AutoTrader. Happy summer to you. Heading into our first weekend, we were going to take some friends to the New Jersey State Fair that's taking place actually right near MetLife Stadium where the Jets and Giants play. It's about 15 minutes south of our house and we were going to go on Saturday evening because I love the State Fair. I love the food and the animals and the fried dough and the animals and the fried Oreos and the rides and the cheeseburgers and the petting zoo. I'm such a fair geek. It's so much fun, so goofy to go.
And so we were going to do that on Saturday instead of a traditional double date for dinner. And I'm trying to find tickets and there aren't any available. What does that mean? Does that mean that the State Fair, the ticket allotments sold out?
I wasn't expecting that. You have to buy them online I guess. I've never had this issue before as opposed to walking up and buying them. Now a lot of things are online. Why?
Because they can charge fees and have some other entity do it for them. I haven't been able to secure tickets so I'm going to have to see if I can. Can you scalp tickets to the State Fair or see if they're available for another weekend obviously because I'm striking out when it comes to this weekend.
So State Fair was on the schedule. I'm not sure it is anymore but either way it's supposed to be a hot, hot, hot and humid weekend in many parts of the country including places that are not used to the type of extreme heat and humidity that is in the forecast. So welcome back summer. If you are making plans for this weekend I hope the weather cooperates and you get to do everything that you would like to do. Still lots of parties, lots of welcome back summer festivities. I actually had some kiddos from my fourth and fifth grade class at church that were just wrapping up school this week so no doubt they're over the moon excited to be done. So happy summer, happy almost Friday. For us it's happy payday so that we can enjoy our summer. We'd love to hear from you on either Twix at A Law Radio or show account too at Amy After Hours and then our Facebook page. What is your favorite summer activity? Favorite summer activity there's a photo of mine so you can see mine if you check it out on either of our social sites and we'd love to hear your favorite summer activity. In fact I'm all in if you've got some brand new ideas. Our phone number is 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4CBS. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence in the wake of that emotional tribute at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama to honor Willie Mays, to honor the Negro League survivors and pioneers. Yes there was a baseball game it really became secondary as of course I appreciate your perspective many of you weighing in on both of our social sites. But there was another big story on Thursday which I'm still not exactly sure how I feel about it. I think it's odd, strange, kind of nutty, a little surreal. And maybe so disjointed that the Lakers would first offer their head coaching job to Dan Hurley who comes from coaching royalty, who's won back to back national championships, who has got the type of coaching experience but also the fresh perspective that aggressive approach, player development, a winning record to be sure, innovative offense, a reputation that precedes him as a coach. You offer the job to Dan Hurley but he turns you down so then the next option that I feel like couldn't be further from Dan Hurley if you put him on Jupiter. Dan Hurley and JJ Redick in my opinion seem to have zero in common except for the game of basketball but man this is not even the same path as Dan Hurley. How do you go from Dan Hurley to JJ Redick? If you have a pitch, you have a plan, you have a vision and remember what Dan said following his day long interview with Rob Palinka and Jeannie Buss, hearing their proposal he called it a compelling vision. The vision is not the same for Dan Hurley as it is for JJ Redick. You can't appeal to JJ as a coach because he's never coached before. How do you have the same vision for two very different men and two very different backgrounds?
Two very different paths to get to this point. If you're JJ, of course you take the job. That's a no brainer. That'd be like the job getting offered to producer J. Of course you take the job. It's the Lakers offering you their head coaching gig. There are very few people on the planet, Dan Hurley being one of them, that would have turned down the Lakers. Honestly, how many other coaches in the NBA would say no to the Lakers? There is no assistant in the NBA that would say no to the Lakers. I can imagine there are a bunch of head coaches that would have dumped their own gig and said yes to the Lakers. Probably the number of men who would turn down the Lakers, you can count on one hand. And I'm being serious.
I'm not being facetious. Dan Hurley is one of the few. Maybe Greg Popovich.
I'm thinking Eric Spolstra. Even he I feel like would take the Laker job. They just gave him a very fat contract. Remember he made him among the highest paid coaches.
I'm not talking about just like money aside. I'm actually not sure just because he works for Pat Riley and they have an incredible relationship and he's established an awesome tradition there. If I'm not mistaken, he is the longest tenured NBA head coach. The majority of the jobs in the league have turned over since the pandemic.
And that's how quickly this happens. It's probably the case for most of the pro sports out there. But yeah, how many other guys can you list who would turn down the Lakers? Dan Hurley was one of them because he believes he has a better gig.
And yeah, you could debate. It's a subjective opinion to everyone except for Hurley. He's the only one who has to make that decision. JJ Reddick fast track like many athletes to being courtside with a microphone and a headset. Just call the NBA finals. Remember ESPN slash ABC had a major shakeup with their broadcast team.
Right. They they laid off Van Gundy. Maybe both Van Gundys. They laid off Van Gundy. They have parted ways with different guys on both the set as well as the broadcast team. And JJ Reddick was one of the new voices slash personalities they tried out. I don't know how many of you listen to him. How many of you paid attention? He's been an analyst on games for the past three years, but this was his first shot at the finals.
So yeah, quite the meteoric rise. And I thought he did well. I think his personality partly made it work with a three man booth, if you will.
He and Doris were really careful to not step on each other. I mean, every now and then it happened. But they were gracious. They weren't clamoring for airtime. I can think of a bunch of guys that it wouldn't have worked because they, you know, they'd want to get their their opinions and their points out there.
And it's hard to do a three man booth. Mike Breen, of course, handled it professionally and perfectly, as he always does. But here's JJ Reddick's hard right turn from analyst to head coach of the one of the most iconic professional sports teams on the planet. Not to mention one of the best players of all time. You can think he's one.
You can think he's two. You can think he's better than MJ. Not better than Kobe Bryant.
Doesn't matter. He's one of the best players of all time. And when he retires, LeBron James may very well own every single scoring record the NBA has. He's a little bit like a Tom Brady now. That's his legacy. He's the old man, but he's still got it. And here is JJ Reddick, who hosts a podcast with LeBron going back to March, who is now his head coach. What?
Seriously, am I the only one who finds this crazy? Dan Hurley turns them down. And they pivot to JJ Reddick.
Jay, what am I missing? It's strange, but it's not like JJ Reddick's just a podcast. He did have a very successful NBA career.
No, I didn't say that. I just mentioned he doesn't have any coaching experience. None whatsoever. I guess if that's the guy LeBron wanted and the Lakers want to keep LeBron and the NBA is to keep your stars happy, what other choice did they have? Hire someone that LeBron didn't want if he wanted JJ Reddick?
It's interesting. It's definitely not Dan Hurley, but we don't know. Maybe he is. Well, he's not right now.
Definitely not right now. And he's not going the college route. According to the various reports out there, Rob Palinko wanted someone who could develop young talent, wanted a coaching staff that could and would put a priority on developing younger guys.
So actually teaching, coaching, training. JJ Reddick is still relatively young. I think he might be the same age as Joe Mazzulla. Mazzulla's what, late 30s? I think Joe Mazzulla. JJ's 39.
Thank you, Jay. How old is Joe Mazzulla? I feel like Joe Mazzulla is younger than Al Horford, but I could be wrong. Joe Mazzulla is only 35. Yeah, so he's younger than Al Horford. Okay, so in this situation, you've got coaches who are younger than some of their players. And I'm not saying that that's a prerequisite. You have to be older than your players.
That's dumb. Think about Sean McVay. Think about some of the younger, Jared, not Jared, Jared Mayo, now with the New England Patriots. I mean, you're talking about guys who are coming in relatively green.
I'm not saying it can't work. Zach Taylor, he's another one who was really young when he took over the Bengals. I don't remember how old Nick Sirianni, but I feel like Jonathan Gannon and who's the other one? Jonathan Gannon and who's the former? Antonio Pierce. Well, Antonio Pierce, but I think he's a little older. The two coordinators who left the Eagles and the one went to the Colts and the other went to, shoot, what is this?
It's not football season. Oh my gosh. Yeah, right? So Jonathan Gannon was one of them. I think Gannon might even be younger too. Stikin? Shane Stikin?
Shane Stikin. Colts coach? Yes. Right?
I don't know. Last year was his first year. It's not football season. We have a month to get ready. Shane Stikin. Thank you.
Yes, it's after hours with Amy Lawrence where we are real, if nothing else. So I don't think age is really a precursor, but to go from this kind of revolving door of coaches that had experience, think about it, Frank Vogel, who helped them win the 2020 NBA championship in the bubble. They bring in Darvin Ham, who reportedly is so respected by LeBron James because he played in the league and because he understands what it means to be, you know, someone who has to navigate the 82 game schedule, the playoffs.
La la la la la. He's got the pedigree. I know J.J. played for 15 years. I'm not knocking his playing career. I'm not telling you he wasn't great at what he did. If you remember, he was a great three-point shooter. He's got nearly a thousand games under his belt and he survived a long time.
I mean, he moved all around. He was drafted by the Magic when he was 22. I remember him coming in with the Magic. He spent time in Milwaukee with the Clippers. He was there with the Sixers for a couple of years, got kind of caught in their process, the Pelicans, the Mavericks, just a handful of games.
So an extended career. He was a great shooter. He averaged double figures in the NBA coming out of Duke.
You know, he had a 13-year playoff streak. Yeah, I mean, the guys got a lot of experience, but I'm still flummoxed and flabbergasted. Oh, those are two good words. Flummoxed and flabbergasted. Also, why am I looking up and seeing The Rock dressed like Mrs. Doubtfire on a commercial? Sounds horrifying. Yeah, some drink with zero sugar and he's wearing a wig of curly hair and a blouse. I don't want to drink that.
I'm not sure why The Rock dressed as a housewife or a grandmother, like Mrs. Doubtfire, if you know that reference. I have no idea why that would make people want to drink that particular beverage, but do you see it? I don't have that on in here. Of course, what do those two green and yellow stuffed blobs that walked around Radio Row in Vegas make people want to drink Starry?
Starry soda. I still haven't had it. Yeah, no, I haven't either. Anyway, back to JJ. He was certainly thinking about coaching years ago. So when he got out of the league, and he's a smart guy, right? He's a smart guy. He's a guy who has started talking about basketball. He's watching a lot of basketball as an analyst.
He did an interview on The Bleacher Report with Taylor Rooks a couple years ago in which he described and expressed and shared why he thinks he would be a good coach. I don't necessarily think it's one thing. I feel like I know the game pretty well because of some coaches I played for, really specifically Coach K. He taught me about adaptability and our game, the NBA changes so fast year to year. Having the mindset of just being open to change.
One of my greatest skills as a human being is my ability to communicate and communicate in an open and transparent way. I did that as a teammate. I think that's part of coaching, not avoiding things and not avoiding confrontation. Locker rooms, team chemistry, it's a very fragile thing.
We see it all the time in the NBA. I look at coaching as a way to help. It's like I had so many people help me in my career and not just head coaches, but assistant coaches, player development people. And they have such a valuable place in my heart and in my life.
And I'd love to be one of those people someday. There is no doubt he's intelligent. He's got a high basketball IQ. He's thoughtful. He's put a lot of time into it. He's got a bunch of experience at the game's most pressure packed stages. He's played alongside greats.
He performed in the clutch. He mentions Coach K and that basketball training and pedigree. I'm not saying he isn't going to be a head coach, I'm sorry, a positive, higher, maybe even potentially a great head coach someday.
I'm not saying that. My question is, how do you go from Dan Hurley to J.J. Redick? That's the part that I think is really fascinating. Again, you probably can't name more than four people who you really think would turn down the Lakers. But if you're presenting a compelling vision, which is the phrase that Dan Hurley used, a compelling case and a compelling vision for why he should be the coach of the Lakers, how do you then pivot to J.J. Redick? I don't know. And if you're J.J. Redick, I don't think you care, right?
Who cares? You got the job. I've said this before, I say this to young women and young broadcasters that I mentor. Don't get caught up in, I wasn't their first choice. I wasn't their second choice. I got the job after it was offered to and turned down by multiple other people.
Who gives a crap? I don't care if you're eighth choice. I didn't ever care if I was eighth choice. If other people are going to turn down the job and that means it falls to you, great.
You can prove that that company or that entity should have made you the first choice and that they're just blessed that the other people turned it down so they got to you. Who cares how you got the job? You've got the job.
But from my perspective, from an outsider's perspective, yeah, this is a pretty interesting twist. Antonio Daniels on Sirius XM giving his reaction. JJ Reddick taking that Lakers head coaching job. I don't think it's a job you can turn down.
Like realistically speaking, if like you said, if you had to rank all 30 jobs as far as popularity, all these other accolades that come along with the job, I think this job will be first. You got here and you got the New York Knicks, you know, and that's I don't think that this is a job you can turn down. Interesting that he says the Lakers and the Knicks. I feel like there are a couple of other franchises, namely the Celtics, that you would put into that category.
But either way, that's neither here nor there. He's right. If you're JJ Reddick and you have no clue what you're doing, you fake it till you make it. And the other thing you do immediately is find other head coaching veterans like a Doc Rivers. Although I think I feel like JJ and Doc have a history, right? Like JJ's said some pretty negative things about Doc Rivers.
Yeah. So I'm not I'm not suggesting he tries to lure Doc away from the Bucks. Only that you find veterans who coached in the league, who know the ropes, who understand it. Head coaches are not just about X's and O's. Head coaches are not just about player management. Head coaches don't even do their own scouting most of the time.
You know what they're about? Managing egos, managing playing time and managing the media. How often I've heard from head coaches that the one thing they didn't really expect is you're a manager more than you're a coach. The people who work for you, the people who play for you. The egos are ginormous. Obviously, they make a hell of a lot more money than you do. Now, JJ knows these things because he played in the league. But it's very often not what they expect because it's less coaching and more managing. And also, you've got to deal with the media. That part is a heavyweight. You don't like it, but you have to do it.
So this is going to be a lot change. How many other people thought Jeff Saturday, the first time that you really considered JJ Reddick for the Lakers? Jeff Saturday. Hall of Famer. He's got a playing pedigree that includes some of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, for heaven's sake.
One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He knows the game inside and out. And very often, offensive linemen are the smartest guys on the team. I've heard that, but I've also interviewed a lot of them, and it's true. But smarts and experience and even getting the attention of the locker room and having credibility because you've been there doesn't make you a good coach.
It doesn't mean you can handle all of it. This is going to be quite the experiment for, again, the legendary Lakers in what could likely be Lebron's last season. Seriously, who do you think is actually coaching the team? Not two, not three, not four, not five. Oh, man. All right. Love to hear from you at A Law Radio or After Hours with Amy Lawrence on Facebook.

Music. Richards kick out for a Sam Houser three that rims out. But it's no longer what could be or what might be.
Now it just is. The 2024 Boston Celtics are one of the greatest teams in NBA history. They were told they had to win. There's only one thing you can do when expectations are that high. Meet them. And there's only one way to stop being haunted by the ghosts and the legends and the champion's attackers building. Join them. Together they have and together they stand alone on top of the mountain for now. And once again the Boston Celtics stand alone for all time. It is Banner 18. The mission demanded is mission accomplished.
This is After Hours with Amy Lawrence. Music. The voice of Shawn Grandy final call of the Celtics historic run this season through the NBA and then into the playoffs. Sixteen and three record winning these NBA finals and the Larry O'Brien trophy in five games. And man they've had fun since then. I'm not sure if you heard us talking about their brief trip to Miami. I guess it didn't last much longer than 24 hours. Probably a lot of them did not sleep while they were in Miami.
Just slept on the plane down and the plane back. Joe Mazzola has had the O'Brien trophy all over Boston. So this is kind of fun.
I'm not sure if you've seen the photos or the stories. He has essentially taken the trophy out into the street so that fans can touch it. So he had time with it. He's walked it all over Boston so that fans can get up close and personal, take photos. I mean it's hot in Boston this week and he's out there with his shorts and his t-shirt and he's just kicking it. Waiting for the duck boat parade on Friday and trotting the trophy around so that the fans can really appreciate it. And I've also seen videos of Jason Tatum in a bar back in Boston buying shots for everyone.
And so they're living their best lives right now. I think it's fantastic that they're back in Boston and that the fans are getting a chance to interact. So it was a fan video that I saw in which he's buying drinks for this, I have no idea what bar. But he's buying drinks for this bar and the guy who's taking the video, you can clearly see Jason standing maybe 15 feet from him. And he yells, Jason!
He's yelling something crazy and Jason kind of nods and just smiles at him. Right now, I feel like you encounter any of these guys and they're still on cloud nine and they haven't even had the duck boat parade which is coming up on Friday. There's actually a picture circulating right now of Jalen Brown.
He brought his finals MVP trophy to the casino. Have you seen this one? I haven't. Oh yeah. Whistle has it.
Okay. There he is just gambling with the trophy right next to him on the table. So we've taken Larry O'Brien for a walk and a stroll through Boston, taken him to Miami. Now he's at a casino enjoying his time as well with the Celtics. So yeah, pretty crazy. Thank you. Manny Rodriguez is with us.
So it's been a few days and still have not celebrated with the duck boat. Producer Jay just made a face. What did you see online? I'm not sure which photo Manny showed you of Jalen Brown, but it was the one that says with the caption, we're feeling lucky tonight. Well, I don't. There's another one. There is. There's another one where he's gambling with the finals MVP trophy.
There's one he's at a roulette table and it says on the bottom 643 a.m. Oh yes, yes, yes. I do see that now. Nice. Nice little time stamp there.
I don't think it matters. Oh my gosh. Time standing still for Jalen Brown, the NBA finals MVP and for Jason Tatum. And I mean, the photos, their joy. They've earned it. Honestly, think about how long they've been playing basketball. Forget the heartbreak and the failures, the near misses of the last few years. How about just starting your training camp in October?
Right. You're working out before that. You play an 82 game regular season.
It includes travels, crisscrossing the country. You're barely home, for heaven's sakes. Then you have to go through two months of playoffs. But you also have to sit around for about four or five days in between every series because you're closing out your series quickly.
It's a lot mentally, physically. You have to stay ready. They've got to stay focused.
They earned it. I think it's great that the victory parade isn't until Friday. Probably going to be one of the hottest days of the year in Boston. They canceled schools, I heard.
Yeah, no doubt. For the Heat Advisory Index. Although, I kind of feel like schools should almost be out, even in the Boston area.
Close. Yeah, why not? Just chuck the last day of school. They're expecting over a million people in the streets of Boston. Let's be honest, it's not been that long since they've had a ticker tape parade.
Right? So, they've definitely been, they've become veterans at this in Boston. But for the Celtics, it's the first time in 16 years and I'm excited for them.
Our friend Sean Grandy, who does the play-by-play, actually has called now a second NBA championship for the Celtics because he's been with them 23 years. He has told me he's taking his young son. They'll be on a duck boat, I believe.
They're part of the parade. And we've, well, he's promised, but I've told him we'll be asking him about the experience from that perspective coming up next week sometime. So, yeah, pretty exciting there. Of course, we haven't yet finished up the Stanley Cup final, so we'll do a bit of a preview later. What else is going on in the wake of the U.S. Open? Most of the golf world is now at Cromwell, or at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut. Jon Rahm had a really, I think, intriguing perspective on Rory McIlroy and the two missed putts.
The one that he rimmed out specifically on 18. He's got his own perspective about why, if you haven't been there and done that, you really shouldn't be criticizing. We've got Trevor Lawrence talking for the first time about his massive contract that will pay him $55 million per season. Oh, and did you know that Tom Brady has already made his broadcast debut?
He got booed. What is wrong with people? Sorry. What is your favorite summer activity, Manny Rodriguez? My favorite summer activity? Don't say gambling.
No, no, I'm just teasing. You can do that any year, anytime of the year, I guess. Honestly, just kind of sitting around with the boys near the pool, kind of near a bonfire, maybe having a couple of beers.
That sounds like heaven to me. Yeah, the laid-back pace of summer is always really cool. So we're asking those of you who are listening, we're getting some great responses, also some responses to this whole Lakers dilemma. They wanted Dan Hurley, they end up with J.J. Redick, so I still don't get that. Anyway, online at ALaw Radio or our Facebook page named after the show, what's your favorite summer activity?
And also, if you want to weigh in on the Lakers and their choices. I'm sorry, I find it amusing myself. I'll just go laugh by myself in the corner. You are listening to the After Hours.
