VIVE! From the police show yet not overly ostentatious studios of the Infinity Sports Network here in beautiful New York City sitting on top of the 10th floor of 345 Hudson Street. Welcome on in to what is a Tuesday edition of the Zach Gelb show across all the great local Infinity Sports Network affiliates, Sirius XM, Channel 158, the free Odyssey app, and of course streaming live on YouTube. 855 212 42 27 is the number to jump on in.
That's 855 212 42 27. And you could always get at me on Instagram where I'm straight flexing or via the good old cesspool of Twitter at Zach Gelb. That's Z-A-C-H-G-E-L-B. I got Stuart Kovacs.
I got Manny Rodriguez rocking and rolling with me. We'll be here all the way up until 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 p.m. Pacific time. Let's get into the football game from last night. The San Francisco 49ers dominated the New York Jets by a final score of 32 to 19.
There's a lot of praise that shows the dominance of the San Francisco 49ers that we can get to and we will get to. But the story today is what the hell are the New York Jets? Now, I don't think the Jets are a great team. The Jets have a very good roster. Do I think last night is an indication of what this Jets season will be?
No, I do not. I think the Jets are going to be a playoff team this year. I think the Jets are going to win 10, maybe at most 11 games.
And I do anticipate Buffalo to win the division and the Jets to snatch up a wildcard spot. But I think you look at this game in two different ways and you look at it from a Jets offensive standpoint and then a Jets defensive standpoint. The highlight of the night, if you are a Jets fan or if you were watching this game and you're like, oh, what could I attribute being the most positive to the New York Jets was when Breece Hall had that touchdown. It was a three yard touchdown run and it put the Jets up seven to three.
And Aaron Rodgers converted a few third downs to Garrett Wilson. That was the highlight of the evening for the Jets. The problem is that came towards the end of the first quarter with about four minutes. It was like three fifties, something like that left in the first quarter.
That can't be the highlight of a game when there's still three other quarters to be played. And after that, the San Francisco 49ers just put on an absolute offensive clinic. Like offensively with the Jets, I didn't think they looked as bad as what the score indicated to be. Remember, Rodgers coming back hasn't taken a hit yet, did not play in the preseason. And Aaron Rodgers coming off an Achilles injury. You saw some glimpses, some flashes last night of, OK, we know what Aaron Rodgers is as a quarterback.
The offensive line for the Jets was fine. Garrett Wilson is going to be really damn good with Aaron Rodgers, and that's going to be the go to connection on third down. And I know every Jets fan can't stand Allen Lazard. Allen Lazard is going to be more of a positive than a negative for this team this year. Because if you know anything about Allen Lazard, he has always had the trust of Aaron Rodgers going back to his time with Aaron Rodgers, with the Green Bay Packers. And there was a reason and this is to pat myself on the back and quite frankly show you maybe my most degenerate sports gambling tweet ever.
This is back on March 14th. This is where my mind was at on March 14th when you had all this stuff about Aaron Rodgers maybe being vice president with RFK Jr. And I tweeted this out at 126 p.m. Eastern Time on March 14th in this year of 2024. Just as long as Aaron Rodgers is on the field week one and isn't focusing on trying to be the next VP of the USA. I'll be betting on an Allen Lazard week one anytime touchdown. You know the Jets general manager quarterback slash VP Aaron Rodgers is just going to find his guy.
And that's what happened last night. And shame on me because I should have bet for Allen Lazard to get in the end zone twice because he scored two touchdowns in the game last night. If I had to look at anything from the Jets offense and be extremely critical, I am a believer in Breece Hall. I think Breece Hall is going to be a very good back in this league. And we've seen it in instances with him putting it together last year for a full season.
And obviously he was well on his way to winning offensive rookie of the year and then got hurt in year one. But the Jets fan has gone out of their way to make it seem as if they have like the greatest running back of all time. And last night, Breece Hall did not get off to the best start of the season with the early fumble.
That just can't happen. So and when you're that far behind in the game, which the Jets were and you're playing catch up, you are going to limit the production of Breece Hall on the ground. But the Jets need Breece Hall to be a massive player for them.
Outside of Aaron Rodgers, I think you could make the case that the most valuable player for the Jets on the offensive side of the ball this year is actually going to be Breece Hall. Because with the age of Rodgers, with the injury that Rodgers is coming off of, and I fully expect Rodgers to be comeback player of the year this season, you're going to have to establish a run game. Not only to keep the defense honest, but if you have that threat of the run game, you even saw it last night, then you could use play action to really get the ball down the field. But having a good run game will prevent Aaron Rodgers from getting hit more.
And at his age, in his 40s, that's extremely valuable if you could have Breece Hall toting the rock night in and night out or game in and game out when the Jets do play. So offensively, I'm also wondering where the mobility of Rodgers is going to be. You see the command of the offense.
You see where he is at pre-snap. Even though the numbers don't suggest it was a good night for the Jets, I do think offensively, I don't walk away with any major concerns and any long-term panic with the Jets offense. In a weird way, I actually think last night was a good appetizer for the Jets on the offensive side of the ball, and I would be encouraged with the small parts that I saw on the Jets offensive side of the ball last night.
And let's also be real, too. The 49ers dominated, absolutely dominated the time of possession. So there's about seven minutes of praise for the Jets offense.
Now, let's get to the negative. The Jets defensive players will tell you they're the 85 Bears. The Jets defensive players will tell you they're the Legion of Boom. The Jets defensive players will tell you they're the early 2,000 Ravens. The Jets defensive players and their fans will tell you that they are the steel curtain, for crying out loud. This Jets defense isn't as bad as they displayed last night, but can we stop with this nonsense that this is an all-time great defense and that this is like the greatest defense we've ever seen? This is a good Jets defense. Last night, though, they were absolutely embarrassing. And it starts with the head coach, it starts with Sauce Gardner, it starts with Quinnen Williams, it starts with Quincy Williams, who I like a lot.
Right? There's a lot of good Jets defensive players, but the Jets last night on defense, CJ Mosley, absolute no-show. You allow Jordan Mason, you get a gift, surprise, surprise, run CMC Christian McCaffrey inactive for the game. And you allow Jordan Mason, who? To go for 147 rushing yards?
I'm sorry, folks. Don't tell me that this is the greatest defense in the league and one of the all-time great defense when you allow Jordan Mason to basically put up 150 yards against you. And also, I get it, the 49ers are a great team.
They were in the Super Bowl last year, NFC champs. But for this great Jets defense to allow 401 total yards is a disgrace. And also, the 49ers converted at 46% on third down. This Jets defense, they got to pick up their jockstraps, and they better play a flawless game up against Tennessee.
Now they should, because Will Levitz stinks. But my oh my, that was a horrible, and I mean a horrible performance by the Jets defense last night. Offensively, they were fine. I'm encouraged by the Jets offense. But this defense, you can't tell me that this defense is great and up against a great team in the San Francisco 49ers have that embarrassing and pathetic and putrid performance on the defensive side of the ball that the Jets displayed.
And it starts with you, Robert Sala, because your ass is on the hop seat this year, and you're a defensive-minded coach, and your defense was dog bleep last night. That defensive performance for what the Jets think they are on defense was an absolute and complete and utter embarrassment and a disgrace. I'm telling you, that defensive performance last night, I don't want to hear any Jet fam, any Jet player, any Jet coach tell me how great the defense is. It's a good defense. Last night they played horribly, but you can't tell me that this is a great defense and you compare it to some of the great defenses that we've ever seen in NFL history.
So long story short, I'll ask you this simple question. Where are the Jets heading to this season? What do you expect the Jets to be? Even with how brutal and how lethargic and how putrid the defense was last night, I still believe that the Jets have a good but not a great defense. I still believe the Jets have a good but not great team.
I think the offensive line is improved in a big way if they could stay healthy. Breece Hall is going to bounce back. Garrett Wilson is going to be good. You barely saw anything of Mike Williams last night.
Allen Lazard had two touchdowns. And you still have your quarterback at Aaron Rodgers. The Jets are going to be in the playoff mix. The Jets will be in the mix to win the AFC East. Like I said, ultimately I believe it will be Buffalo and the Jets should be a playoff team this year. But I'm not going to sit here and I know some Jet fans are thinking Super Bowl and they have every right to think it and say it because that fan base finally has something promising to look forward to and they're actually optimistic heading into a season. And we know that it's been a long, long time since the Jets have won a Super Bowl or even been in a Super Bowl.
Super Bowl three. So I understand the Jet optimism, but any Jet fan that believes that they're going to a Super Bowl this year, I'm not going there. Kansas City's better. The Bills are better. Just for starters, I think the Texans are better as well.
Those are just three teams right off the top of my head. And last night is a reminder, even though I still think the Jets are going to be a wild card team, how much work the Jets have to do. And the Jets, they got a test last night with the San Francisco 49ers who we know it's Super Bowl or bust for them. And the Niners are a great team.
And I don't use that word great very freely on this show. But the 49ers, they are a great team. And you went up against the 49ers without their best offensive playmaker and Christian McCaffrey. And you could have put whoever at running back last night.
Jordan Mason was the right. It doesn't matter who you put at running back last night. That running back was having success because the Niners offensive line is dominant. Brock Purdy is a better quarterback than what people give him credit for. Even after Brandon Aiyuk drops the ball. We all know how good of a wide receiver he is. We know how awesome and how dynamic Debo Samuel is. Kittles a really solid player. As we know, that's a complete team. And hey, if you took Garrett Wilson off the Jets, you're not plugging in any wide receiver last night that goes and has like this great performance for the for the Jets. You take Christian McCaffrey off the 49ers and always running back and I throw out a wide receiver.
They just plug and play and it doesn't matter. And you saw a big difference last night. Sure, the Niners are a great team.
I think the Jets are just a good team. But the biggest difference you saw is in the coaching. Robert Salah, your defense can't look that way when you are a defensive minded coach and the offensive minded coach. I saw Salah running up and down the steps before, you know, in the stadium for the game. Well, Kyle Shannon on the field ran circles around you.
He ran circles around you. Even without McCaffrey. And that's the part to me where if I'm a Jet fan, which I'm not, that's where I'd be irate today. It's not with the offense. It's the defense, because the defense is supposed to be ready to go. The defense is supposed to be the bread and butter. The defense is supposed to be the great part of this team. And that defense last night was laughable. And it starts with Robert Salah, the defensive minded head coach. You know, I didn't I said going into this year, I wasn't going to trash Salah a lot.
I thought he was a concern, but I thought most of this was on Aaron Rodgers. But last night you see why it's on Salah at times, because the defense can't play like that up against a great team. And that's why the game wasn't close last night.
8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. But a big thank you, by the way, to Allen Lazard for getting the end zone last night after a terrible gambling start to the season. I had a breeze hole anytime touchdown that had Allen Lazard. Lazard was at plus 50. So we basically wiped away all the losses from college football in week one.
And then we also wiped away all the NFL losses in week one as well. So there's a positive for the Jets. Allen Lazard, baby.
You got to love it. Manny, let me get your thoughts here. The Jets this year finished the sentence. The Jets this year will do what? What are the Jets going to do this year? I mean, they will absolutely go into the playoffs and give the Jets fan a memorable season. However, like you said, I mean, Kansas City is better.
I think Baltimore is better. They get a deep run, but I don't think they're winning the Super Bowl. Oh, you think they're still going deep run?
I still think so, yeah. How far are you willing to go? Because I don't think this team's got into an AFC championship game. At most, I see them winning one playoff game and being in the divisional round. I'd have to agree with you.
Okay. Stu, Jets are going to do what this year in your opinion? Miss the playoffs barely.
Wow. They're going to win nine or ten games and miss the playoffs. Which is not crazy because I went into this season saying Miami's going to win nine or ten games and miss the playoffs. You're splitting hairs inside the AFC East, really, between the Dolphins, the Bills and the Jets, with how deep the AFC is, with the Dolphins, the Bills, the Jets, and everyone in the AFC North. AFC South, you got some good teams in there too, starting with the Texans.
Crowded. You know, you got the Colts, you got the Jaguars. Kansas City we know is the standard and the Chargers. I don't know how good the Chargers are going to be, but we know they have two bookend tackles.
We know they can run the football, and we know Justin Herbert is a really solid quarterback. So this is a deep AFC, but can you imagine if the Jets go nine and eight, ten and seven, and miss the playoffs? For where the Jets are and how limited of a time frame Rogers has, maybe one more year after this, at most you would think, whoo, that would be a failure and a big time disappointment for the Jets. But let's be real, the Jets for most of my life have been a failure and a big time disappointment. I will say I was watching the game last night with my best friend, and all offseason long my best friend was telling me, because for 20 years I was able to just basically punch down on him. And now he was trying to punch back, oh, the Jets are going to have this great season, wonderful season.
And at the end of the game I looked at him, I go, where have we been our entire friendship? The Patriots 1-0, and the Jets 0-1. Patriots succeeding, Jets failing.
Oh, all is right in the world. 18 after the hour, this is Zach Gelb's show on the Infinity Sports Network. Where's your level of concern with the Jets? What do you think the Jets are going to do this year?
8-5-5, 2-1-2, 42-27. We'll take a time out when we come on back on the Zach Gelb show, give you my thoughts to this entire situation involving Tyreek Hill. Alrighty, this is Zach Gelb's show on the Infinity Sports Network. We all saw what happened on Sunday with Tyreek Hill as he was heading to the stadium, and he was right outside the stadium, and he ended up getting detained by a police officer. And we saw the videos of Tyreek Hill lying face down on the ground with the police officer on top of him.
And eventually he was released and made his way to the stadium and had a great come-from-behind performance as the Jaguars choked that game and Tyreek Hill took advantage and ended up having a big day on the field for one Tyreek Hill which we're all accustomed to. So yesterday the body cam footage was released and there's audio with it as well. These are definitely sensitive conversations that we have in regards to this. I think they are important. Let me just say this right out of the gate, because I think when we have these conversations, people generalize a lot and it's one side or the other. I think both parties are in the wrong here. Now I don't think it should have escalated to the point that it did. Let me be abundantly clear on that. Tyreek Hill, though, wasn't 110% innocent as well.
And we will get to that in just a second. But when I have this conversation, I think it is important to realize that you could criticize the police and you could also acknowledge that they're, like in many other jobs and many other lines of work, many great employees and the majority are great employees and then there are some bad employees. Now the difference with being a police officer is, for example, that's a lot more of a serious responsibility than, like, let's say an hour company where you have a lot of great employees and then you have some bad eggs.
Like Manny Rodriguez, you know, a bad egg here or there. But all kidding aside here, because this is a serious conversation and I don't want this to be taken as tongue in cheek, I would not want to be a police officer. I respect the police. I think there are many great police officers.
It's unfortunate, though, when you have a situation like this that it gets the great police officers generalized into being bad police officers. So here's where I think Tyreek Hill was in the wrong. The officer goes up to Tyreek Hill's car and he asked him to roll down his window.
Tyreek Hill absolutely gave the officer attitude, did not show respect to the officer and rolled up his window. You know, I could only take it from personal experiences. I get it. I'm not black. But when I've been pulled over two times in my life, I call the officer officer.
I follow directions. I keep my hands on the steering wheel and I show some respect. I don't think Tyreek Hill showed respect with that being said, this police officer.
And you know which one we're talking about, because there's many police officers. He took it to a level that it just should not have gone. I understand Tyreek Hill wasn't listening, but then to quickly rip him out of his car and throw him on the ground. That's just a line that got crossed.
And then when Kalaus Campbell, who is a Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winner and is a great dude, walks over there. You could tell he wasn't a threat. He was not escalating the situation. He was trying to bring peace to a chaotic situation. And that one officer then puts him in handcuffs.
So let me be clear here. The officer was in the wrong. Tyreek Hill was in the wrong. But I do think the way that the officer approached it was more damaging than to what Tyreek Hill did. But Tyreek Hill with tinted windows can't have the windows rolled up and yelling at the police officer to not knock on his car.
And basically ordering the police officer to just give him the citation or write him the ticket and then get out of here. That's not Tyreek Hill's place to do that. But the officer's response didn't need to go to a level where you're ripping and forcibly ripping Tyreek Hill out of the car and throwing him on the ground. I do think Tyreek Hill would have just got up.
Would have put his hands behind his back and that was it. But in this case, the officer rips him out and throws him onto the ground. So let's just play the audio of the of some of the situation.
And this is Tyreek Hill and the officer, it's about like a minute or so on a little back and forth. Keep it down. Hey, keep your window down. Hey, keep your window down.
Keep your window down. I'm going to get you out of the car. As a matter of fact, get out of the car. Get out of the car. Get out of the car. Get out of the car right now. We're not playing this game. Get out.
So that's the audio and then you know the images that we've now seen on the Internet. Tyreek Hill in that situation shouldn't be ordering the cop what to do. And there's a right way to go about it. So in that light, Tyreek Hill was in the wrong. But I didn't think it needed to escalate to the point where the officer rips him out of the car and throws him on the ground. This is Tyreek Hill. He was on CNN last night and he said this could have been different if he wasn't a celebrity. Yeah. Like so the crazy part about it is I hate talking like this, man, but because I have a fan base.
But the reality of it is it's the truth. If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, worst case scenario, we would have had a different article. You know, Tyreek Hill, you know, got shot in front of Hard Rock Stadium, you know, or. That's worst case scenario or Tyreek Hill, you know, put in handcuffs and taken in and booked, you know, but.
It's crazy that, you know, I you know, me and my family had to go through this. So that was Tyreek Hill on CNN last night. We don't know how quick Tyreek Hill was going in the car. It was a driving violation and speeding still, though, over a driving violation and speeding. Maybe him not wearing a seat belt, as you heard in the audio, for it to get to that is crazy. Now, he should have rolled down his window. Don't get me wrong. He shouldn't have barked orders at the cop.
But for it to get to that level, it was unnecessary. Let me just reiterate that once again. Here is Mike McDaniel. He gets emotional when talking about Tyreek Hill and Kaleis Campbell. It's been hard for me not to find myself more upset. The more I think about it, and that's because of, you know, my teammates and trying to put myself in that emotion or in that situation that they've described emotionally. And then knowing more than that, I think the the thing that me up, honestly, to be quite frank, is knowing that I don't know exactly.
I don't know what that feels like. So there is an emotional Mike McDaniel. We have breaking news that could change a lot of people's opinions on this as well. So Jeff Darlington just tweeted out that Tyreek Hill was cited for speeding for speeding at a visual estimation of 60 miles per hour. According to citation, here is here it is, in addition to a seatbelt violation. I don't know what the speed limit was, where he was at, but only like, let's say, if it was just 30, like by the stadium, let's just say it's still going over 30 miles. Shouldn't be doing that.
But over 60 miles per hour for this to get to that. That just doesn't make sense. There's a lot of good cops. This cop was a bad cop, obviously. You know, Tyreek Hill, once again, I'll say for the 10000 time, I don't think handled the best situation.
But the cop to take it to that level, it was just so and I mean so unnecessary. I thought so. So that's what all pretty much I could say on the situation.
And those are just my thoughts on the entirety of it. Do we know what the speed limit was? Just wondering. So Stu's taken a look at that around there, but I saw that Jeff Darlington said this is just a breaking story as we see it, that he was only going 60 miles per hour.
It's kind of crazy, by the way, because like, let's say and I don't know if this makes it right or wrong. I'm not saying it does, but like, let's say this was 40 miles from the stadium. You know, it's still a big story, but it's wild that we've had and I know there's a lot more serious instances that have happened.
But outside of a major in Louisville and then also outside of the Dolphins Stadium for their first game of the season. That you have incidents with Scottie Scheffler was participating in a major championship and Tyreek Hill, who is playing in a game. And they're trying, both of them trying to get to work and Scheffler got arrested and Tyreek Hill got detained. Like that to me is a surreal part of this that and I know there's bigger issues here and a bigger topic of conversation. But when I was seeing these visuals, I was live on the air Sunday when this happening.
I was like, oh, my God, like this is right outside the stadium. And it was the instant flashback of obviously what occurred with Scottie Scheffler. So it is that Yelp show on the Infinity Sports Network. Those are my two cents in terms of of everything that did transpire with Tyreek Hill and the police officer. We will take a time out when we come on back with some of the biggest stories of the world of sports with some audio.
We'll get to a news brief next update time. First, though, here is the act man, Rich Ackerman. And the defensive player of the week of the Zach Gelb show is sponsored by the Navy Federal Credit Union, who proudly serves the armed forces, DOD veterans and their families. Their members are the mission.
Learn more at Navy federal dot org. This week's player, Sea Hawk safety Julian Love in Sunday's 26 to 20 victory over the Broncos. Love had 12 total tackles and an interception and also a forced fumble.
Seattle has a defense, forced three turnovers and held Denver to just three point three yards per play. It's time to update you with some of the biggest stories in the world of sports with some audio. Let's get to a news brief. Time for your daily news brief.
We get you caught up on the rumors, reports and reconnaissance from the day in sports. Let's start off with Aaron Rodgers. The Jets get blown out last night on Monday Night Football to open up their season. Here is the Jets quarterback and what went wrong with the offense. We were just bad on first and second down, I think for a lot of the game. And then, you know, we had a couple of drives, we converted third downs. But overall, you know, we feel like we didn't have any third and ten pluses tonight.
So that's always a good thing. We look in the stat sheet. But we didn't convert those third and mediums. We had a drop. We had a couple penalties and a bad throw. And after last year, how it started four plays into the season, Aaron Rodgers year was over.
Aaron is just happy to be healthy right now. Obviously, wanted to, you know, take a shot and feel, you know, the physicality of it. Once I, you know, threw a couple of balls and took a shot, I felt good, felt like I was into the game.
Here's the thing. I know people are going to talk about Aaron Rodgers and the Jets offense because that's the sexy part of it, right? That's the, you know, how you sensationalize kind of a story. I was fine with the Jets offense in their limited moments last night. Like, I'm not going to tell you that was great.
I'm not going to tell you that was good. But I think you saw enough signs where you know Breeze Hall is going to be a better player than what he put on display last night. You got to see a little bit of the connection that Rodgers and Garrett Wilson has. The offensive line is improved. My biggest takeaway was the Jets defense was just rancid last night. That Jets defense is supposed to be the strength of the team, right? What did Jets fans say going into this season? We got a great defense.
If we just get above average Aaron Rodgers, that's a team that's going to win 11, 12 games. That's what Jets fans were saying. And that Jets defense against a great offense, I get it. But you're trying to go win a Super Bowl. And I think the Jets are just a good team, not a great team. That offense last night, or excuse me, that defense last night, it sucked.
It was terrible. And you don't even have to go up against, like imagine if Christian McCaffrey played in the game. If he played in the game, he would have had at least 200 rushing yards, right?
Because the backup for the 49ers, he had 147, that is, Jordan Mason. And you allow 401 total yards at that great Jets defense, and you allow the Niners to convert at a 46% rate on third downs, that defense was embarrassing last night for the Jets. Here is Robert Sala, the defensive-minded head coach on the offense's rhythm last night. I think that will come naturally. I mean, we had 49 plays on offense. And I think that will happen organically when we're able to possess the ball and have a couple of opportunities to drive. You know, you go 12 plays, and then from there, like I said, you're just not seeing the field as much as you want.
But all of it will come together. You know, for the first game, for Aaron, and for the offense and all that stuff, I thought, like I said, there's going to be some good things that we can take away from. And now we've just got to figure out a way to get better from week one to week two. Well, it's tough for the offense, and the coach basically said it, to get in a rhythm, when they're barely on the field, and you're playing from behind for most of the game.
Here's my problem. I don't know about Stu and Manny. I don't know if you felt this way as well last night.
I watched Robert Sala's press conference afterwards. I'm not saying every Jet coach needs to be like Rex Ryan. I'm not saying after that game, nor should he, Robert Sala should not rip the offense. But you're a defensive-minded head coach. Your ass is on the hot seat this year.
This is go time. Your bread and butter is the defense. You've got to be a little bit more animated than basically the dead fish out of water that Robert Sala sounded like last night after the game. He was like, oh, everything's fine.
And I get it now, right? Coaches are more player-friendly. They're more positive.
They're more upbeat. But you've got to rip your team a little bit, or at least rip the defensive side of the ball last night. And Sala was basically like, yeah, we'll be fine. Everything's good. That defense, that's your defense.
Aaron, he runs the offense. That's your defense. And your defense was disgraceful last night. Did you guys want to see a little bit more fire afterwards from Coach Robert Sala, especially directed at his defense? Yeah, absolutely. Always. And I feel like the fact that you're in New York, you're a head coach of a New York football team, you're asking for trouble if you're not going to show the emotion after the game.
Yeah. And Todd Bowles, I know he's gone on to have a good job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was in New York. That was a big problem because he just sounded lost at the podium.
Sala sounds lost at the podium as well. Here is Kyle Shanahan. He gave his thoughts on the big victory up against the JTS. Jets, Jets, Jets.
Still got a long way to go. Today by no means was perfect. There were some parts that were sloppy, but just overall all three phases played really well together. Being able to score there at the end of the half and with the field goal run the clock out, score the opening drive of the third quarter, our defense getting the two turnovers, our kicker going six for six. Another big night for Shanahan.
I know we're not going to praise the Niners much in the regular season because it's all about what they do in the postseason and getting back to the Super Bowl and winning it, but without McCaffrey last night, I thought it was a very, very positive night for Kyle Shanahan and also Brock Purdy as well. Talking about Brock Purdy on growing with the organization and also with Jordan Mason as well as you look at his story. I was the last pick and he was undrafted and knowing that we weren't going to have a lot of opportunities and we had to make the most of the opportunities that we got.
So he knew that and we both did. And so to see him over the last two years just push the envelope more and more every year and then get an op this year at camp and do well with it and obviously in the first game of the season he did great with it. So really, really excited for him. He's earned it, man. He's the kind of guy that was not given to him.
And so to see him go out and do what he did tonight, man, I'm so happy for him and I know he's going to keep pushing. And we don't have the audio, but you know what was a little insufferable last night? So Jordan Mason talks to, I think it was Lisa Salters afterwards. And he says to Lisa Salters, like, oh, we have the audio?
Okay, play that on the field, the exchange afterwards. When did you find out that you were going to be starting? When did I find out? Maybe Friday, Friday night, you know, something like that. So he says Friday, like maybe Friday night, something like that. And then afterwards, when he's talking to the media at the podium, he's just like going off when he was asked the question again. This is why he doesn't like talking to the media.
This isn't why he doesn't trust the media. And I'm sure what happened behind the scenes is they heard the interview and then someone before I got to the podium said, hey, we don't want to get in any trouble with the injury report and all that. But just because he's told he's going to start doesn't mean that Christian McCaffrey is going to be inactive.
He'll have Christian McCaffrey active without the intention of him playing or only using him in an emergency situation. But Jordan Mason last night, everyone's like, oh, let him have his night, let him enjoy the night. He was the one that said, yeah, I think I found out that I was starting on Friday.
So he said that, again, he's a youngster, so maybe he doesn't have a lot of media experience. But this idea that the media did Jordan Mason wrong last night, please, just give me a break. Let's go to Micah Parsons. This is on his podcast, The Edge Podcast with Micah Parsons.
We know C.D. Lamb got paid out of nowhere right before the start of the season. With the year left on his deal, Dak Prescott got paid. Here is Micah Parsons on his future in Dallas. And then a lot of fans is worried about me, man. I know I'm going to be a Cowboy. There's nothing like Cowboy Nation.
I think the love is very mutual. But as for me, man, I'm just focused on winning games. I want to win those big games. I want to win those playoff games, get to the Super Bowl. For me, the contract is not really what I'm worried about. It's just me being the best player I can be for my guys, my teammates. And, you know, if a contract, something like that happens further up, then that happens. But right now, we're going to focus on just trying to be legendary, be great, and bring championships back to Dallas because that's what the most important thing is. Everything he said is spot on.
And it's something that you want one of your leaders to say. And he was awesome up against the Browns. And he's going to get paid after this season.
Next year is the final year on his rookie contract. But I had to chuckle when he was like, yeah, we want to bring championships back to Dallas. How about you just get to an NFC title game first? You know, stop talking about a Super Bowl and a, how about one championship? Do we need to make that plural?
Please. Championships? The Cowboys haven't been to a conference championship game since the 1995 season. But it is kind of ironic because Micah Parsons welcomes the drama, right? You have the podcast and even his own teammate, Malik Hooker, went after him for, out of all these scenarios, when you take a glance at C.D. Lamb, Dak, and Micah, if you would have said to me before the offseason started, who's going to have the most drama with their contract, I would have thought it would have been Micah Parsons. And it's been the least amount of drama with Micah Parsons.
Instead, there's been more drama directed towards C.D. Lamb and eventually got the deal done. And then Dak Prescott as well. Here is Dan Orlovsky in NFL Live blames too much shotgun offense for offenses and QBs struggling. All right, so one, I think it is attached to some of these guys not playing in the preseason, okay? But more so than that for me is the schemes that I'm seeing so much in the NFL. There is so much shotgun that's happening in the NFL.
When you do that, I think defensive lines tee off way more. I think defensive linemen have the awareness to get their hands up at the line of scrimmage more. There is nothing when it comes to timing and rhythm and marrying the quarterback drop with the depth of the routes. Matt, I can't tell you how much I saw yesterday of a quarterback being ready to throw and receivers not even looking for the football. Because they're thinking, I got to throw, receivers are running concepts. We got to get back to putting quarterbacks under center more on a consistent basis. There's one team that I truly believe can play shotgun football and play well, and that's the Los Angeles Rams. Everyone else, you got to get rid of it being the foundation of your offense. Well, I'm not saying necessarily that we go totally away from that, but I think it's more so timing, lack of continuity, lack of chemistry, and there used to be actual ways to get ready for a season.
Now with the new design CBA, plus they don't even use the preseason games anymore for most of these players that are starters, and the limited contact you're allowed to have in the offseason, too, it is a formula for sloppy football early on. Here is Jason Kelce making his Monday Night Football debut on the pregame show last night on ESPN. This was great. Super Bowl champion and Emmy Award winner, Ryan Clark. A first-round draft pick from the Dallas Cowboys, the national champ at LSU, Marcus Spears.
And I'm just Scott Van Pelt. I have no accolades of any kind, but collectively we are thrilled to welcome in a six-time first team. Yes, sir. All NFL selection is Super Bowl champion. Six times. Six times. Future gold jacket wearer.
He got a podcast that apparently is doing fairly well. And all that said, Jason Kelce is wearing a shirt he got at the mall because he left his travel bag in the truck. Yeah, it looked good in the toolbox. He left the bag in the truck. It fits my belly now.
I've lost a little bit of weight, but my shits are still struggling. We have to bleep that? The T word, we have to bleep?
Do we actually have to bleep that or is that just the baladi school method where we have to just bleep things that we don't really have to actually bleep? Don't think you can say that. I could be wrong.
Should I try to say it and see what happens? I won't do that to Manny. But that was great by Jason Kelce.
I was the one who edited it. He forgets his suit. He forgets his dress shirt, all that, and has to go to like Lululemon, I think what he said. Gets a dress shirt and he was good in the gut, but not good in the boobs. Or he used a T word, and it's not the T word you maybe think of. It's a different T word. His is Zach Gilch. On the Infinity Sports Network, we'll talk about Deshaun Watson and the latest there next.
