On this week's Hopecast, David Chadwick and Jenn Houston read biblical prophecies about the end times, and how those prophecies foretell a downward spiral of morality in our world.
Welcome to this week's test with my friend Jim Houston helps share this time with me Jen. It's great having you with me today. It's always an honor. Thank you, David. I want to talk today in this hope cast about another episode of what's going on in our culture, and it looks to me like we are seeing in fulfillment of biblical prophecy continued downward trend of morality. I think it's happening all around us.
And as you look at a biblical passage which talks about what's going to happen in the latter days. It's rather startling. I think as we view what's happening in our culture today. So Jen, I've asked you if you would read second Timothy chapter 3 verses one through nine, and listeners. Please note as Jen reads this that the apostle Paul speaking under the authority of the Holy Spirit is using a reference to the latter days to the end times. So Jen read this and let's listen with interest. Second Timothy chapter 3 verse one says that but understand this in the last days there will come times of difficulty for people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud and arrogant and decent, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unimpeachable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.
Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Janice and Jan presuppose Moses said these men also oppose the truth men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith that they will not get very far for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men will Jen, the first thing to note there is in the end times or in the latter days. Paul is trying to give us an insight into what the world is going to look like right when Jesus comes back and we know from Jesus own words in Matthew 24 and Mark 13, and Luke 21 that he gives us insights into what's going on and he says to us that the world is going to have these things happening in greater frequency and also in greater intensity, so that means that as the world moves toward the time when Jesus returns. These evils are going to increase with more intensity and more frequency and I think as we look around us we see these very things happening there are 19 different listings there in second Timothy chapter 3 verses one through 919 different specific things that are going to occur before Jesus returns.
And I've tried to divide them into four areas. The first one is that there will be a narcissistic exultation of self that people are going to be lovers of self, rather than lovers of other people and we are seeing in our culture with greater frequency and intensity the exaltation of self autonomy that the God of our culture is whatever I want whatever I feel. That takes precedent over anything and everything else.
So we see this narcissistic exaltation of self. We also see secondly the rejection of authority, we find it interesting that we Jen that the sign and symbol of the Satanic church is the upside down a because the a means authority. Well, when you are demonically or satanically led you have put the eight upside down. You have reversed authority and what Satan is basically saying is, God is not your authority.
Do whatever you want to do. Number three there is the rejection of moral standards that what a culture once thought as an objective moral standard, something that everybody would live by a moral consensus if you will that has slowly but surely evaporated from our midst and then finally there is a blasphemous traitorous ideology that exists in our culture that people aren't loyal at all to one another and that I think invites into the church which is supposed to be salt and light. The whole understanding of a form of godliness without the power there are people who call themselves Christ followers who are simply going through the motions.
There doing religious kinds of things but there's no miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. There is no evidence of huge life change that can take people out of darkness into Jesus marvelous life that just doesn't exist anymore. There is no power in the church and we are seeing, especially in the mainline church in America that the mainline church is slowly but surely steadily declining almost into oblivion. Now they have great resources they built up through the years because they've bought property that is of great value their selling off some of that property that allows them to exist for a longer time. But ultimately the money that allows the church to exist in power is not being given by its members. Their living off the legacy of dead members who have given their money and they built up through the years. It is in my opinion the fulfillment of a quote made by a famous theologian of the previous century FB Meyer, who said no person suddenly becomes base you don't see someone go from godliness to godlessness. Suddenly, it is a slow steady decline that happens. Well if that is true with individuals I think it's also true with churches and institutions, and cultures. No church institution or culture suddenly becomes base is a slow but steady idolization of creature over the create tour, and surely that institution, society or culture becomes base and gives evidence to second Timothy chapter 3 verses one through nine. Now I think this is a great exhortation for all of us and that is actually the verse that stood out to me the most is in verse five having the appearance of godliness but denying its power. Because with this list. It's like oh that's obvious, I'm not going to do can be around this person with basically saying these people are going to be in the church now exactly net in the end time.
You said before Tara listeners Antonine it comes with great encouragement that Jesus lots the wheat and the tears grow up together. So this is part of that discerning yet Jesus said that the enemy Satan himself sows tears in the kingdom of God. I think that includes the church.
I think it's the general culture as well and the tears are weeds that just look exactly like the wheat, except in one area, they don't bear fruit but when they are sewn in a seed with weed. They become inextricably interwoven with the wheat and it's impossible to separate. It is the only way you can ultimately solve the problem is burned down the whole field and start all over again.
Will Jesus said in Matthew 13 verses one through 13 that in the end times when he returns he will send his angels, and they will separate the wheat and the tears they will know who are the true followers of Jesus, and who art we can't do that we don't have that kind of spiritual discernment. But Jesus does have that spiritual discernment, and he also said in Matthew seven that not all those who call him Lord, Lord, are going to enter the kingdom of heaven that such billing section of Scripture.
It causes all of us to pause and ask the question just because I say Jesus is Lord. Is he truly Lord. He has to be Lord off my heart and I therefore live for him and his glory.
I find it very interesting to Jen that Jesus said it's a little bit of leaven that causes us to fall and you know a little leaven is what is necessary in order for bread to rise. It's what also can cause great harm, but it begins with just a little bit and when we allow a little bit of leaven into our culture just a little bit of evil just a little bit of sloppiness regarding God's moral standards. Eventually, like FB Meyer said no person suddenly becomes base slowly but surely that breads infected with the entire 11 hour cultures and infected with entire sin and we have to then expected Jesus imminent and returned to occur. That's what we were warned about. I'm also thinking of Rome that the nation of Rome fell from a very strong empire to a hapless society over a period of like 600 years. Again, no culture suddenly becomes base but if you look at Edwin Gibbons rise and fall of the Roman empire. There are many reasons for Rome's fall, but several of them are first of all a gross over infatuation with sports that they went to the games and became overly enthusiastic about sports events, without seeing the cultures demise around them.
I think that's something we should look at as well. Secondly, there was a gross over infatuation with sex and we see that happening in our culture as well. If you take the pornography industry. For example, it makes more money then the National Football League. The major league baseball league and the NBA national basketball Association combined route you take the three major sports leagues of our culture you combine all of the revenue successes and it doesn't even begin to touch the amount of money that is given to pornography.
So the gross over infatuation with sex is a part of our culture and again human trafficking is an example of that in America, human trafficking, the taking, especially of young children and I don't even want to talk about agenda because it's so ugly, so hurtful in my heart but nevertheless it's happening.
Everyone who's involved in the human trafficking industry trying to stop it would say that if you stop pornography, you stop trafficking. If you take away the desire you'll take away the demand and so I just know God's going to hold our culture accountable for that as we slip into the same demise as Rome. The third reason that Keith Gibbon gave was the free circuses were people were being paid not to work and see that happening all around us as well.
When you take away the desire to work when you dis-incentivize people's need and desire to work. You're going to create slothfulness in a culture and that laziness will ultimately cause that cultures demise. Now it won't happen quickly, like FB Meyer said no person suddenly becomes base but you're going to see. As Jesus said in frequency and intensity of the culture moving toward a moral demise. Thus, I think reflecting second Timothy chapter 3 verses one through nine in stark detail. Wow, I did not know that last point had heard the other team that I'm just thinking that our culture right now and some traveling that we've done and experienced. You know this hospitality through restaurants and you know what people are getting paid more right now. At minimum wage than ever before. But the service is sloppy service isn't like I'm kind of like what happened here, to our culture and it's that third point, I think tied into that where you're getting paid really not to work and there is an expectation of work producing character like nothing else and you Paul even said in his letter to the Thessalonians. If you don't work you don't eat I mean hunger is a strong motivator to work and when you start paying people not to work, you create indolence in a society and that ultimately will force the society to a demise. Now some people say to me at this point. Now wait a minute David thinks of always been bad and that's true that wherever there is sinfulness in a culture the cultures going to have a demise that what we don't have any longer is a moral consensus of Judeo-Christian moral consensus brought over from England and Western Europe to us in our initial stages that I think is embedded in our declaration and our Constitution.
It was Alexander de Tocqueville in the 1830s who traveled all around America and said America is great because Americans are good in America will cease to be great when Americans are no longer good and I think what you're seeing is that moral consensus that bound us together is no longer in existence. Now some people will say in those early years. What about slavery, I do believe with all my heart that the Constitution was formed with an understanding that slavery would soon be gotten rid of around America in all of the states what happened. The cotton gin and slavery became very lucrative because of the cotton gin, the southern states changed their mind.
I wonder if our forefathers would rewrite the Constitution today to make sure that slavery would not be allowed in our nation.
It was the natural result of a greedy nation that were still experiencing some today with the Jim Crow laws and other issues.
But until we learn how to love one another and have that moral consensus among all of ourselves that this is right and this is wrong will never have health in our culture engine over. This month we have seen a month declared as pride month and never in our history have we had a month declared to exalt sin and we see for example Paul in Philippians 3 writing to the church at Philippi and he says in Philippians 318 and 19th for many of whom I have often told you, and now tell you even with tears walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.
Their end is destruction there. God is their belly and they glory in their shame with minds set on earthly things we see around us, people who are worshiping creation, not the create tour. They were worshiping their human bodies as they think they should be worsening. Also people who let their bellies, their feelings lead their lives, not God's truth and they glory in their shame, I think, for example, I saw a pride parade in California where men dressed disgustingly in godless ways shimmering before little children. The children turning their faces almost instinctively knowing that's wrong that's godless and the moms turning their faces to have to look at that particular godlessness again. Our culture is in demise. We are moving toward Gomorrah, I think, and Jesus ultimately will have to judge it now.
The only thing that comes to mind his father forgive them for they know not what a deal this is gross and God bless and I remember when Pres. Barack Obama was in office and he lit up the White House for the first time ever in the colors of the rainbow which signified the kickoff. I believe of pride, mind, and I just thought well to eyes the energies of Lori in their shame and that's the first time a president has forced the national identity to accept something that only a small or percentage actually followed and he said he was the president for all people. That's what caused a number to turn against him. At that moment Jen.
I don't know what to say at this point except to remind Christians that we are called to be salt and light and salt. Put in meet in Jesus day was intended to keep the meat from putrefying so fast. If we are slouching toward Sodom and Gomorrah. And Jesus said that when he returns.
It will be like the days of Noah and the days of Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah, and when you look at those stories people just basically did whatever they wanted to do and they slouched toward that godlessness. It's going to be like, then when Jesus returns, but yet were called to be in the culture to try to prevent the culture from moving toward putrefaction as best we can and as we do so we are faithful to Jesus we say come soon, Lord Jesus. We await his return were ready for his return, but were involved in the world until that return actually a curse. He asked me. I'll send love and embrace truth and get our households in order and talk to our kids about what truth is not defined. Like he said pilots in our bellies, which is our feelings and we can't deny the power of the gospel and the Holy Spirit. I think those are written out here in this verse is that I read from second Timothy three and you gin think eating and everyone worship the create tour, not creation. And when you do so you'll find yourself ready when he returns. I David Chadwick this is this week's hope cast.
