On July 18th, 1945, a US B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, killing 14 people and injuring 27. The accident was caused by pilot error, and the plane's fuel tanks ruptured, sending a sheet of flame into the building. Miraculously, elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver survived a 75-story fall, and her story of survival has become a legendary tale of human endurance.
