Not this is family policy with NC family Pres. John Weston thanks for joining us for family culture matters. This week we will be repairing a wonderful interview from December 2016 with Dr. Jennifer Murph, president of millennial's for marriage. We hope you enjoy. Thanks for joining us this week for family policy matters.

Our guest today is Dr. Jennifer Murph, president of millennial's for marriage. We will be talking with Jennifer about her organizations work to shift culture change perceptions and reintroduce the beauty of dating and marriage particularly to millennial's in our culture in a relevant and authentic way.

Jennifer has been a college minister conference speaker and is presently a university professor and facilitator in leadership development, and she has conducted years of research looking at the emerging leaders of today and the families they will produce tomorrow Jennifer walking the family policy matters.

It's great to have you on the show.

Thank you so much for having me on today while were delighted to have you on Jennifer now you have managed. Interestingly, to combine two big current hot topics into a single organization.

Marriage and millennial's introduce our listeners.

If you would to marriage for millennial's organization ensure your vision and mission with our listeners are both millennial hair stand at the rate or at the hand in marriage altogether and not getting my doctor wonder how they can affect our church family. I began my research and write actually pretty astonishing research millennial for marriage with Barry we wanted to see the perception of marriage change among my generation family values would be revived within our nation by shifting culture and reintroducing dating and marriage in a relevant way.

While what a great vision.

We talk about the solution. I think it's important for us to discuss the need that you see in society today. You mentioned the current perception of marriage among millennial. But what is that perception, and what are we seeing with respect to the approach of millennial's to relationships to marriage and family life that is different from generations that preceded them well. The starting point for young people that I got married and started a career.

Children like to get a little different when you do not want to get married or have a family there, just not in a hurry to do it going about it Barry I'm traditionally here, probably at what I mean never abandoning marriage together a delay. I would like to talk about why they're doing and fell in reason the first me then by the domain and avoiding married here about experience that 30% of millennial's today come from divorced homes really cute the way millennial view and approach marriage really cautious as their moving towards the altar. If there even approaching it all so want their marriage to end in divorce caused them to wait much, much older until they get married, which is not a bad thing, but we'll talk about that later. I know they are avoiding or delaying marriage is because the incredible high amount of debt that they have incurred throughout their education.

So millennial. Do not fill financially stable.

In fact, there is not another generation in modern era higher level loan debt, poverty, unemployment and lower levels of wealth and personal income in the millennial generation, on average $26,000 of debt are coming from the undergraduate degree alone and in fact, many students are getting graduate degrees to deal with the with the economy being so hard for baby boomers. They didn't beat the workforce today. State all that was supposed to know God is not there anymore so millennial's are going to get more education and incurring more debt and so very difficult as they are looking for spouse as they are trying to date there focusing on on their career are getting more education so rather than getting married they could cohabitate.

In fact, nearly 40% percent of millennial's believe that that the valid till death do us part should be completely abolished for wedding vows altogether. Marriage has become so irrelevant to the millennial generation that almost half support a marriage model would involve a two-year trial at which point the unique need to be formalized, dissolved, no paperwork, no divorce required on some of the words they would rather test the waters by cohabitate legally binding committed union of marriage. Recently, the National Center for family and marriage research at Bowling Green University released a report showing that the divorce rate actually wasn't a 40 year low in 2015, what you talked about this old already but what impact does divorce own millennial's views of marriage and also their views will perceptions of their likelihood of experiencing success in marriage. Earlier when I said that delaying marriage may not be too bad of a thing is that the reason why there's a 40 year low. Because they're waiting till they are a little bit older, getting married, there little bit but once you are getting married a little bit more financially stable time where you know if you had sex outside of marriage had to get married if you had a child out of wedlock.

You had to get married. The stigma in young people's mind that community didn't come around them walked to the issues of of maybe having a child are getting married and had a deal with it.

You get that yet the Dell at that getting divorce which broke the very book the family unit, not the mindset of millennial when they're not getting married if they have a child out of what they are not in a hurry to get married are getting married. A little later. They have more established careers, either financially stable.

They know themselves a little bit more than 18 years old right out of high school and found the love of their life now there no Which they don't get outside. It's just a mindset of marriage is a lot different listening to policy matters of resource to listen to our radio show online resources that will place of persuasion in your community. Go to our website and see family.org, millennial's seem to do better in relationships and marriages than their elders. Generations that came before them and do you see reason for hope for the development of a strong marriage culture among millennial's and future generations that follow them trying to figure it out but I'll something that we've learned a lot from the people who come before as buyer very nature we love mentor ship, the less feedback we want to be different.

We want to change our styled we are very introspective and are approach to life and so I was talking to a girl a few days ago. She is a single young woman and I said will what you doing right now I got married. No way I would like to be married.

I take this event and figure myself out so that I am, I know who I am and I know how I can be a good spouse to my future husband and so instead of feeling like you're somehow wrong for not being married. She was looking at the time for me to kind of retool some character issues that we've learned as a lot of communication that the roles of spouses have changed a little bit that's going to hotbed the traditional view of the woman United States home that has been worked look different to that learning to figure it out there working as a team there communicating on the kids that pigeonhole rules by previous generations so they really have a look at marriage as a team sport was great about is encouraging, though I know Jennifer millennial's for marriage is very clued into because of social media and social interactions. Your target demographics, millennial's engage as part of their everyday lives how important social media.

In this conversation and what role, if any. This technology and the increasing trend toward virtual relationships impact millennial's views on marriage and family well. Relationships success not just face-to-face, but fortunately unfortunately they exist virtually there so many different sites that young millennial can I connect and get on and maybe find a lot of their life. My best friend, L I am dating site. Be careful you discernment but because millennial's have waited so long to get married.

It's kind of difficult to find yours these days that you're not, you know, especially when on start a career you're not in your pool is a little looks a little different now you don't have the plethora of eligible men and a university setting our bill using technology to find your spouse it could be a great thing.

Marriage has been very successful in providing opportunities and venues for millennial's to to talk about marriage to be encouraged to pursue healthy relationships and consider marriage in a very positive light. Talk about if you would little bit Jennifer. Some of the most successful programs and events that have been conducted by millennial for marriage block called specs we have people like that all over the country and wear out and talk about story given by powerful and I have people write and after reading somebody's stories about how to help their marriage and how maybe change their perception of marriage. One of the articles. In particular, if the young millennial and he he has. He's divorced and he he said isn't flawed.

I am the name of the it's not the issue lately where people and we had issues and we all need work and felt that marriage as an institution. Yes you so I would love for you guys to read that article, if you're struggling with patent D that you know I marriage is still valuable thing we do with legally several we have hitched ethics seminar and will be go an extra couple at enrichment and then we also had a one night stand he that tonight will we encourage couple to go out and date can enrich their marriage and we we come to your location at your facility and we put on events. If you give the things you can like us on Facebook and empty ground where we have gone out and done street photography interviews and ask people give us your advice. Why is marriage valuable.

What you doing and where what is your perception of marriage and be willing out the videos that will hopefully go viral and that we can you know reintroduced marriage and change the perception among our generation. Jennifer, in your view, what are the most important things we can do as a society to reach younger generations with a positive and compelling message about marriage and really prepare the way for them to experience successful relationships and marriages so I always tell couples who are a little more seasoned than myself and remodeling were not expected you to be a Photoshop model but we are warning you to model how it's done.

Remember 30% of millennial's come from divorced homes see it done right. We need your advice, leisure, encouragement, and much about. We need your mentor ship. We need you to walk alongside young millennial couple and help us do the difficult times teaches how to communicate, just maybe walked into some financial thing.

Now how do we handle our finances. Millennial are still financially illiterate that it's hurting us in so many ways to walk alongside mentor and model the way of encouragement. Jennifer was nearly out of time for this week, but I won't give you the opportunity to let our listeners know where they can go to learn more about millennial's remarriage in your great work.

Well, you can go to millennial for marriage.or find our lot.
