I love you know, I mean, I'm trying to remember. I mean, it's been what you spend years. The first time that I saw one of your things, right? I'm looking at this and I'm going, no, wait a minute. Why? Oh, wait a minute. This is satire. I love it.
These guys are great. What was it? Let's start at that beginning. So tell me, you know, what? You're looking at what's going on, obviously, right?
And you're saying what? Yeah, so I mean, people are usually surprised when we tell them that the Babylon V started in 2016, which wasn't that long ago, it seems like the Babylon V has been around a lot longer than that. But we started kind of during the election season of 2016. And, and we kind of started, you know, our founder, Adam Ford, got this idea, reading The Onion, which is a, a, a another satire, kind of a fake news, AP style, fake news, satire site.
And this is after the Obergefell decision when they redefined the means of marriage in the Supreme Court. And the onion put out a headline, something to the effect of four conservative Supreme Court justices suddenly realized that they will someday be the villains in an upcoming Oscar winning movie. You know, you know, you don't agree with their worldview, but you kind of respect the joke a little bit, you know, so Adam got this idea, you know, why aren't we doing this? Why?
Why isn't our side doing? Why are Christians making these kinds of jokes? And, and so he started the Babylon V is kind of a side project, not not really thinking it was gonna go anywhere. But within a few weeks, it just it just went mega viral, and people really responded to it, you know, especially kind of the the inside church humor, you know, with a poking fun at a lot of the the quirkiness of Christian culture. And, and that's, that's how I found the be I started as a fan myself.
And I only came on about two and a half years ago. And, and it's, it's just been the best job ever. It's looking, looking at the news every day, kind of the sadness and despair and brokenness we see around this all the time, right? And then kind of thinking, you know, what's what, what, what can I find that's funny about it? And it really does kind of change your perspective and, and make make life a little bit more joyful, which we hope it does for our readers as well.
Well, and it's interesting, too, because I, you know, you guys come from a Christian worldview, as well, which I think is is really cool. I just as you were talking about that, I feel like I get it dropped in my head, the Good Samaritan parable, right? I mean, think about how much that must have really ticked off the established, you know, the that that counter establishment, right, that Jesus was kind of trying to wake up when he when he uses a Samaritan, and he says, Hey, let's talk about a good Samaritan.
Everybody would have gotten nuts. Yeah, that's so true. I think a lot of it is lost in translation over over 2000 years, a lot of the things that Jesus said, where there was a lot of irony and hyperbole and really satire. And what he said, you know, one of one of the classics is when he said that it's, it's easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. And that's about one big joke. You know, that's classic hyperbole.
And, you know, it goes all the way back to the biblical prophets, who mocked idolatry, and, and the worshippers of Dale, and, and so we kind of see ourselves as continuing that tradition a little bit. Well, you know, I mean, I've got I've raised five kids, and I always I tried, I tried. Yeah, right. So you know, yeah, if you better, you better have a sense of humor. If you're just five kids, you better try to have a little sense of humor. But I would always try to use, you know, something satirical and what I would say they would do something and I would be like, okay, so, you know, you know, don't, you know, don't cut the head off the cat, you know, or whatever. I mean, just kind of, you know what I mean? Just like, you know, yeah. And, you know, something kind of exaggerated a little bit and and then they'd be like, Oh, come on, dad.
And I'd be like, No, look, I'm trying to get a point across here. I'm trying to use humor first. We're going to try humor first, and then we're going to bring out the belt. So you know, you can choose you can choose humor, you can choose the belt.
It's up to you. Yeah. So we at the Babylon be we our job is the humor.
I guess we we've developed the guy. There you go. Now I'm with you. I'm with you.
I'm with you. You know, I read this in in in the in the open last half hour and and so there was a gathering that took place at Yale. And and I got this email this morning. She was shouted down had insults and obscenities hurled at her. There was physical intimidation in the classroom. Yet Kristen Wagner stood strong in the face of a student mob at Yale Law School, the top ranked law school. In America. She was a member of a prestigious panel of speakers invited to discuss how attorneys with different views can come together and support free speech.
There were future lawyers, judges, legislators, corporate executives, all filled the room. But instead, they chose to bang on the walls, call Kristen and others names. Instead of listening to a different point of view, it got so bad that they had to escort her to the with police protection. This is what we're talking about, right?
I mean, this is, you know, this is kind of where, where we've digressed to you guys recently experienced I know about cancel culture. I'm, I'm banned for life on Twitter for saying that Eric Swalwell was a Chinese spy whore. I'm not sure. It's how he's right. He was running a prostitution ring in the House Intelligence Committee.
I don't understand why that's not a Chinese spy whore. But anyway, then I was banned on on LinkedIn for praying for people that have taken the jab and are experiencing, you know, ill effects so that so that was well, can't can't do that. I was banned on Vimeo for suggesting that there might be an election problem.
And I don't know, there's something about 2000 mules. But yeah, you know, that there's, you know, kind of an issue there. And then, and then I was banned on YouTube for bringing Dr. Judy Mike, if it's on the program. Yeah, yeah, we've gotten to this point where where the left has has really become what they've always accused us of being, you know, very illiberal, bigoted, regressive, closed minded. And, you know, in in in times like this, and this kind of post truth culture we live in, humor is kind of the last thing, you know, it's kind of the usually the safest place where you can skirt the line and say things that aren't usually acceptable to stay in, in polite, respectable company and, and when they start coming after the comedians, you know, you're in trouble. So yeah, yeah.
Well, yeah, Ricky Gervais, watch out, right? You're done. You were done with you, right? But he knew that.
That's why he got his last little jabs in. Well, you know, it's, there's a reason why the Babylon beat us to live stage show. I don't know if we survived. It is conservative satire, but they are they really do they come from a Christian worldview. And, and I and I just absolutely just absolutely love it. Matter of fact, we weren't going to do this. I'm so sorry. Okay, so, but you know, interesting conversation, right? So you guys did an interview with Elon Musk? Yes, we did.
Right. And that was like, yeah, that like it blew up. But one of the things that you kind of, you know, pose to him was was the Christian question.
Talk a little bit about that and and how that influences what you do. Yeah, so we in that interview, what a lot of people didn't get who aren't familiar with what we do on the Babylon podcast, you know, we, we always pose this kind of a, we pose the question satirically, it kind of making fun of trite gospel invitations are kind of devoid of substance. So we'll, we'll ask people if they want to do us a favor and just ask Jesus into their heart real quick. And, and so we asked that, that question of Elon and you know, he gave he gave actually gave a very thoughtful answer.
No thought about this. And obviously, he doesn't believe in God. But, you know, we still have a relationship with him. And we're, we're praying for him. We hope yes, other people are praying for him.
Yes, for his salvation. But yes, you know, as far as what we do every day, you know, it has to inform everything we do, because, you know, Jesus is the source of truth. And, you know, if we if we drift away from him, we're going to drift away from from that that foundation that we have to write good satire to be able to critique the world through an accurate lens. And, you know, he, through the fruits of the Spirit, he gives us the joy and the peace that we need to avoid writing cynical or mean spirited satire.
You know, we might skirt that line on occasion, but it's very important to remain true to the core of who we are with all of us. Well, it's, it's, you know, your guys's writing is, it's Proverbs, right? It's, it's Ecclesiastes. It's a lot of Ecclesiastes.
You know, it's, it's, you know, I mean, that was, that was solid. That was what Solomon was doing in Ecclesiastes. He was, he was, you know, going, but it's also a lot of theologically, it's a lot of Paul, right?
And Romans, because Paul would go, you know, way out over here on grace, and then he'd go way out over here on legalism and the law, and then, and, but then he'd always come back to the center, come back to the center, find, you know, get into balance with the message and the true power of an encounter. Because we can't do this. We can't, we can't destroy the old nature. And we're born with it. We can't destroy it.
It is crucified with Christ. And the problem I see is, is we're running around, we're like Peter Pan with his shadow going into Wendy's upper room, right? And saying, hey, can you sew this thing back on? And God is saying, no, with hands you can't see, I severed that. I'm the one who cut that off of you.
I'm the one who cut off that shadow quit trying to drag it back into your life. You're free from it. It's true. Yep. Yep. And we have we have to we have to continue to behave as free people.
No doubt. Well, and so you guys have written a new book that that is, you know, talking about what one of the most famous journeys, right in in in Christian. You know, and and I'm talking about pilgrims progress. But you guys have written the postmodern pilgrims progress.
Talk to me about that. Yeah, I'm actually really excited about this. Kyle and I wrote it together. This is the first novel that we've written, obviously, kind of it's a reimagining. It's not it's not a translation or an update, but a complete reimagining of of John Bunyan's classic, the pilgrims progress, which arguably is the you know, the first English novel and one of the greatest works of English literature. And and it's, you know, our version has it has multiverses. It has aliens, laser pinchers. It has a lot of really funny satire. OK, so, you know, it's kind of a it's a bit of a cross between, you know, Hittiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Pilgrim's Progress.
And what we wanted to do with this book is kind of address a little bit where we are right now in this this postmodernist humanist moral relativist culture, you know, an American church that is maybe a little bit lost. And it's kind of a little bit a little bit. Come on.
Come on. You know, that was satirical right there. Maybe a little bit lost. That was pretty satirical.
It's like the sign spun it and pointed it down. Hello. I'm sorry. Yeah.
Yeah. What we're excited about is this main character. His name is Ryan. And there's a dream where he becomes Christian and and his backstories.
He's kind of been pushed away from the truth through the failings of the church. And through this dream, he encounters his creator and and goes on this wild, crazy adventure with, you know, meeting all these creatures and, you know, fighting dragons. It's really fun, man. Oh, man. All right.
