The Philea Fish Sandwich was created by Lou Grone, a desperate franchise owner trying to make a little extra money catering to Catholics during Lent. He pitched the idea to Ray Kroc, who initially rejected it, but eventually allowed him to trial the sandwich. The sandwich became a huge success, selling 2,324 units in the first month alone, and was eventually added to the McDonald's menu, predating the Big Mac by about half a decade.
