Didn't go my way. Coach named Baker the starter. Just this morning, I was made aware that I was going to be starting.

For me personally, it sucks, to be quite honest. This is the Adam Gold Show. Being someone who appreciates honesty, I appreciate Sam Darnold's comment there.

Welcome to the Adam Gold Show. I am him. Dennis Cox is here, as always, even when he's on PTO. You can participate in the program many ways. You can hit either of us up on Twitter, at agoldfan, at The Fan Rookie.

Also, there are phone numbers if you want to participate in some of our open segments, that's fair, 919-860-5326. We will have a listener poll at one o'clock, and you are more than welcome to chime in at that point. We put out a poll earlier in the program.

What were we asking people? Baker, Mayfield, and the Panthers? Baker and the Panthers? Did Tigers save golf? What else do we have on the poll? Is Tom Brady back from vacation or wherever he was? We also have a Subway series.

Oh, big win for the Yankees last night. We have options for you, and that's all good. We'll do that at one o'clock, 919-860-5326. You can watch this program on TV. You can see me in my pink polo, if you will, at channel 1257 on Spectrum Cable if you are local to the Raleigh listening area.

Also, if you are within the WRAL TV 5 viewing area on your antenna, 34.1, or hit the WRAL app on Roku, Fire, Android, Apple TV, where you can simply stream us at WRAL.com. So we're all there. It's on TV, so we have all these fancy things behind us, so that's good.

A lot of stuff to get to, so let's see if we can get through it all. It really is the worst kept secret in the last month and a half. Would Baker Mayfield unseat Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers? That question was finally answered and revealed yesterday, as if. Look, I don't know how it was presented in the building, but I do understand logic. Logically speaking, Baker Mayfield was always going to be the starter, unless he was in a body cast. Obviously, Sam and I knew this day was going to eventually come, but we weren't counting down the days.

We didn't know when it was going to happen or anything like that, so I just this morning was made aware that I was going to be starting and saw Sam shortly after. He made it very clear that anything I needed in support or in terms of that aspect, he was going to be there, and that just shows what kind of team guy he is. Honestly, just an unfortunate circumstance that we're both here in the same year fighting for a job, but that's the kind of guy he is. He said whatever you need in support, he's just trying to win games, and that's the mentality we've had the whole time, so I truly, truly appreciate that, and he's a great guy. I'm sure he is.

Here's the difference. Baker looks the part. To me, looks the part. Sam Darnold, I believe, will have a good, long career as a serviceable backup quarterback.

There's, gosh, what a great gig. Who is it, Chase Daniel or Blaine Gavin? Yeah, Chase Daniel. Chase Daniel's never started a game? Maybe one.

Maybe one. Like, gosh, he's been in the league forever. This is like furniture, and Sam Darnold has starting pedigree. Let's call him a poor man's Jimmy Garoppolo.

For me, personally, it sucks, to be quite honest. I don't think it's a big surprise. All the traits, attributes, the mindset to be a starter in this league, but again, I think it's my job to do everything I can. What my role is now is the backup, and I'm going to do everything I can to prepare myself to play if something happens to Baker, but at the same time, I've got to do everything I can to help him get ready for a game. I appreciate Sam Darnold taking the high road there. It would be very, very easy for Darnold to say, they really never gave me a chance.

But here's the response to that is, your chance was last year. There's a reason they went and got Baker Mayfield. It's because last year, you did not inspire confidence that you could be a good starting quarterback. Over an extended period of time, I think all of the issues of Darnold become revealed. Sam, to me, is more of a placeholder at quarterback. He can get you out of a game. He might even be able to be the starter as you win a couple of games, given the right spot on the schedule. But ultimately, if you want to be good, like a good football team, I don't think Sam Darnold is going to be your guy, unless your defense is the 2000 Ravens.

It's the way I look at it. Keyshawn Johnson from Keyshawn, J. Will and Max on the decision to go with Baker. I think both of these quarterbacks, whichever one was going to be the starter, was going to be on thin ice anyway. The coach right now's seat has flames on it that it's just so ridiculous that he'll burn like in two seconds if he sit down. And that's where it's at with him. He had to make the right choice for them right now, before he can move on to the second guy if it's not working out, because he doesn't have another quarterback in him.

I mean, he'll be fired if they don't make the playoffs and make major improvements this year. All right, now, to me, that's the big issue right there. That's the big issue. The thin ice or the hot seat?

Yes. If a hot seat is on thin ice, you have no chance, right? You have no chance if your hot seat is hovering over thin ice. The new voice of the Panthers on the radio, Aneesh Sharaf, was on ESPN radio last night talking about the head coach's future. At the end of the day, I think it comes down to progress, and I know the NFL is driven by the raw numbers, the wins, the losses, but this is a team that's got a young core, and this is a team being around them, essentially throughout training camp in Wofford. They are together. The guys genuinely like each other.

There's really not a bad apple there. The culture that you often hear, you get thrown about from coaches, culture, culture, culture. You can see it starting to take root, and I would argue it's there, and I think that's going to manifest itself out on the field. All right, here's my view of this because I've been asked about it, and I've referred to the interview I did with ESPN radio back about six weeks ago. Matt Ruhl's future as the head coach of the Panthers is very tenuous, but I don't believe it's tied to playoffs because I believe this team can be improved and still not make the playoffs. I also think that you can make the playoffs and not really be that much better, so I don't know if it's his last year. If I was wagering, I would say it would be, but they need to just show improvement in game planning, game management over the course of a 60-minute football game, being better in the third quarter than they have been. They have not been a second-half football team, so that speaks to adjustments in the head coach's office. So there's a lot of ways to determine whether or not Matt Ruhl's going to be good enough to be the coach for the Panthers beyond this year.

It doesn't have to manifest itself in a playoff spot. All right, that's that. We're going to talk more about this, obviously. There's a great Justin Timberlake song, my favorite Justin Timberlake song, by the way. What goes around – oh, you're going to play it. Very nice.

Great, just a dynamite song. The video with Scarlett Johansson. Johansson, not Johansson. I don't know why I call her Johansson. I've got hockey on my mind already.

The video with Scarlett Johansson is phenomenal. Anyway, remember a few years ago? This just put me in a place, Dennis. Mike Glennon. You're welcome. Thank you. I was watching this earlier.

I had to stop it. Anyway, so Mike Glennon, our old friend, former NC State quarterback, signed a free agent deal with the Chicago Bears. He was going to be the guy, and then Chicago drafted Mitch Trubisky at number two. They moved up one spot from three to two and drafted Mitch Trubisky. And you know the rest of the story, right? The Mike Glennon era.

Well, yes. Fast forward to today. Trubisky's time in Chicago was short. He spent a year watching Josh Allen be a stud in Buffalo last year.

And then moved on to Pittsburgh because they were in that transition period. Ben Roethlisberger, who frankly had been bad for two years. Roethlisberger is gone, and they were drafting their quarterback of the future in Kenny Pickett. That's what they did. We all knew they were going to take a quarterback somewhere, probably the first round, and they did.

I think number 20. But it was going to take time. So Trubisky was there. He was going to get his chance to be the starting quarterback.

But in the immortal words of Lee Corso, not so fast, my friends. The Steelers drafted Pickett, Adam Schefter of ESPN, now out here dropping hot bars. The feeling around the league has been that Mitch Trubisky was in line to be the opening day starter, the favorite to be that guy.

And when you talk to people now, here's what you keep hearing. That the young kid is quote-unquote coming on, and he's coming quick. And so I don't know when they're going to get to Kenny Pickett, but they're going to get to Kenny Pickett at some point in the season. I think, essentially, as soon as Mitchell Trubisky has a stumble early in the season, that'll open the door to get to Kenny Pickett.

Sorry, Mitch. We're going to talk to Brooke Pryor, who covers the Steelers for ESPN, about this in just a few minutes. Honestly, I think Trubisky was done dirty by the Bears, even though the Bears rushed Trubisky onto the field. Gosh, it's such a good video. It really is a great video, but it's a super song.

It really is a great song. Trubisky, it just didn't go well in Chicago, but he was set up to fail, much like they're setting Justin Fields up to fail. I've been railing about this with quarterbacks in the NFL for longer than I care to admit, and everybody keeps saying the same thing to me.

That's the way it's done today. And this is why quarterbacks like Trubisky, who were overdrafted, he wasn't the second best player in that draft. Forget about in retrospect, because, correct me if I'm wrong, Trubisky was drafted before Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. He wasn't even the best quarterback in that draft, and this shouldn't be hindsight. We should have seen that, and NFL execs should have seen that, that year, that draft year. But, for whatever reason, Trubisky was number two, and those guys were drafted in double figures. So, with all of that said, just because you draft a guy too high doesn't mean you gotta rush him to the field. But, this is what teams do. They overdraft quarterbacks, they overvalue players, then they put them on the field too soon, then they ruin them, and then they go, well, let's get the other guy.

That ain't the way to do it. And even though that's the way it's done today, we're seeing a failure rate of starting quarterbacks is way more than 50-50. If you draft a quarterback in the top ten, and you don't get the right guy, that's on you. That's not on the quarterback, that's on you.

And these guys all get rushed to the field. We're seeing Trey Lance sit out a season, we saw Patrick Mahomes sit out a season, not sit out, but... Well, he did. He didn't play.

I say sit out, but he basically sat on the sidelines and watched. Behind Alex Smith, who was good but not amazing, right? Jimmy G was the same thing. Jimmy G was good, nothing great or amazing, and Lance got to sit around and watch the guy play.

This is the way to do it. Now, we don't know if Trey Lance is gonna be anything. Jordan Love probably won't be anything for the Packers, but maybe he'll be something for somebody else. The issue is, we put these guys in the field too soon, they're not ready to do it, they create either bad habits or they wash out.

I just don't understand. If we keep saying, we have to find the guy, we have to find the guy, we have to find the guy, well then give yourself the best chance to find the guy. And draft him, develop him, and then put him on the field. Hey, some guys are ready before others. Peyton Manning got on the field right away.

Well, duh. Andrew Luck was put on the field right away. Cam Newton was put on the field right away.

These guys have to play. Mitch Trubisky didn't have to play. And again, I'm not saying that Trubisky would have been great. I think he was overdrafted by probably, oh I don't know, 20 spots. Speaking of quarterbacks, the way the Panthers drafted Matt Corral might be the way to do it.

Dr. Salen Perec from Duke University, orthopedic surgeon, the official orthopedic surgeon of the Adam Gold Show. First of all, congratulations to your Yankees. They beat my Mets last night.

They keep going. Yeah, I mean they have to win occasionally. So we Mets threw him a bone last night. Throwing him another bone tonight.

No Jacob DeGrom pitching as they're pushing his start back a couple of days. Yes, I'm worried in case you're wondering. I am worried. Alright, let's talk about the Lisfranc injury by Matt Corral. It's apparently a ligament tear to the Lisfranc.

Walk me through the issues, the recovery, what this means. So the fact that surgery is being considered already tells us that this is an unstable injury. When you look at your foot, the Lisfranc ligament is sitting right in the middle of your foot, in the middle of the arch when you look at the arch from the front to the back and from inside to outside. And so surgery means it's unstable.

Now there are a lot of different patterns of this. So sometimes they're associated with breaks, sometimes just the ligament. It sounds like for Matt it's just a ligament issue in which case surgeons will likely go in, just put plates and screws on there and then it's a recovery. Typically you won't see these guys walk on this foot for four to six weeks. And then it's just a lot of therapy to regain the agility, the strength and work on swelling. And that can take four to six months to happen.

That's fine. I mean Matt Corral doesn't need to play. This was going to be a developmental year for him anyway with Baker Mayfield being the starter and Sam Darnold was always going to be kept around as the backup unless somebody comes and blows Carolina away and an offer for Sam Darnold which I can't imagine happening.

So it's good in a way that there's no pressure to put Matt Corral on the field. Is this the type of an injury that typically reoccurs? Not usually because the hardware typically stays in for life, especially in professional athletes. So the chance of re-injuring this same foot with the hardware in place is almost zero. So not something that we can recur but it is something that can cause aches and pains throughout his career.

Okay, that's cool. Look, he is obviously a valuable part of their future. Let me just ask you real quick. I know we have some Giants fans here. Dr. Salen Perec is our official orthopedic surgeon in spite of the fact that he's a Yankees fan. Kavon Thibodeau, Yankees draft pick. I guess he sprained an MCL.

What does that mean? So your MCL is the ligament on the inside of your knee. So if you just push the inside of your knee, you're touching the MCL.

It is one of the big stabilizers of the knee. And when you sprain it, depending on the severity, it can be two to six weeks to return to play. And so he'll be obviously needing to nurse this. You can't get them back too soon because you can re-aggravate it. But again, two to six weeks, it's not something that causes long-term issues here.

All right, I want to go back to Matt Corral for one thing before we let Dr. Salen Perec go, and I appreciate your time as always. Is this something that limits his, I mean, he's a pretty good athlete. Is this something that limits his mobility or anything like that in the future? Or when he returns, assuming surgery goes well, that he'll be back fine? So he should be back fine because he's a quarterback. When you get concerned about this injury with running backs, tight ends, wide receivers, guys are trying to get explosive cutting and explosive motions. But for a quarterback, you don't really need that. So for Matt Corral, I think he's going to be fine.

I don't think this has any consequence in his career moving forward. The fantasy doctors, you can follow Dr. Salen Perec. First of all, Dr. Salen Perec, MD. But the fantasy doctors, if you're a fantasy football player, you, and by the way, Jesse Morse has to stop tweeting. Tell him. He is a machine. My gosh.

I get more Jesse Morse on my timeline than I get anything. I appreciate your time, Doc. We'll talk soon.

Take care. Dr. Salen Perec here on the Adam Gold Show. He and Jesse Morse, Dr. Jesse Morse, who has been on this program before as well. They are the fantasy doctors. If you're a fantasy player, this sort of helps you get through injuries. Most of the issues with fantasy football teams, once you've drafted your team is, oh my gosh, my guy's hurt.

Do I get rid of him? When is he coming back? So nobody's drafting Matt Corral either way. By the way, we will not be talking fantasy, like our fantasy teams on this show. No, if we're talking fantasy football, we will be talking about my fantasy EPL team. Yes, of course.

And look, no Darwin, no Nunez. He's suspended for three matches. Really? Well, yeah, from the headbutt during the Crystal Palace match from a week ago. And I'm going to try and pretend I didn't see what I saw yesterday. A dreadful, dreadful Liverpool performance at Old Trafford.

I'm trying hard to not see that. All right, we have some other random, borderline important NFL news. One, Tom Brady is back. Yes. At Buccaneers camp. Well, he said that he was not on the Masked Singer, which I never believed he was.

He did say on his Twitter timeline that he was wearing a mask. So I question you, Dennis. Yep.

What was he doing? All right, so I guess I have thoughts on this too. So I'm going to tie two theories together. So my theory was when he retired, he booked a vacation. That's my theory. He booked a vacation.

He was out on the road somewhere. So hey, you know what? Tickets already bought. I can't get refunds. They might give you vouchers, but I don't want to do it. So I'm sorry.

I've got this book. I can't get refunds. Sometimes you can't get a refund. Tom Brady, but first of all, it doesn't even matter what Tom Brady makes. Giselle's worth about a billion dollars. It doesn't matter. It's the principle of the matter, Adam.

Something's paid for, you're going to use it. My guess is that he actually was training to be a lucha libre, a professional wrestler down in Mexico. So this week he was wearing a mask, wrestling for CMLL and or AAA down in Mexico this whole week. That is my guess as to what he was doing, hence why he was wearing a mask and was gone.

Very interesting. By the way, there is a rumor that he was on vacation. Yeah, he was vacationing in Mexico and he was wrestling on the side. There was a rumor that he was on vacation. He was booked.

He went over. I find it hard to believe, though, that he's leaving training camp to go on vacation, but anything is possible. And if anybody could get away with it, it would be Tom Brady. But Giselle has the whole, we can't get refunds, just made me laugh.

She could start her own golf tour. Anyway, here's my theory. Maybe they were on vacation and he was scuba diving.

You'd need a mask, right? Maybe he's finishing up med school. You never know.

Finishing up med school. Early Halloween party. Could be. Anyway, I'm wondering if he was playing paintball.

Oh, that could be it. He and the kids. He was playing paintball in Mexico on vacation in between his bookings for CMLL. He and the kids.

Paintball. Alright, let's end it there. We'll take a short break.

We'll come back. Really, now that the Panthers are set at quarterback. Not that they weren't set at quarterback for this year, a month and a half ago.

But now that they're set, is there any other issue that is pressing beyond the head coach? Adam Gold here from My Man, Coach Pete DeRuta with the Capital Financial Advisory Group. We are talking retirement.

Alright, Coach, simple. When do we start tax planning in retirement? We should start as soon as possible because here's one thing, Adam, taxes are not going away.

Right. And so the game here is we know the rules. A lot of people want to ignore the rules or act like they aren't familiar with them, but the IRS knows the rules. And so when we get to retirement, they're going to reach in and start taking some of their money out of your accounts. So the secret here is to put a force field around as much as possible by strategically moving some of our money to Roth IRA or some of the other vehicles that aren't taxed.

Special life insurance policies, you can borrow against your money there and never have to pay tax on your money that you build up inside your cash value. So there are a lot of strategies here. The one strategy that does not work is ignoring it. So let's make sure to not ignore it. The next 10 people will do for you your very own tax and retirement plan that will help you minimize taxation all the way through retirement.

800-661-7383, all you got is call or you can text Adam to 21000 for Coach Pete DeRuta. So the Baker Mayfield thing is a done deal now. Before I get to that real quick, a little bit of breaking news, sort of. It's not earth shattering, but it is brand new. Just came across the ethernet to me.

The wire just came across the wire. It does sound like old school breaking news music, though. The hurricane signed 36 year old Paul Stasny to a one year contract worth, I think, a million and a half dollars. Pretty much cements the fact that they'll have to long term I.R. Max Paciaretti's seven million dollar contract.

Well, yeah, right. Because they're already over the salary cap of that. So they'll LTI are that and they'll have about five months to figure out the cap issues before they activate Max Paciaretti unless maybe they believe that Paciaretti won't be able to return until the playoffs, in which case they won't have to do anything. But it gives them time. It gives them gives them a lot of time, even at 36 years old. Scored 46 points, 45 points, whatever it was with a Winnipeg team that went into the toilet last year.

They were already starting to go there. Then Paul Maurice resigned. He is now the head coach for the Florida Panthers. But good signing for Carolina. I don't know what he's got left.

We'll find out. But he got into scored more than 20 goals for the Jets last year and good, good face off guy, although he's a left face off guy. So left shot. So the hurricanes have cornered the market on left face off men. The only one who's sort of there is on a professional tryout.

And that's Derek Step on. So we'll see what happens there. All right. So back to the Carolina Panthers.

So now that Baker Mayfield is the one, he's the one. What's the pressing issue? I mean, there are plenty of pressing issues. The pressing issue from a personnel standpoint is, you know, do you have good enough players in the middle of your defensive line? Do you have enough depth there if something happens to Brown or ionitis?

Are you are you better at the corners, which we mean, we don't know. We still haven't seen JC Horn go through, you know, a couple of weeks without well, we're backing them off. Yeah, so we still haven't seen that. And my own thought is that Vincent Jackson or I'm sorry, done. Dante Jackson, Vincent Jackson. I thought I was going to say Vincent trochek for a second former great wide receiver.

Yeah, it's a Jackson. I don't even former anymore, but Dante Jackson is I think good, but I'm not going beyond that. I think you're better off if he's your third quarterback, if we're talking about building a team, that is a playoff team and a great defense. I think he's your third corner.

I don't know if he's suited better to be a slot corner, or maybe he's just your second, like, you know, just saying he's not to me is not a shutdown guy. Jeremy Chin playing mostly at safety not having to drop into the into the box, but I also think that Jeremy chin should they should use him wherever because he's a great player, but I think they have issues still to deal with in their secondary. They have to find somebody to rush the passer not named Brian. It has to be Brian Burns. It has to be somebody else other than Brian Burns. It'd be great if they got pressure up the middle, whether it's from ionitis or Derek Brown. So the defense, even though what I don't think they finished second in the league last year.

In what category? Yeah, it's just to me. It's it's not it's good, but I don't look at their defense as great. Yeah.

Okay. We know their offense isn't great. I mean, we know the offensive line has potential but it's a work in progress. The wide receivers are have potential, but that's a work in progress tight ends have potential but that's a work in progress.

I mean, that's that's where the team is. So DJ Moore is excellent. They don't have the guy opposite him because Terrace Marshall is having a hard time staying healthy. Andy Anderson is to me. Just a home run hitter that drops too many passes is otherwise not really reliable.

It's just not that good, right? So that mean to me, there are a lot leaves to be desired to me the the major issue with the Panthers. Is is the head coach the right guy? And we're going to find out this year and I don't believe that there will be a barring a disaster. Barring an oh and something start. I don't think we're going to see a mid-season change. I don't think anybody has delusions about what this Panthers team is.

Everything goes right. If Brown becomes a stud, if somebody emerges on the other side of the pass rush from Burns, if Horn becomes, you know, an all a Pro Bowl caliber corner. Your defense is great.

Then I mean you could push and push eight or nine wins. And yes, as we talked to will Brinson yesterday that puts you in fringy playoff condition, you know contention, but to be honest. What will really make the difference with this team? Is the development of the head coach? That's the area of improvement that needs to be felt the most and I'm not here selling everybody on Matt rule. I was my advice after last year was yeah, you can go. Yeah, we can move on. I don't believe he's ever going to be that guy. This is not a knock on rule. Some guys are really good college coaches and Matt rule was that he could go back to a to a university and you know, build a very solid program and be at a school for a decade. And have a great life man being an NFL coach. We're fine. We're going to find that out with Brandon Stanley.

Oh with the Chargers with the Chargers. Yeah, I get that. I get his name, right? No, it's Staley Staley.

Never mind. That's wrong, but Brandon Stanley too. Yeah. No, actually he sucks. No, we're going to find that out with Staley actually no brain, right?

So do I so we're going to fight we're going to find out about Staley this year. The Chargers have to win. Yeah, he was sort of in the way of winning last year to an extent. So was Sean McDermott in Buffalo. Yeah said this yesterday about the bills. I think they're the best team in the league.

What do I know but I think they are the best team in the league. They have one of the top no worse than third quarterback in the game. Whoever you think is one to Josh Allen is in that mix. Yeah, right.

You've got good. Maybe not great running backs, but they don't need great running backs. Good offensive line. They have to replace her offensive coordinator.

It'll be Ken Dorsey former Panthers quarterbacks coach offensive guy former Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey, but they've got super wide receiver. Stefan Diggs is dynamite have a great defense. They added Von Miller to an already great defense. So they have all the pieces and last year two things jumped out at me about the bills one. They allowed the Patriots to beat them by throwing the ball just three times. That is unacceptable absolutely unacceptable and I say it because they didn't do anything to force the Patriots to do anything different. And the bills on a 30 with you know with the wind blowing at about 35 miles an hour just ran the normal offense and they lost they lost to a team that attempted three forward passes and I'm not even sure they attempted one in the second half.

That's it. And then with a chance to beat the Chiefs in the championship game that wasn't the championship game. It was the defacto AFC championship game with a chance to beat the Chiefs and a lead and the Chiefs needing a field goal with I think 13 seconds left on the clock.

Mathematically speaking, there should have been no way the bills could lose that game. They kicked it. They kicked it deep touch back. No, no, no, you've you've got to have time run off the clock.

Even even one second. Yeah has to run off the clock even if they fall on it immediately, but at their own like 17 yard line second off the clock something has to run. And then why are you rushing anybody? They've got to get like 50 or not 50 yards, but 40 yards of offense when that time out. Why are you rushing anybody? You drop 11 into coverage.

They didn't do that. They gave up two broken plays, but run after catch. Yeah. What are we doing? That's all in the head coach. It's all in the head coach. So Sean McDermott has to get better.

So back to Matt rule. Game planning has to be better. We can't hear after a game. Well, you know, we're not a team that can throw it 35 40 times a game after they just threw it 35 to 40 times a game. Game management has to be better.

Clock management, timeout management, pre-snap penalties, those things that have proven to be problems for this coaching staff. And they can't be so dreadful in the second half as they've been. Third quarters have been terrible for them. They need to be better. And frankly, I think it's really started going away in the second quarter for the Panthers.

So they need to be able to be adjusted to adjust better. So if you're a Panthers fan, those are the things we that you should be looking for for this team this year. And if those things are addressed, then maybe Matt rule can be the guy. But I don't think it's about wins. I really think it's about what we see in terms of how they present themselves during games.

Because it's all about, it's all about preparing. That's why, you know, we'll probably talk about Bill Belichick later. There's a lot of talk about the who's calling the plays. Like, dude, Bill Belichick is in control of everything and he always has been. Even when Josh McDaniels was calling the plays, Bill Belichick's part of the game planning. Josh McDaniels didn't go, hey, Bill, let's just let's just throw it three times. That's what Bill said. Bill said that. June 19th, 2006, but it all started May 6th, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford Whalers were coming to North Carolina.

It's a story of transition, of heartbreak, of figuring it out on the fly. The Canes Corner look at the 25th anniversary of the move presented by the Aluminum Company of North Carolina. Listen now.

It's fine. When does Christopher Cross come up? When are you going to play sailing? I don't know. Or Arthur. Arthur's theme. When is that happening? When do we get Escape by Rupert Holmes? All great questions. The Pina Colada song.

I'm sure that's coming. I just had a random playlist. It's fine. I was like, all right. Look, I'm okay with it.

I have no problem with this song. I'm a yacht rock guy. All right. Couple of things going on. Canes signed Paul Stasney today to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. We're going to talk about the Steelers quarterback situation coming up next hour with our old friend Brooke Pryor covers the Steelers for ESPN. We used to work here in Raleigh covering the Tar Heels.

Here's the thing. This is sort of a what goes around, comes around thing for Mitch Trubisky because he was drafted the same year Mike Glennon signed the free agent contract with the Chicago Bears. And he gets to Chicago. Glennon gets to Chicago, thinks he's going to be the guy.

He throws out the first pitch at Wrigley Field. Then they draft Trubisky. And the rest is Mike Glennon.

There you go. Mike Glennon not being the starting quarterback. So Trubisky signs with Pittsburgh this off season. Feels like he's going to be the guy. Yeah, at least for a year, two year contract and then not. He knew they were going to draft a quarterback, but man, all the news right now is that Kenny Pickett is on the rise.

And that ultimately they're going to get to pick it sooner rather than later. So, Mitch, if you in fact do start the season as the number one, play well, play well, because the pressure is on. We'll talk about some other things. Tom Brady is back at Bucks training camp. Birdie whispered to me that the family had a medical procedure, which is maybe why he was wearing a mask. Family member had a procedure. Did I hear that? I think his mom is dealing with potentially some medical issue. No idea.

So who knows, Tom? Nobody in Tampa's upset that Tom Brady was gone for a couple of weeks. He missed two preseason games. He wasn't going to play. Here's something else that happened, which I think is like, why didn't this happen earlier? If you are a Washington Commandos fan, they announced today that Sonny Jurgensen's number nine would be retired.

Nice. My question is, why wasn't it retired already? That's my question. That dude was great. He's in the Hall of Fame. He is while he played for the Eagles first.

I don't even get why he's not, his number's not retired. He's a legendary part of that franchise. He was a legendary part of their broadcast. The Sonny, Sam and Frank broadcast, which I'll be honest, wasn't great, was great for their diehard fans. And Jurgensen was the straight man to Sam Huff's, maybe a little goofy. Sam Huff was a little goofy, but that was a great broadcast with Frank Herzog in the middle of it. Anyway, he has his number nine. He is a Duke grad, Sonny Jurgensen, and also a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, and a graduate of New Hanover High School.

So a lot of people should be feeling proud about that today. All right, last week. Major, major PGA Tour players only meeting as Tiger Woods got on his golf stream and flew up from Jupiter, Florida to Wilmington, Delaware, landed in Philly and rented a car. It was a Toyota, I think, and he had Rickie Fowler drove from Philly to Wilmington, Delaware for a PGA Tour player only meeting. No, no PGA Tour officials, no commissioner. They had an outside consultant. And ultimately, Tiger, Rory McElroy, and about 20 other top PGA Tour pros have a plan, they hatched a plan to essentially save the tour.

This may sound familiar to you. Up to as many as 15 limited field, big money events. Ah, I know what you're thinking. Sounds like something we have currently. Shotgun starts?

No, no shotgun starts. It won't, the events will not be limited to 48. There may be a cut, but ultimately they're trying to build big events within the PGA Tour to get the best players playing together, which has been argued has been a problem.

The point of, well, we're independent contractors. Guys can come and go as they please as long as they play enough events. That sort of is an issue because you don't have a lot of concentration in the same events. Yes, the big, the best players play in majors. Yes, they play in the players championship. For the most part, they play in the World Golf Championship, the match play, but they don't really see each other a ton otherwise. So that has to be a priority for the PGA Tour.

Ultimately, there's a lot to be desired here, but I do think that they are building mechanisms for, we'll just call them the rank and file. So your garden variety PGA Tour player. I'm going to use the name Harold Varner as a Gastonia guy, who the last year or so has maybe put himself into that top 40ish player, but I kind of think of Harold Varner as a rank and file tour member. So the Harold Varners of the world can still, by playing well in other PGA Tour events, can get into these larger money stops on tour, these limited field events. So there's going to be a way for players like this to play their way in.

I think it's a good deal because ultimately your star players are your leagues. No matter what the league is, star players really pay the way for everybody. You ask any PGA Tour player, what is responsible? What happened that allows you to play for the money you play right now? Tiger.

Tiger came in under the PGA Tour in 1996 and suddenly everybody's winning a lot of money. Hmm. I wonder why. So the stars do this, no offense to the rank and file, but they're not moving the needle. They're not paying the way. It's the other guys who are paying the way.

They're trying to create something. Ultimately, they just don't want the top players leaving. And we know Cam Smith is going to leave probably Monday or Tuesday, and they don't want anybody else among the top players to join him.

We'll see what happens. This is the Adam Gold Show. June 19th, 2006, but it all started May 6th, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford Whalers were coming to North Carolina.
