JR explains why it's imperative that the Ravens be smart when it comes to giving Lamar Jackson his contract

You're listening to the JR Sportbrief on CBS Sports Radio. You're listening to the JR Sportbrief on CBS Sports Radio. I am JR. This is CBS Sports Radio. It is the JR Sportbrief show and I'm coming to you live from the Rocket Mortgage Studios when you need cash out of your home and a simple way to get it.

Rocket Can. Much love to everybody listening all over North America. I don't care where you at. West coast, east coast, mountains, the south. You could be in the north. You could be really up in the north. You could be on a beach right now.

You could be on a chain of beaches. Good for you, okay? I can tell you what's good for all of us. The fact that I'm going to be here hanging out with you for the next three hours. It is a four hour show.

I get started 10 p.m eastern time, 7 p.m pacific. I'm here with super producer and host Dave Shepherd. More importantly, I'm here with you. There ain't no show without you. You in the car. You in the truck. You on patrol. You at work. You in the back. You in the front. I don't care.

You could be side to side. We got a lot to do. How do you reach me here at CBS Sports Radio?

It's simple. Do you have a phone? You know how to use one? I know you got a radio, but you have a phone. You can call me. 855-212-4CBS.

That's 855-212-4CBS. You can also get a hold of me if you don't have a phone. You got a computer? You have internet access? If you have a phone, you probably do.

Probably, maybe, could have internet access. That's at JR Sport Brief. I'm on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Here's the deal. It's Wednesday night. We're pulling up. I'm going to get you closer to Thursday morning. And every Wednesday night into Thursday morning, I bring you a new top six list. About an hour from now, exactly an hour from now, I'll bring you this week's top six list. The NFL released its top 100 players as voted on by the players. And the players half asked their list. Okay. They, they fill in multiple names, but two thirds of the players don't even vote. We don't know the full criteria.

And so tonight I'm going to do it the right way. I'm going to give you a top six list. The best players in the NFL heading into the 2022 season. Not guys that you would draft for the next five years, not handing out lifetime achievement awards, but just who the hell are the best players? Who's the most dominant?

We'll give you that list next hour. As we opened up the show tonight, right before I went on air, we had a legend doing legendary things with another legend in attendance that happens to be Serena Williams. She won her second round matchup. Yes, she did. She won again. That really wasn't expected to win the first time, especially as she entered into the U S open with a record of one and four. She's only participated in five tennis matches for the entire year. Serena Williams pretty much let everybody know, look, I'm winding down.

She didn't want to use the word retirement. There was a big to do about her win on Monday night. And then she wins again tonight. The woman that she beat, Annette Contevit, ranked number two in the world. Took her, took her three sets to win 761. She lost the second two to six, and then she was dominant to finish things out six to two.

She was so dominant at the end of the game that she was pretty much asked on ESPN afterwards. Hey, Serena, and this isn't something that you ask a legend. Serena, were you surprised by, by your performance and, and, and how did you do it? Why did you do it?

How did you accomplish it? Listen to Serena's answer. Well, I'm a pretty good player. I'm a pretty good player. You know, this is what I do best.

I love a challenge, love rising to the challenge. And yeah, I haven't played many matches, but I, I've been practicing really well. And my last few matches, it just wasn't coming together. I'm like, but this isn't me. And you know, the last couple of matches here in New York, it's really come together. Maybe I should have traveled with you all for all those years. Oh, she's, she's enjoying it.

And she pretty much told everybody via US open radio. She's really enjoying this moment, especially as these moments are coming to a close. Listen, honestly, I'm just looking at it as a bonus. I don't have anything to prove. I don't have anything to win. And I have absolutely nothing to lose. And honestly, I never get to play like this since 98, really.

Literally I've had an X on my back since 99. So it's kind of fun. And I really enjoy just coming out and enjoying it. And it's been a long time since I've been able to do that. Oh, boss life.

I ain't got nothing to prove. Serena Williams. I'm enjoying this and she's right. She's accomplished so much. She will be in action again on Friday, third round, as she tries to continue to advance in singles action in the US open, which is pretty much the finale of her career. And then she will also be in action tomorrow, Thursday with her sister in doubles. So she'll have a little bit of a warmup. Tiger Woods was in attendance in her family's box to sit and watch Serena play. And every time that she steps out onto the court could very well be her last moment.

Last hour, if you missed a minute, if you missed a second, you can always hit rewind on the free Odyssey app. We also talked about Tony La Russa. It's been announced and shared by the Chicago White Sox that he is out indefinitely for the rest of the season, not because he is pulling a muscle.

We have no idea, could be, but he's having a personal medical emergency of which we do not know the nature of. And not a surprise here. Tony La Russa is going to be 78 years old pretty much in a few weeks.

We are staring at September in the face. He turns 78 in October, a questionable hire by Jerry Rheinsdorf in the first place. He's irritated his own players. He has irritated the fan base. He's made questionable decisions from the dugout, especially some of those intentional walks when guys have actually been up in the count, falling asleep in a dugout.

Tony La Russa is accomplished enough. Go stay home. We mentioned Deion Sanders in Jackson State. Looks like they found accommodations following the flooding in Jackson, Mississippi. Much love to everybody out in Mississippi and Jackson who've been affected by the flooding. They are all set to take on Florida A&M this Sunday down in Miami. And so good luck to everybody at Jackson State. Much love to everybody out in Jackson, Mississippi.

You want to holler at me? 855-212-4CBS. That's 855-212-4CBS. As we continue on with the show, before we get to the top six next hour, we're going to talk about Lamar Jackson. We had a call.

E-man. E-man called from Maryland and he asked me, he said, look, I don't have any confidence right now in the Ravens. I'm losing confidence that they will A, surround Lamar Jackson with weapons and that B, that they will not get priced out. And that the longer that they wait to put together a deal, the more cost prohibitive it's going to be to the Ravens organization. And I'm going to talk about that because recently Lamar Jackson, he hasn't said a lot about his contract, but he has dropped the little breadcrumbs, a few breadcrumbs on social media as to how he feels. Is he going to stay with the Ravens if he were to leave? What are his favorite teams?

He's, he said quite a few things that let us know what he's looking for in a deal. And I'm going to share that. Before I do that, we do have some callers here on the line.

Let's go ahead and hit them. Greg, he's calling from Michigan. You're on CBS Sports Radio.

Hey, JR, Mr. Positive. Hope you're doing well.

You sound great. And I love your take on Serena. I was talking to Shep and I've got to say this. Ali is the most revolutionary figure in sports history. But when it comes to dominance, I have to say that Serena is in the top five easily. You got Jordan, you got Gretzky, you got maybe Phelps, you got Serena and you could speculate on others, but I got to tell you, my friend Serena has dominated her sport.

Like arguably those three or four, maybe I can throw my LeBron, but you really got to give kudos to her. And real quick, your 12 o'clock hour, I'm thinking Josh Allen, number one for me. Okay. What say you, my friend? Well, we'll see about that, Greg. I'll give you the full top six list. We're going to get there next hour. Is Josh Allen even on my top six list of, of top NFL players coming into this season?

You got to wait to see next hour. And when it comes down to Serena, dominance in the sport, I think it's arguable. I would say so, but I wouldn't go ahead and put up a tooth and nail fight. If someone wanted to say Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, I wouldn't put up a fight, but this is something that I would pretty much die on a hill about when it comes to influence surrounding the game. There, there is no peer. There is no one comparable to Serena Williams, what she's done. And I would go as far to say that also exists on the men's side as well. She is an icon, no different than what we've seen. Tiger Woods was in attendance watching her play after the match. Tiger Woods was, was kind of in the backstage area with Serena Williams. And there's a lot of similarities. This is pretty much what Tiger Woods has been to the game of golf, iconic, flat, period, simple, similar to what Michael Jordan has been to the game of basketball, iconic. And I know that there are a lot of younger players, a lot of younger individuals who may not remember Michael Jordan in that scope. There was a point in time where he was one of the most famous human beings and still is on earth.

And this is before we had a World Wide Web or social media to connect us all. Really. Mike is calling from Florida. You're on CBS Sports Radio. What's up, Mike? Hey brother, how you doing? I'm good. What's going on?

Not too much, man. You guys went down a bunch of different wormholes since the first time I called and I messed up and, and hit the wrong button. I wanted to call and talk about a role just shot me and getting a dumb ass.

Oh, I'm sorry. No, I'll say dumb ass. You just say dumb.

He got a dumb ass tattoo. Yeah, sure. Go ahead.

Keep going. Bro, my half of my body's covered in tattoos. I ain't got a hundred million dollars and I ain't never had an infection. Oh, well, you, what are you saying that he tried to give himself the tattoo?

What happened? No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm, I'm just saying he, he's a fool.

Yes, I agree. How are you going to get an infection when you got all that money and I ain't never made a hundred thousand dollars a year and I ain't, and I got all these tattoos and I ain't never had an infection. Well, well, well, I'm happy for you, Mike, but I'm going to take it a step further. How about what's even worse is that he had the thought to get a tattoo in the course of the regular season when the New York Yankees are trying to win a world series. Why are you trying, not trying, why are you getting a tattoo done right now?

You couldn't wait until, I don't know, let's say November 10th when the season is over. And I'll tell you another thing that I've noticed in the last 10, 15 years is these pictures that get tattooed, they never tattoo their pitching arm. That's the money maker.

That's the money maker. Yeah. Well, no different than saying, Hey, I want to put a tattoo on my leg and I need the land on it. So, um, it's, uh, no, absolutely. You, you said it the first time and thank you, Mike, for calling from Florida. He's a dumb ass.

No problem. He's a dumb ass. You get, what are you getting a tattoo for? Here's something very simple. I think most people understand. I talk for a living. I sit here with you every single weeknight and I talk about sports, right? My job is to speak. I talk. If I lost my voice, well, guess what? I have to take a night off.

Thank God that hasn't happened. I take good care of myself. I go to the dentist. Yeah, people talk about sports, right?

They talk about sports. I go to the dentist. Yeah. People go to the dentist. Me too.

You know what? I'm not going to go to the dentist, especially if I might need a procedure done. I start at 10 PM Eastern seven Pacific. Most dentists stay. They ain't sticking around in the evening, but if I have an option for a dentist appointment, I'm not going to book the last one. I'm not going to say, Oh, well, let me have a root canal.

Well, yeah, just, just extract a tooth, you know, put some jewelry in my mind. I'm not going to say, do any of that two hours before I have to go on air an hour before I have to go on air. I'm not going to do that. Why? Because it's harmful potentially to my job, to my profession, to what I'm obligated to do. And so for a role this Chapman to potentially manipulate and try to alter his body and come down with an injury, an injured or infected tattoo.

Yeah. Let's put that on the list of some of the dumbest injuries that we have ever heard in the world of sports. You thought Fernando Tatis Jr., you know, testing positive for a drug to treat his haircut infection was ridiculous. Or if you recall Glen Allen Hill in his fear of spiders and breaking a table and cutting himself in glass. And if you thought that was bad, if you thought Joel Zumaya injuring himself playing a video game where the pitcher, Joel Zumaya, my friends in Detroit know exactly what I'm talking about. This man developed carpal tunnel from playing a video game. He couldn't go play baseball because he developed, I'm gonna say it again, carpal tunnel. Could you imagine, let's throw it back.

I don't know. Just let me throw out a year. Could you imagine Michael Jordan missing a game for the Chicago Bulls because he played too much Nintendo in 1989 and he got carpal tunnel in his wrist. Michael Jordan was playing too many Super Mario Brothers and now his wrist is jacked up. Could you imagine? Yeah, we got some dumb ass injuries. Go ahead and add that one to the list.

An infected tattoo. It's ridiculous. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on CBS Sports Radio. I'm gonna leave the phone lines open.

855-212-4CBS. When we come back, I'm gonna get into details about Lamar Jackson. What did he say or share online that might make you go, damn, is he gonna get paid?

Your credit to your profession. You're one of the rare radio personalities that actually balances facts with whatever college you call me with. I'm also calling for Pearland, Texas. So Pearland, Texas loves you.

Call in now at 855-212-4CBS. And I love Pearland, Texas. Shout out to all my folks out in the Houston metropolitan area. Shout out to everybody on the loop. Shout out to everybody inside and outside the loop. Shout out to Texas period.

And speaking of Texas, this is what I'm about to say is not going to happen, but it will involve the Dallas Cowboys, I'll tell you momentarily. Right before we went to break, I told you about Lamar Jackson. One of our callers last hour asked about Lamar Jackson, E-Man from Maryland. What's up, Maryland? I love Maryland too. I saw those guys on the jet skis in the Inner Harbor treating it like it's Miami, Florida. What are they doing up there?

But anyway, I'll be up at the Inner Harbor soon. Lamar Jackson, we know the deal. No contract as of yet with the Baltimore Ravens. He'd love to have a deal in the contract before the season gets going. I don't want to call this similar to an Aaron Judge situation, but he's going to shut things down, at least in terms of his negotiating. He also has no formal agent.

His mom and a lawyer is obviously helping him go through the contract. And this is not a shock. But as we have pretty much pulled up to the start of the regular season, we're about seven days away. Thursday, the games get going.

We're a couple hours away from Thursday. People have opinions on Twitter. Lamar Jackson is not Kevin Durant on Twitter, but he is also certainly someone who is active. And there have been fans who have tweeted at Lamar, of which there are many. And Lamar Jackson has taken some time to answer and respond to these fans. A lot of the tweets that he's receiving have to do with his contract status, his deal, what it's going to be, what it should be, what it shouldn't be, what's going to happen. E-Man from Maryland called and said, yeah, I'm concerned that the Ravens are not going to spend, that they're screwing up the situation with Lamar. He did not have confidence that DaCosta, Viscotti, that they're going to hand over a check. That's good enough for Lamar to stay.

And that the longer that they wait, the more that they're going to have to pay. And so Lamar responded to a fan on Twitter. There's a fan who pretty much said the same thing.

Not confident in the Ravens. Man, Lamar might leave. And this fan said, yeah, Lamar is from Florida. He probably want to be a member of the Miami Dolphins. Lamar Jackson did not need to respond to this anonymous fan, but he did.

Lamar Jackson says, I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan, but the Dolphins were second, no doubt. Okay. Well, a little innocuous of a tweet, but, well, thank you for letting the world know. Yeah, sure.

Most players would probably want to play home unless home is a distraction. No shock there. And then we got a little bit more of an inkling, which should not be a shock or a surprise. Lamar Jackson let the whole world know in response to a fan saying a fully guaranteed contract to Lamar Jackson is bad for business. Lamar simply said, you don't love Lamar. Well, I think Lamar has given Ravens fans. So plenty of reasons to love him, the success that they've been able to have. I mean, all they, they haven't done is go out there and get to a conference championship that takes them to the Superbowl. Besides that individual successful Lamar Jackson, there's been a plenty.

Pro bowls, all pros. And we all know about that MVP season in 2019. Unfortunately for Lamar Jackson, they didn't even get to the playoffs last year as he went down with a bone bruise in his ankle and the Ravens were cooked and the Ravens now move into this season, coming off of all of the injuries to their running backs. The Ravens completed last season with everyone in their mother, pretty much being hurt before the season started and also injuries to their corners and defensive backs. Ravens should be good this year, but everything is obviously going to hinge around Lamar Jackson. And is this squad as strong as the one as he had in 2019?

Probably not. But at the same time, Lamar Jackson should have up until this point, have improved as a player. Who's going to step up? Is going to live up to the is going to live up to his his hype from when he was drafted, which was to go out there and ultimately turn into a number one receiver. You know, how will the running backs perform? Mike Davis is someone who's on the team.

They just added Kenyon Drake. But we know who the primary runner is. His name is Lamar Jackson. How does the passing game develop?

Who steps up? Am I going to look at Lamar dumping the ball off to Mark Andrews at every opportunity because he's the escape hatch? And so those are all legitimate football reasons. But then people within their right, they have reason to question whether or not Lamar Jackson is durable enough to get a fully guaranteed contract, whether or not Lamar will last long enough, whether he's deserving to get all of this cash and all of this money.

When Deshaun Watson, we know this man is just dealing with a suspension right now. And in the midst of it, he got $230 million guaranteed. Every dollar, every cent in his contract was guaranteed. You want to know who got the same deal?

Pretty much Kyler Murray. He only got 160 guaranteed. And so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to say Lamar Jackson, he wants more money guaranteed than Kyler Murray. He wants all the money guaranteed.

And is that a good deal for the Ravens? Or are they going to go into this season on an expiring contract and having to tag him for the next year? You don't want to tag him next year and then tag him the year after that.

It becomes cost prohibitive. I just feel strongly. I don't know who it's going to be. The longer that this situation just goes with Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, somebody's going to get burned. Somebody's going to get burned.

Somebody's going to get burned. Whether it's the Ravens because they gave him a fully guaranteed deal that who knows, he might not be able to stay healthy throughout the duration of it. And I say that also saying that most people overblow, you know, oh, he's injury prone.

This man blows by folks and gets the hell out the way. Is he more susceptible to injury because he's in the open field? Yeah, but he ain't out there diving into folks like he's Cam Newton or Josh Allen.

So that's the first thing. But then on the other hand, Lamar's putting himself in danger as well. They got to come to a conclusion.

It'd be nice if they were able to do it before the season starts, but that doesn't appear likely right now. Coach Harbaugh, he talked about it about a month ago. He felt at the time very confident that they could get something together. Take a listen. My feeling, I guess I would just say, I think that my feeling in what I hear from both, you know, I get a chance, I get to talk to both sides. And both sides are very motivated to get the job done. And so I feel like that's kind of where it's at.

But, you know, Lamar's practicing all day. So it's not like they're going to be in some kind of negotiation all day, like they might be in a regular situation. So, you know, that's part of the deal with that. Yeah, I wish they just get this over with.

What are they going to do? Wait until next year? Yes.

I mean, damn, Shep. Do you know how much this cost? If they hand him over money, if they come to an agreement, you're not going to have to pay Lamar Jackson. Forget, well, let's give him, you know, 45 and let's give him 50. No.

Joe Burrow and Herbert, these guys are going to be making like 55. It's nuts, man. Lamar Jackson might have Aaron Judge on speed dial right now, JR. You think he's coming out with another MVP, huh? Yeah.

The amount of disrespect this guy has gotten over the last three seasons. Yes. I agree with you. I agree. But, you know, it's a little bit different in the contact sport. There's nothing that says Lamar Jackson isn't going to suffer another ankle injury.

And this is just the nature of the game. Is Lamar going to play every game? Maybe.

Possibly. Is he going to miss a game? Wouldn't shock anybody. Would anybody be surprised if he suffered any type of leg injury?

No, not at all. It's a flip of the coin. He's added weight to his frame, says he feels stronger.

It's just as fast. You would think or imagine for someone who started his first game in 2018, here in 2022, he would be an improved passer. That's something that also exists. And so with the NFL, you never know.

I just know this for a fact. The longer that they take to come to an agreement on his contract, I just think it's worse for both sides. Unless, as Shep just said, Lamar comes out and has another MVP caliber season. And that's tough to do. He has the talent to do it.

It's wild as hell. I'm going to open up the phone lines. That's 855-212-4CBS.

That's 855-212-4CBS. Shep just mentioned Aaron Judge. He bet on himself, said no to the deal the Yankees offered. Aaron Judge is on his way to an MVP.

He's breaking records and he is going to break the bank. Whether the Yankees give him the cash or someone else. Lamar Jackson entering into the final year of his deal. The Ravens have options. They can tag him or they can offer him a long-term deal.

The longer that they wait, potentially the worse it can be for them with how much they have to pay. If you're Lamar Jackson, do you take the deal right now? Do you feel it's too risky to go into this season without having that security, regardless of how much guaranteed money is there? Is Lamar Jackson playing with fire? I'm going to take your phone calls on the other side. It's the JR Sport Reshow on CBS Sports Radio. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief on CBS Sports Radio. Hey JR, I appreciate you taking my call. I just want to say that you got an awesome show, man.

I enjoy it very much when I'm out moving about at night. Call in now at 855-212-4CBS. It's the JR Sport Reshow here with you on CBS Sports Radio. At the top of the hour, as I do every Wednesday night into Thursday morning, I'm going to be taking my call.

I'm going to be taking my call. At the top of the hour, as I do every Wednesday night into Thursday morning, I'm going to bring you a new top six list and on the heels of the NFL's top 100 voted on by the players, I'm just going to give you the top six list. The best NFL players heading into the 2022 season. This is not going to be a popularity contest.

I'm not going to hand out flowers for what anybody did five years ago or 20 years ago. I'm just going to tell you who I think the best players are heading into the season based on recent accomplishments and what they can accomplish going into this upcoming season. And so that top six list is coming at the top of the hour. We're talking about an individual who very well might land on the list.

Where is the question? And his name is Lamar Jackson. I told you pretty much that there's fire being played with right now. Whether it's Lamar Jackson or the Ravens, they still haven't come to an agreement on his contract. Once the season starts, Lamar Jackson will obviously want to focus in daily on playing because he has no agent. At the same time, the Ravens are going to want to come to a deal because the market for quarterbacks, the salaries continue to go through the roof.

You're either at Deshaun Watson territory at $46 million per year or you're at Aaron Rodgers territory making $50 million per year and you can bet your ass by the time we get to next offseason, Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert will be making excess of $50 million a year. And what is Lamar Jackson gonna do? Say, oh, y'all just gonna have to pay more or it could be dangerous for him. He wants all the guaranteed money. Is he playing with fire? Yes, yes he is.

And we just have no idea whether or not he'll be burned. The phone lines are open 855-212-4CBS. That's 855-212-4CBS. Terry, call him from Kentucky. You're on the JR Sport Reef show. Thank you, JR. Long time listener. Actually started listening to you during COVID. So you helped me get through a lot of nights of that. But I'm in Louisville and that's, of course, where Lamar went to college.

Yeah. So I think we got to remember the competitive spirit of these guys too. He sat back and watched Deshaun Watson get paid basically for sitting on the couch and being allegedly inappropriate during that time. And he's gone out and busted his ass on the field. And Deshaun Watson practically got a contract overnight. He never heard about it.

There wasn't a workup on it. There wasn't a lot of controversy that surrounded it outside of the extenuating controversy that was going on. Kyler Murray, he alluded to some tweets and maybe said something to some people to kind of show his disgruntledness.

But even that was just a blurb in the radar. But this Lamar Jackson thing has gone on. I mean, I've heard about it since damn near the Super Bowl. We've been talking about Lamar Jackson getting paid.

So why so much controversy? Why so much of a microscope on him as opposed to these other guys who made a lot more noise to get their money? Lamar's been pretty quiet. He's been pretty mature. Keep in mind, when Lamar started as a freshman, he was 17 years old when he came here to Louisville. He was the youngest, he was 21 years old, youngest Heisman winner on record.

Yeah. Well, we know he's been disrespected for a long time. I mean, just even playing the position.

And can he last at quarterback? Even after winning the MVP, people still look and say, well, he has a ceiling. And I think it's realistic to say it's not just based on him.

And this is something else, Terry, and I want to thank you for calling from Kentucky. You brought up some excellent points. There is so much focus in on Lamar Jackson because of his ability on his ability on the football field, what he has done. There's more emphasis on what people feel that he can't do because he's unique.

And a lot of times it really gets lost. Like, what about the rest of the team? Everything is so built and constructed around him.

What about the rest of the team? He's polarizing to that degree. He's one of the most exciting players to have ever played the game. He's had success. He's had early success in his career, and he's had so much of it in a different way that people just go, well, damn, can it last?

Will it last? Drew is calling from South Carolina. You're on the JR Sport Reshow here on CBS. What's up, Drew? Hey, JR. What's going on, man? Great show.

Keep up the good work. Shep doing a good job with the intro music tonight. A couple of things. Rawdus Chapman, we're talking about him getting a tattoo. I just don't know why we think he makes good decisions after he was already in court trouble right around the time he got traded from Cincinnati. Also, Lamar, no trouble off the field. You got all these guys. Caller previous brought up Deshaun. We got Mr. You Like That. No guaranteed money. Lamar puts his head down.

He works. He's gotten better every year. And I thought Baltimore was one of the top tier franchises, had their stuff together. I don't know why they haven't gotten this deal done yet. Well, it takes two to tango, Drew. Are they just going to say, well, here's 230 million like Deshaun?

I think that would maybe solve everything. It's the art of the negotiation. They don't have to give him a fully guaranteed deal. Right. But will we say he's a top half of the league quarterback?

Because if so, why is he not getting guaranteed money like other guys that are maybe in the bottom of that top half? You know, absolutely. Well, at the same time, a new precedent was set.

And it was and that's a different conversation. Giving Deshaun Watson nobody's running around with this a fully guaranteed contract all the way through you. A lot of these NFL contracts historically have been a lot of smoke and mirrors. This is what the contract is. This is when we can cut you. This is how much money you get up front as a signing bonus.

And everybody goes about their merry way, knowing that I got my money up front and that if you cut me, that I got paid. In the case of Deshaun Watson, that doesn't exist in the same space. Kyler Murray is operating on a $230 million deal. He might not see every single penny and cent of it, but they did guarantee him $160 million.

And so this is a this is something that's that's new. And so, look, you can you can trust that Steve Biscotti is not happy and he's pretty much said it. He, knowing that he has to pay Lamar, was not happy with the fact that, oh, my God, he just gave Deshaun Watson a guaranteed deal. All of his money. Because, you know, Lamar Jackson is going, hey, he got that.

How about me? It's no different than than coaches. Just last week, Nick Saban, year after year after year, we know what he does, goes and competes for national championships. Kirby Smart finally wins a national championship. He gets $11.2 million a year. Kirby Smart, before the season even gets started, is now the highest paid coach in college football.

Well, what happens next? Nick Saban knocks on the door and says, hey, I need a half million dollars more per year than what you're giving Kirby Smart. Kirby's getting 11.2. Hey, pay me 11.7.

And here we are. It's what are you getting? How much am I getting? I am better. I'm more accomplished than that guy. Pay me now. Bob is calling from Toronto.

You're on CBS Sports Radio. Mr. JR. JR, if I can, I'd like to help Lamar. Now, you said he didn't have an agent. Year two in his contract is MVP.

I didn't hear of him getting a big bonus or a bump. But at year five, Lamar, if you get hurt this year, they'll leave you on the field. You won't get no money. So here's what you do, son. You go home. Send your mama down and say, Baltimore, you don't sign me. Either sign me or trade me. Because I'm playing with or without a contract.

No contract. I'm not playing. Thanks very much. Can't comment anymore. Well, thank you, Bob.

All right. There it is. You go from there, son. Can I help somebody before they go off the deep end? Well, damn, Bob.

Bob has all the advice for everybody. I don't know. We trade in Lamar Jackson now. That's a novel idea.

I like it. It's not realistic. It ain't happening right now. What's Lamar going to, he's going to get traded to where? I don't know.

What? Houston? We going to send him to the Lions? We send him to Miami for two and a week out from the NFL season. He's not getting traded. This is not the NBA, a little bit different.

It is the JR sport ratio on CBS sports radio. And it is almost time for a new top six list because we're going to take a break. And when we come back, I'm going to give you a top six list. The best NFL players heading into the 2022 season.

Don't move. It's going to be better than the NFL's 100. It's the JR sport ratio, CBS sports radio.
