Psalm 89 begins by praising the faithfulness of our God, and one of the great promises of His faithfulness is that David’s line would be established through all generations. In fact, God goes so far as to say that He has made a covenant with His chosen one, and a covenant cannot be broken by a covenant-keeping God.

So maybe nine begins by praising the faithfulness of our God and one of the great promises of his faithfulness is that David's line would be established through all generations. In fact, God goes so far as to say that he is made a covenant with his chosen one and a covenant cannot be broken by a covenant keeping God to the Bible study our radio and Internet broadcast with Dr. James Boyce preparing you to think and act biblically. The terms of God's covenant with David included choosing him as king protecting him from his enemies making him prominent among the nations, and continuing God's blessings to his sons. Let's join Dr. voices he shows us from Psalm 89 the joy of having a God that is faithful in all things and at all times are as many attributes of God is are our names for God because that's what the names of God signify on their allotted language I have in my study somewhere a book in which one scholar has developed a devotional for each day of the year based on the different name of God. So there 365 different names. At least I'm not even sure that he has them all.

That means or must be that many attributes now that great number of attributes is probably not that is more important for officer means more to us in the living of our daily lives. In the faithfulness of God. God is faithful God were not faithful men and women really can't be counted upon we say something and then we go against what we say we make a promise we break it we want to rely on other people, but we show ourselves constantly to be people that can't be relied on ourselves on God's not like that on his absolutely faithful.

He has never made a promise that he hasn't captor will keep in his own time and he has never let his people down. Though there are times that he seems to do that now. That's what the song was all about. We have a him where we sing about the faithfulness of God is based on the verse in Lamentations 3.

Great is thy faithfulness all God my father.

There is no shadow of turning with a and that's what the song is developing into parts.

However, the first part longest part through verse 37 about six of the eight stanzas praises the faithfulness of God and since God is a faithful God and it asked him up in all sorts of ways. It deals a great length with the covenant God made with David in the second part, beginning with verse 38 says, but the moment God doesn't seem to be remember how I said we were looking at our Psalm last week. Psalm 88 that one of the refreshing things about placeholder is how honest these people who wrote these verses are you and I would be afraid to write that 88 saw Dr. so grimly about what the mystics called the dark night of the soul.

This man is so down. He doesn't see any bright light anywhere. We would tend not to do that, we think somehow that's wrong with somehow make it come out all right in the end, but the Psalm is not afraid to speak of things as I see them around the same thing in this, although it's not nearly as grim as the one the proceeds this writer's name is given there at the beginning Ethan the Ezra height is mentioned a couple places in the Bible looks out at the situation in his dynamics as it does not seem as I look at things today that God has been faithful to the covenant that he made with David so the first parts is great is your faithfulness in the second pass is where is your faithfulness. That's why you look at it when you look at two parts looking at the first part now as I sent this is based on the covenant God made with David in the certain sense.

This is a poetic exposition of that Old Testament story behind it and second Samuel the seventh chapter David Risha. In his career as king.

When the great battles of his youth were over there was peace round about him. He had time to reflect on things that might be done besides fighting battles. He looked at the policy was living in. He said this is right here I am living in a palace made of cedar so impressive building material and that day we would probably say ivory today and he said here I am. And yet the ark of God, the covenant still remains in the tempter was the wilderness Tabernacle tent and he share that with Nathan the prophet Nathan said to him to do whatever is in your heart to do what he had in mind, of course, was to build a great temple in Jerusalem that night God spoke to Nathan in the vision and God came to know him and Nathan came to David the next day and he said now this is what God says God says you have said in your heart. I'm in the build a house for God, but is going to be the other way around. Instead I'm going to build a house for David. What he meant by that was a dynasty. His weight as words go, I'm going to read a little bit from this seven chapter 2nd Samuel, because as we go through Psalm 89 you can find it is commenting on it by doing interesting study related to passages side-by-side to find the very phrases that appear in the historical book, also appearing in the song, but here's a selection of what nonsense.

This is what the Lord says you the one to build me a house. The dwelling or declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you when your days are over and you wrestle your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you will come from your own body and I will establish his kingdom is the one it will build a house for my name is talking about Solomon.

Of course I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever will be his father. He will be my son.

When he does wrong, I will punish them with a rod of men with logins inflicted by men. But my love will never be taken away from him as I took it away from Saul my removed before you your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me. Your throne will be established forever. That's a great Old Testament passage that tells of God's establishing this covenant with King David and establish his throne. Generation after generation. We know that was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Ultimately, the time of the song's almost didn't know that and the house of David was in the cave. Perhaps it was even overthrown those verses I read forever is the critical word to see your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me. Even David when he responded to that knew that that wasn't the sort of thing is possible for human beings and David recognizing had to be the Messiah. That's the key work and will endure forever.

Now that occurs in the song medevac. It occurs again and again find it interesting to go through the Psalm and underline it to find it eight times that word forever verses 1 to 428 2936 3748 sounds like the results of the lottery, but I'm not doing that all similarly, the word faithfulness should is dealing with the same thing and that's our theme here occurs seven times find it in verses 1 to 58 1433 and 39 and the word covenant which both of the other ideas. Comments found three times in verses 328 and 34. Now the theme of the Psalm is established in the first stanza I've given you the frequency of those words, but those words are there in the first stanza. Rev. occurs three times. Just they are faithfulness twice in the word covenant once not at this point I think the translation in the new international version loses something, at least for people who are familiar with that him that begins, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever member that may have son that we don't even have it in our hymnbook but people used to sing at reason I say that is that the word translated great love in verse one of the Psalm.

I will sing of the Lord's great love forever actually is a word mercies plural form may be a minor point, but I think that word mercies has two ideas that the translation great love Mrs. for one thing, it makes it tangible, rather than sort of an abstract attitude. God is loving toward us. This is talking about tangible mercies and then the second point that I think is missed by the translations is the plural be the fact that it's not just diversity but there are many, many mercies that we endure throughout our lives. Now that him great is thy faithfulness reflects that.

Remember there's a line in it again on the verse in Lamentations 3, from which the humans drive that says morning by morning new mercies I see and I guess the question at that point. What are those mercies that I see new morning by morning. That next verse goes on pardon for sin. We need again and again in the piece that endure find ourselves in turmoil from time to time but God gives peace by knowing their presence to cheer and to guide strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.
