It is the JR Sport Brief show on CBS Sports Radio. Happy March. Happy March Madness. Happy beginning of the NCAA tournament. That's what the hell we've been talking about for the past two hours. This is what we're going to do for the next two hours. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia.

Our super producer and host, Dave Shepherd. He's coming to you live from New York City. And we got more March Madness in front of you. A matter of fact, we only got two games left for tonight.

Let me give you an update. They're both beat downs. UCLA is smashing UNC Asheville 79 to 49. And then if we head over to the Midwest region, Penn State, it's a little bit of a surprise. They are smashing Texas A&M 69 to 46. About five minutes left in that game. A little over three minutes, about three minutes left in UCLA's victory. They can't stop the bleeding fast enough and just get her over with for both of these teams and both of these games. Over the past 10 minutes, we had two other games go to finals. Tennessee, it took a little bit of a heart attack, but Tennessee holds on and they beat the Ragin' Cajuns 58 to 55. And then if we slide back over from the east to the Midwest region, we had the Cougars, Houston.

Unfortunately, with no Sasser, we know that they're not going to be with no Sasser. We know that he was going to be kind of a game time decision with his groin injury. He aggravated his groin injury, and so it was tough for Houston. They edged out Northern Kentucky 63 to 52.

They didn't start to stretch that lead until a little later in the game. A sloppy game for Houston as they had 17 turnovers, gave up 18 offensive rebounds, and they are going to take on Auburn on Saturday. Auburn beat Iowa 83 to 75.

This is a tough one. And as we continue on here, I told you about Tennessee beating the Ragin' Cajuns, they got Duke next. And we know that Duke, if you paid attention earlier today, Duke beat up on Oral Roberts 74 to 51.

And so we've had a busy start to March Madness. I'm almost sure and certain that workplace productivity went down today. But with a lot of people sitting at home, work from, Shep, what do you call work from home? Is there a work from home? Is that what it's called? You and I don't know what it's called, but because we don't do it, but it is called remote work.

Yes. Remote work. Yeah, I guess remote work means no work gets done when college basketball is going on. And so if you give it another five minutes, another 10 minutes, every game from Thursday will be a wrap. And we've had some good ones.

I mean, the day pretty much started off pretty wild. The first game of note, Virginia coming down and losing to Furman. We had Princeton go out and upset Arizona.

There was no shock here. I was hoping for an upset, but I know it was not going to happen. Kansas beat the living hell out of Howard 96 to 68, but I got to give Howard credit.

Howard was hanging in there for the entire first half. Maryland, they beat West Virginia. We had some good games and now the night is about to come to a close.

Alabama smashed Texas A&M, Corpus Christi 96 to 75. It's been a busy day. Hey Shep, have you enjoyed the games today? Absolutely. I mean, look, let's be honest. I mean, Furman has put themselves on the map. Princeton has put themselves on the map. We think of Princeton and I'm talking the old basketball heads here. We think of Pete Carroll.

You know, we think of those individuals. But so the fact that, I mean, in the Ivy, what I'm used to is seeing Tommy Amaker and Harvard making some noise. So to see a new kid on the block, a new team at top of the mountain top representing the Ivy Leagues playing as well as they have. You think of Princeton, you think of John Thompson the third.

So good for them for making a name for themselves in 2023 to keep being able to compete with the top schools in Division 1 basketball, given the academic prowess and standards that they have to live up to. Wait, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. In a different way.

You just, you just said congratulations to the nerds. Oh yeah. Baseball. You can also, but you know, listen, I mean, Georgetown isn't exactly jock haven either, nor is Duke.

I know. Is that why Patrick Ewing got his ass fired? Well, he won what, won? It might've been two Big East games in his last two seasons, if I'm not mistaken. Then he lose like what, how many, 20, 21 in a row? Three, nine?

It was, it was too many in a row. I mean, but here's what I know, JR. The guy, you know, listen, the guy didn't forget how to coach overnight. We don't, I'm not saying you're saying this, but I don't hear anybody alluding to the fact that Patrick Ewing did win a Big East title as a head coach.

So he can coach. He just had a rough stretch. I remember something. You remember, remember the Mad Hatter? The Mad Hatter? Yeah. Les Miles.

Oh, I was gonna, I think it was a rap about a name of the Mad Hatter. Right. Let me ask you a question. How did he look?

How did he look when he went to Kansas? Oh, you know the answer to that. Why, why, why are we moving to a different sport? Because the point is when you don't have talent, you're not going to be able to coach.

I don't care who you are. When Patrick Ewing had injuries happen and unfold, unfortunately for him these past two seasons, he looked like he couldn't coach. Patrick Ewing can coach.

I said that, I said that last week and it sucks, but the fact is it's going to be tough for anybody. So in the first hour of the show, we went through all of these coaches who are now gone. Like it's 2023, March Madness is underway.

It's the NCAA tournament. There ain't going to be no Coach K. There's no Beyheim. At least for now, Jay Wright is not here. Bill Self, we had Kansas win the game today. Bill Self wasn't even on the sidelines. He ain't as old as some of the other guys I mentioned. He's 60, but he already has a heart issue.

Needed two stints put into his chest. I mean, we're in a different era, a different time. And so it's more difficult to recruit. We can blame NIL and money and payments, et cetera.

I said that last week. Patrick Ewing is the man. He can coach. But what good is anybody if you can't recruit or if you got a bunch of young guys who all they want is money and to have their ass kissed? Is Patrick Ewing going to kiss some kid's ass?

That's a rhetorical question, right? No, we know he's not kissing nobody's ass. He's one of the 40 greatest players in the history of the sport. He ain't kissing an amateur's ass when it comes to basketball. He might punch a kid in the mouth, but he won't do that. We'll leave that to other Big Men coaches in the Big Ten. Oh, well, damn.

I was going to go even further back. I mean, I saw a guy once kind of choking. But anyway, excuse me, what? No, there was a coach at one time. He choked the kid.

Remember him? Yeah, I was coughing out the kid. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Neil Reed. Yeah. He choked him.

I've seen a guy do chairs. Oh, anyway, he's still alive. What is he doing? So he does in all sources. And you know this, he does a podcast? No, no, he has. He's actually had some severe health issues the last few years. Oh, so why we haven't seen him?

Yeah, correct. No, he's not. He's not with it nearly the same way that he was a few years ago.

How he's got to be in. He ought to be 80 something. Well, he's an old.

He's an old 82. Yeah. Yeah. Isaiah Thomas loves him.

Well, when he wasn't cursing at him. Yes. I don't. I mean, what else?

I'm trying to find a silver lining here, right? That's it. You know, it's interesting, JR. I mean, you want to talk about college basketball coaches. I mean, you think of wooden, you think of Coach K. But you give Bobby Knight those guys' players, he's the greatest coach in the history of the sport. Like Isaiah Thomas was 81. I mean, I mean, come on, Scott May, Keith Smart, like those were his respective best players on the 70, 75. And then the, excuse me, the 76 team, which was the last undefeated team.

And then, of course, that last team in 87. Well, we say this all the time. It's all about the players you have out there. Like, if you come through and you coaching me, you're going to lose. Like, you ain't winning nothing. So it's facts. And you know what?

In mentioning all of these, I don't want to use that word, older coaches. There's a guy still going today. Like he's at, we done went through, hold on, are the games finished? Okay. How about this?

The bleeding has stopped. UCLA beat UNC Asheville, 86 to 53. That is your final score. And so the only game that we have left here for tonight, the hell is this game? There's so many games going on. Penn State, and this is just a matter of formality. Penn State is beating Texas A&M 74 to 53, a little more than two minutes left in the game.

And yeah, so we'll, we'll have that one done momentarily. I can't believe, I feel like I've been watching basketball all damn day, which I have, but one game that is going to take place today. And this is a coach. He's 70 years old. I just told you there's no coach K. There's no behind. There's no J. Wright. Kansas is here, but self is not coaching.

We don't know if and when we'll see him out there on the sidelines. Rick Pitino is still here. Rick Pitino is 70 years old. I know Rick Pitino is from New York City.

He's a New York guy. Rick Pitino has coached every and anywhere where a basketball will bounce. Rick Pitino, Kentucky, the New York Knicks, at least he won there.

At least that one counts. He was there with the Celtics, Antoine Walker and Providence. A couple of years ago, Rick Pitino was over in Greece coaching one of the most storied franchises in European basketball, Panathinaikos.

He'd been everywhere. A couple of years ago, basically at the beginning of the pandemic, Rick Pitino went back to college because he got the boot from Louisville. Rick Pitino is coaching Iona. I don't know how many people outside of, maybe even New York, can identify Iona. I know where Iona is because it's on the other side of the spectrum. Where I used to live, it's in New Rochelle.

Ain't nobody know the Iona Gales. They're going to take on UConn later on Friday. But the point is here, Rick Pitino is still here. And Rick Pitino, in speaking to the media earlier on Thursday, Rick Pitino told everybody, he's like, hey folks, listen, I don't want to coach until I'm 80 years old. I'm like, whoa, you got that much patience? You got that much energy?

You want to deal with all of this for the next 10 years? And then he jokingly said, ah, yeah, I may not, I may not make it all the way there, but I want to coach until I'm 80. Jim Bahon got to 78.

And every time he spoke to the media, it was like, oh, he wanted to go to the bathroom. 78 years old. Bobby Knight, we just talked about Bobby Knight, he's 82 years old. Bobby Knight was 67 when he stopped. Jim Calhoun was 69 when he called it a rap at UConn and Iona will play UConn, ironically.

The great John Wooden. 64 years old when they won that last championship in 75. And he's just like, man, I'm sick of winning titles. I'm done with this crap. But Rick Pitino was like, hey, I want to hang out until I'm 80. Matter of fact, don't take my word for it. This is Rick Pitino. It's not as easy as people think.

They don't think that. I've been through the ACC, the Big East, the Metro, I think. The AAC, the Big East, I said two different times. So I've been through the SEC and now the Mac. I've been through the Boston University one, whatever that was back then. So I've been through a lot of conferences.

So it's not going to blow me away any conference or anything because I've been through it. I've also coached the Knicks and the Celtics. Yeah, we know you'd have been coaching for a long, long time.

And he wants to add another 10 years there. He was asked by the media about all these rumors running around that when Iona season is done. Come on, Iona ain't winning no championship.

I'm sorry. That he's going to leave Iona and go to Queens, New York, and coach St. John's. Like Rick Pitino's just a career coach. I mean, a lot of coaches. Yeah, a coach is a career coach.

You go where the job is. Rick Pitino is like, is he still trying to clean up from Louisville? Is he trying to add another championship?

Is it going to take place at St. John's? I mean, what am I supposed to do, carve up Ron Artest and Mark Jackson? What am I doing here? Where's Chris Mullen? I don't, Rick Pitino doesn't have anything better to do at this point in life. And to think about trying to coach until he's 80, God bless him.

If he has the energy, the stamina, the wherewithal to do it, more power to him. But for me, like I'm ready to see young guys. Like I don't want to see Rick Pitino on the sidelines. What is he going to do?

Arrange? Well, he didn't arrange the strippers. He said he didn't. He didn't. Hey Shepa, he didn't arrange the strippers. He just didn't know about it, right? Not what he said? That's what he said. What he said we will conclude and deduce is a lot different from what took place in reality. I think we can both connect the dots and read the writing on the wall.

Yes. So Rick Pitino, he didn't arrange the ladies at Louisville, but he didn't know that they were being arranged. He didn't know anything about it. And so unfortunately for Louisville, that championship, damn, time flies. That championship from about 10 years ago, it poof, it doesn't, it doesn't exist. And so I guess Rick Pitino was trying to make up for lost time. He's had to go to Greece. He's had to travel around. Now he's up in New Rochelle and, and now he, who knows when Iona's done, maybe he'll go to St. John's. Yeah, but Rick Pitino, he ain't following in Coach K's shoes. He's not following in Jay Wright's shoes or, or Jim Baham, who's 78.

They had to tell him, all right, that's enough of you. Rick Pitino is just, he's just going to keep going until he can't go no more. Shout outs to everybody in New Rochelle. And we're going to watch Iona play. They're going to take on the Yukon Huskies. That'll take place this afternoon. I think we got a final.

Yep. All of our games tonight, they are done. Penn State, in the final game of Thursday, beats Texas A&M, the final score 76 to 59. And so day one of the field of 64 is a wrap. We got a whole nother set of games on Friday in the opening round. And then we got another round of 32 starting on Saturday and Sunday. This is March Madness. UCLA, you might recall last year, they got beat by another UNC, but not Asheville, and they weren't going to get away this time. They beat up Asheville and they started off hot like fire. I'm talking a 14 to nothing start for UCLA.

I want you to take a listen to this. The man who can knock down all the shots, David Singleton. He knocked down a three early courtesy of Westwood One. Campbell dribbles up, gets across the timeline, races down the left side, skips a pass right side Singleton. Open look at a three.

Yes, sir. 14-0 UCLA. Timeout UNC Asheville. The Bruins overwhelming the Bulldogs in the opening three minutes of the game. Yeah, they had no damn, they had no chance.

I'm sorry. This game a little bit closer, much closer. Matter of fact, I told you about 30 minutes ago, Tennessee, the volunteers, they beat Louisiana, the Ragin Cajuns 58 to 55. Duke is going to be next for Tennessee, and we know that Duke earlier today, they put a spanking on Oral Roberts, the final score there 74 to 51. And then about 30 minutes ago as well, Houston, they beat Northern Kentucky 63 to 52. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Marcus Sasser, he re-aggravated his groin injury. That was a, that was a, they didn't even know he was going to play. And he went out there and he wasn't able to get through the game. Houston had a difficult time getting through this one. 17 turnovers.

What's on your mind? This is the best time of the year, and I'm not a huge college hoops fan in general. But there's nothing like March Madness. I'm a USC guy and kind of plugging off what you were saying about getting younger up-and-coming coaches.

And although Andy Enfield wasn't necessarily young, he had a, he had a run at Florida Gulf Coast. And I just want to pick your brain on, like, how do universities find these entrusting coaches? How do they find them? I wasn't super excited. How do they vet, I guess?

How do they vet? Because it could be a fluke run, these up-and-coming, it could be something. But I wasn't super excited when Ant was hired just because you never know.

I wanted it more established. In a lot of cases, you have coaches. Most coaches are former players.

And that's, they bounce around. I mean, some of the names that we've already talked about, you have someone like Patrick Ewing, who obviously played for Georgetown, was an alum, went to the NBA, is one of the greatest players ever, coached forever as an assistant in the NBA, and gets hired at Georgetown after the Thompson family kind of moves out the way. Unfortunately, nobody lived up to John Thompson.

His son didn't. But that's how Pat got the job. You know, I just told you about Duke beating up on Oral Roberts today. John Shire played for the team and was an assistant there for Coach K for years. We have someone like Hubert Davis, who's an alum. He wants to go back into the tournament after going to the championship last year. I can tell you right here in Atlanta, we have Mighty Mouse, Damon Stoudemire. He don't have a damn thing to do with Georgia Tech, but he's going to be coming in to lead the way.

And so in a lot of cases, you have former players, you have lifers, you have folks who have coached. Stoudemire coached at Pacific at one time, and now he's going to be over at Tech. I saw Damon Stoudemire actually last Saturday night. He was on the bench.

The Boston Celtics were playing the Atlanta Hawks, and I saw him right behind the bench. And then two days later, he didn't have to leave town. He just went across the street up the road to coach Tech.

So there's not a one size fits all, but I'm actually thrilled and happy that we're in a place where we get, I don't know what time he was changing the engine. I'm happy that we can watch new coaches. Like there's always a time that like call it a wrap. Like every time Jim Baham spoke, he screamed like, I don't want to be here anymore. He screamed, I'm ready to leave. I'm ready to go. Well, I don't know if I want to leave.

They don't tell me if I'm, well, it's up to them if I'm going to, no, just leave, bro. I've just been lucky to be able to. Oh my God. Is that from a horror movie, Sheple? Oh my God. Oh, that's a 70 year old coach you referenced. What did he say? Let's hear it again. I've just been lucky to be able to coach this long. So let me ask you, was that the press conference after the loss or was that the retirement press conference?

That was when he was trying to stick it to the university by them, by forcing him out and him trying to make them look like the bad guys. I'm glad he's gone. I really am.

I'll be laughing, but look here, Jay. The Texas Longhorn, number two seed, they got this coach, this new coach. They seem like they're on fire. I like how the way they beat Colgate and they got to play 10th state number 10 seed. And I want to just get your take on that. Well, unfortunately, I didn't see them take on Colgate today because I realized they was whooping that ass. And I said, I'm not going to watch. So I'm being honest. I'm not going to sit here and lie to you. I said, I said, Texas and Colgate. I said, no, thank you. And I know they beat them by like 20. And so one game that I probably am going to watch, knowing that Penn State just kind of surprised everybody with their own victory tonight, I'll probably watch that game.

You would probably be able to give a better assessment than I would. Okay, Jay. And I like hearing Shep. I missed him too. And Jay, and I want to say this overall. It was funny when you was talking about Rick Patino. He being old. He kind of reminds me of Nick Saban because he kind of old too.

So, you know, we got some old coaches up in there. But yeah, I told you, I'm going to stick with you. I'm going to hang with you. Well, thank you. Shep is right here.

Well, Jay, let me ask you a question. Yeah. You going to ask me about the old coach?

No. Don't do that. Okay, I won't. I won't. Of what you know about Rodney Terry, he's not getting a lot of love, but he took over a tumultuous situation.

What he did at Fresno State, what he did at UTEP, do you see this being a long-term solution for them? Well, I don't know. I have no idea. That's very honest of you.

How the hell am I supposed to know? I also know he's a black head coach, so I have no idea. Because he did some things. They could have given it to a no-name coach. He's done some things in his coaching career. Texas got very lucky. To me, Chris Beard should have stayed at Texas Tech, because he was rolling over there. Should have won the national championship.

He was rolling that much. But Rodney Terry, what he has put up with this year and how he has been able to steady a very rocky, tumultuous boat, he deserves a lot more credit than what he's getting right now. We always think of Texas and we think of football. We forget. I know you know this, but we talk about LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Durant and TJ Ford. I mean, that's a basketball powerhouse that no one ever talks about. Do we want to call them a powerhouse or do we want to talk about individual talents that have come out of there? They've made a Final Four. I'm not saying they're Duke or UNC or Kansas, but who is?

Yeah, but when you start talking about Blue Bloods and you want to call, what's the difference? Do we call them a powerhouse and the other teams are just Blue Bloods? The Blue Bloods, the Kentuckys, the Kansases, the UNCs, the Dukes, I mean, those are iconic institutions. The UCLAs, yeah, those are iconic institutions.

That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't put the Longhorns in that category. I wouldn't.

Would you? No, I would not put them in that category, but I do think Texas gets drastically overlooked in terms of basketball. Like Rick Barnes. I know he couldn't win the big game ever, it seemed like, but they had some really good seasons at Texas. It's one of the schools in all the college sports that actually has a really good basketball program and a really good football program.

There's not many of them. Florida had that run in the late 2000s, but other than that, it's really difficult to do. Yeah, because when you start talking about the South, it's football. Just this football.

Just what it is. I mean, I can talk about the Bulldogs here. They right down the road until I'm blue in the face and ain't nobody think about Bulldogs basketball. And granted, thank God, the football team just got over the hump and finally won a championship. But outside of Anthony Edwards popping up, even when he was there, it's just like, whatever, nobody cares. So it's football down here in the South, man. So Texas can keep on rolling, but everybody will always talk about what takes place on the grass and not the hardwood. It's unfortunate, but for Rodney Terry, I certainly hope he gets the job. I'm still trying to, well, I know how Chris Beard got his, but that's a conversation for another day.

What's up? Hey, I hate to be a buzzkill about all this, but what do you think of this statement? College basketball or college sports in general is the most exploitative industry in the United States of America. Yeah, it's been that way for the better part of, I don't know, forever. And now they finally have cracked a little bit in regards to changing it. Yeah. Yeah, historically speaking, I'd say so. But they're moving in the right direction, even though it's going to take a turtle's pace. Would you agree with that?

Yeah. I mean, I just have a hard time watching it, knowing all the people who are making so much money off these kids. And these kids don't make any money. And it's just disgusting.

It really is. All the betting, all the coaches, all the universities, even right down to the people selling popcorn in the stadiums. I mean, every single person making money off these kids. So do you not watch at all because of that? Or do you, are you kind of resigned to it? I have a really hard time watching with a clear conscience.

I really do. I mean, I love professional sports, but college sports, like for instance, if one of these kids got hurt, they could lose, they lose their scholarship. I mean, you know, football, even worse, I mean, they should at least give those kids lifelong health insurance. I mean, the fact that these kids are risking their lives playing football, most of them making no money in front of 80,000 people where everybody else is getting paid. But the tournament is also a really good example of it because it's so, everybody's watching it. There's so much advertising and there's so much betting and there's so many billions of dollars. Yeah.

Billions would be correct. And, and most of the players don't get a penny of it. I mean, how can that be even legal? It's just so corrupt.

Well, what do you want them? Well, there's, there's so many complaints, you know, we could talk about this for three hours, right? I know. The reason, the reason I thought of it as I just read this great book about Rick Pitino, it's called Last Temptation of Rick Pitino. I don't know if you've read it, but it gets into all the Louisville scandals over the years while he was there.

It's a, and it's an indict, it's a really good book. It's an indictment of college sports in general, college basketball, especially. You know what?

You are not, you are not wrong at all, Justin, in regards to college sports. And that's, that's something that has always turned me off as well until recently. I've been an advocate. I remember when I started this show and Shep, Shep, hey, guess what? We're finally coming up on a full three years, okay Shep? I knew it was, I knew it was about that time of year. Yeah, it's coming up. I don't know.

Maybe it's a couple of days from now, whatever it is, but I'm going to be here for a full three years, Frank, in a couple of days. And I remember when I started talking about how college athletes deserve a piece of the pie, they deserve to make money. Do you know how many people would call me up and tell me, oh, they're getting a scholarship.

Oh, they should be happy with what they get. Oh, it's ruining the purity of the game. That's ridiculous.

I don't, I don't get that many calls as much anymore because I think a lot of people realize the fact that you're not able to make any money is crap. There is no, there's no defense for it. It's garbage.

Okay. And so now we have NIL and it took years. It took lawsuits. It took decades for us to even get that. It's, I'll put it to you this way.

And now you got me, you got me revved up now, Frank, just keep listening. Thank you for calling from Illinois. The fact that a student athlete could not have a job was criminal. The fact that a student athlete could not have a YouTube channel to make money. Hey, I got a YouTube channel guys.

I'm gonna, I'm gonna talk about Pokemon cards. The fact that a student athlete couldn't have a damn YouTube channel was criminal. And now we got the NCAA.

What do they do now? Laissez-faire hands off. Okay. We got to let them make money. Okay. We don't have anything to do with nothing anymore. After you done milked and built them and ran them for every resource and labor that you could. Disgusting. And it took lawsuits and fighting.

All these rich, you know, what's you can fill in the, you know, what, what you want. System was garbage and it's going to take time. The fact that they're now allowed to make money is, is a shame. And it took so long for so many people to even be accepting of that fact.

It's a shame. What's pure. Well, if we start paying the athletes, it takes away the purity. No, it ain't fair. Cut that garbage out. Ain't nothing America free. If I'm over here busting my ass, you should pay me for it. Not take money off my back.

That's always been garbage. And it's going to take time. And this should be the next step.

This should be the next step. Everybody who participates in these sponsorships, and I know the companies who do it, I've gotten money from them. So it don't matter if it's, if it's Capital One or Reese's or Coke paying all these big bucks, there should be a trickle down.

Every human being on these teams should get a little bit of that. I don't care if it's a couple of hundred dollars, but you know what, that starts to add up to a lot that nobody wants to give up. Schools don't want to give up that money. The conferences don't want to give up that money. The television distributors are paying. They don't want to give up that money.

Everybody wants to do what a lot of human beings typically do. I'll keep the money. I'll keep the most money. And if I could bamboozle the people at the bottom, then so damn be it. Thank you, Frank, for getting me all riled up. I just, I hate, I hate people who take advantage of other people.

I hate it. And this is the system, this has been the system of college athletics. And they've just started to change it.

And the minimum change? Okay, we'll let them make money now. We won't pay them, but we'll let them make money. And now everybody wants to run around like chickens with their heads cut off and go, oh yeah, well, uh, well now they're making money and it's so unorganized. Well, why is it unorganized? Because everybody who was so happy to just strip and take money and not allow them to, they didn't want to put in parameters. They were so busy fighting athletes making money.
