Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the Word of God to be spread throughout the world so that all may know Christ. Join us now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church located in Kernersville, North Carolina. There's a lot of people that claim to be Christians that are not Christians but biblical Christianity is supernatural from beginning to end.
Listen to me. It is centered in a supernatural person, the Lord Jesus Christ. It begins with a supernatural experience known as the new birth or salvation. Just salvation is supernatural and we can't fully understand it. It is made possible by the supernatural ministry of the Holy Spirit.
It's great teachings. Biblical Christianity, the teachings are contained in a supernatural book called the Bible. The church is a supernatural phenomenon. It has been since it was instituted by God. One day, by the way, the church will be taken away and withdrawn by a supernatural event called the rapture.
And we are all still trying to figure that out. The Holy Spirit, by the way, imparts divine life into a dead soul. That's what the Holy Spirit does.
It is supernatural. The Holy Spirit does things that you and I don't even fathom. It does many things that you and I know and the Holy Spirit is that entity of God that will from time to time bring supernatural revival to a church. And I don't know about you but I say bring it on Holy Spirit.
We need it. So what does the Holy Spirit do? Now just hold your place where you're at. Now if you want to turn, I'm going to give you a couple things by way of introduction so that you understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Now here it is. This morning, very briefly, I'm going to deal with what the Holy Spirit does to those that are saved and the ministry that the Holy Spirit has to those who are not saved.
Very simple. Number one, the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. That's where it all began. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. Now Brother Ben is going to put up a verse and I'm going to read the verses beforehand because I'm afraid that some will lose because they won't turn to it. Now listen to me. Luke chapter 4 beginning in verse 14.
I want you to understand this. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about. Jesus returns to Galilee the beginning of His ministry. Verse 15 and He taught them in their synagogues being glorified of all. And He came to Nazareth. Listen to what it says where He had been brought up. Here Jesus had left Nazareth.
He's grown up. He's come back begun His earthly ministry. He comes back to the place where He was brought up.
This is what it says. And as His custom was He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto Him the book of the prophet Isaiah.
And when He opened the book He found the place where it was written. Now He goes to the synagogue. They bring the Old Testament scrolls from Isaiah. And do we have that verse Ben? Luke chapter 4 verse 18. This is the next verse. As Jesus opens up that scroll He reads what was a prophecy concerning the Messiah. It says this, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me and hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of the sight to the blind to set at liberty them that are bruised.
Now listen to me very very closely. This is what it means. Jesus takes out the scrolls and reads what was prophesied about the Messiah. And what it says is that when the Messiah would come that the Spirit of the Lord would be upon Him and that He would be anointed by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the Lord. He would be anointed to preach the gospel to the poor. So we see right here first thing the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. Now you say why did Jesus need to be anointed? He's the Son of God.
He is God. Dear friend that gives us a clear picture of the different ministries of the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit anointed the Son to give Him power on earth. Secondly the Holy Spirit anoints us. Did you know that?
I hope you did. Now I'm going to read you this verse 1 John chapter 2 verse 18. Little children it is the last time as ye have heard that antichrist shall come. Now we're being taught what will happen in the future. The antichrist shall come. Even now are there many antichrists whereby we know that it is the last time.
Now listen to this. They went out from us but they were not of us. Boy is that a phrase for the church. They went out they left from us but they were never of us. For if they had been of us they would no doubt have continued with us.
But they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. Listen to this verse is up on the screen. Verse John 2 20. But ye have an unction from the Holy One and ye know all things. Look at me dear friend you have an unction if you've been saved. You have an unction from the Holy Spirit.
You have been anointed by Him. So that you can understand God's Word. People say I read the Bible Preacher but I don't understand it. You just keep reading it. It is the Holy Spirit's job to teach you.
You have unction whether you know it or not. You have been divinely anointed. Don't you feel special this morning? When your waitress comes to you at lunch they say hey I want you to know I have been anointed by the Holy Spirit of God.
And she's going to go what a weirdo go back to the kitchen. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. The Holy Spirit anoints us. Third the Holy Spirit indwells us. Now this is very important.
This is very important. Go ahead and put that verse up there Benny. Romans chapter 8 verse 9. But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his. So if you are Christ if you put your faith in Christ then the Spirit dwells in you. Now listen I'm going to read the two verses after that in verse 10. And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life unto righteousness. That means when you die that old body that earthly temple is dead but the Spirit is alive unto righteousness is what it says. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead also shall quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Guess what? He indwells you. Why is that important? When you get saved the Holy Spirit moves into your heart. Lives in your life. Your soul and spirit. Not your body. You say you mean the Holy Spirit doesn't live in the body? No he doesn't. He lives in the soul and the spirit.
You say how is that? Well let me read you a verse. Romans chapter 7 verse 18. Paul says this for I know that in me dwelleth no good thing.
Paul says in me there's nothing good. So that means the Holy Spirit doesn't live in the body. The Holy Spirit lives in the soul and spirit. He indwells you.
Say why is that important? Because if the Holy Spirit indwells you the Bible just said that the Holy Spirit is the one that raised Jesus from the dead. And if he lifted him from the dead he lives in you he'll lift you. Now that's important.
Now listen to me. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus the Holy Spirit anoints you and the Holy Spirit indwells you. If you've been saved now because he indwells you that opens up another whole book of all that the Holy Spirit does to you.
He convicts you. All kinds of things and edifies you and teaches you and the Holy Spirit draws you. All these things is because the Holy Spirit indwells you.
Ok we understand that. That's the ministry of the Holy Spirit to those that are saved. He anoints you. He indwells you and because he indwells you he now has a whole ministry for you as the Holy Spirit of God. But what does he do? What does he do for the unsaid? I want to read you this quote.
I thought this was good. Dr. Finney great preacher man of God obviously we heard of the great revival of the DL movie and Charles Finney and all these things. Listen Finney wrote this and I thought this was very interesting how God gave him what he called the infillings of the Holy Spirit. He said the Holy Spirit that went through me as it seemed body and soul. I immediately found myself in dude with such power from on high that only a few words given here and there to individuals were the means by their immediate conversion. That means this.
He would just simply quickly give a word or two of the gospel and people would be so convicted by the Holy Spirit of God that they would get saved right on the spot. Now listen to what he says. My words seem to fasten like barbed arrows in the souls of men. They cut like a sword. They broke the heart like a hammer. Multitudes can attest to this. Sometimes Finney wrote I would find myself in a great measure empty of this power.
I would go and visit and find that I made no impression at all. I would exhort and pray and I would only get the same results. This has been the experience of my life. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Listen dear friend when you got saved you got as much of the Holy Spirit as you will ever get. The problem is he didn't get all of you. When you're controlled by the Spirit he gets more of you.
You got all of him you'll ever get. What Finney wrote here is the Holy Spirit was in me but when I went away from the Lord I had no power. But when I humbled myself and drew nigh back to God then I had that kind of power. Alright the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus. He anoints us. He indwells us and because of that we have a whole ministry that the Holy Spirit does to us. There are three major ministries that the Holy Spirit has to what we call unregenerate man. Unsaved individuals. And I want you to understand this before we go home today.
Number one is this. His restraining ministry. II Thessalonians chapter 2.
You have it. Look at verse 3. Verse 6 and 7.
Ben will go ahead and put up on the screen but I want you to look at this as I've had you turn to it. Look at verse 3. Let no man deceive you by any means for that day shall not come except there come a following away first. What do we mean that day? We're talking about obviously the tribulation time. We're talking about the antichrist rising up and getting power over the earth. He said that day shall not come except there be a falling away first.
What do you mean a falling away? That means those that claim to be Christians there will be a falling away. That means they never were really saved but they claim to be. And as we get closer to the time when the Lord will return there will be a falling away from the faith.
And I believe it's already happening. And it says except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed. The antichrist. That man of sin be revealed. The son of perdition. He's called that man of sin. He's called the son of perdition. He's called the antichrist.
Okay. Verse 4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped so that he is God sitteth in the temple of God showing himself that he is God. What is the antichrist going to do? He's going to claim that he's God and people on earth will believe him.
They will believe a lie. Now look at verse 5. This is what he says. Remember ye not that we when I was yet with you I told you these things. Look at verse 6. And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. Now that's a very confusing phrase.
Listen. He says now ye know what withholdeth. That means something is holding things back until he might be revealed. Something is holding things back until the antichrist be revealed. In other words the power of the antichrist folks look at me would have complete dominion over us right now if it wasn't for something holding that back.
You got that. Look at verse 7. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work only he who now letteth.
That word letteth means hindereth. That means what we're talking about in verse 6 is the same thing we're talking about in verse 7. Whoever is hindering stopping holding back the work of sin.
Listen to this. Only he who now letteth will let another work until he be taken out of the way. Now look at verse 8. And then shall that wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth. Alright I got your attention.
Are you ready? You see buckle. Listen.
This excites me. Verse 6 it says he might be revealed. That he is the antichrist. Now verse 7. It says he that letteth. Now what's interesting is in verse 6. Notice this.
This is exciting. Look at verse 6. And now ye know what withholdeth.
What is holding back. Then in verse 7 it says for the mystery of the iniquity doth already work only he who now letteth or hindereth. So in verse 6 it says what is hindering. Verse 7 it says that he is hindering. It's talking about the Holy Spirit. In other words the Holy Spirit is restraining right now while you and I are sitting here. I can preach the gospel to you and your mind can hear it, fathom it, process it and you can be convicted by the power of God only because the Holy Spirit right now is restraining the power of Satan. You say how do you know it's the Holy Spirit right there.
Well very interesting. In verse 6 it's called what. In verse 7 it's called he.
In biblical language or in the Greek it's what we call this. It means masculine and neuter. Neuter means there's no gender. What.
What would be neuter. He is masculine. How do you know it's the Holy Spirit of God preacher. Well the reason he said it that way he referred to it in the neuter then referred to it in the masculine proves it's the Holy Spirit of God. Listen to me. When Jesus came to earth he was God and what?
Man. Do you know what the Holy Spirit is? The Holy Spirit is God and spirit.
Did you realize that? We always talk about Jesus was God and man when he came to earth. Because that member of the Godhead, the son Jesus came to earth and manifested himself as mankind.
So he was God and man. You know what the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost is? He is God and has manifest himself as a spirit. That's why in verse 6 when it says what is talking about the spirit side of the Holy Spirit there's no gender for spirit. But then in verse 7 when he says he hindereth that's talking about the God side of the Holy Spirit.
Anybody else excited about that? He's God and spirit. That's why you and I if we're going to worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.
Say preacher what does that mean to me? Listen to me. Only the Holy Spirit is restraining the power of sin in this world.
Listen to me. Satan is the prince and power of the air. So he will have dominion and he will let everything unleashed as soon as the Holy Spirit is removed. Now look at me.
This is exciting. Why do we at this church believe in the pre-tribulation rapture? We believe the church will be raptured before the tribulation period. Because the Bible says that sin can only have power, the tribulation period, it can only have power when the Holy Spirit is removed. And the Holy Spirit lives where? So we have to be out of here for him to have the power.
You're not going to face the tribulation period folks because Satan can't have power as long as the Holy Spirit has dominion on this earth and he lives inside of us so for him to be removed we have to be removed. All God's people said. The restraining ministry of the Holy Spirit. Second the reproving ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Remember unregenerate man. What does this mean preacher? John chapter 16.
If you want to turn to it please do. I will show one of the verses up on the screen for you. John chapter 16 verse 7.
Listen. Nevertheless I tell you the truth it is expedient for you Jesus says that I go away. For if I go not away the comforter or the Holy Spirit will not come unto you. But if I depart Jesus says I will send him the Holy Spirit unto you.
Now listen. Verse 8. That's going to be on the screen. John chapter 16 verse 8. And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. So he has a reproving ministry on earth.
What is it? Three things. He reproves of sin, righteousness and judgment. That means this. First he reproves of the nature of sin. Second he reproves of the need for righteousness. And third he reproves of the nearness of judgment.
You say prove that. Look at verse 9, 10 and 11. Of sin because they believe not on me. Of righteousness verse 10 because I go to my father and ye see me no more. Verse 11 of judgment because the prince of this world is judged. What does the Holy Spirit do?
Look at me folks. He reproves you and I of sin. Reprove means to correct.
Amazingly if you look up the dictionary definition of reproving it means to correct but gently. Isn't it nice to know the Holy Spirit is gentle with us? If we were God we would slap ourselves.
We would be so sick of ourselves. The Holy Spirit gently reproves. When there is sin he reproves.
Why? Well because of the righteousness of God. He reproves of righteousness.
Why? Jesus says because I have to leave. You see Jesus was the example of righteousness here on earth. He lived a sinless life.
But when he had to leave look at me there would be no more example. So the Holy Spirit is here to teach us righteousness. Third because of judgment.
Listen to me dear friend. Why is the Holy Spirit reproving? Why is the Holy Spirit reproving us of judgment? Because judgment is near. And the Holy Spirit has to correct us. The Holy Spirit is the one that changes us and works on us and molds us and lets us know hey there is sin in your life. Hey there is a lack of righteousness in your life.
Hey judgment time is coming. The Holy Spirit does all that but I got a question. Look at verse 7 that you just read in John chapter 16 verse 7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth Jesus is speaking here. It is expedient for you that I go away for if I go not away the comforter will not come unto you. Why would the Holy Spirit not come as long as Jesus was here?
Now you are going to hold onto your seats again. Listen to me. The Holy Spirit would not come to earth while Jesus was here on earth because the Holy Spirit will never out shadow the sun. In fact the Bible says that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is always to glorify the sun.
He would not come close here while Jesus was here because he's not going to be in any way where he could be overshadowing the sun. And listen to me. What does that teach us? Jesus says if I leave he will come. But he won't come till I leave. And he said it is expedient for you or better for you Jesus says if I go to heaven because the Holy Spirit has certain ministries in your life that Jesus doesn't. Jesus saved you.
He died for you. But the Holy Spirit is the one that quickens you. The Holy Spirit is the one that seals you. So Jesus says it's good if he comes because he can do things that's just not my job to do.
Now why would he not come? Listen to me. You and I cannot be too occupied with Christ. The more Christ we get the more we spend our time on him the better it is. But it is to be feared nowadays that the great emphasis has moved away from Christ to the Holy Spirit.
Any movement, religion, belief, look at me now. Any movement that puts the preeminence on the Holy Spirit above Christ is wrong. You have individuals that believe far different than you do but when all they talk about is the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit and they're not talking about Christ.
Listen to me. There's a problem because the Holy Spirit biblically never outshadows, never is talked about more. He never does that to the Son. In fact everything the Holy Spirit does is points to the Son.
Points to the Son. He didn't come till he left and when he gets to heaven he's going to take that underneath role because the Son gets all the judgment the Bible says in heaven. So you better be careful that you don't believe anything that emphasizes the Holy Spirit over Christ. Christ centered preaching is what's needed today. Not Holy Spirit actions. Christ centered preaching. Do you see the difference? Dear friend in your life and whatever you believe we're not here to try to make you a member of this church. We're here.
We are who we are. But you be careful that you don't ever get mixed up in anything that makes more of the Holy Spirit. Than it does of Jesus. Because that's not biblical. All God's people said, are you going to go to lunch feeling like you've at least learned something? Number three.
And I'll let you go to that lunch that I just talked about. His regenerating ministry. Oh hallelujah praise God right here. His restraining ministry holding back the power of Satan.
His reproving ministry which is the ministry of conviction. Allowing an unbeliever to Christ. If you don't realize this is exactly what I'm describing to you as what the Holy Spirit did to you before you got saved. He held back the power of Satan on your life to give you long enough to be reproved by the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
And then the choice was up to you. Either you're going to say yes to Christ or you're going to say no to Christ but the Holy Spirit gave you a chance. He held back the power of sin in your life and dear friend what we believe is the unpardonable sin in the New Testament that it talks about is when a person rejects the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that there is the sin where you cannot come back from. It is the unpardonable sin. And when you commit the unpardonable sin the Holy Spirit quits trying. He leaves you.
He doesn't convict anymore. He doesn't draw you to Christ anymore. We believe when the Holy Spirit stops that you can't be saved.
You say why? Because you won't want to be saved. If there is any part of you that has a desire to be saved dear friend you have not committed the unpardonable sin yet. Because if you did you wouldn't even desire to be saved. The regenerating ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Now last time we'll turn. John chapter 3 verse 5. That verse will be up on the screen. That which is born of the flesh that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee ye must be born again.
The regenerating ministry of the Holy Spirit. Notice verse 6. It did not say that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of Spirit is Spirit. It said that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. There is only one Holy Spirit. Now you say preacher explain all this to me I'm glad you asked.
Notice if you would in verse 5. Jesus answered and said except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. So we know that the Holy Spirit has to be involved in the regenerating process for you and I to go to heaven. But he said born of water and of the Spirit. Now there are some religious beliefs that say that means baptism. That's why they believe you have to be baptized in order to go to heaven.
And dear friend that's not at all what it's talking about here. Notice the terminology that is asked after he says this. Notice if you would in verse well it's earlier than that. Look at verse 3. John chapter 3 verse 3.
Jesus answered and said unto him verily verily I say unto thee except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him how can a man be born when he is old can he enter a second time into his mother's womb? So what we are talking about here is the birth process. By the way all you ladies ought to say thank God that the second birth is not them coming back in your womb and being born again.
You think it was hard to the first time try that on for size. What does it mean to be born of water and of the Spirit? Let me give you a little bit of a science lesson and most all that have had children know exactly what I'm talking about. When a mother has a child in her womb that child is protected by a seal of water. That's why when it comes close to a time a baby is to be born that water will break.
Sometimes the doctors will have to do that. That means that baby is sealed and protected by that water. What he's talking about here is that a man in order to go to heaven has to be born of water. That's physical birth. And then he has to be born of the Spirit. That's spiritual birth. So there must be the first birth and there must be the second birth. The Bible says born and born again. So in order for you to go to heaven and for me to go to heaven we had to be born physically. By the way you've already covered that whether you know it or not. Check that one off.
Number two. You have to be born of the Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit regenerates you.
Now listen to me. Titus 3 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done. But according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit does the regenerating work inside of your life. Now guess what Romans 8 11 says. Listen to this. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Enjoy our services live. And all our media on our website and church and thank you for listening to the current broadcast today. God bless you. You
