She was born in 1760 in Plimpton, Massachusetts, and was sent to work as a maid at a young age. Despite being denied an education, she taught herself to read and write and eventually became a teacher and a weaver. She enlisted in George Washington's army in 1782 and served for two years, participating in several battles and earning the respect of her comrades.
