I promise the video before I hit vacation, before I get in my car and Princess Leia and I begin the road trip, you will have a video of Yoda. He's green. He yodels. He's the new mascot because Bob doesn't really want to be a mascot. Actually, I told him.

Did I mention lovable mascot? It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. Thanks so much for hanging out with us. It is always good to put Monday in the rearview mirror two and a half hours of yard work on Monday afternoon since I am leaving town on Tuesday. And most of the muscles in my midsection are screaming at me, which is alright. Mowed the lawn, weeded, did all kinds of trimming. I feel very accomplished.

And then and then had to make a coconut cream pie after that. Haven't packed yet. Why would I pack?

It's not like I'm leaving in 11 hours or anything like that. So we'll talk more about the pie because you've got to hear about this new recipe and we'll get back to some of the other cool storylines in baseball. Mentioned the Giants, but how about the Marlins too? And also Mad Max Scherzer might be back, like actually back, back for real. But the hottest team in the game is the Cincinnati Reds.

They have surged to the top of the NL Central. Diaz home with the 1-0 pitch. Swing and a ground ball to short. Up with it, De La Cruz.

The play to first and that's it. Reds win it five to four, make it nine straight for the Redlegs. What a comeback by Alexis Diaz when he had to have it. The Reds do it again. They come from behind and win another one.

Hello first place, you never looked so good. On Reds radio and what did manager David Bell say after the game? Things are starting to feel special in Cincinnati at the Great American Ballpark. We're going to spend some time in Cincinnati welcoming Trent Rosecrance who covers the team for the athletic.

Well we'll just start with the easy question, Trent. What has gotten into the Cincinnati Reds? You know this is what this team and Nick Kral, the general manager, has been trying to build towards the last couple years and this was supposed to kind of be one of those bridge years and hope to, you know, get the young guys some experience and up here this year and used to being in the big leagues and maybe go for it in 24 but those guys had different ideas. I mean Ellie De La Cruz, Matt McLean, Spencer Spear, they're all rookies but they don't look like rookies and this is a team that just is entertaining. They run a lot, they're really fast and athletic and they're just relentless on the bases and that's been kind of their MO this year. They're a team that is aggressive, plays aggressive and scores some runs. Where do you think they get the wisdom maybe that goes beyond their years, some of these young guys?

You know I think it's just kind of their makeup. I mean Matt McLean is just a solid no-nonsense player. Ellie De La Cruz is maybe the, you know, right up there with the oldest Chapman is the most talented athletic player I've ever covered.

He's also a very smart and unselfish player which is really exciting and then Spencer Steir is just steady and you don't like really notice him but then you look at his numbers and you're like oh this guy can play. Really it's almost like this entire team plays like Jonathan India and you know one rookie of the year two years ago dealt with injuries last year but India's not the flashiest player but he's a hard-nosed player and you know they joke that he's the captain of this team and for good reason because he plays like that and everybody plays like Jonathan India and if everybody plays like Jonathan India they're going to be playing hard and they may not win every game but there's going to be no questioning the effort. So with the nine game win streak they have actually catapulted themselves to the top of the NL Central. Not sure how long you've covered the Reds but it's been a while since anyone could say that.

Yeah like they're longer than 31 games. I just looked this up they were after 31 games I think in 2017 they were in first place but it has been since 2012 beyond that and 2012 I was around that was a really really good team won 96 games Johnny Quato doesn't get hurt in the playoffs I really think they had a great chance at winning the World Series that year. The excitement over Joey Votto returning it's great that he's still playing I think he's such a fun quirky addition to any clubhouse to have him return to the Reds with the home run and the three RBI what was the excitement level like there at the ballpark? It was beyond anything I've seen in a long time it really was you know and even Joey said he was a little surprised he got a curtain call he had several like you know he had a standing o when he took the field in the top of the first uh another one in the in the bottom of the second and give a lot of credit to both Rockies catcher live Diaz and the and the umpire for recognizing that moment and letting it happen and then in the home run it was just ambushed and the thing is like you're talking talking to the players other players in the in the clubhouse afterwards they're just like his swing was there like they could tell that he was locked in early and he's a Hall of Fame player and you know I've covered Joey since well I guess the 2006 futures game in Pittsburgh and so I've known Joey since then and covered Joey since then you just never know with Joey that's the thing it's like you could tell me anything about the guy and I believe it and every time I start to doubt him he he proves me wrong and he proves a lot of people wrong Trent Rosecrans is with us from Cincinnati after the Reds extend their win streak to nine games now in first place in the NL central with this surge that they're on it's after hours here on CBS sports radio so I saw a quote from Joey in which he mentioned that was a long time coming referring to the rehab did he ever have any doubts that he'd be able to get back to this point considering that he's nearly 40 years old yeah I mean he he said he did he had he had a hit a lot but I was talking to him after the game and I was like you know that first at bat smoked it um he did it's like his first at bat he lined out on the second pitch assaults 104-4 off the bat and he was just like yeah I thought about just giving up like if that's not gonna fall what's gonna happen wow and I was like and I was just like Joey come on he's like no I'm serious no he's like yeah and then the next time he hit a home run so he felt okay at 102 and that was the softest hit of the game batted ball of the game what about Joey what would his role be on a day-to-day basis like I asked Jonathan India that and I just said you know there's such a great vibe with this team and that's such a big part of this team right now you know there's some of the questions even myself like would Joey mess with that he goes no man Joey creates this and it is something that he has done since spring he was in charge of so much of the the team bonding experiences even though he was rehabbing and he wasn't in there every day uh he's been here when he's not in Louisville rehabbing he's been here and then when he was in Louisville rehabbing he would he would keep in touch with players and and kind of like text them he said he was watching every game and and he just felt a part of this team and I don't I think this team feels like he's part of them too and and it just this is the first time he's been able to contribute on the field but it's not the first time he's contributed to this do they call him dad or grandpa no he's just Joe um he's uh he's one of a kind um but he is I think like Kurt Casale is like 34 and he might be the closest player in age wow um and you know we're talking about Ellie De La Cruz who's 21 yep I didn't even look at how old Ellie was when I mean I guess I could do the math pretty quickly but when Joey debuted in 2007 um which is funny his who was his second at bat as a big leaguer is actually in the second game because he pinch hit in the first game his first start he homeward in his first at bat um so his first hit as a big leaguer was a homer and he talked today about how he felt like he was a rookie again coming up and once again his first hit was a home run I feel like every winning team has someone who can offer some experience and and Joey is so unique as you point out he's got a great sense of humor doesn't take himself too seriously and really loves the game of baseball fits right in with this group then he also takes some of the the pressure off some of these young guys Ellie De La Cruz is sitting there waiting he's expecting to be talked to after every game and and he doesn't have to carry that anymore Matt McLean is the guy that doesn't have to carry that there's Joey you know Joey can take some of that he's been there he is the future hall of famer so like there is some clout that he has and he can take that off of other players and and he realizes that more than anybody I've been around we're excited to talk Reds with Trent Rosecrans who's covering the Reds for the athletic and is joining us now after their ninth consecutive win it's after hours here on CBS Sports Radio it's one thing to sweep the Royals it's entirely another to sweep the Astros in Houston how significant for the Reds to have that experience yeah I think it's good I mean heck they're uh 6-0 against teams from Texas they swept the Rangers earlier this year too at the early part so I mean you're talking two pretty good teams there they also won two or three in in St. Louis which the Cardinals aren't playing well but this team has struggled I mean the Cardinals have kind of been the team that everybody in this division has looked at for many years and to go in there and just beat them up and feel like they even let one go there much less you know that they they didn't perform their best and they still won two or three that's a big thing they've played really well they've played some good teams not so good teams but you should sweep the Royals and then when you do sweep the Astros it means a little more how many people out there can name the starting rotation for the Cincinnati Reds well quite honestly with Hunter Green going on the uh IL today I'm struggling doing that but I mean you know it's funny because at the start of the year the prevailing thought was well those top three young guys who were rookies last year and Hunter Green, Nick Lidolo and Graham Ashcraft are as good as anybody in the division's top three and they should have some decent starting pitching but where's the offense going to come from and the bullpen's question well it's kind of flipped all three of those guys are currently on the IL the bullpen has been a strength and the offense has really turned it on. So then what is the atmosphere like at the Great American Ballpark now that they're home to start this stand how are the fans reacting? There's an excitement about this team that I haven't felt maybe since 12.

Wow. Maybe even 10 yeah um I think because they there's a looking at it on the field they're a fun brand of baseball um and they've come back they've come from behind 24 times already this year uh you know you can kind of a cliche to say well we're never out of it and we we grind and we're always you know never give up kind of thing and even earlier in the season they kept saying that and I said well don't you have to win at some point you know does that just become platitude yeah and then that's what they've started doing and it's been fun to watch I think you know you have to give a lot of credit to two guys who have been maligned over the last couple years and manager David Bell for helping create that that chemistry that culture and Nick Kral the general manager who is they were they sold last year and it wasn't easy for anybody but when you get back to the likes of Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion Strands coming soon just some of the guys that they've got Nick Kral's done one heck of a job. Something that impresses me as I've watched them play recently of course and winning is fun but they always seem to be engaged so standing up on the top step right behind the railing celebrating every little thing the giant smiles on their faces too they enjoy each other and that's the thing it's like a funny thing like you know you could you could look at someone like Matt McLean um a first round pick in 2021 um shortstop you know that's supposed to be the guy um college all-american supposed to be the guy well out of nowhere comes this prospect Ellie De La Cruz and even last year once Ellie got moved up to double-a and they're planning into double-a together they're switching off who plays shortstop every day. Shortstops don't like to play other places but shortstop like there's a mentality to shortstop but these two guys it didn't matter they are thick as thieves and I even asked Matt last year and then I've noticed said it again this year it's like you know a lot of guys would feel threatened or whatever he's like no man it's just Ellie he loves to play the game we love playing together we're going to be good together for a long time I don't care where either one of us is playing we're going to be good and I we're going to be good and that's going through and this is the whole team um you see a lot of people moving around a lot of different parts Spencer Steir started in left field today um he'll probably play more left field and outfield something that he's never really done before but he's going to do that Nick Conzel played in right field started in right field this is just the second time he's played right field as a as a pro um he's played all three outfield spots he's played third base and second base this year I mean these are guys who just want to win a lot of teams say that this team's actions back that up before I let you go Trent Rosecrans is with us from Cincinnati what are your impressions of the central which the Reds now lead oh it's terrible I mean both central's are bad they are I mean there's there's no other thing you can say and the Reds are playing really well in a very winnable division and I mean we're joking about it like you could get to the playoff time where because of the current format they have to play a team with a much better record than them but it would be here so you know this is it's it's a that's why you don't just say well this is a good start and hopefully through the next couple years we can develop no you say hey this this is a team that can make the playoffs this year and and part of that is being young and good and talented and part of that is playing in this division having a division that's wide open why not the Reds and now they are sitting on top of the central by a half game over Milwaukee pretty impressive all right so you can find Trent on Twitter at C Trent and it's Trent Rosecrans who covers the Reds for the athletic is there in Cincinnati great American ballpark is rocking what a cool story thank you so much for a couple of minutes this was fun no problem any time we had talked about the NL central a bunch with the Pirates being on top of the division for a good chunk of the early stages of the season now they're backpedaling a bit doesn't mean they can't interrupt this free-for-all free free it's not what I meant to say this free fall is what I meant to say came out the wrong way they've lost seven in a row and they've lost eight of their last ten so the Pirates backpedaling has allowed the Brewers and now the Reds some space atop the central division but remember the Cubs had also put together a five-game win streak and they've been playing much better baseball overall eight of ten wins for them they're getting closer to 500 and only three and a half games out so yeah the top two teams in the NL central are the only two teams that are above 500 Reds and Brewers separated by a half a game but no one else is really out of it even the Cardinals they're 13 games below 500 and they're only eight games out so when Trent says the division is bad that's that's an accurate assessment but you could also say it's wide open and we've talked about the NFC North this way with Aaron Rodgers departing the Lions playing so well last year the Vikings making a bunch of changes and now losing Dalvin Cook the Bears there's a lot of energy and I would say some higher expectations around the Bears this season see was it season two of Matt Eberfluse and so for that reason the NFC North is wide open somebody's got to win it oh like the NFC South somebody's got to win it for years we said that about the NFC East but they are the least no longer beast in the East I don't know what's happening to me on Twitter a law radio we're gonna do coming up Oh Chris Paul on how he found out that he was getting traded to Washington CP3 goes to Washington it's After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports brings the ball up into the front court ball drives down the left side comes across the lane has a 14-footer good if it goes it's gone chris missed those shots in the first game that high pick going left back to the right side of the lane makes that mid-range jump shot this is after hours with amy lawrence on phoenix sun's radio because that was the last stop for chris paul in the nba but it may be done this is such a strange twist to chris paul's career not that the last few years have been anything average or routine to be fair he's gone through a lot i was thinking about this recently don't ask me why whose career arc had more twists and turns or was stranger the last say five years russell westbrook or chris paul and there's our intertwined paths as well yeah here's chris paul who is now 38 years old just turned 38 last month had another fantastic season averaging 14 points nine assists four rebounds still shooting 83 at the free throw line right still shooting 44 from the field which is pretty good he actually has a mid-range jumper he is a future hall of famer what he lacks is a ring and he desperately wants to win one he's a guy who can rub other players the wrong way because he's got a very specific style of leadership he can be abrasive there were there were reports guess rumors that he and james hardin clashed in houston but for heaven's sakes who doesn't clash with james hardin but if you think about where he's been he makes his team better and it's certainly not fair to put it all on him that he's never played in an nba finals that's just dumb the fact that he's injured at the worst possible time though that seems to be a recurring theme later in his career so here is chris paul most recently of the phoenix sons for the last three seasons he was a year in okc before that houston before that the clippers before that do you guys remember way back when the league put the kibosh on a proposed trade that would have sent cp3 from new orleans they were the hornets then to the lakers and the league who was at the time running the hornets or running the new orleans franchise new orleans franchise said nah people are still mad about it it's after hours here on cbs sports radio i'm not sure if chris paul's mad but it's clear that he was using great self-control in good morning america as he's joining michael strahan and company i'm driving this morning and we have the ticker tape thing outside of our building and i see this potential blockbuster deal between you and bradley bill that may take you from phoenix to washington and vice versa i was surprised what are your first thoughts on that i was surprised too i found out on the plane yesterday flying here for this you know it's in this league anything can happen so you just figure out what's next you literally found out on the plane absolutely wow what's happening hmm so chris paul not taking any bait not gonna get angry but he did admit that he was surprised by the trade so that's good morning america he found out when he's on an airplane and not from his team he does an interview then with the new york times that was published monday in which he admitted he was surprised and guess how he found out not from his team on a plane but a text from his son i i i mean i guess it's better to hear from your son than to hear from some random fan on social media but come on shouldn't the team be breaking the news to players when there's a a trade in the offing or a trade in the works it always bothers me it's a little bit like ghosting this i don't know recent trend when it comes to dating or social media whatever people just disappear without a trace it it bothers me so much whether it's personal or professional it's happened to me in my professional career too having a conversation with a particular colleague or maybe it's over a job and boom person drops off the face of the earth it's just rude and it's rude in this scenario too it's not quite the same thing but if you don't hear anything from your team your team is radio silent in this case we know that the sons had considered releasing chris allowing him to become a free agent instead he gets flipped to washington now chris paul also told the new york times this is interesting it's his impression so we don't know if there's truth to it but he said he believes that isaiah thomas who's the hall of famer going back to his pistons days he's part of the bad boys not the more recent isaiah thomas who played for the celtics and lakers and trying to think who else anyway isaiah thomas the hall of famer the former detroit piston legend he's good friends with the new owner of the sons chris believes that isaiah had something to do with this so that was his implication to the new york times and he said it's tough it's a part of the business and what you realize is that no one owes you anything no matter how you are with them or what you do you realize that in this business nobody owes you anything as it should be so he may not love it or love the way he found out but he recognizes this is the way of of pro sport he goes on to say though and again this is from the new york times when it comes through and my son texts me i realize that matt and isaiah matt meaning matt ishbia and isaiah just wanted to go in a different direction so he's the one that pointed to isaiah thomas the relationship with the son's new owner and indicates that he found out on a plane through a text from his son again it's better than finding out from a random fan on social media but it's still not professional and also when i said he hadn't played in the nba finals obviously i meant he hadn't won an nba finals so forgive me for that there's a misspeak on my part misspeak on my part when they're with the sons came close but it seems as though every single time he gets closer he's on the cusp or a team that he's with is on the cusp happened with houston he's injured when the team needs him most 59 starts for the sun's last year and i mentioned his numbers can still play keeps himself in good shape with the nba finals appearance to come so close so close so close and not be able to realize that dream still fuels him you may remember actually after that nba finals the questions immediately started immediately are you retiring and i remember how defiant he was i'm not retiring i'm not done i still have something to play for i'm not going anywhere and then has been with the sun since then but still i mean phoenix this year didn't have him at the end of the playoffs got smoked at home in game six by the denver nuggets of their series anyway so yeah tantalizingly close for chris paul still unable to have a ring and i can't imagine he puts washington over the top and he may not stay there right he may end up somewhere else because the talk was that potentially they would rope in the third team who would be a contender so you can hear that he's disgruntled thinks it's unprofessional but understands that it's a business he's seen it time and time again in fact he's lived it time and time again he was on good morning america promoting a new book called 61 life lessons from his grandfather on and off the court he's smart guy i really enjoy hearing him talk i enjoy his wisdom and experience and i do think that there'd be a lot of people like i said with ricky fowler over the weekend right there'd be a lot of people who would be thrilled who would be thrilled for him should he finally win a ring 39th year is he the tom brady well he's been more injured than tom brady but no the tom brady of the nba coming up next we told you that windham clark us open champion was ranked nearly 300th in the world a year ago well with the open victory he are listening to the after hours podcast this is now my second win um on pj tour and first one was surreal and this one's surreal so you know it hasn't quite hit me yet walking up 18 was pretty emotional and then finishing um but yeah it's uh it's been a whirlwind of the last five six weeks it's been i'm just so blessed and humbled to be here this is after hours with amy lawrence windham clark the ultimate cinderella story in golf at the us open this really is supposed to be america's championship and i can imagine the usga is less than pleased not with the outcome but with the scoring uh you know the usga prides itself on making the open more challenging the association would really prefer to have just a handful of golfers who are in red numbers and what's the brand essentially of the us open it's a struggle deep rough even the first cut of rough can be punishing the bunkers that are challenging and have the crazy lips and actually rory mcelroy rory mcelroy knows this well right he benefited from a newer rule in golf where you get relief from being embedded on the side of a sand trap if it's not in the sand you can get relief from it and his ball was buried in some grass on the side of a sand trap the second half back half of his final round but the deep the deep rough the deep sand bunkers that are not easy outs and then typically lightning fast greens it just didn't work out that way and there was a lot of scoring we had record numbers in the opening round and ultimately the winner finishes minus 10 and that's windham clark i told you this last night but it blows me away a year ago he was ranked closer to 300 than he was to 250 in the world golf rankings he was 293rd before last year's us open he'd never made the cut at the us open before this year he'd only started seven majors meaning he'd only qualified for seven majors including last weekend's us open even though he's been on the tour a while well he only recently grabbed his first win at the wells fargo five weeks ago and then was very competitive at the memorial so this is the stat that i i read yesterday that kind of blew me away imagine it will for you too if you haven't heard it he's only got two wins in his entire career two wins but for those two wins 7.2 million dollars and in the past six weeks he's made more than 8 million whoa in the past six weeks of work windham clark has earned 8 million dollars so guess where he sits now in the world rankings it's after hours with amy lawrence here on cbs sports radio windham clark is lucky 13 in the official world golf rankings that came out on monday and he is nipping at the heels of brooks kepka so he is right there but a year ago closer to 300 than to 250 my gosh life comes at you fast windham clark what a great story i really do love this and and you know me i talk about fresh blood all the time when it comes to team sports and playoffs i love the denver nuggets element this year's nba champion i think it's great even though the golden knights haven't been a franchise for very long they're a first time winner the stanley cup windham clark he's a bigger cinderella story than anything you've seen since march madness this side of march madness and we're going to assume that he did not go fishing on monday i'm thinking as the us open champion he probably had media responsibilities he had to travel blah blah blah but on the pga tour twitter it's clear that people want you to the social media team of the pga wants you to get to know your us open champion a little bit better so did you know windham clark is a big time fisherman when i'm out here fishing there's something spiritual about being in a beautiful place like this in the water sometimes you just stop and you just look around you're just like wow i'm so fortunate those are the times i think about my mom sometimes you can get into a trance where you're kind of just reflecting on certain things in life the music and all of that comes from pga tour twitter but it's something new about windham clark away from the golf course his mom the story of his mom is incredible and i didn't know any of this i didn't know much at all about windham clark before the weekend got to know him a lot better watching the us open that's for sure his mom lived in la for a while she was a miss usa contestant and married a former pro tennis player who is windham's dad they moved to denver before windham was born so he is a denver native himself kind of continuing that string of champions for the denver area it was his mom who introduced him to golf it was his mom who encouraged him to play who really pushed him but also was his biggest fan his biggest supporter and when he was in college playing golf at oklahoma state his mom faced her second diagnosis of breast cancer but at that point it had metastasized and there was nothing the doctors could do and she passed away pretty quickly maybe mercifully people were coming up to him in la and showing him photos of his mom that he'd never seen before and so he said he knew she was with him and you hear him mention her there on pga tour twitter on pga tour twitter actually using fishing as a way to connect and get away and get this fishing maybe gives it more of a thrill than teeing it up i usually can't sleep a night before fishing what it's actually probably worse than a night before a final round of a tournament when you have a chance to win fishing i get so excited because it's it's like i know i'm gonna go do what i love i always wake up it seems about an hour before my alarm clock goes off and usually i leave early because i'm like i'm not gonna wait around i just want to get up there now see if it were me and i looked at fishing as a way to get away i'm not sure that i would be so excited that i couldn't sleep although you know what sometimes the night before vacation i can't really sleep because i'm excited uh i would say mostly because i'm excited and i still have to pack that's me i always back at the absolute last second and that's no different than what will happen on tuesday morning all right i promised you the coconut cream pie recipe that i've tried for the first time i have not tried the pie so you're gonna have to tell me what you think plus a little more about draymond green it's after hours cbs sports radio summer is always the
