You're listening to Clearview Today with Dr. Abadan Shah, the daily show that engages mind and heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm Ryan Hill. I'm John Galantis. Welcome to the Clearview Today Studio midweek.
It's your midweek pick-me-up right here at Clearview Church. Welcome. We are here in the studio with our host, Dr. Abadan Shah, who's a PhD in New Testament textual criticism, professor at Carolina University author, full-time pastor, and the host of today's show, Dr. Shah.
Welcome. It's good to be here. Good to be here. Also here with a special guest, owner of the Network of Truth. With a face like that, you would think he just took a bath at the Fountain of Youth.
I just hit my mic. I was so excited, ladies and gentlemen, it's Mr. Stu Efferson. Stu Efferson, welcome, welcome, welcome to the studio, sir. It's good to have you here.
Always a great day when you're in the studio with us. Did you write that little bit about the Fountain of Youth ahead of time? I was looking at his face. I said, man, it looks like Stu is just glowing today. But you don't really tell a grown man that they're glowing.
So I was like, I had to just pin a little something out. That was impressive. That was pretty good. While y'all were getting coffee, I was like, Network of Truth. I received that word of faith.
Fountain of truth. Or maybe a word of hope that it will get better as I age. Dr. Shaw, if anyone's listening today and they're thinking, who in the world is Stu Epperson Jr.? Tell us how you have to do that.
I would say, first and foremost, he's a great friend, but I would also say that he loves the Lord Jesus Christ and his word and wants to make it. Known to every person in the world. Amen. And that's what Truth Network is all about. And we're so blessed to be part of this.
And we cannot say that enough. We're very grateful for what you've done for us and putting us on the air. Thank you.
Well, praise the Lord. Thank you.
And this is a. A real brilliant picture of God's grace and his goodness that we would be maybe five, six, seven years ago. We wouldn't have not even known each other or not. Anywhere near each other. Of course, I know this studio wasn't here then, because God's done great things here in Henderson, North Carolina, in this church to have this facility.
As we've prayed through, we prayer walked a year ago, two years ago, three years ago, as God was putting the vision in your heart. And just to have, just to know that this is not only. Growing in the fruit of the Word of God here. But all over the airwaves, amen. Everyone listening, you're listening to God working, God blessing His Word.
That's right, which is so much bigger. That's right.
So, Isaiah 55, it does not return void. That's right.
Amen. So, it's an honor to be stewarding that, you know, at different levels, the assembly line. I caught one of your guys in this room, I'm not going to say his name, getting the mail. From the mailbox by the street, as I was pulling in today to the church. That's just so cool.
Yeah.
Someone's got to get the mail. That's right.
That's right.
Someone's got to deliver the mail so that the pastor can bring the mail on Sunday morning. Amen. I love that. Guys, I got a great game for you guys today. This is one of our favorites.
Stupid, I think this is your first time playing. These guys are pros, so I'm going to try to put a handicap on. Dr. Sean's a pro. This is going to ride his coattails.
This is called Proverb or Navarb. I'm going to lay out the rules for you.
So I've assembled a list of biblical proverbs, lesser-known proverbs. Here's the only bugaboo is that some of them are fake.
Some of them are AI-generated.
So some of them are in the Bible, some of them are fake. I want you guys to tell me which is which. Ryan, I'm going to start with you, my friend. Oh, boy. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Proverb or noverb? I'm gonna say proverb. Ryan. That's a proverb. That's a proverb 17, 28.
Great work. All right, Dr. Shah. Okay. The lion waits not for counsel when hunger stirs in his belly.
I would say nouverb. That is a not very correct. I haven't heard that one. Yeah, there's no lions having hunger stirring in his bed. There's some good AI.
Yeah, right. There is really good AI. I'm telling you, some of them are really tricky. We've been playing this for months, too, and it's funny because the more you play it, the better the AI gets. The AI actually learns with you.
Okay, Stu. The lot is cast into the lap. But it's every decision is from the Lord. Proverbs. Yes, Proverbs 16:33.
That was excellent. Excellent. All right, Ryan.
Okay. A candle loses nothing. by lighting another. That's a not verb. That's a not verb.
Yeah, that's not real. All right. All right. I mean, it was that moment. Yes.
There's a minute where you're like, okay, that sounds kind of good. doctor Shah likes snow in summer or rain in harvest. Honor is not fitting for a fool. It's a proverb. That's a proverb.
You guys are hard to stump. Proverbs 26:1. All right, let's see if we can stump Mr. Epperson here. The whisper of envy.
echoes louder than the shout of praise. I'm gonna go Navarb. Good work, man. It's an obverb.
Okay, you got it. You got it. I tell you.
Well done. I was broken. We got to stump somebody.
Some day they're like, I have been stumped before. It stumped even me before. I've lost track of it. Think about the AI, how it takes that. Yes.
I don't want to say the word twist. But it reminds me of an ancient foe of ours. Oh, who kind of before AI. Right. In fact, he is AI.
It's all artificial. He's not a genuine. Thing about him. That's right.
And, you know, Nebuchadnezzar told the servants of Satan. He said I tell you what, tell me not just the interpretation of my dream, but tell me my dream. Yeah, yeah. And they, the ones who advertise that they could do that.
So. They had all these books, volumes of books.
So, as soon as Nebuchadnezzar told him their dream, they could work that thing and they could put the artificial intelligence all over that to tell him what he wanted to hear based on. Purilized. Oh, you've said that from the pulpit, Dr. Sha. You can use the Bible to justify any sin in your life.
Oh, yeah. If you really wanted to, you can do that, but it's not the word of God. That's right.
So we see that. Original artificial intelligence. That's right.
This isn't from God, but a twist of God when Satan in the garden, original says where the original sin comes out. Yes. Yes. Hath God really said. That's the very first thing he attacked was God's word.
Right there. He attacks God's Word, which I I'm so glad I'm sitting next to this guy who has written so much prolifically on. The Authenticity. The veracity, the purity of God's word. That's right.
Proverbs 35: every word of God is pure. That's right.
He is a shield to those who put their trust in him. It's a safe place. It is a proverb, it is a promise, it's real. And what you've done in your books, you know, combating that, because that's where all these Secular college professors, that's the first place they go. That's right.
I'm going to absolutely. defang and destroy. Yeah.
Take apart everything you believe about God.
So that's right.
Well, thank you. Thank you.
This is a very high honor. Do you want to read for us the verse of the day? I got it right here. And it is from Daniel, which I referenced a second ago. And it is from chapter 2, and it's part of Daniel's rich prayer.
And so I'll read it to you. It's actually 21 and 22 of Daniel chapter 2. He gives wisdom to the wise. And knowledge to those who have understanding, he reveals deep and secret things. He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with him.
Wow. Isn't that crazy, Dr. Shudd, that people these days don't even want deep secret things. They don't even want it. It's not even the matter of, like, oh, that deep knowledge of God is out there.
I'm just discouraged because I can't get it. It feels like most Christians these days don't even want it. Yeah, and the sad reality is sometimes our messages are so. Filled with platitudes, they're not. Filled with the depth of God's word and the riches of the knowledge of Christ.
And that's what we need. And that's right here what Daniel is saying here, that God reveals that wisdom. God gives us the knowledge to those who have understanding, those who desire. They will grow in the word of God. You've held up Daniel before, Dr.
Shah, as sort of an example of bloom where you're planted and living in this life of exile, what it means to shine in exile. And that was helpful for people as they were walking through the past, you know, several years of the country being upside down. And by God's grace, we're seeing a lot of turnaround now, but there's still darkness in the land, there's still unbelief in the land. And so, in a lot of ways, the book of Daniel and Daniel's life parallels what it means to live as a believer in a dark and trying time. Absolutely.
And praise God that things are changing, but our work is not done. It's far from done. And the enemy is active. And we, as Christians, cannot just sit back and say, okay, great, man. It's wonderful to see.
that Christianity is on an upswing or whatever, but it's we're far from that. There's so much more work has to be done. That's right.
Well, and the world is full of Nebuchadnezzar's who want answers to their questions and answers to their confusing dreams. And it's just really interesting. You have this. Daniel 2 portrayal of every wise guy in the world. I mean, these guys were Erudite.
The Chaldeans, they were the scholars. They were the linguists. They knew all the languages. You know, you have the Magi, and the astrologers, they studied the stars. They were very sharp scientists.
I mean, a lot of scientific. I learned last week that the 60 seconds. That we have every watch has 60 seconds, right? There's 60 minutes in an hour, 60 seconds in a minute. That came from Babylon.
Wow. Like, there were some brilliant scholarship. You know, the wise men that came to Jesus, they came from the East, influenced by all of that. Yet Nebuchadnezzar was so. Absolutely.
Frustrated and just at the end of it is just you know patience with all these guys that were just filling him with worldly wisdom, right? The wisdom of the world, which we know what James 3 tells us, that leads to. It leads to conflict and vitriol and anger, and just it just leads to chaos and emptiness and hopeless. It's feckless, it's got nothing to offer. They've been pumping that into Nebuchadnezzar, probably into his pops, into his grandpops.
And finally, he said, Look, y'all don't tell me this by tomorrow. I'm gonna kill all you guys. He says, I'm gonna cut you into pieces. That's right.
That's what he said.
So when the sergeant of arms goes to Daniel's place. in with his execution sword. And he says, Okay, let's go. Gather your things, or actually don't gather your things. We're going to take you to the holding place to kill you.
Daniel says, Hey, let me just, and God gave Daniel wisdom in favor of the pattern. And Daniel says, Let me go to the king. And Daniel doesn't ask the king for... The dream, which everyone else did, so he could manipulate an answer. He says, just give me time.
To go before the king of kings. Right. And in that moment, that verse came out of that prayer. That's right.
Because the world is longing and hungry for answers. Right. You know, it's funny. It's just things. You know, the revelation of truth, which we have.
You're right. You're 100% right. And it's funny how God has brought us together because we've been talking about that exact thing this entire week. You know, Nicole was on the show. Nicole's just gotten her master's degree, I should say, in Christian counseling.
And so we've been having her on a couple episodes, Dr. Shah, talking to you about counseling, but how people will come and they just want the answers, just like Nebuchadnezzar. They don't want to be walked to that place. They don't want to go on that journey with the King of Kings. They just want you to tell me the answer.
And if you can't tell me the answer, I'm going to get really frustrated. I'm going to go out and make bad decisions on all this stuff. And you've seen that in your pastor. Oh, absolutely. And exactly what we're talking about here.
They want the answers, but they're not willing to put in the work. That's right.
And that's where we come in, whether as a church or the radio network, is to help people understand the need for biblical wisdom in their lives to understand, of course, the gospel. The gospel is primary, but the next step is to walk in that gospel, to walk in that light. The truth of God, that's what it's about. That's right.
And so we encourage people to grow. Don't just come and get what you want Sunday morning and then leave. No, day to day, grow in the Word. That's right.
Walk with Christ. And the connection, what you just said right there, walking with Christ. One of the Chaldeans, the spokesperson for all these groups, who said to the king, this is impossible. He said, No one. of flesh.
Can answer this. And it's interesting, one of my Bible study guys said this out loud in the middle of this conversation. We were having He said. Isn't it interesting that John chapter 1 says the word became flesh? Flesh, yeah.
Yes, yeah. And so it's so much more. Than connecting them with an answer. Right. It's so much more than being right.
It's so much about introducing them. Yeah.
And isn't it neat that God put our human flesh on? He put our frailty. He had fingers and toes and knees and ankles. And he walked. Among us.
and we beheld his glory. That's right.
And so if we can just connect people. with Jesus. He is the wisdom of them. That's right.
That's right.
That's right.
I know. You want to know the secret? You want to know the revelation? You want to know the answer? He is the way, the truth, the life.
And it's in that relationship. Honestly, that everything changes. It's connecting. It's the old I heard a pastor say once, he said, it's not so much. being like Jesus It's being with Jesus.
Amen. Good point. Good point. That's right.
And that becomes incarnational. And then you become like who you hang out with. That's right.
That's it.
So I'm going to walk out of here a lot more blessed than when I walked in here. Oh, man. A lot more encouraged.
Some of these things I'm going to share with my next meeting because that's how, because I was connected with y'all and y'all connected me to the Holy Spirit's movement in your life, your heart, right?
So the Jesus in you rubbed off on me. But that's what we are, we're out there. Literally incarnating and walking as we are. We are that. What does he say in 2 Corinthians 1 and 2?
We're like that smell, that sweet smelling incense. There's an odor about him, right? And then he says, you are letters written. Right? By the Holy Spirit.
So there's like, we're a book. People are reading this. Right. All the time. That's right.
And the question is, is that pointing people to that, to that, to Jesus, absolutely? I can't fix it, and the council will say that. Right. The court will say that. I can't fix anybody that walks this room.
That's right.
But I know. And verse 23. Where Daniel says, Earlier on, he says, there is. A God in heaven. Yes.
Amen. Amen. Stu, right before we started, right before we started and pressed record, you said you had a special presentation.
Well, I'm excited. I really love it. Oh, do you have a drum roll? Oh, yes, absolutely. You ready?
You ready for it? Yeah, let's hit it. Here it is.
So Dr. Shaw. This broadcast, I'm not sure the timing of it with the celebration of life for Dr. John MacArthur. Yes, yes, yes.
So, for those who are exposures of God's word, which you are, you may not. You know, not everyone agrees with every theologian, right? If we sat in this chair long enough, we'd find disagreements. But in terms of the. contribution of the Word of God.
And so I went to his school. The Masters University in California. And I would like to present with you. One of the most powerful Life Changers For Not thousands, but millions of people. This is a cassette.
Now some of you may not recognize this. Yeah, I was going to say it's like a little square rectangle.
Some of these sprouts in your studio, Doc, may not, but that is a Dr. John MacArthur sermon. From 9991. That's amazing. That is amazing.
Isaiah 6: The Holiness of God. Wow. Wow. And that's the whole chapel. And I wanted to bring that to you for the master's college.
I heard that person. I am so grateful.
So it's just, you know, there's. There's, by the way, thousands of those cassettes float around. But I listen to those. You listen to those. Yes.
Yes. Yes. I talk to more people in a lot of different camps. You know, they'd say, I listen to these little cassette tapes. What brings back a lot of memories because my dad was listening to John MacArthur back in the mid-80s.
And I remember walking past his office desk, and he would have these Grace to You tapes. Tapes sitting there. And I asked him, I was like, who is this John MacArthur? And he told me he's a famous pastor, and I really like him. And I didn't give it a second thought because it was like, okay, that's dad's somebody he's listening to.
Somebody he likes, somebody he likes. And then, when I answer the call to go in the ministry, then it's like, oh. John MacArthur. I don't remember that name. And I used to listen to him on the Radio WRAF to Coil Falls, Georgia, and they had John MacArthur.
I would listen to him almost every morning. Wow. Yes. That's amazing. We need to get a display.
We need to get a little display to stand on the set. That needs to become part of the set. Cool. That's really good.
Well, thank you. This is a great honor. Great honor. Just the power of God's word. A man showed up at a little church on Roscoe Boulevard in Southern California.
Just outside of Los Angeles.
Okay. And they said, so you're going to preach, you know, and you're going to audition to preach here. And he said I'm going to preach through the word. I'm going to study 20 hours a week. I've got to protect that study.
Glad to marry some people, glad to bury some people, glad to visit some hospitals, but I'm going to equip Ephesians 4:12. That's right.
My leaders, I want strong elders to do that. That's right.
So I can be at my desk. Pouring into the word, letting the word pour into me so I could feed my flock. And they said, okay, well, you got 45 minutes, an hour and a half exposition. Wow. Probably three verses.
You know, you know, John. Oh, yeah. So he did Matthew in, like, I'm going to get this wrong. It's a four-volume set. He did the book of Matthew in 12 years.
Oh, wow. Wow. This Sunday night. The last verse of Matthew 28. And when he closed his Bible and said amen and finished that last verse, he got a standing ovation from his congregation.
I can imagine so.
Well earned. I have the four-volume commentary. It's a tribute to a man who said, I'm committed to this. And he may have gone over an hour and a half, but he said, I want to do this, I want to teach. And what was a few hundred people?
Mm-hmm. In kind of a suburb of LA, but not a super dense area, but out in Southern California, is now a church of. I don't know, five or 10,000 people. There is a seminary that's very exposition, you know, it's very exegetical. That's right.
Like, you will go to that seminary. You may not learn all the program stuff and some of the psychology and this and that, but you will know your Hebrew, your Greek, and you will know how to take you through the Bible. There you go. Which is the source of everything. You start there.
Right. And out of that comes all the answers. Right. A college that's thriving, that's a liberal arts school. And.
Over 2 million of those cassette tapes all over the world. And now he's on in all these languages, and he's got 100 books and such and so. If you went to John MacArthur's house, He passed away a few weeks ago. If you went to his house a few months ago, Even in his frail condition. You know, going to the doctor's medication, all that stuff, you would find him studying.
That's right.
God's word. Amen. Amen. To bring the word of God. And that's what, when I see pastors like you, Dr.
Shaw, I'm so encouraged that there's a legacy, and I see the growth here. Every time I come out here, there's more views, there's more fixtures, there's more mic booms, there's more studios. But it's a tribute to God's word. It's so, we all, every pastor believes God's word. Right.
But sadly, we've got comedian pastor, we've got TED Talk pastor, we've got motivational speaker pastor, we've got entertainment pastor, and be winsome, have fun. This guy's winsome, he shares things that are hilarious. I hear listen to the radio show, this podcast, even when you preach. But the word of God is the dominating thing. That's right.
That's right.
And so TED Talks from the pulpits are producing spiritual illiteracy in the pews in our culture today. And so, Pastor, your people are starving. That's right.
You're never going to compete with Madison Avenue.
So just start in Romans chapter 1, verse 1. That's right.
Amen. Or Judges 1:1. That's right.
And just teach and just bring your people, bring the word of God to your people. And bring your people to the word of God and watch what God can do through his word. I know that's been your methodology for years now.
Well, you know, on our show, when we talked about John MacArthur, we did two episodes. I brought out his book, Rediscovering Expository Preaching. It was a thick book. Different members of the faculty wrote that book. It was great, and I recommended that again and again because if only pastors would do that, take the time to study God's Word and teach it.
You don't have to be a John MacArthur, but you can just be you, but. Focus on the word of God and let it do its work, it's amazing what you'll find. You'll find it, and it's all laid out there for you. It is. People don't realize that teaching through books of the Bible, like you all do here.
I mean, when you're Monday morning planning meeting with your staff, you literally are thinking, okay, let's see, let's see this month, the return of the Jedi.
Okay, there you go.
Next month, Casper the Friendly Ghost. You know, whatever the theme is, you know, we're going to go to the movies. I mean, and I'm not saying don't have fun stuff like that. And I love parodies and I love movie references and all that. I do use them all the time.
But literally, if you just open 1 Peter chapter 1. Just take those first few verses. That's right.
And they are jam-packed with stuff. Absolutely. Absolutely. Forenew us? What does that mean?
Yeah.
And just go into the word and let scripture interpret scripture. Yeah.
Who's Peter talking to? Exiles. That's right.
He's talking to people who are dispersed abroad. What's going on? How could he relate to them? Right. You know, and you have all these God of Second Chances stories in 1 Peter.
I'm just grabbing a book. Yeah, right. But like the outline, you've got five chapters. That's right.
Probably can't do a chapter a week. You know, so I have a pastor, I talked to a Truth Network pastor who's, I said, what's your next book? He said, 2 Peter. I said, How long are you in Second Peter? He held up three fingers.
I said, well, it can't be three weeks. Maybe it's three months. He said, no, three years. Three years in the second Peter. That's incredible.
So he's going to go in. And of course, It touches on all Old Testament stuff. Yeah.
It touches on all this apocalyptic language about the second coming. That's right.
And so he's going to really just drill deep to take his people because what you're doing is you're laying a foundation. That's right.
Foundations are not easy to lay. Right. That's right.
We would not have this studio. You would not have this church if your foundation was crumbling. 100%. Right. And so you're trying to get people really fortified.
So when the sweet, nice politician comes along and says, oh, yeah, well, you know, pro-life or gender confusion, all these Christians run after those guys. Like, this guy's like, that's, that's a lie. That's right.
Right. But we don't, the discernment comes through training in the word and being meat eaters, not just milk eaters like Hebrews chapter 5 talks about. That's right.
And so that's just so important.
So I love encouraging pastors. Hey, spend time with the word. Like you said, study it. Amen. Amen.
And let it start to study you. That's right.
And then all you are is you're taking thus saith the Lord. I mean, that's an Awesome privilege to stand in that pulpit. And people will discern. You know, the more you expose them to the truth, they will discern when something is fake, something is a counterfeit. Like we began with the AI.
They will know that that didn't sound right. Like, just like we did over the Proverbs. That did not sound biblical. That's right.
You expose them to enough truth, they'll be able to see that. They'll be able to recognize it. That's right.
In the end times, you read 2 Timothy chapter 3, you see in the last days. Yes. Right. All of this mass proliferation of people having these dreams and people having these visions and these words. And you got to like, let me tell you something.
You had some really bad, you know, ethnic food last night. Check your diet. Expired pizza last night. You didn't have it. You know, that didn't come from God.
Right. We just have to have it. It doesn't mean God doesn't speak today and work today and move today. Right. But just having that discernment, and that's so foundational.
And especially when we are. Stewards to carry this gospel to a lost world. Amen. That's right.
Because they're hungry and they need the Lord. And the only thing you can fill that emptiness in them is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Amen. So that's where we got to have it right here. We got to gather to be built up so we can go out there.
You know, Pastor Shaw, he can't be swinging a wrench in an auto shop. He's not a PA down there assisting in surgery at Duke Medical. No. He's not down here doing the, you know, the heavy lifting, calling a refereeing a football game. You know, he's not coaching the basketball team over here.
He can't do all those things. Let me tell you who sits in this church every week. Who sits in every church every week? All of those things. Coaches and teachers and doctors and PAs and medical assistors and janitors and guys that run gas stations.
And so when you're pouring into them, you are equipping, building them up so that they go out and do the work of the ministry. They are super spreaders of the good news of Christ.
So the church gathers to build up, not to have some seeker-sensitive dumb it down and give them a bunch of milk. Oh, we don't want to lose that. We love that. We want to build them up. I want someone to walk out of here saying, what does the word sanctification mean?
I'm so glad you asked. Let's talk about that because it's in the Bible. Let's not run from that. Let's not be afraid. Let's not go ask unbelievers, the natural man who knows not the things of God because it fools them.
You know, 1 Corinthians 2:14, let's not go ask them what they want to hear from the pulpit and then just dumb it all down. Let's go deep in the word in a loving, winsome way, making Jesus Christ the star. He's the author. Christiocentric, bibliocentric, and then misiocentric preaching. That's right.
That sends people out in this world to be, you know, life changes. Jesus Christ. Amen. You really described us right there. That's 100%.
That's our mission. That's our identity. That's right.
Making Christ visible in everything that we do. I love it so much. It's conversations like this that are so helpful for us as well, reminding us of what the mission is, what we're called to. Stu, as we close, what can you share with us about the Truth Network? Anything new and exciting on the horizon?
I tell you, well, a lot of new things. We're growing, we're going. And our passion, who we are is the truth network. What we do is network truth. Yeah.
And so we do that by putting your kind of content. Clear view today, these wonderful pastors, teachers like Pastor Shaw on the radio.
So people are built up. They can get plugged into a local church. That's God's plan A. That's right.
That's right.
We're our church. We want to send them here to be built up. And then we want to just inspire them as they go in the highways and the byways to spread the gospel. A large percentage of Christian radio listeners are unchurched. And so we're reaching them.
And I get letters from people that just tell us how the station's changed their life, heal their marriage. Because they heard the word of God. Amen. It's not a station that changes anyone. Jesus changes people.
That's right.
We're all little stations, right? We're just like, we're vessels, channels God can use. God speaks to us, so He can speak through us. To bring people to him.
So just keep praying for the truth that we're because we will, you know, we'll continue to be faithful, to put solid content on. And we're in the social world with Instagram and Stu Graham, I like to call it. All the different channels, YouTube and all this, podcasting, all that, again, to try to reach as many as possible. The biggest one is global. Yeah.
We want every person in India. every person in Africa to hear the gospel. That's tremendous. There's three billion on our planet who've never heard. And that's a real problem.
It is a problem. That should keep me up at night instead of all my little problems. They're tiny compared To the problem of someone who's on their way to a Christeless eternity. That's right.
We have the answer. We have the technology. I can go on this little smartphone, smartphones for dumb people, right? And I can tell a whole lot of people about Jesus with just a peck of the finger. And you think about that with the languages, with AI, how can we use that?
That's right.
