God has an encouraging word for you and me today to the Bible-based preaching of Dr. Don Wilton on this edition of The Encouraging Word. We are continuing our study in the book of acts acts chapter 23. As a matter fact is will Dr. O'Donnell take us in just a moment, talking about Paul actually talking about preaching Paul's funeral. You know, we morbid, think, think about our funerals is the truth is, all of us someday will be remembered and what will be remembered for Paul, of course, remembered for writing most of the New Testament for the way he influence so many churches, he wrote to the church at Ephesus.
All these things come together in today's message from Dr. Wilton hope you'll join us back. Fact text someone invite a friend tuning as well. We love to connect with you. Of course online as well GVW online.org now.
Today's message with Dr. Don Wilton acts chapter 23 and verse 11. I'm only going to read one verse to you and then little begin to roll together in just a moment, but I want you to see acts chapter 23 in verse 11. This one verse in the life of pull just has jumped out at me and I just cannot begin to tell you how much God has shown me, just through this one verse. I like to read it to you. Acts chapter 23 in verse 11. The following not the Lord Jesus stood by him and see, pull, take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify about me enrollment. It's an amazing verse because I have this picture in my own human understanding. I mean God once again came and the word sees stood by him God appeared to this one person to pull and spoke to him and said to him, take courage, while in that fantastic, take courage and as you have testified to. And yes, the wood and the facts about me the truth about Jesus right here in Jerusalem where Paul was when Jesus said this to him.
So it is that the Lord Jesus EDM as it is that I you testified you told the truth, you stuck to the truth. Your life has been shining brightly so it is I want you now to to go to road so I want you to take a final look at a map with me and I'm I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this, because I'm going to show you the quandary that I've been so this is where Paul is down here in Jerusalem and this is where God said this to him and he takes these final trip and he leaves. Then he goes to this place called Caesarea by the sea. And when Paul arrived day he appeared before three pretty famous people. Felix fasters and then King Agrippa spent two years they bought away quite a long time Amini was actually imprisoned. He was bound and the time came after he had witnessed to these people that he went up out of the port of Sidon jumped on a boat and you can see it's quite a long trip all the way to this place called Myra some of us will remember Ronnie's third trip he went from Potala all the way coming to Jerusalem memo. There were 276 people on the leadership he jumped on the bigger Shipley was on one of those ships. He went around the side of Cypress in the Bible even sees why he did that they had to hug the coastline back in those days they had to stay as close to the coast as they possibly could. Every now and again they got in the middle of the deep dark blue sea. A lot of the ships just disappeared from Myra yet. They sailed between roads and the mainland came down this side of the island of Crete, which is quite an interesting island being, they quite a number times myself and they came down hugging the coast of of Crete and eventually they took this journey all the way to motor a lot of wonderful brave men and women who are involved in World War II will tell you a lot about the island of Malta even to this day, but it was so arduous and the winds were so bad that the ship wreck and Paul actually prophesied God told him that was going to happen but Godspeed all of them. Finally they got themselves together and they landed here in Syracuse New York a big apartment in Sicily Sicily is a magnificent island but they landed yeah and he spent several days there eventually getting on board a ship and he came Roger to the tip of the boot of Italy called Pergamum write that radium sorry not Pergamum Reagan and landed day finally taking this path through the entire Iranian sea landed here in this part of Rome just the other side of Pompeii and other side of this party is called the MLC coast. How many of you been to the Amalfi coast of Italy very spectacular place. The island of Capri Pre-strike.
There off the coast of Amalfi arrived, so today we've got big cities here in Italy. He landed right the other side of Pompeii volcanoes and all those things eventually ended up your inroad when he got to Rome he was under house arrest for two years and during that time, we gonna talk about it in a minute. Finally got to the end of these house arrest. He was kept in a prisonlike house arrest, and during that whole time he never changed one bit and actually it was while in Rome that he wrote many of the books of the Bible that we know one of those was second Timothy alright so let me read to what he wrote some people say just before he died.
Paul wrote this in about 67 A.D., about 67 A.D. which was the time of the Emperor Nero and the Emperor Nero there was massive persecution member. The Jerusalem fell in A.D. 70, the Emperor Nero was a persecuted. He hated Christians.
And Paul wrote these words in second Timothy chapter 4 verse six just before he died he said I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me but to all who have loved his appearing and that amazing.
He wrote that just some say just days before he died.
By the way, how did pull die.
He was beheaded. Why was pull beheaded because he was a Roman citizen.
Roman citizens were not allowed to be crucified. That was reserved for the dregs of society like Jesus of Nazareth.
It was ultimate shame to be crucified. Pull was beheaded with the sword. Shortly after he wrote these words so people God is speaking to us. The Lord is speaking to me.
What's the bottom line we we made a commitment on Thursday night that we were not going to get ahead of God. Any questions we took the time out of everything we said. If it takes us hundred days to sail from here to Rome will take 100 days, but we going to do what God tells us to do and the bottom line is we want our light shine. All that matters is the mission so I suddenly realized that God was saying to me we need to be studying why our light shines and what is our light, and Lord I got a hold journey here how my going to get all the sin I need another 15 weeks to get pulled to Rome, do not. God said to me preach Paul's funeral so I'm going to welcome you today to a funeral service. One of the great privileges that I have is a pasta probably one the greatest privileges I have is families and friends and loved ones come to me and to those of us who serve the Lord in and ask us, invite us to preach precious loved ones funeral services.
We always have a problem I always do because I always ask myself if you have a funeral service you talking about someone's life. How do you talk about someone's life in 20 minutes. One what they going to say about you in 20 minutes. Given your life.
Jesus boiled it down to one thing, a light that shines. That's what we going to talk about but Lord, I'm about to pull.
I go to get in the Rome well I'm going to invite you to join with countless thousands of others over the generations. Why don't you just preaches funeral message so this is what God put in my heart.
I welcome all of us today to celebrate the life of a man by the name of pull and most divisive have made human come to know him and there's so much that we would wish that we could talk about him, but I've only got 20 minutes and this is what God is put in my heart concerning the light that shone from this man's life that is never gone out.
You know just said I was watching a clip of one of the football games and I wish I could remember which one, because I was jumping around my wife just loves me for an somebody they spoke about somebody in football that had died some years ago and this was the comment they said I will never forget that coach. He's like will always shine in my life. I know that he's been dead for 25 years but everything that he didn't live for, and the way he coached in his demeanor and his relationship in the way he loved on young people. He said those things continue to live in me. Thank you for being here today as we try to celebrate the life of pull. I believe that as we celebrate the life of this.
One person there were a number of things that most of us can say number one.
He had an incredible personal testimony. I'd I just love it.
I just want us to be reminded now that he's gone, he's testimony lives on and we read about it. It seems to me at so many of the stops and places that he was in different stages of use live that this man once was a blasphemer. I mean, he had no time for the house of God for the people of God for the things of God and and and how many times did he talk about being on the road to Damascus and email Jesus and his life trying to train your listing to Dr. Don Wilton our teacher here on The Encouraging Word and he'll be back with more of this message. Now back to Dr. Don's message preaching Paul's funeral here on The Encouraging Word. I think all of us will agree that he's life was trained and everybody. I'm not sure that there were many who ever walked up to: he and and he had to tell him something about a strange life and I say I don't know if I understand hold that there were many times that he found himself whether it be in this place of that is that that people out they would've had any doubt that he was a trying person what a light seems to me that on this journey of life.
What one thing we can celebrate is this man's personal testimony what he was, how he made Jesus and who he became. He never got over the fact that he made Jesus and his personal testimony governed everything that he did. It was the very measure it governed what he built it governed way he went. It governed how he served it governed what he gave. He was just a changed man. He not only had an incredible testimony, but as we celebrate his life. I think you will agree that he obeyed an amazing call.
You know when when he got to a place called Truax as an and and he wanted to go in this direction. In the spirit of God appeared to him and the man from Macedonia and said not another.
Come on over here. I know that it was about the place Greece or Boston. The or whether it was about Eastern blue all trying all Africa all Spartanburg South Carolina is just about the fact that this amazing call had to do with an amazing God who made an amazing decision to use one amazing man whose life had been changed and this is where God wanted him to be. It was amazing you known as we celebrate his life. I am feeling and hearing that amazing coal come down upon a lot of my friends that I look at today.
God is talking to you in the same way and saying come on over here but I think you been I would also agree that that he loved the Lord with total devotion. There's 1/3. Perhaps the hallmark of this man that made this final journey that ended in his untimely death. He he just love the Lord Jesus with total devotion. You can feel it.
You could curate it's it's lack. It didn't matter whether he was sitting down at a meal, going to a bowl game playing a game of golf, or whether he was riding on a boat to whether he was with these basic Frenzel Eddy's family. He was just he just love Jesus with the total devotion it just permeated it was pull out are not you know that I think that everywhere you win, people would've said you know one thing about that guy. I can't stand him because he's a Christian because he just loves Jesus so much.
Wow, I just feel so encouraged to be around this person seems like they total devotion just this total love. But having understood that in and seeing that in celebrating that in these life I think we would all agree that he not only love the Lord with total devotion. But he loved others through thick and thin. He wasn't a fair weather man who loved and served others. Depending on the circumstances.
Hard thing. I'd I do how he did it actually would you not identified.
I'm not sure because some people would join the unkind to him.
You know I mean, they started rumors about him. They wanted to put him in jail. They wrapped them up in irons like you hold him. They chased him out of one town after another. They booed him they he steamed they got rioters to come by shifting people like blasting people from the neighborhood to come and to attain the damage. I mean, they just did everything you could possibly imagine, but he just continued to love them like Jesus would love them. His was an angry world and the irony is, there were just so many people out there looking for this kind of love. It speaks an incredible testimony. This guy, he obeyed such an amazing hole. He love the Lord with total devotion. He loved others through thick and thin, and he trusted God in every circumstance, not just blows me away. It's it's like when he wrote his letter to the church at Philippi. Remember any wrote that from Rome as well. Just before we I mean it's like I can do all things. It's like my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. It's like he was writing what he believed.
All you will need an and it would seem to me that in this extraordinary life that this most amazing person just it's almost like a little juvenile Raley.
I mean it's kinda like simplistic. It's like falling off a log some more time mean he just trusted God. He just had such a beautiful faith said, Lord, you got it.
I I'd I trust you Lord, because I know how much you love me. I know you made me.
I know Jesus died for me. I have a personal relationship with you but I thought I just gotta get on to this before we close out this funeral service celebrating Paul's life because I think we've got to say to you that he raised up others with today in mind that was the light unit everywhere you go and travel with pole. It seems to me that he looked into the faces of other men and women and he pulled himself into them so that when he was gone. The work would continue. Just the same, and even strong. Wow, I just think of Timothy I mean he went out of his way. It's like it if if no keeping it's like many times I look at him and I say it's almost like I wasn't doing it for himself. He was doing it so that those babies you weren't born yet would be able to know the joy of this Jesus that he made and those children and those young people and all those young professionals making all those paints with all the new modern equipment it.
It's like he understood that one day they would be computers and he didn't even know what it was. He just had this passion for this world that turns until Jesus comes.
He raised up others with today in mind, but one final thing you know is as as we as I have join with you for 18 weeks and and and we've tried to follow his journey. I think I've already believe all of us who have read and watched and listened and followed II think alike I am in a stick. Monica I think all of us will agree one thing pole dude was that he held hi the name of Jesus in every way for me to live is Christ and to die is gain. He was like this Jesus person like he really believe that it's at the name of Jesus, that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess because he is Lord.
It's like pull really believe that Jesus loved him and that he loves every person. Christ died for all, that all might know him come to seek and to save the lost pole just every time he turned the corner he wanted to sing. Jesus saves because he heard heaven beating he heard heaven beating and the beep which came from the throne of God was beating out one phrase Jesus saves.
He knew he could see the heavens opening and the Son of Man coming down out of heaven from the very throne of God and landing on the Mount of olives, he sold it.
He knew it. He believed, and with him all the armies of heaven he could see Jesus walking down through the Kidron Valley and cross that golden bridge and through that golden arch way back onto the Temple Mount, reclaiming his rightful throne that today is under the rulership of the usurper. He he believed must be encouraged, the user might occupy what he considers to be the throne. But the king is coming. He believed that he believed that everything about pole was about Jesus you know this man wouldn't let himself get sidetracked into brands of theology.
Did you notice that you can get pulled by the Spurs while I pull bothers this way and that way he didn't get bogged down in in all the opinions in the religious attitudes in the national impending thought patents he just said listen, could, could I just tell you again about Jesus. It seems to me that he was the centerpiece on the mantelpiece and everything he held hi the name of Jesus in every way he held them by my he called them Jesus didn't talk in abstract terms about this fella up there and I know there's a great to be he did not. I never I didn't hear Paul once get up inside. Yeah, you know there has to be a higher opinion updating the man in the sky. He would never blaspheme like that… He he met in person.
He knew that he was on holy ground. He spoke of Jesus by night is Jesus. How precious is the name of Jesus. Jesus through his word.
He had the highest attitude possible concerning the word of God. He believed that from Genesis to Revelation. This scene infallible word is about Jesus. I think he'd never met Charles Haddon Spurgeon, but I think he was already agreeing with them when Spurgeon said every time I make up the cross because it's about Jesus's Jesus really is the request for the next few seconds… Take this the final move here.
Perhaps the most important part of today's broadcast God has spoken has you ready to give your heart to Jesus.
I'd love to help you write would you pray this prayer with me and accept Jesus into your heart and life. Dear God, I know that I miss. I know that Jesus loves me and died for me on the cross. Right now I repent of my sins and I confessed my sin to the Lord Jesus Christ coming to say today give me for my sin. Jesus name I pray they made.
