Phyllis Wheatley, a young African American slave, was brought to America in 1761 and quickly demonstrated her intelligence and writing abilities. Despite being a slave, she was encouraged to learn and write by her owners, the Wheatleys, and went on to publish her first book of poetry, becoming the first African American poet to do so.
