The First Rule of Fishing

The First Rule of Fishing

Clear Creek Colorado
My Father, Daughter Tess and Grand Daughter Lila

Last Week my Father took my daughter, Tess, my grand daughter, Lila, and me on amazing adventure to Colorado fishing. Yes, we drove, from North Carolina (I am the Christian Car Guy) and my 7 year old grand daughter only ask if we were there yet about 30 times. Kids in the back seat is part of the joy of a family adventure, memories we will all treasure for a lifetime but the one I will always treasure the most is the fishing lesson my grand daughter gave me when I had indeed violated the first rule of fishing.

We had not been there at Clear Creek Long, and sadly we had not caught but 4 fish after two long days of fishing and poor Lila had only reeled in one that I hooked the first day. As you may imagine I had plenty of chances in the last two days to bait hooks, untangle lines, clear snags and re-rig poles. We had my dad up creek a little bit and he was employing his favorite trout strategy with a salmon egg and a bubble. Lila, Tess and I were fishing a little water fall that I knew from previous years to hold a lot of fish and was excited to see that perhaps, Lila my grand daughter might catch one. Being a 7 year old however she was pretty impatient and as soon as she would cast the bait into the water she would exclaim, “I, got one, I got one”, and reel it in just moments after it hit the water. Then quite often she would swing her pole to much and tangle the line before the next cast and this scene was a repeat from the previous days on a couple lakes. Her mother kept getting snags down river that lead to some re-rigging and I was not where I should have been mood wise.

I’m sure, quite sharply, I told my granddaughter, “Lila, you have got to let leave the bait in the water long enough for a fish to find it! Wait till you feel a fish tug on it before you reel it in!”

To which Lila replied, “Papa, you have broken the FIRST RULE OF FISHING!”

Naturally shocked by this statement and also realizing I had been the only one to ever take Lila fishing I must have taught her this rule, I questioned, “I did, Lila what is the first rule of fishing?”

She Said, “HAVE FUN!”

Realizing Lila had hit the nail directly on the head I turned to the only thing I knew to do when I blow it and said, “Lila you are right, I am so sorry, let’s pray God will give your papa and you some more patience, and while we are at it, Jesus could you please help, Lila catch a fish.”

Lila cast her salmon egg into the waterfall and just then I noticed my daughter Tess had a snag a little down river and started down toward her, I hadn’t taken two steps when I heard that now familiar Lila call, “I got one, I got one!”

I turned to see, thinking, (ye of little faith) here we go again… But this time, Jesus to the rescue, LILA HAD A FISH AND A BIG ONE. I will never forget seeing that fish all over the river and Lila telling it, “I got you you little dickens!” as she reeled it in and sure enough it was probably the biggest fish anyone caught the whole trip.

To add to the joy Jesus allowed that Lila caught 4 more fish on the next 4 casts, my father caught six up river and Tess started catching them too, we caught 16 that morning I day I will never forget when we re-employed the first rule of fishing, “HAVE FUN!”…Oh and yes by all means bring along the greatest fisherman, EVER!!! Dad loves to catch Fish.

In these days we live in why not highlight the fun of Family instead of all that seems dark… After all who wouldn’t rather..”HAVE FUN” Go On a Car Adventure and have some with kids in the back seat!!

“New” Ideas To See In The Dark (Battle of The Headlamps)

“New” Ideas To See In The Dark (Battle of The Headlamps)

Driving at night theses days I am amazed at all the different configuration of headlamps coming at me. All different shapes, numbers and sizes; different colors, some blueish, some with bunches of mini lights, even green or red,  so what’s up with all this and does any of it really work any better than ‘Old Red’s’ good old halogen beams? Maybe you can tell by my picture above that I’m being sarcastic as Solomon noted, “There is nothing new under the sun”, not even light or perhaps especially light and the spiritual or as Lady Julianna of Norwich would say the”ghostly” is even more fascinating but first the practicality of good headlights.

I am guessing automotive engineers lay awake at night thinking of how to see better down the road at night. There are so many complex issues that disturb them; heat, brightness, reflection in weather, blinding other drivers, (the lasers might take the prize there). So the battle rages and the good news is that we all get the benefit, even us older car drivers because now they make conversion kits to get us the latest technology.

One of the coolest thing now offered in Europe not legal in the U.S. is ‘Adaptive LED’ lamps Consumer Reports tested them and was impressed. These babies used the many lights of little LED’s (light emitting diodes) with a computer throw out the maxim light based on your current driving situation. The future looks bright, don’t you think…..or perhaps it looks dark from your perspective. I’ve Got Good News there as well, perhaps the best. The Darker it gets the easier it is to see the light, allow me to illustrate with a story.

Years ago I was deer hunting in early January a freezing cold day. So cold I couldn’t stand it, so I decided to give up on hunting for a little while and partake of the sausage balls my wife had packed for me. I had just gotten the first one in my mouth, when out in the clearing in front of me jumped the biggest buck I had ever seen. I grabbed my rifle and fired, the buck staggered, jumped back up I fired again and he ran in the wood a little bit and laid down. That’s when I made a rookie hunting mistake and decided he must be dead and climbed down after him. I know you hunters reading this could already tell me what would transpire for the next few hours.

The deer would jump up and I would go after him and then he would jump up and the cycle went on until the trail ran out and I could no longer hear the deer and after about three hours of this I had totally lost any track or sign what so ever and after getting down on my hands and knees and looking for another couple of hours in concentric circles, I suddenly realized I was way back in the forest and had no idea where I was or which way back to the truck. It was about two o’clock and I had about three hours of daylight before it would get unbearably cold. Panic started to invade my mind when I remembered I had my cell phone.

I called the friend who had set up the deer lease who had hunted there for years. He asked if I could climb up any hill to get a look and see if I could see a line of pine trees. I saw a hill a little ways off and told him I would call him back when I was on top of it. So I climbed the hill and called him back. He then asked if I could see a definite line of pine trees separate from the hard woods. I could see it clearly. He went on to explain that the area had been logged a few years ago and if I would make my way down to that line of pines and keep the pines on my right and the hard wood on my left I would come out back at the road. “Great plan”, I thought and off I went sure that I was going to be fine.

A little more challenging than I thought, as that line took me through many a briar patch, ditch, pond you name it. Undaunted on and on I treaded till the sun crept down and down. Soaking wet and scratched, bruised and battered from head to foot the unthinkable happened. The line ran out and not at the road.

Now it was really starting to get dark and soaking wet this was not looking good for the home team. That’s when the thing I had feared became my friend, “The darkness”. You see as the darkness set in I could see a light way off in the distance through the woods. The darker it got, the clearer I could see it. I made my way falling over roots and ditches but the path was obvious, simply make your way towards the light.

Sure enough that light was a house and that house was on the road, although another four miles back to my truck once it was dark enough to see the light the path was clear.

Volumes and volumes could be written on just what the Bible and faith has to say about light… But for now let’s consider these.

John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Lady Julianna of Norwich “Thus I saw and understood that our faith is our light, in our night, which light is God our endless day.”

In my view every image bearer of God has a unique light that reflects God’s glory, when Jesus comes into your heart it begins to shine. This is a spectacle of Angelic proportions,  as the story below illustrates, but first let me share that when you love another person as Victor Hugo stated you see the face of God, that light that you see in that other person is God’s Glory and drawing that out in another to be ‘that light’ is so much of what I value in my life.

I have a dear brother, Adam Draper who has ghostly vision, he sees things I can’t yet and it’s not really uncommon for him to see angels and he told me this story which I hold near and dear to my heart.

He was at church and he shared the Holy Spirit was really present that Sunday when he looked up and saw a huge number of angels, (perhaps the great cloud of witnesses).  The way he described it was really cool, he said they were like a bunch of minnows when you toss a piece of bread in the water and they would all gather tightly together and a great flash of light would appear, then they would scurry over to another place, the Flash, and then the would scurry all over to witness another flash. This went on for a time and he asked Jesus what was going on. ‘This blows me away’, Jesus told him that there are certain aspects of God that can only be seen in men and when that occurs the Angels come running to see it.

Perhaps a reference to 1 Peter 1:12 ” It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.”

You may find Adam’s story very strange but I say it reinforces a Biblical truth: John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…..

Lessons From Gas Thirst 2016

What can we learn from this weeks gas scare in the Southeast

  1. Mass Shortages Occur When the public panics over the possibility of running out of something they deem a necessity.
  2. The Fuel Delivery System in the U.S. is quite fragile and monstrous in volume dispensed.
  3. Gasoline has to continue to flow for our systems to work, (current gasoline only has approx 3 month shelf life)
  4. Understanding the properties of modern gasoline mixtures can save you big problems
  5. The reflection of things Spiritual here is really cool, (just sayin)

On today’s Christian Car Guy Show September 24, 2016 I will go into detail on these points… but for this article let me say for anyone storing modern gasoline especially  the E10 you find at most pumps…DON”T!! it only lasts about 3 months and can cause you all kinds of problems down the road.

Tremendous amounts of Gasoline are consumed every second add to that so much leaks out and evaporates. Yet like the manna in the desert for the Israelite’s you can’t store it really so there has to remain a constant flow of phenomenal volume. (Something like 100x(10 to the 6th power) gallons of fuel flows in the Colonial pipeline every day. A leak of 336,000 gallons is a fraction of the daily output that was not the problem with supply it was that pipeline 1 was shut down for 12 days some 80 million gallons of gas didn’t get down the line.)

Hard to get your mind around all that. The good news is God supplies all that, not just for your car. Oil in the Bible has to do with anointing and lighting. Think about the oil in the Menorah and Christ, the word itself means the anointed one. The story of the 10 Virgins in Matthew 25 clearly describes a supply problem, had those other girls panicked like all the folks in North Carolina last week the Bride Groom would have had a much better reception with so much more light…

John 1:4 “In Him was the Life and that Life was the Light of men.” That’s our Jesus and endless supply if we just stay thirsty enough, check your gas gauge if you are getting low….PLEASE go spend some time getting your FILL…

Stay Thirsty my friends..

My Faith Votes

Because Faith Matters, MyFaithVotes exists to inspire and motivate Jesus followers to vote

We will rise up as a relevant and non-partisan movement of the church in America that will motivate believers to act on their faith by casting an informed vote based on a biblical worldview.

We believe Christians in the U.S. can and should make their voice heard for the stability of our country and security of our freedoms, and those of our children and grandchildren.

We believe that the best way to make a difference is to ensure we dramatically enhance voter participation amongst Christians.  If we don’t speak up, we can’t expect to be heard.

We believe that we will find commonality through the core values of our Judeo-Christian faith.

Please Pray Escaping Domestic Violence Unemployed and Bad CV Joint

Applicant #588 Left an abusive relationship during my pregnancy for our safety and had to start over. Finally just got another vehicle in June and the emergency brake went in July and the car makes a loud noise when turning right and when slowing down. I left my job at an insurance company of 6yrs during pregnancy because he works there and was using proximity at work to further abuse and intimidate me and has continued to stalk so I have been unemployed and have domestic violence work waiver from the state but do not have enough to pay this added expense right now.

Negotiations Bible Style 2016 (What About TrueCar?)

Negotiations Bible Style 2015 (What About TrueCar)

Jesus taught the most profoundly simple wisdom ever taught on the art of negotiation, so simple that few can see it, but so profound that it’s use will change your life and the world. In a three-letter very simple word “ASK”. “Ask and it shall be given to you.” Matthew 7:7a . Because people are afraid to ask Marketing Companies like TrueCar exsist. In TrueCar’s Dealer Agreement Jan 2013 look carefully near the bottom and you will see that dealers are to pay TrueCar $299 for a new car sale and $399 for a used car sale. Anyone can see that this additional cost will be passed along to the timid consumer who was afraid to ‘ASK’ for a lower price. I can’t help but wonder that such a thing could exist, but it does because people do not see the power of a good ‘ASK’.

A good ‘ASK’ based on more of Jesus teaching would incorporate a win-win. Both parties can and should benefit from the negotiation process. How cool is it, the good manners Jesus employs with all of Matthew 7: 7. He said ” Ask, Seek and Knock”, not Demand, Obsess, and Barge In. Watch the wisdom in this film clip. Lisa in this clip from the Movie “How Do You Know”, is afraid to ask her counselor anything.

“Figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it.” So much of life is right here it is mind blowing. Just to take buying a car for a moment, the biggest part of buying a car is figuring out what you want and can afford and this is where more huge mistakes are made than anywhere else. You can get a drop dead fantastic deal on a new car cheaper than anyone ever got it in 20 states, but if it’s not what you want or need and you have to change in the next few months it will cost you thousands of dollars. So #1 is getting a car you can enjoy for a long time, #2 making it affordable. Oh how it used to hurt me to see folks come back in a few months because they got a deal on a car they hated.

Figure out what kind of car you want, color accessories, styling, SUV, sedan. My wife likes to sit up high and she has to have a remote with power door locks, these are key things to understand about what you want.

Now you need a salesperson who will listen to what kind of car you want, not sell you something just because he has it in stock. If he won’t listen to the kind of car you want he’s not your guy or girl to sell you a car in my opinion. A good salesperson helps you most of all with the process of discovering what you want. My dad used to always make sure he had his prospects drive at least three different model cars to make sure they were getting to that basic of what do You want. It is way, way, way more important than saving a couple hundred bucks, because you should enjoy this car for years to come.

The pricing is actually much, much easier and very clear cut compared to say financing. The financing is another place that can cost you thousands if you are not careful. Here again you should figure out what you want and ‘ASK’ for it. Not demand, but patiently and humbly ask and keep asking, and here’s the hard part, without compromising beyond either parties benefit.

So where is that, the place where the dealer makes enough and the customer is getting a “good deal”. I believe its in that place where you find a salesperson who you can tell really wants to help you and you work with them asking and asking and seeing how they react and sharing your real budget concerns and knowing really what you should spend and sharing that with them. Sorry, I don’t believe there is a marketing solution like TrueCar or CarMax, I believe its more personal and abiding in Christ to where the fear is gone and we are able to take off the mask and share what we really want and need. You don’t have because you don’t ask , there is a much deeper issue than cars here, Jesus was talking about asking your Heavenly Father the way to an abundant life. Figure out what you want and learn how to ask God for it, WOW!!!
