In October 1950, the Korean War took a dramatic turn when 24-year-old Jesse Leroy Brown, the US Navy's first black aviator, crash-landed behind enemy lines. His wingman, Thomas J. Hudner, risked his life to try and save him, but Brown succumbed to his injuries. Hudner's heroic actions were later recognized with the Medal of Honor, one of the most prestigious awards in the US military.
