says con smyth winner because you want that to be there give it to bobrovsky give it to the panthers make everyone happy and including the player that wins it because he can actually celebrate with it instead of the other player that goes i don't want to see it put it on the plane put it with the luggage i don't even want to look at the damn thing that doesn't make any sense to me i i just i don't understand it at all i really don't so we'll get to hear from the panthers and their exaltation some of the conversations on the ice some of them off i love the matthew kachuck interview that he did with emily caplan right on the ice on abc about his dad and his brother and the emotions from his dad specifically as the final seconds were ticking off the clock and his dad just loses it right because he played in the nhl never won a stanley cup uh his brother as well was really emotional so that was neat uh some stories told about other family members that i think it was hmm was it kulakov who was talking about his two little boys and they were out playing roller hockey the jay don't know yeah i think that was kind of like poso oh okay so he was talking about his two little boys who are well the oldest is eight years old and last night they were out in the driveway playing roller hockey and he was saying and this is what i was doing when i was eight years old but you get to actually be the stanley cup final game seven uh so got to share that with his boys uh which was really sweet so yeah some great family moments as always this comes a week after the celtics got to celebrate their championship and um i just love the redemption stories for sergei babrovsky do you know he's 35 years old he's played 14 years in the nhl and he had been over as in he'd lost every single stanley cup final game he'd been in before this year and it takes seven games and a lot of pressure uh incredible third period from him we were talking about paul marisa lifer in the nhl this was the third time he had coached in a stanley cup final of course had lost the first two well last year being with the panthers but not going back i mean trying to think when was it uh it was 20 something years ago right that he was with the hurricanes and they lost to the red wings so that goes back to like the early turn of the century yeah and he just he's one of those guys that's always been around and now finally has his moment which is pretty incredible so we'll hear from not just the panthers but the oilers as well carner mcdavid answered questions as did leon dryseidel neither one of them had a point in game seven and dryseidel did not have a goal in this entire series so there's a lot to talk about there that's stunning with the two two of the best players in the nhl though it is mcdavid who earns the con smyth and as you point out they'll probably have to mail it to him back to edmonton uh on twix at a law radio our facebook page as well the winter sports are finally in the books it's after out selling a little or a lot shopify helps you do your thing it in nick bled hard up the boards dry subtle knocked it down here's a chance for florida up the right-hand side the panthers plowing through it's still loose it's still wide for abriga's shot kachuk had it blocked and here come the owners steel rodriguez turns fires wide 20 seconds to go in this season game seven stanley cup final the owners come up ice one last chance boost guard up the right-hand side through dry settle panthers will try to pin it in the corner 10 seconds to go seven seconds florida two and it's in one oilers pulling two seconds one second the season is over the florida panthers have won the stanley cup two one in game seven this is after hours with amy lawrence i so appreciate the energy of jack michaels and the professionalism it was an exciting affair regardless of which side you were on quote unquote we use some of his stats some of his historical perspective to talk about what this game seven meant to the edmonton oilers and even before they dropped the puck on monday night he was reminding us on social it was nine months after their preseason opener seven months after they woke up on thanksgiving and they were 10 points out of a playoff spot but they made it all the way to a game seven and he did also point out the road team had captured the last three game sevens in the stanley cup final but the panthers prevail by a single goal one that was scored fairly early in the second period they make it stand up sergei babrovsky is up to the challenge and there are stories of the redemption and vindication all over the place but of course for the oilers who worked so hard to get to the final and had to dig themselves out of a ginormous hole they were the last place team in the nhl going back to the fall what do they do as an encore well there's always going to be time for the eulogy and then time to look ahead and move forward but on this night man the emotions they prevail and then that long flight back to edmonton on tuesday it's after hours with amy lord so that was jack michael's final call of course connor mcdavid was asked about winning the con smyth trophy he did not come out to receive it i would not have either the panthers fans didn't want to see him so it was a win-win for everyone but yeah he is the mvp of the nhl postseason uh yeah um you know obviously i guess in honor the names on that trophy but yeah i don't think he cares i mean it speaks to how amazing of a hockey player he is um but there's no no player in the world that that wants to win the stanley cup more than more than him and um does everything right every single day just um just to win it one day and um it's really hard especially him you know being being sad and yeah being being disappointed at the end leon dryseidel his line mate says what connor mcdavid cannot or will not he doesn't care there's no player in the world that wants to win it more than connor mcdavid and he was spent i mean they looked pretty tired i thought it was an astute observation by sean mcdonough who was doing the play-by-play on abc that the oilers were exhausted by the end of this game and really that's what you don't think about when a team digs out of a three oh well it was an 0-3 hole for the oilers we talk about it in the course of a single game how often a team that say they're 20 points down in the nba or they're three goals down in a an nhl game or they're seven runs down in a baseball game they use so much energy just to get back to even that often you have given it everything you've got and you just don't have enough to get over the hump well in this case it's over the course of the series think about what they've done in the three previous games the speed the power the explosiveness the aggressiveness they outscored the panthers and that includes game five in surprise 18 goals to five their attack was relentless but think about how much energy that took out of them just to climb out of the hole and then you saw the panthers a lot more aggressive they were checking they were physical in game number seven they looked like they had a new lease on life if you will like they were pushed back up against the wall and and that's kind of the case that's such human nature in this winner-take-all game they were both on even footing and the panthers were back to their style of game limiting the number of shots limiting the number of quality chances relying on the defense in front of sergei babrowski they did not score in their power play though they did score about three seconds after their power play man what a redirect by carter verhage by the way just the puck is traveling so fast put the stick out there and hope that it redirects into the net it's really about making contact as much as you'd like to say oh that was brilliant and maybe there are some cases where it's intentional but in that situation the puck is traveling just so fast you're trying to get a stick on it just so that you can see if you can slow it down because it was about to go wide way wide right oh sorry bills fans and so they were out of energy at the end and that includes connor mcdavid um and of course both he and dry sidle were shut out in games six and seven that second goal from sam rinehart for the panthers was huge you knew it was going to be tight you know game seven for the for the for the cup um you knew it was going to be a real tight game and it was going to come down to one thing here and there and you know we're a an inch away from going ahead to one right before they they go ahead to one and you know it's tough they do a good job of shutting things down and we had our looks just didn't find it early in the year a lot of people wrote us off uh vancouver series a lot of people wrote us off dallas was a walk over for for the stars against us um being down three nothing battling all the way back um just i don't know there's lots of things to be proud of leon dry sidle there's lots of things to be proud of do we have time for chris knoblock remember took over this team after they got off to a brutal start to the season it's more painful but i definitely wouldn't have liked to lose in fourth straight um i liked how our team responded and pushed and we're so close um but um yeah we lost to a good team you know in the second and third period i thought we found our game i thought we played really well uh couldn't capitalize on our opportunity especially in the third period where we had a couple glorious chances um you know i thought it was a game that could have went either way chris knoblock leon dry sidle connor mcdavid you can hear the emotion in their voices and again we'll have jack michaels who was around the team once this game seven was done sometimes play-by-play announcers don't want to share what the team is doing or how they're responding we'll see what he can share in the wake of this game seven but coming up next you've got to hear from the victors like
