The United States was late to introduce government-funded package delivery, but by the 1880s and 1890s, it became a contentious issue in Congress. The introduction of parcel post delivery in 1913 allowed for the mailing of packages up to 11 pounds, but it also led to some bizarre instances, such as children being mailed through the postal service for cheaper than a train ticket. The Postmaster General eventually changed the regulations to prohibit mailing human beings, but it still occurred a few more times before the practice ended. [... more]
