If a red temperature light comes on, assume it's for real and pull over to let the engine cool off. Don't try to take the top off of the radiator of a hot engine, as this can cause a very hot bath. Instead, let the engine cool down and then check for low coolant levels. If the engine has run hot, it's best to have it towed to a repair shop. Regular engine maintenance, such as oil changes and checking for leaks, can help prevent engine damage and prolong the life of the vehicle.
